A Note on trapped Surfaces in the Vaidya Solution

The Vaidya solution describes the gravitational collapse of a finite shell of incoherent radiation falling into flat spacetime and giving rise to a Schwarzschild black hole. There has been a question whether closed trapped surfaces can extend into the flat region (whereas closed outer trapped surfaces certainly can). For the special case of self-similar collapse we show that the answer is yes, if and only if the mass function rises fast enough.

A New Type of Singularity Theorem

A new type of singularity theorem, based on spatial averages of physical quantities, is presented and discussed. Alternatively, the results inform us of when a spacetime can be singularity-free. This theorem provides a decisive observational difference between singular and non-singular, globally hyperbolic, open cosmological models.

Accelerating expansion and change of signature

We show that some types of sudden singularities admit a natural explanation in terms of regular changes of signature on brane-worlds in AdS$_{5}$. The present accelerated expansion of the Universe and its possible ending at a sudden singularity may therefore simply be an indication that our braneworld is about to change its Lorentzian signature to an Euclidean one, while remaining fully regular. An explicit example of this behaviour satisfying the weak and strong energy conditions is presented.

Is the accelerated expansion evidence of a forthcoming change of signature on the brane?

We show that regular changes of signature on brane-worlds in AdS bulks may account for some types of the recently fashionable sudden singularities. Therefore, the possibility that the Universe seems to approach a future sudden singularity at an accelerated rate of expansion might simply be an indication that our braneworld is about to change from Lorentzian to Euclidean signature. Both the brane and the bulk remain fully regular everywhere. We present a model in which the weak and strong energy conditions hold on the brane, in contrast with the standard cosmologies leading to the analogous kinematical behaviour (that is, with a diverging Hubble factor).

A note on the uniqueness of global static decompositions

We discuss when static Killing vector fields are standard, that is, leading to a global orthogonal splitting of the spacetime. We prove that such an orthogonal splitting is unique whenever the natural space is compact. This is carried out by proving that many notable spacelike submanifolds must be contained in an orthogonal slice. Possible obstructions to the global splitting are also considered.

Lorentzian and signature changing branes

General hypersurface layers are considered in order to describe brane-worlds and shell cosmologies. No restriction is placed on the causal character of the hypersurface which may thus have internal changes of signature. Strengthening the results in our previous letter [1], we confirm that a good, regular and consistent description of signature change is achieved in these brane/shells scenarios, while keeping the hypersurface and the bulk completely regular. Our formalism allows for a unified description of the traditional timelike branes/shells together with the signature-changing, or pure null, ones. This allows for a detailed comparison of the results in both situations. An application to the case of hypersurface layers in static bulks is presented, leading to the general Robertson-Walker geometry on the layer --with a possible signature change. Explicit examples on anti de Sitter bulks are then studied. The permitted behaviours in different settings ($Z_{2}$-mirror branes, asymmetric shells, signature-changing branes) are analysed in detail. We show in particular that (i) in asymmetric shells there is an upper bound for the energy density, and (ii) that the energy density within the brane vanishes when approaching a change of signature. The description of a signature change as a `singularity' seen from within the brane is considered. We also find new relations between the fundamental constants in the brane/shell, its tension, and the cosmological and gravitational constants of the bulk, independently of the existence or not of a change of signature.

A singularity theorem based on spatial averages

Inspired by Raychaudhuri's work, and using the equation named after him as a basic ingredient, a new singularity theorem is proved. Open non-rotating everywhere expanding universes with non-vanishing spatial average of the matter variables are severely geodesically incomplete to the past. Another way of stating the result is that, under the same conditions, any singularity-free model must have a vanishing spatial average of the energy density (and other physical variables). This is very satisfactory and provides a clear decisive difference between singular and non-singular cosmologies.

The universal 'energy' operator

The "positive square" of any tensor is presented in a universal and unified manner, valid in Lorentzian manifolds of arbitrary dimension, and independently of any (anti)-symmetry properties of the tensor. For rank-m tensors, the positive square has rank 2m. Positive here means future, that is to say, satisfying the dominant property. The standard energy-momentum and super-energy tensors are recovered as appropriate parts of the general square. A richer structure of principal null directions arises.

Symmetric hyperbolic systems for a large class of fields in arbitrary dimension

Symmetric hyperbolic systems of equations are explicitly constructed for a general class of tensor fields by considering their structure as r-fold forms. The hyperbolizations depend on 2r-1 arbitrary timelike vectors. The importance of the so-called "superenergy" tensors, which provide the necessary symmetric positive matrices, is emphasized and made explicit. Thereby, a unified treatment of many physical systems is achieved, as well as of the sometimes called "higher order" systems. The characteristics of these symmetric hyperbolic systems are always physical, and directly related to the null directions of the superenergy tensor, which are in particular principal null directions of the tensor field solutions. Generic energy estimates and inequalities are presented too.

