Fibonacci Polyominoes: Refined Enumeration and Dyck-Path Bijections

We study Fibonacci polyominoes, a class of column-convex polyominoes whose lower boundary is a staircase path made of unit horizontal and vertical steps. We derive generating functions that enumerate these polyominoes by area and semiperimeter. The resulting formulas give refinements of the classical Fibonacci enumeration and lead to explicit expressions involving Catalan numbers. We give a bijection with labeled Dyck paths that provides combinatorial proofs of these formulas and translates natural statistics on Fibonacci polyominoes into peaks, returns, and related statistics on Dyck paths. This yields refinements by descents and left-to-right minima, including distributions governed by Narayana numbers. We also study consecutive columns of equal height, leading in the diagonal case to a refinement of the Catalan enumeration governed by Motzkin numbers.

Diagonals in Riordan matrices and applications

We introduce a method for describing Riordan matrices via recurrence relations along their diagonals. This provides a new structural description that complements the classical row-wise and column-wise constructions via the A-sequence. As an application, we characterize families of palindromic Riordan polynomials, yielding a new combinatorial interpretation in terms of lattice paths.

Restricted Fubini Rankings and Restricted Unit Interval Parking Functions

We study three natural types of restrictions on Fubini rankings and unit interval parking functions, which are motivated by their correspondence with ordered set partitions. For each restriction type, we define the corresponding subset of Fubini rankings and unit interval parking functions, establish enumerative results, and provide bijections between the restricted families. We also obtain exponential generating functions and combinatorial interpretations, including connections with exceedances in permutations and with the absence of cyclical adjacencies in set partitions.

Lucky Cars in Fubini Rankings and Unit Fubini Rankings

We study lucky cars in subsets of parking functions, called Fubini rankings and unit Fubini rankings. A Fubini ranking is a sequence of nonnegative integers that encodes a valid ranking of competitors, where ties are allowed. A car (or competitor) is said to be lucky if it is the first instance of that rank appearing in the sequence. We present combinatorial characterizations and enumeration formulas for lucky cars in both Fubini rankings and unit Fubini rankings, and establish connections between these objects and ordered set partitions, as well as integer compositions. To obtain our results, we use several techniques to enumerate statistics over these families of objects. In particular, we employ generating functions, bijective and combinatorial arguments, recurrence relations, and Zeilberger's creative telescoping method.

Inversions in Colored Permutations, Derangements, and Involutions

Arslan, Altoum, and Zaarour introduced an inversion statistic for generalized symmetric groups. In this work, we study the distribution of this statistic over colored permutations, including derangements and involutions. By establishing a bijective correspondence between colored permutations and colored Lehmer codes, we develop a unified framework for enumerating colored Mahonian numbers and analyzing their combinatorial properties. We derive explicit formulas, recurrence relations, and generating functions for the number of inversions in these families, extending classical results to the colored setting. We conclude with explicit expressions for inversions in colored derangements and involutions.

Enumeration of Colored Tilings on Graphs via Generating Functions

In this paper, we study the problem of partitioning a graph into connected and colored components called blocks. Using bivariate generating functions and combinatorial techniques, we determine the expected number of blocks when the vertices of a graph $G$, for $G$ in certain families of graphs, are colored uniformly and independently. Special emphasis is placed on graphs of the form $G \times P_n$, where $P_n$ is the path graph on $n$ vertices. This case serves as a generalization of the problem of enumerating the number of tilings of an $m \times n$ grid using colored polyominoes.

Generating Trees and Fibonacci Polyominoes

We study a new class of polyominoes, called $p$-Fibonacci polyominoes, defined using $p$-Fibonacci words. We enumerate these polyominoes by applying generating functions to capture geometric parameters such as area, semi-perimeter, and the number of inner points. Additionally, we establish bijections between Fibonacci polyominoes, binary Fibonacci words, and integer compositions with certain restrictions.

Grand zigzag knight's paths

We study the enumeration of different classes of grand knight's paths in the plane. In particular, we focus on the subsets of zigzag knight's paths that are subject to constraints. These constraints include ending at $y$-coordinate 0, bounded by a horizontal line, confined within a tube, among other considerations. We present our results using generating functions or direct closed-form expressions. We derive asymptotic results, finding approximations for quantities such as the probability that a zigzag knight's path stays in some area of the plane, or for the average of the altitude of such a path. Additionally, we exhibit some bijections between grand zigzag knight's paths and some pairs of compositions.

Some distributions in increasing and flattened permutations

We examine the distribution and popularity of different parameters (such as the number of descents, runs, valleys, peaks, right-to-left minima, and more) on the sets of increasing and flattened permutations. For each parameter, we provide an exponential generating function for its corresponding distribution and popularity.Additionally, we present one-to-one correspondences between these permutations and some classes of simpler combinatorial objects.

