Fibonacci and Catalan Numbers Meet in Staircase Polyominoes

We study Fibonacci (staircase) polyominoes, a class of column-convex polyominoes whose lower boundary is a staircase with unit vertical steps. We derive multivariate generating functions that refine Turban's Fibonacci-number enumeration by tracking additional perimeter and area parameters. The proofs use a catalytic functional equation and, in a perimeter specialization, the kernel method, leading to explicit closed forms and Catalan-number coefficient formulas.

Black Cell Capacity in Catalan polyominoes

A Catalan word is a sequence $w_1w_2\cdots w_n$ of nonnegative integers such that $w_1=0$ and $w_{i}\leq w_{i-1}+1$ for $2\leq i\leq n$. Given a Catalan word, we construct a column-convex polyomino (or \emph{bargraph}) by placing, at position $i$, a column of height $w_i + 1$, with all columns aligned along their bottom edges. On these Catalan polyominoes we define the black cell capacity by coloring the cells in a chessboard pattern and we count the number of black cells in the polyomino. We study the distribution of the black cell capacity over Catalan polyominoes and derive generating functions that encode this statistic.

Descent distribution on Catalan words avoiding ordered pairs of Relations

This work is a continuation of some recent articles presenting enumerative results for Catalan words avoiding one or a pair of consecutive or classical patterns of length $3$. More precisely, we provide systematically the bivariate generating function for the number of Catalan words avoiding a given pair of relations with respect to the length and the number of descents. We also present several constructive bijections preserving the number of descents. As a byproduct, we deduce the generating function for the total number of descents on all Catalan words of a given length and avoiding a pair of ordered relations.

Partial Motzkin paths with air pockets of the first kind avoiding peaks, valleys or double rises

Motzkin paths with air pockets (MAP) of the first kind are defined as a generalization of Dyck paths with air pockets. They are lattice paths in $\mathbb{N}^2$ starting at the origin made of steps $U=(1,1)$, $D_k=(1,-k)$, $k\geq 1$ and $H=(1,0)$, where two down-steps cannot be consecutive. We enumerate MAP and their prefixes avoiding peaks (resp. valleys, resp. double rise) according to the length, the type of the last step, and the height of its end-point. We express our results using Riordan arrays. Finally, we provide constructive bijections between these paths and restricted Dyck and Motzkin paths.

Polyominoes and graphs built from Fibonacci words

We introduce the $k$-bonacci polyominoes, a new family of polyominoes associated with the binary words avoiding $k$ consecutive $1$'s, also called generalized $k$-bonacci words. The polyominoes are very entrancing objects, considered in combinatorics and computer science. The study of polyominoes generates a rich source of combinatorial ideas. In this paper we study some properties of $k$-bonacci polyominoes. Specifically, we determine their recursive structure and, using this structure, we enumerate them according to their area, semiperimeter, and length of the corresponding words. We also introduce the $k$-bonacci graphs, then we obtain the generating functions for the total number of vertices and edges, the distribution of the degrees, and the total number of $k$-bonacci graphs that have a Hamiltonian cycle.

Poly-Cauchy numbers -- the combinatorics behind

We introduce poly-Cauchy permutations that are enumerated by the poly-Cauchy numbers. We provide combinatorial proofs for several identities involving poly-Cauchy numbers and some of their generalizations. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the power and beauty of the elementary combinatorial approach.