Second-order symmetric Lorentzian manifolds

Lorentzian manifolds with vanishing second covariant derivative of the Riemann tensor are studied. Their existence, classification and explicit local expression are considered. Related issues and open questions are briefly commented.

A weighted de Rham operator acting on arbitrary tensor fields and their local potentials

We introduce a weighted de Rham operator which acts on arbitrary tensor fields by considering their structure as r-fold forms. We can thereby define associated superpotentials for all tensor fields in all dimensions and, from any of these superpotentials, we deduce in a straightforward and natural manner the existence of 2r potentials for any tensor field, where r is its form-structure number. By specialising this result to symmetric double forms, we are able to obtain a pair of potentials for the Riemann tensor, and a single (2,3)-form potential for the Weyl tensor due to its tracelessness. This latter potential is the n-dimensional version of the double dual of the classical four dimensional (2,1)-form Lanczos potential. We also introduce a new concept of harmonic tensor fields, demonstrate that the new weighted de Rham operator has many other desirable properties and, in particular, it is the natural operator to use in the Laplace-like equation for the Riemann tensor.

Causal structures and causal boundaries

We give an up-to-date perspective with a general overview of the theory of causal properties, the derived causal structures, their classification and applications, and the definition and construction of causal boundaries and of causal symmetries, mostly for Lorentzian manifolds but also in more abstract settings.

A local potential for the Weyl tensor in all dimensions

In all dimensions and arbitrary signature, we demonstrate the existence of a new local potential -- a double (2,3)-form -- for the Weyl curvature tensor, and more generally for all tensors with the symmetry properties of the Weyl curvature tensor. The classical four-dimensional Lanczos potential for a Weyl tensor -- a double (2,1)-form -- is proven to be a particular case of the new potential: its double dual.

Bi-conformal vector fields and their applications

We introduce the concept of bi-conformal transformation, as a generalization of conformal ones, by allowing two orthogonal parts of a manifold with metric $\G$ to be scaled by different conformal factors. In particular, we study their infinitesimal version, called bi-conformal vector fields. We show the differential conditions characterizing them in terms of a "square root" of the metric, or equivalently of two complementary orthogonal projectors. Keeping these fixed, the set of bi-conformal vector fields is a Lie algebra which can be finite or infinite dimensional according to the dimensionality of the projectors. We determine (i) when an infinite-dimensional case is feasible and its properties, and (ii) a normal system for the generators in the finite-dimensional case. Its integrability conditions are also analyzed, which in particular provides the maximum number of linearly independent solutions. We identify the corresponding maximal spaces, and show a necessary geometric condition for a metric tensor to be a double-twisted product. More general ``breakable'' spaces are briefly considered. Many known symmetries are included, such as conformal Killing vectors, Kerr-Schild vector fields, kinematic self-similarity, causal symmetries, and rigid motions.

General study and basic properties of causal symmetries

We fully develop the concept of causal symmetry introduced in Class. Quant. Grav. 20 (2003) L139. A causal symmetry is a transformation of a Lorentzian manifold (V,g) which maps every future-directed vector onto a future-directed vector. We prove that the set of all causal symmetries is not a group under the usual composition operation but a submonoid of the diffeomorphism group of V. Therefore, the infinitesimal generating vector fields of causal symmetries --causal motions-- are associated to local one-parameter groups of transformations which are causal symmetries only for positive values of the parameter --one-parameter submonoids of causal symmetries--. The pull-back of the metric under each causal symmetry results in a new rank-2 future tensor, and we prove that there is always a set of null directions canonical to the causal symmetry. As a result of this it makes sense to classify causal symmetries according to the number of independent canonical null directions. This classification is maintained at the infinitesimal level where we find the necessary and sufficient conditions for a vector field to be a causal motion. They involve the Lie derivatives of the metric tensor and of the canonical null directions. In addition, we prove a stability property of these equations under the repeated application of the Lie operator. Monotonicity properties, constants of motion and conserved currents can be defined or built using casual motions. Some illustrative examples are presented.

New conservation laws for electromagnetic fields in gravity

A recently found (gr-qc/0303036) 2-index, symmetric, trace-free, divergence-free tensor is introduced for arbitrary source-free electromagnetic fields. The tensor can be constructed for any test Maxwell field in Einstein spaces (including proper vacuum), and more importantly for any Einstein-Maxwell spacetime. The tensor is explicitly given and analyzed in some special situations, such as general null electromagnetic fields, Reissner-Nordström solution, or classical electrodynamics. We present an explicit example where the conserved currents derived from the energy-momentum tensor using symmetries are trivial, but those derived from the new tensor are not.