Fibonacci--Theodorus Spiral and its properties

Inspired by the ancient spiral constructed by the greek philosopher Theodorus which is based on concatenated right triangles, we have created a spiral. In this spiral, called \emph{Fibonacci--Theodorus}, the sides of the triangles have lengths corresponding to Fibonacci numbers. Towards the end of the paper, we present a generalized method applicable to second-order recurrence relations. Our exploration of the Fibonacci--Theodorus spiral aims to address a variety of questions, showcasing its unique properties and behaviors. For example, we study topics such as area, perimeter, and angles. Notably, we establish a relationship between the ratio of two consecutive areas and the golden ratio, a pattern that extends to angles sharing a common vertex. Furthermore, we present some asymptotic results. For instance, we demonstrate that the sum of the first $n$ areas comprising the spiral approaches a multiple of the sum of the initial $n$ Fibonacci numbers. Moreover, we provide a sequence of open problems related to all spiral worked in this paper. Finally, in his work Hahn, Hahn observed a potential connection between the golden ratio and the ratio of areas between spines of lengths $\sqrt{F_{n+1}}$ and $\sqrt{F_{n+2}-1}$ and the areas between spines of lengths $\sqrt{F_{n}}$ and $\sqrt{F_{n+1}-1}$ in the Theodorus spiral. However, no formal proof has been provided in his work. In this paper, we provide a proof for Hahn's conjecture.

Differential equations in Ward's calculus

In this paper we solve some differential equations in the $D_h$ derivative in Ward's sense. We use a special metric in the formal power series ring $\K[[x]]$. The solutions of that equations are giving in terms of fixed points for certain contractive maps in our metric framework. Our main tools are Banach's Fixed Point Theorem, Fundamental Calculus Theorem and Barrow's rule for Ward's calculus. Later, we return to the usual differential calculus via Sheffer's expansion of some kind of operators. Finally, we give some examples related, in some sense, to combinatorics.

Pattern Avoidance in Weak Ascent Sequences

In this paper, we study pattern avoidance in weak ascent sequences, giving some results for patterns of length 3. This is an analogous study to one given by Duncan and Steingrímsson (2011) for ascent sequences. More precisely, we provide systematically the generating functions for the number of weak ascent sequences avoiding the patterns $001, 011, 012, 021$, and $102$. Additionally, we establish bijective connections between pattern-avoiding weak ascent sequences and other combinatorial objects, such as compositions, upper triangular 01-matrices, and plane trees.

Counting Colored Tilings on Grids and Graphs

In this paper, we explore some generalizations of a counting problem related to tilings in grids of size 2xn, which was originally posed as a question on Mathematics Stack Exchange (Question 3972905). In particular, we consider this problem for the product of two graphs G and P(n), where P(n) is the path graph of n vertices. We give explicit bivariate generating functions for some specific cases.

The Combinatorics of Motzkin Polyominoes

A word $w=w_1\cdots w_n$ over the set of positive integers is a Motzkin word whenever $w_1=\texttt{1}$, $1\leq w_k\leq w_{k-1}+1$, and $w_{k-1}\neq w_{k}$ for $k=2, \dots, n$. It can be associated to a $n$-column Motzkin polyomino whose $i$-th column contains $w_i$ cells, and all columns are bottom-justified. We reveal bijective connections between Motzkin paths, restricted Catalan words, primitive Łukasiewicz paths, and Motzkin polyominoes. Using the aforementioned bijections together with classical one-to-one correspondence with Dyck paths avoiding $UDU$s, we provide generating functions with respect to the length, area, semiperimeter, value of the last symbol, and number of interior points of Motzkin polyominoes. We give asymptotics and closed-form expressions for the total area, total semiperimeter, sum of the last symbol values, and total number of interior points over all Motzkin polyominoes of a given length. We also present and prove an engaging trinomial relation concerning the number of cells lying at different levels and first terms of the expanded $(1+x+x^2)^n$.

Flattened Catalan Words

In this work, we define flattened Catalan words as Catalan words whose runs of weak ascents have leading terms that appear in weakly increasing order. We provide generating functions, formulas, and asymptotic expressions for the number of flattened Catalan words based on the number of runs of ascents (descents), runs of weak ascents (descents), $\ell$-valleys, valleys, symmetric valleys, $\ell$-peaks, peaks, and symmetric peaks.

Enumerating runs, valleys, and peaks in Catalan words

We provide generating functions, formulas, and asymptotic expressions for the number of Catalan words based on the number of runs of ascents (descents), runs of weak ascents (descents), $\ell$-valleys, valleys, symmetric valleys, $\ell$-peaks, peaks, and symmetric peaks. We also establish some bijections with restricted Dyck paths and ordered trees that transports some statistics.

Arndt compositions: a generating functions approach

We use generating functions to enumerate Arndt compositions, that is, integer compositions where there is a descent between every second pair of parts, starting with the first and second part, and so on. In 2013, Jörg Arndt noted that this family of compositions is counted by the Fibonacci sequence. We provide an approach that is purely based on generating functions to prove this observation. We also enumerate these compositions with respect to the number of parts and the last part. From this approach, we can generalize some recent results given by Hopkins and Tangboonduangjit in 2023. Finally, we study some possible generalizations of this counting problem.

Some Connections Between Restricted Dyck Paths, Polyominoes, and Non-Crossing Partitions

A \emph{Dyck path} is a lattice path in the first quadrant of the $xy$-plane that starts at the origin, ends on the $x$-axis, and consists of the same number of North-East steps $U$ and South-East steps $D$. A \emph{valley} is a subpath of the form $DU$. A Dyck path is called \emph{restricted $d$-Dyck} if the difference between any two consecutive valleys is at least $d$ (right-hand side minus left-hand side) or if it has at most one valley. In this paper we give some connections between restricted $d$-Dyck paths and both, the non-crossing partitions of $[n]$ and some subfamilies of polyominoes. We also give generating functions to count several aspects of these combinatorial objects.
