Monte Carlo reconstruction of symmetry-twisted partition function ratios: the critical 3D Ising

We introduce a Monte Carlo strategy for directly estimating partition function ratios between distinct global sectors of a lattice theory. It enlarges the configuration space to sample an interpolating family whose endpoints are the desired sectors, and uses flat histogram methods to reconstruct the corresponding free energy difference. Although the construction is more general, we focus here on the three-dimensional Ising model on the slab $\mathbb{R}^{2}\times S^{1}_{L_{z}}$ at the bulk critical point, comparing the untwisted periodic sector with the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-twisted antiperiodic sector. A large-volume and aspect ratio extrapolation gives the symmetry-twisted thermodynamic Casimir difference $Δ_{\mathbb{Z}_{2}}=0.327(2)$ directly, without lattice derivatives or bulk subtractions. This provides an independent twisted sector probe of tensions observed in periodic sector thermodynamic Casimir observables. More generally, the method gives direct but selective numerical access to CFT compactification data, including estimates of the effective thermal screening scale and the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-odd sector energy gap on $T^{2}$.

Effective strings and particles interacting in 3D: the Ising model

We study how a fluctuating domain wall in three dimensions modifies bulk observables in a gapped phase. We introduce an effective interaction between the wall and the lightest bulk massive mode, and identify the regime in which this description is controlled: nearly on-shell bulk exchange with small momentum along the wall. In this regime, several observables are controlled by a renormalized dimensionless coupling $λ$, including the large-$L_z$ correction to the wall free energy and the large-$|x_\perp|$ tail of two-point functions in the presence of the wall. Other observables, such as one-point functions and two-point functions in the nearby-regime, retain non-universal dependence on operator data and on the bulk spectral density. We test the universal kinematic consequences of wall fluctuations, and find good agreement with the predicted rough-wall broadening and nearby Gaussian behavior in Monte Carlo simulations of the 3D Ising model with anti-periodic boundary conditions.

Numerical tests of the large charge expansion

We perform Monte-Carlo measurements of two and three point functions of charged operators in the critical O(2) model in 3 dimensions. Our results are compatible with the predictions of the large charge superfluid effective field theory. To obtain reliable measurements for large values of the charge, we improved the Worm algorithm and devised a measurement scheme which mitigates the uncertainties due to lattice and finite size effects.

Search for continuous phase transitions in 5D pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory

The Renormalization Group (RG) is one of the central and modern techniques in quantum field theory. Indeed, quantum field theories can be understood as flows between fixed points of the RG flow, which represent Conformal Field Theories (CFT's). Hence, the search and classification of yet unknown non-trivial CFT's is a legitimate endeavor. Analytical considerations point to the existence of such a fixed point in pure SU(2) Yang-Mills fields in 5D. This issue has already been addressed, although inconclusively. We search for this putative fixed point using lattice Monte Carlo methods. An extended discussion can be found in [1].

Searching for continuous phase transitions in 5D SU(2) lattice gauge theory

We study the phase diagram of 5-dimensional $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills theory on the lattice. We consider two extensions of the fundamental plaquette Wilson action in the search for the continuous phase transition suggested by the $4+ε$ expansion. The extensions correspond to new terms in the action: i) a unit size plaquette in the adjoint representation or ii) a two-unit sided square plaquette in the fundamental representation. We use Monte Carlo to sample the first and second derivative of the entropy near the confinement phase transition, with lattices up to $12^{5}$. While we exclude the presence of a second order phase transition in the parameter space we sampled for model i), our data is not conclusive in some regions of the parameter space of model ii).
