Brjuno condition through best approximations and the linearization problem

We consider the classical analytic linearization problem for vector fields on the torus $\mathbb{T}^d$ close to a constant vector field $ω$. Our goals are twofold. First, we provide a geometric framework in which the arithmetic condition governing analytic linearization arises naturally from the orbit of a unimodular lattice associated with $ω$ under a diagonal flow on $\operatorname{SL}(d,\mathbb{Z})\backslash \operatorname{SL}(d,\mathbb{R})$. Within this framework, a summability condition emerges as the natural criterion for convergence. We prove that it is equivalent to several classical formulations of the Brjuno condition for linear forms, including those involving best approximation vectors and switching times of the diagonal flow. As a byproduct, we obtain a new quantitative linearization theorem with fully explicit estimates. In particular, the loss of analyticity of the conjugacy is controlled by a Brjuno function.

Lyapunov exponents and rigidity in random billiards and standard maps

We study random dynamical systems generated by measure-preserving maps, possibly with singularities. For this class of systems, we establish an invariance principle: if all Lyapunov exponents coincide almost everywhere, then there exists an invariant measurable family of probability measures on the projective tangent bundle for the projective cocycle induced by the derivative. We apply this principle to random additive perturbations of two classes of maps: billiard maps for strictly convex tables on surfaces of constant curvature and generalized standard maps. In both settings, we obtain rigidity results: the Lyapunov exponents vanish almost everywhere precisely for billiards in geodesic disks and generalized standard maps with constant potential; in all other cases, they are nonzero almost everywhere.

Generic properties of planar symplectic billiards

We study generic properties of planar symplectic billiards, a symplectic analogue of classical Birkhoff billiards introduced by P. Albers and S. Tabachnikov. We prove that, for a residual set of $C^\infty$ strongly convex domains, periodic symplectic billiard trajectories are in general position and non-degenerate. We also prove a Franks' lemma for symplectic billiards and deduce that stably hyperbolic periodic points form a hyperbolic set given by the closure of the set of hyperbolic periodic points. We further show that, for a residual set of $C^\infty$ strongly convex domains, elliptic periodic points are stable and hyperbolic periodic points have transverse homoclinic points. Based on these results, we conclude that --generically-- $C^\infty$ strongly convex symplectic billiard has positive topological entropy.

Billiards in generic convex bodies have positive topological entropy

We show that there exists a $C^2$ open dense set of convex bodies with smooth boundary whose billiard map exhibits a non-trivial hyperbolic basic set. As a consequence billiards in generic convex bodies have positive topological entropy and exponential growth of the number of periodic orbits.

Chaotic time series in financial processes consisting of savings with piecewise constant monthly contributions

We investigate the time series generated by an elementary and deterministic financial process that consists in making monthly contributions to a savings account subjected to the devaluation by a monthly negative real interest rate. The monthly contribution is a piecewise constant function of the account balance. We show that a dichotomy holds for such a financial time series: either the financial time series are asymptotic to finitely many periodic sequences or the financial time series have an uncountable (Cantor) set of ω-limit points. We also provide explicit parameters for which the financial process is chaotic in the sense that the financial time series have sensitive dependence on initial conditions at points of a Cantor attractor.

Hausdorff dimension of the exceptional set of interval piecewise affine contractions

Let $I=[0,1)$, $-1<λ<1$ and $f\colon I\to I$ be a piecewise $λ$-affine map of the interval $I$, i.e., there exist a partition $0=a_0<a_1<\cdots< a_{k-1}<a_k=1$ of the interval $I$ into $k\geq2$ subintervals and $b_1,\ldots, b_k\in\mathbb{R}$ such that $f(x)=λx+ b_i$ for every $x\in[a_{i-1},a_{i})$ and $i=1,\ldots,k$. The exceptional set $\mathcal{E}_f$ of $f$ is the set of parameters $δ\in\mathbb{R}$ such that $R_δ\circ f$ is not asymptotically periodic, where $R_δ\colon I\to I$ is the rotation of angle $δ$. In this paper we prove that $\mathcal{E}_f$ has zero Hausdorff dimension. We derive this result from a more general theorem concerning piecewise Lipschitz contractions on $\mathbb{R}$ that has independent interest.

Dynamics of piecewise increasing contractions

Let $I_1=[a_0,a_1),\ldots,I_{k}= [a_{k-1},a_k)$ be a partition of the interval $I=[0,1)$ into $k$ subintervals. Let $f:I\to I$ be a map such that each restriction $f|_{I_i}$ is an increasing Lipschitz contraction. We prove that any $f$ admits at most $k$ periodic orbits, where the upper bound is sharp. We are also interested in the dynamics of piecewise linear $λ$-affine maps, where $0<λ<1$. Let $b_1,\ldots,b_k$ be real numbers and let $F_λ: I\to \mathbb{R}$ be a function such that each restriction $F_λ|_{I_i}(x)=λx +b_i$. Under a generic assumption on the parameters $a_1,\ldots,a_{k-1},b_1,\ldots,b_k$, we prove that, up to a zero Hausdorff dimension set of slopes $λ$, the $ω$-limit set of the piecewise $λ$-affine maps $f_λ:x\in I \mapsto F_λ(x)\pmod{1}$ at every point equals a periodic orbit and there exist at most $k$ periodic orbits. Moreover, let $\mathfrak{E}^{(k)}$ be the exceptional set of parameters $λ,a_1,\ldots,a_{k-1},b_1,\ldots,b_k$ which define non-asymptotically periodic $f$, we prove that $\mathfrak{E}^{(k)}$ is a Lebesgue null measure set whose Hausdorff dimension is large or equal to $k$.

