Electron stability constrains neutrino time delays

Superluminal neutrino propagation, induced by Lorentz-invariance violation (LIV), is strongly constrained by vacuum pair emission, $ν\to ν+ e^- + e^+$, a process ordinarily forbidden, which rapidly degrades the energy of high-energy neutrinos. Consequently, observable neutrino time delays are often preferentially associated with subluminal propagation, prompting LIV interpretations of claimed time delays between high-energy cosmic neutrinos and gamma rays. However, this expectation is at odds with the observed stability of high-energy electrons. The same Lorentz-violating correction associated with subluminal neutrino propagation opens the overlooked complementary decay channel $e^- \to e^- + ν+ \barν$, leading to electron instability. We derive constraints on LIV from recent observations of TeV--PeV astrophysical electrons. These electron stability limits rule out LIV invoked to explain delays of high-energy cosmic neutrinos. Consequently, neutrino time delays are constrained on both the superluminal and subluminal sides. Therefore, observable delays require either purely astrophysical origins, a realization of LIV that affects all particle species equally, or physics beyond the standard effective-field-theory framework.

Particle-antiparticle asymmetry in a relativistic deformed kinematics

Relativistic deformed kinematics are usually considered as a way to capture residual effects of a fundamental quantum gravity theory. These kinematics present a non-commutative addition law for the momenta, so that the total momentum of a multi-particle system depends on the specific ordering in which the momenta are composed. We explore in the present work how this property may be used to generate an asymmetry between particles and antiparticles through a particular ordering prescription, resulting in a violation of CPT symmetry. We study its consequences for muon decay, obtaining a difference in the lifetimes of the particle and the antiparticle as a function the new high-energy scale parameterizing such a relativistic deformed kinematics.

Curved momentum space, locality, and generalized space-time

We establish the correspondence between two apparently unrelated but in fact complementary approaches of a relativistic deformed kinematics: the geometric properties of momentum space and the loss of absolute locality in canonical spacetime, which can be restored with the introduction of a generalized spacetime. This correspondence is made explicit for the case of $κ$-Poincaré kinematics and compared with its properties in the Hopf algebra framework.

Probing the quantum-gravity realm with slow atoms

For the study of Planck-scale modifications of the energy-momentum dispersion relation, which had been previously focused on the implications for ultrarelativistic (ultrafast) particles, we consider the possible role of experiments involving nonrelativistic particles, and particularly atoms. We extend a recent result establishing that measurements of "atom-recoil frequency" can provide insight that is valuable for some theoretical models. And from a broader perspective we analyze the complementarity of the nonrelativistic and the ultrarelativistic regimes in this research area.

Matter-antimatter asymmetry without departure from thermal equilibrium

We explore the possibility of baryogenesis without departure from thermal equilibrium. A possible scenario is found, though it contains strong constraints on the size of the $CPT$ violation ($CPTV$) effects and on the role of the $B$ (baryon number) nonconserving interactions which are needed for it.

Light-cone quantization of two dimensional field theory in the path integral approach

A quantization condition due to the boundary conditions and the compatification of the light cone space-time coordinate $x^-$ is identified at the level of the classical equations for the right-handed fermionic field in two dimensions. A detailed analysis of the implications of the implementation of this quantization condition at the quantum level is presented. In the case of the Thirring model one has selection rules on the excitations as a function of the coupling and in the case of the Schwinger model a double integer structure of the vacuum is derived in the light-cone frame. Two different quantized chiral Schwinger models are found, one of them without a $θ$-vacuum structure. A generalization of the quantization condition to theories with several fermionic fields and to higher dimensions is presented.

Correlation between UV and IR cutoffs in quantum field theory and large extra dimensions

A recently conjectured relashionship between UV and IR cutoffs in an effective field theory without quantum gravity is generalized in the presence of large extra dimensions. Estimates for the corrections to the usual calculation of observables within quantum field theory are used to put very stringent limits, in some cases, on the characteristic scale of the additional compactified dimensions. Implications for the cosmological constant problem are also discussed.

A Nambu-Jona-Lasinio like model from QCD at low energies

A generalization to any dimension of the fermion field transformation which allows to derive the solution of the massless Schwinger model in the path integral framework is identified. New arguments based on this transformation for a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) like model as the low energy limit of a gauge theory in dimension greater than two are presented. Our result supports the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking picture conjectured by Nambu many years ago and the link between QCD, NJL and chiral models.

Effective Field Theory of Gravity, Reduction of Couplings and the Renormalization Group

The structure of the renormalization group equations for the low energy effective theory of gravity coupled to a scalar field is presented. An approximate solution to these equations with a finite number of independent renormalized parameters can be found when the mass scale characteristic of the fluctuations in the geometry is much smaller than the Planck mass. The cosmological constant problem is reformulated in this context and some conditions on the matter field content and interactions required in order to have a sufficiently small cosmological constant are identified.

Extended Dualization: a method for the Bosonization of Anomalous Fermion Systems in Arbitrary Dimension

The technique of extended dualization developed in this paper is used to bosonize quantized fermion systems in arbitrary dimension $D$ in the low energy regime. In its original (minimal) form, dualization is restricted to models wherein it is possible to define a dynamical quantized conserved charge. We generalize the usual dualization prescription to include systems with dynamical non--conserved quantum currents. Bosonization based on this extended dualization requires the introduction of an additional rank $0$ (scalar) field together with the usual antisymmetric tensor field of rank $(D-2)$. Our generalized dualization prescription permits one to clearly distinguish the arbitrariness in the bosonization from the arbitrariness in the quantization of the system. We study the bosonization of four--fermion interactions with large mass in arbitrary dimension. First, we observe that dualization permits one to formally bosonize these models by invoking the bosonization of the free massive Dirac fermion and adding some extra model--dependent bosonic terms. Secondly, we explore the potential of extended dualization by considering the particular case of \underbar{chiral} four--fermion interactions. Here minimal dualization is inadequate for calculating the extra bosonic terms. We demonstrate the utility of extended dualization by successfully completing the bosonization of this chiral model. Finally, we consider two examples in two dimensions which illuminate the utility of using extended dualization by showing how quantization ambiguities in a fermionic theory propagate into the bosonized version. An explicit parametrization of the quantization ambiguities of the chiral current in the Chiral Schwinger model is obtained. Similarly, for the sine--Gordon interaction in the massive Thirring model the quantization
