Powers and trace of symmetric powers of $2\times 2$ matrices and combinatorial, Fibonacci and Lucas identities

Let $A$ be an arbitrary $2\times 2$ matrix. In \cite{Cisneros:PhD,Cisneros:I2x2M} I gave a formula for the trace of the $k$-th symmetric power of $A$ in terms of the anti-diagonal entries of $A^{k+1}$ and $A$. This was based on formulae that I found for the entries of the $k$-th power $A^k$ of the matrix $A$ in terms of its entries but I only sketched the idea of how I obtained such formulae. In this article I give the full proof of those formulae by counting some walks of length $k$ over the complete digraph of order $2$. I compare them with formulae for $A^k$ given by Mc Laughlin in \cite{McLaughlin:CIDnP2x2M} and by Williams in \cite{Williams:nthP2x2M}. This leads to combinatorial identities, in particular expressions for Fibonacci and Lucas numbers.

McKay quivers of small finite subgroups of $GL(2,\mathbb{C})$

We explicitly compute the McKay quivers of small finite subgroups of $GL(2,\mathbb{C})$ relative to the natural representation, using character theory and the McKay quivers of finite subgroups of $SU(2)$. We present examples that shows the rich symmetry and combinatorial structure of these quivers. We compare our results with the MacKay quivers computed by Auslander and Reiten.

Classification of indecomposable reflexive modules on quotient singularities through Atiyah--Patodi--Singer theory

In [20] Esnault asked whether on a general quotient surface singularity the rank and the first Chern class distinguish isomorphism classes of indecomposable reflexive modules. Wunram gave a contraexample in [46] showing two different full shaves on a quotient singularity, with the same rank and the same first Chern class. In this article, we prove that irreducible reflexive modules over quotient surface singularities are determined by the rank, first Chern class and the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer $\tildeξ$-invariant [5], except for the case of rank $2$ indecomposable reflexive modules over dihedral quotient surface singularities $\mathbb{D}_{n,q}$ with $\gcd(m,2)=2$, which we conjecture to follow the same pattern. To prove the classification theorem, first we prove that every spherical $3$-manifold with non-trivial fundamental group appears as the link of a quotient surface singularity, and that indecomposable flat vector bundles over spherical $3$-manifolds are classified by their rank, first and second Cheeger-Chern-Simons classes, with the exception of the aforementioned case.

Indexes of vector fields for mixed functions

A mixed function is a real analytic map $f\colon \mathbb{C}^n \to \mathbb{C}$ in the complex variables $z_1,\dots,z_n$ and their conjugates $\bar{z}_1,\dots,\bar{z}_n$. In this article we define an integer valued index for vector fields $v$ with isolated singularity at $\mathbf{0}$ on real analytic varieties $V_f:=f^{-1}(0)$ defined by mixed functions $f$ with isolated critical point at $\mathbf{0}$. We call this index the mixed GSV-index and it generalizes the classical GSV-index defined by Gomez-Mont, Seade and Verjovsky, i.e., if the function $f$ is holomorphic, then the mixed GSV-index coincides with the GSV-index. Furthermore, the mixed GSV-index is a lifting to $\mathbb{Z}$ of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-valued real GSV-index defined by Aguilar, Seade and Verjovsky. As applications we prove that the mixed GSV-index is equal to the Poincaré-Hopf index of $v$ on a Milnor fiber. If $f$ also satisfies the strong Milnor condition, i.e., for every $ε>0$ (small enough) the map $\frac{f}{\|f\|}\colon \mathbb{S}_ε\setminus L_f \to \mathbb{S}^1$ is a fiber bundle, we prove that the mixed GSV-index is equal to the curvatura integra of $f$ defined by Cisneros-Molina, Grulha and Seade based on the curvatura integra defined by Kervaire.

Cheeger-Chern-Simons classes of representations of finite subgroups of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ and the spectrum of rational double point singularities

Let $L$ be a compact oriented $3$-manifold and $ρ\colonπ_1(L)\to \mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{C})$ a representation. Evaluating the Cheeger-Chern-Simons class $\widehat{c}_{ρ,k}\in H^{2k-1}(L;\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Z})$ of $ρ$ at $ν\in H_{2k-1}(L;\mathbb{Z})$ we get characteristic numbers that we call the $k$-th CCS-numbers of $ρ$. We prove that if $ρ$ is a topologically trivial representation, the 2-nd CCS-number $\widehat{c}_{ρ,2}([L])$ of the fundamental class $[L]$ of $L$ is given by the invariant $\tildeξ_ρ(D)$ of the Dirac operator $D$ of $L$ twisted by $ρ$ defined by Atiyah, Patodi and Singer. If $L$ is a rational homology sphere, we also give a formula for $\widehat{c}_{ρ,2}([L])$ of any representation $ρ$ in terms of $\tildeξ(D)$. Given a topologically trivial representation $ρ\colonπ_1(L)\to\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{C})$ we construct an element $\langle L,ρ\rangle$ in the $3$-rd algebraic K-theory group $K_3(\mathbb{C})$ of the complex numbers. For a finite subgroup $Γ$ of $\mathrm{SU(2)}$ and its irreducible representations, we compute the 1-st and 2-nd CCS-numbers. With this, we recover the spectrum of all rational double point singularities. Motivated by this result, we define the topological spectrum of rational surface singularities and Gorenstein singularities. Given a normal surface singularity $(X,x)$ with link a rational homology sphere $L$, we show how to compute the invariant $\tildeξ_ρ(D)$ for the Dirac operator of $L$ using either a resolution or a smoothing of $(X,x)$.

