Singularity resolution and unitarity in two-dimensional dilaton black holes with negative central charge

We study a one-loop corrected extension of the classical Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger (CGHS) model of two-dimensional dilaton gravity. The effective action combines the non-local Polyakov action for matter fluctuations, a Polyakov-type term built from an auxiliary flat metric that implements Strominger's mechanism for the Faddeev-Popov reparametrization ghosts, and a local counterterm that simultaneously preserves the flatness of the auxiliary metric, ensures exact solvability, and keeps two-dimensional Minkowski spacetime as an exact solution of the backreacted equations. In the regime of negative total central charge, the classical curvature singularity is resolved and gives way to asymptotically flat regions inside the horizon. The exterior Hawking flux is preserved and turns out to be correlated with an internal radiation flux supported on null surfaces that approach null infinity from beyond the horizon; this internal flux, in particular, presents a short interval of negative values. These correlations point to the preservation of unitarity, provided the relevant null surfaces remain at a finite affine distance from the collapsing matter trajectory. Within the present formulation, however, a fully consistent energy balance cannot yet be established. We discuss possible strategies to overcome this issue.

Singularity resolution in spherically reduced 2D semiclassical gravity with negative central charge

We analyze the semiclassical Schwarzschild geometry in the Boulware quantum state in the framework of two-dimensional (2D) dilaton gravity. The classical model is defined by the spherical reduction of Einstein's gravity sourced with conformal scalar fields. The expectation value of the stress-energy tensor in the Boulware state is singular at the classical horizon of the Schwarzschild spacetime, but when backreaction effects are considered, previous results have shown that the 2D geometry is horizonless and described by a non-symmetric wormhole with a curvature singularity on the other side of the throat. In this work we show that reversing the sign of the central charge of the conformal matter removes the curvature singularity of the 2D backreacted geometry, which happens to be horizonless and asymptotically flat. This result is consistent with a similar analysis recently performed for the CGHS model. We also argue the physical significance of negative central charges in conformal anomalies from a four-dimensional perspective.

Adiabatic regularization for massive and massless spin-$1$ fields

The adiabatic regularization method is likely the most direct and intuitive renormalization scheme for FLRW cosmologies. The method requires one to start with a nonvanishing mass, but massless theories can be studied by taking the massless limit at the end of the calculations. For spin-$1$, however, this limit changes the number of degrees of freedom, so it cannot be performed directly. In this work, we show a direct approach that begins with the canonical quantization of the physical degrees of freedom of a massive Proca field. We give the details of the construction and show that, in the massless limit, the renormalized stress-energy tensor of the Proca field is closely related to that of a minimally coupled scalar field. For completeness and pedagogical purposes, we also include a brief orientation to the adiabatic method for scalar fields. The construction of the adiabatic subtractions in momentum space is compared with that of the BPHZ method for renormalizing Feynman loop integrals.

Low Energy States and CPT invariance at the Big Bang

In this paper, we analyze the quantum vacuum in a radiation-dominated and CPT-invariant universe by further imposing the quantum states to be ultraviolet regular i.e., satisfying the Hadamard/adiabatic condition. For scalar fields, this is enforced by constructing the vacuum via the States of Low Energy proposal. For spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ fields, we extend this proposal for a FLRW spacetime and apply it for the radiation-dominated and CPT-invariant universe. We focus on minimizing the smeared energy density around the Big Bang and give strong evidence that the resulting states satisfy the Hadamard/adiabatic condition. These states are then self-consistent candidates as effective Big Bang quantum vacuum from the field theory perspective.

Black holes, conformal symmetry, and fundamental fields

Cosmic censorship protects the outside world from black hole singularities and paves the way for assigning entropy to gravity at the event horizons. We point out a tension between cosmic censorship and the quantum backreacted geometry of Schwarzschild black holes, induced by vacuum polarization and driven by the conformal anomaly. A similar tension appears for the Weyl curvature hypothesis at the Big Bang singularity. We argue that the requirement of exact conformal symmetry resolves both conflicts and has major implications for constraining the set of fundamental constituents of the Standard Model.

Adiabatic regularization for spin-$1$ fields

We analyze the adiabatic regularization scheme to renormalize Proca fields in a four-dimensional Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetime. The adiabatic method is well established for scalar and spin-$1/2$ fields, but is not yet fully understood for spin-$1$ fields. We give the details of the construction and show that, in the massless limit, the renormalized stress-energy tensor of the Proca field is closely related to that of a minimally coupled scalar field. Our result is in full agreement with other approaches, based on the effective action, which also show a discontinuity in the massless limit. The scalar field can be naturally regarded as a Stüeckelberg-type field. We also test the consistency of our results in de Sitter space.

Hadamard and boundary conditions for the Big Bang quantum vacuum

General relativity predicts final-type singularities inside black holes, as well as a cosmological initial-type singularity. Cosmic censorship protects external observers from black hole singularities, while Penrose's Weyl curvature hypothesis protects the smoothness of the initial (Big Bang) singularity. We discuss a simple realization of the Weyl curvature hypothesis by assuming a very early radiation-dominated universe and analytically extending the expansion factor to negative values of conformal time. We impose time-reversal conditions at the Big Bang to characterize a natural set of preferred vacuum states for quantized matter fields. We implement the prescription of States of Low Energy constructed around the Big Bang obtaining Hadamard states. We also explore the physical implications of these vacua for cosmological dark matter production.

