A duality-based approach to gradient flows of linear growth functionals

We study gradient flows of general functionals with linear growth with very weak assumptions. Classical results concerning characterisation of solutions require differentiability of the Lagrangian, as for the time-dependent minimal surface equation, or a special form of the Lagrangian as in the total variation flow. We propose to study this problem using duality techniques, give a general definition of solutions and prove their existence and uniqueness. This approach also allows us to reduce the regularity and structure assumptions on the Lagrangian.

Cahn-Hilliard Equations on Random Walk Spaces

In this paper we study a nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard model (CHE) in the framework of random walk spaces, which includes as particular cases, the CHE on locally finite weighted connected graphs, the CHE determined by finite Markov chains or the Cahn-Hilliard Equations driven by convolution integrable kernels. We consider different transitions for the phase and the chemical potential, and a large class of potentials including obstacle ones. We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions in $L^1$ of the Cahn-Hilliard Equation. We also show that the Cahn-Hilliard equation is the gradient flow of the Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional on an appropriate Hilbert space. We finally study the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions.

On the $p$-Laplacian evolution equation in metric measure spaces

The $p$-Laplacian evolution equation in metric measure spaces has been studied as the gradient flow in $L^2$ of the $p$-Cheeger energy (for $1 < p < \infty$). In this paper, using the first-order differential structure on a metric measure space introduced by Gigli, we characterize the subdifferential in $L^2$ of the $p$-Cheeger energy. This gives rise to a new definition of the $p$-Laplacian operator in metric measure spaces, which allows us to work with this operator in more detail. In this way, we introduce a new notion of solutions to the $p$-Laplacian evolution equation in metric measure spaces. For $p = 1$, we obtain a Green-Gauss formula similar to the one by Anzellotti for Euclidean spaces, and use it to characterise the $1$-Laplacian operator and study the total variation flow. We also study the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of the $p$-Laplacian evolution equation, showing that for $1 \leq p < 2$ we have finite extinction time.

The Cheeger Cut and Cheeger Problem in Metric Graphs

For discrete weighted graphs there is sufficient literature about the Cheeger cut and the Cheeger problem, but for metric graphs there are few results about these problems. Our aim is to study the Cheeger cut and the Cheeger problem in metric graphs. For that, we use the concept of total variation and perimeter in metric graphs introduced in \cite{Mazon}, which takes into account the jumps at the vertices of the functions of bounded variation. Moreover, we study the eigenvalue problem for the minus $1$-Laplacian operator in metric graphs, whereby we give a method to solve the optimal Cheeger cut problem.

$(s,p)$-harmonic approximation of functions of least $W^{s,1}$-seminorm

We investigate the convergence as $p\searrow1$ of the minimizers of the $W^{s,p}$-energy for $s\in(0,1)$ and $p\in(1,\infty)$ to those of the $W^{s,1}$-energy, both in the pointwise sense and by means of $Γ$-convergence. We also address the convergence of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations, and the equivalence between minimizers and weak solutions. As ancillary results, we study some regularity issues regarding minimizers of the $W^{s,1}$-energy.

The Neumann and Dirichlet problems for the total variation flow in metric measure spaces

We study the Neumann and Dirichlet problems for the total variation flow in metric measure spaces. We prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and study their asymptotic behaviour. Furthermore, in the Neumann problem we provide a notion of solutions which is valid for $L^1$ initial data, as well as prove their existence and uniqueness. Our main tools are the first-order linear differential structure due to Gigli and a version of the Gauss-Green formula.

The Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator associated with the $1$-Laplace operator and evolution problems

We present first results on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator associated with the $1$-Laplace operator in $L^1$. In particular, we show that this operator can be realized as a sub-differential operator in $L^1\times L^{\infty}$ of a homogeneous convex, continuous functional with effective domain $L^1$. Even though the Dirichlet problem associated with the $1$-Laplace operator loses the property that weak solutions for boundary data in $L^1$ are unique, we prove a type of stability/compactness result with respect to the boundary data in $L^1$ of this problem. We apply our results for the stationary Dirichlet problem to evolution problems governed by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator, which can equivalently be formulated as singular coupled elliptic-parabolic initial boundary-value problems. For initial data in $L^q$, $1\le q\le \infty$, we obtain well-posedness, that every mild solution is, indeed, a strong solution, and establish long-time stability of the semigroup generated by the negative Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator associated with the $1$-Laplace operator.

Least gradient functions in metric random walk spaces

In this paper we study least gradient functions in metric random walk spaces, which include as particular cases the least gradient functions on locally finite weighted connected graphs and nonlocal least gradient functions on $\mathbb{R}^N$. Assuming that a Poincaré inequality is satisfied, we study the Euler-Lagrange equation associated with the least gradient problem. We also prove the Poincaré inequality in a few settings.

On a nonlinear flux--limited equation arising in the transport of morphogens

Motivated by a mathematical model for the transport of morphogenes in biological systems, we study existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions for a mixed initial-boundary value problem associated with a nonlinear flux--limited diffusion system. From a mathematical point of view the problem behaves more as an hyperbolic system that a parabolic one.