Equivalence of Milnor and Milnor-Lê fibrations for real analytic maps

In [22] Milnor proved that a real analytic map $f\colon (R^n,0) \to (R^p,0)$, where $n \geq p$, with an isolated critical point at the origin has a fibration on the tube $f|\colon B_ε^n \cap f^{-1}(S_δ^{p-1}) \to S_δ^{p-1}$. Constructing a vector field such that, (1) it is transverse to the spheres, and (2) it is transverse to the tubes, he "inflates" the tube to the sphere, to get a fibration $φ\colon S_ε^{n-1} \setminus f^{-1}(0) \to S^{p-1}$, but the projection is not necessarily given by $f/ \|f\|$ as in the complex case. In the case $f$ has isolated critical value, in [9] it was proved that if the fibres inside a small tube are transverse to the sphere $S_ε$, then it has a fibration on the tube. Also in [9], the concept of $d$-regularity was defined, it turns out that $f$ is $d$-regular if and only if the map $f/|f\|\colon S_ε^{n-1} \setminus f^{-1}(0) \to S^{p-1}$ is a fibre bundle equivalent to the one on the tube. In this article, we prove the corresponding facts in a more general setting: if a locally surjective map $f$ has a linear discriminant $Δ$ and a fibration on the tube $f|\colon B_ε^n \cap f^{-1}(S_δ^{p-1} \setminus Δ) \to S_δ^{p-1} \setminus Δ$, then $f$ is $d$-regular if and only if the map $f/ \|f\|\colon S_ε^{n-1} \setminus f^{-1}(Δ) \to S^{p-1} \setminus \mathcal{A}$ (with $\mathcal{A}$ the radial projection of $Δ$ on $S^{p-1}$) is a fibre bundle equivalent to the one on the tube. We do this by constructing a vector field $\tilde{w}$ which inflates the tube to the sphere in a controlled way, it satisfies properties analogous to the vector field constructed by Milnor in the complex setting: besides satisfying (1) and (2) above, it also satisfies that $f/ \|f\|$ is constant on the integral curves of $\tilde{w}$.

Relative group (co)homology theories with coefficients and the comparison homomorphism

Let $G$ be a group, let $H$ be a subgroup of $G$ and let $\Or(G)$ be the orbit category. In this paper we extend the definition of the relative group (co)homology theories of the pair $(G,H)$ defined by Adamson and Takasu to have coefficients in an $\Or(G)$-module. There is a canonical comparison homomorphism defined by Cisneros-Molina and Arciniega-Nevárez from Takasu's theory to Adamson's one. We give a necessary and sufficient condition on the subgroup $H$ for which the comparison homomorphism is an isomorphism for all coefficients. We also use the Lück-Wiermann construction to introduce a long exact sequence for Adamson (co)homology. Finally, we provide some examples of explicit computations for the comparison homomorphism.

Multiple points of a simplicial map and image-computing spectral sequences

The Image-Computing Spectral Sequence computes the homology of the image of a finite map from the alternating homology of the multiple point spaces of the map. A related spectral sequence was obtained by Gabrielov, Vorobjob and Zell which computes the homology of the image of a closed map from the homology of $k$-fold fibred products of the map. We give new proofs of these results, in case the map can be triangulated. Thanks to work of Hardt, this holds for a very wide range of maps, and in particular for most of the finite maps of interest in singularity theory. The proof seems conceptually simpler and more canonical than earlier proofs.

Invariants of hyperbolic 3-manifolds in relative group homology

Let $M$ be a complete oriented hyperbolic $3$--manifold of finite volume. Using classifying spaces for families of subgroups we construct a class $β_P(M)$ in the Adamson relative homology group $H_3([PSL_2(\mathbb{C}):\bar{P}];\mathbb{Z})$, where $\bar{P}$ is the subgroup of parabolic transformations which fix $\infty$ in the Riemann sphere. We also prove that the classes $F(M)$ in the Takasu relative homology groups $H_3(PSL_2(\mathbb{C}),\bar{P};\mathbb{Z})$ constructed by Zickert, which are not well-defined and depend of a choice of decorations by horospheres, are all mapped to $β_P(M)$ via a canonical comparison homomorphism $H_3(PSL_2(\mathbb{C}),\bar{P};\mathbb{Z})\to H_3([PSL_2(\mathbb{C}):\bar{P}];\mathbb{Z})$. To do this, we simplify the construction of the classes $F(M)$ using a simpler complex which computes $H_3(PSL_2(\mathbb{C}),\bar{P};\mathbb{Z})$, getting a simple simplicial formula for $F(M)$, which in turn gives a simpler and more efficient formula to compute the volume and Chern--Simons invariant than the one given by Zickert. The constructions can be extended for any boundary-parabolic $PSL_2(\mathbb{C})$-representation.