Quantum corrections to the Schwarzschild metric from vacuum polarization

We explore static and spherically symmetric solutions of the 4-dimensional semiclassical Einstein's equations using the quantum vacuum polarization of a conformal field as a source. These solutions may be of interest for \black{the study of} exotic, compact objects (ECOs). The full backreaction problem is addressed by solving the semiclassical Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations making use of effective equations of state inspired \black{by} the trace anomaly and an extra simplifying and reasonable assumption. We combine analytical and numerical techniques to solve the resulting differential equations, both perturbatively and nonperturbatively in $\hbar$. In all cases the solution is similar to the Schwarzschild metric up to the vicinity of the classical horizon $r=2M$. However, at $r=2M + \varepsilon$, with $\varepsilon\sim O(\sqrt{\hbar})$, we find a coordinate singularity. In \black{the} case of matching with a static star, this leads to an upper bound in the compactness, and sets a constraint on the family of stable ECOs. We also study the corrections that the quantum-vacuum polarization induces on the propagation of waves, and discuss the implications. For the pure vacuum case, we can further extend the solution by using appropriate coordinates until we reach another singular point, where this time a null curvature singularity arises and prevents extending beyond. This picture qualitatively agrees with the results obtained in the effective two-dimensional approach, and reinforces the latter as a reasonable method.

Particle creation and the Schwinger model

We study the particle creation process in the Schwinger model coupled with an external classical source. One can approach the problem by taking advantage that the full quantized model is solvable and equivalent to a (massive) gauge field with a non-local effective action. Alternatively, one can also face the problem following the standard semiclassical route. This means quantizing the massless Dirac field and considering the electromagnetic field as a classical background. We evaluate the energy created by a generic, homogeneous, and time-dependent source. The results exactly match in both approaches. This proves in a very direct and economical way the validity of the semiclassical approach for the (massless) Schwinger model, in agreement with previous analysis based on the linear response equation. Our discussion suggests that a similar analysis for the massive Schwinger model could be used as a non-trivial laboratory to confront a fully quantized solvable model with its semiclassical approximation, therefore mimicking the long-standing confrontation of quantum gravity with quantum field theory in curved spacetime.

Renormalization and a non-adiabatic vacuum choice in a radiation-dominated universe

Vacuum and particles can be naturally defined in the adiabatic regime of an expanding universe. In general, however, there is no preferred choice of a vacuum state, unless the spacetime background possesses special symmetries. In the absence of symmetries the standard viewpoint is to construct distinguished adiabatic states permitting renormalizability of the stress-energy tensor. We study a special non-adiabatic vacuum for a massive scalar field in a radiation-dominated universe defined by imposing early-times conformal symmetry. We show that this state is consistent with renormalization, despite its ultraviolet behaviour is not the conventional one due to the emergence of oscillatory terms.

Particle creation by strong fields and quantum anomalies

Particle creation by strong and time-varying backgrounds is a robust prediction of quantum field theory. Another well-established feature of field theory is that classical symmetries do not always extend to the quantized theory. When this occurs, we speak of quantum anomalies. In this contribution we discuss the entwining relationship between both predictions, relating chiral anomalies with an underlying process of particle creation. Within this context, we will also argue that the symmetry under electric-magnetic duality rotations of the source-free Maxwell theory is anomalous in curved spacetime. This is a quantum effect, and it can be understood as the generalization of the fermion chiral anomaly to fields of spin one. This implies that the net polarization of photons propagating in a gravitational field could change in time.

Renormalization and decoupling for the Yukawa model in curved spacetime

We consider the renormalization of the one-loop effective action for the Yukawa interaction. We compute the beta functions in the generalized DeWitt-Schwinger subtraction scheme. For the quantized scalar field we obtain that all the beta functions exhibit decoupling for heavy fields as stated by the Appelquist-Carazzone theorem including also the gravitational couplings. For the quantized Dirac field, decoupling appears for almost all of them. We obtain the atypical result that the mass parameter of the background scalar field does not decouple.

Note on the pragmatic mode-sum regularization method: translational-splitting in a cosmological background

The point-splitting renormalization method offers a prescription to calculate finite expectation values of quadratic operators constructed from quantum fields in a general curved spacetime. It has been recently shown by Levi and Ori that when the background metric possesses an isometry, like stationary or spherically symmetric black holes, the method can be upgraded into a pragmatic procedure of renormalization that produces efficient numerical calculations. In this note we show that when the background enjoys three-dimensional spatial symmetries, like homogeneous expanding universes, the above pragmatic regularization technique reduces to the well established adiabatic regularization method.

Renormalization, running couplings and decoupling for the Yukawa model in curved spacetime

The decoupling of heavy fields as required by the Appelquist-Carazzone theorem plays a fundamental role in the construction of any effective field theory. However, it is not a trivial task to implement a renormalization prescription that produces the expected decoupling of massive fields, and it is even more difficult in curved spacetime. Focused on this idea, we consider the renormalization of the one-loop effective action for the Yukawa interaction with a background scalar field in curved space. We compute the beta functions within a generalized DeWitt-Schwinger subtraction procedure and discuss the decoupling in the running of the coupling constants. For the case of a quantized scalar field, all the beta function exhibit decoupling, including also the gravitational ones. For a quantized Dirac field, decoupling appears almost for all the beta functions. We obtain the anomalous result that the mass of the background scalar field does not decouple.