Periodic attractor in the discrete time best-response dynamics of the Rock-Paper-Scissors game

The Rock-Paper-Scissors (RPS) game is a classic non-cooperative game widely studied in terms of its theoretical analysis as well as in its applications, ranging from sociology and biology to economics. Many experimental results of the RPS game indicate that this game is better modelled by the discretized best-response dynamics rather than continuous time dynamics. In this work we show that the attractor of the discrete time best-response dynamics of the RPS game is finite and periodic. Moreover we also describe the bifurcations of the attractor and determine the exact number, period and location of the periodic strategies.

Hyperbolic polygonal billiards close to 1-dimensional piecewise expanding maps

We consider polygonal billiards with collisions contracting the reflection angle towards the normal to the boundary of the table. In previous work, we proved that such billiards has a finite number of ergodic SRB measures supported on hyperbolic generalized attractors. Here we study the relation of these measures with the ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures (acips) of the slap map, the 1-dimensional map obtained from the billiard map when the angle of reflection is always equal to zero. Our main result states that for a generic polygon, if the reflection law has a Lipschitz constant sufficiently small, then there exists a one-to-one correspondence between the ergodic SRB measures of the billiard map and the ergodic acips of the corresponding slap map, and moreover that the number of Bernoulli components of each ergodic SRB measure equals the number of the exact components of the corresponding ergodic acip. The case of billiards in regular polygons and triangles is studied in detail.

On the attractor of piecewise expanding maps of the interval

We consider piecewise expanding maps of the interval with finitely many branches of monotonicity and show that they are generically combinatorially stable, i.e., the number of ergodic attractors and their corresponding mixing periods do not change under small perturbations of the map. Our methods provide a topological description of the attractor and, in particular, give an elementary proof of the density of periodic orbits.

Asymptotic periodicity in outer billiards with contraction

We show that for almost every $(P,λ)$ where $P$ is a convex polygon and $λ\in(0,1)$, the corresponding outer billiard about $P$ with contraction $λ$ is asymptotically periodic, i.e., has a finite number of periodic orbits and every orbit is attracted to one of them.

Renormalization of Gevrey vector fields with a Brjuno type arithmetical condition

We show that in the Gevrey topology, a $d$-torus flow close enough to linear with a unique rotation vector $ω$ is linearizable as long as $ω$ satisfies a Brjuno type diophantine condition. The proof is based on the fast convergence under renormalization of the associated Gevrey vector field. It requires a multidimensional continued fractions expansion of $ω$, and the corresponding characterization of the Brjuno type vectors. This demonstrates that renormalization methods deal very naturally with Gevrey regularity expressed in the decay of Fourier coefficients. In particular, they provide linearization for frequencies beyond diophantine in non-analytic topologies.

$λ$-stability of periodic billiard orbits

We introduce a new notion of stability for periodic orbits in polygonal billiards. We say that a periodic orbit of a polygonal billiard is $λ$-stable if there is a periodic orbit for the corresponding pinball billiard which converges to it as $λ$ $\rightarrow$ 1. This notion of stability is unrelated to the notion introduced by Galperin, Stepin and Vorobets. We give sufficient and necessary conditions for a periodic orbit to be $λ$-stable and prove that the set of d-gons having at most finite number of $λ$-stable periodic orbits is dense is the space of d-gons. Moreover, we also determine completely the $λ$-stable periodic orbits in integrable polygons.

Hyperbolic billiards on polytopes with contracting reflection laws

We study billiards on polytopes in $\Rr^d$ with contracting reflection laws, i.e. non-standard reflection laws that contract the reflection angle towards the normal. We prove that billiards on generic polytopes are uniformly hyperbolic provided there exists a positive integer $k$ such that for any $k$ consecutive collisions, the corresponding normals of the faces of the polytope where the collisions took place generate $\Rr^d$. As an application of our main result we prove that billiards on generic polytopes are uniformly hyperbolic if either the contracting reflection law is sufficiently close to the specular or the polytope is obtuse. Finally, we study in detail the billiard on a family of $3$-dimensional simplexes.

Hyperbolic polygonal billiards with finitely many ergodic SRB measures

We study polygonal billiards with reflection laws contracting the reflected angle towards the normal. It is shown that if a polygon does not have parallel sides facing each other, then the corresponding billiard map has finitely many ergodic SRB measures whose basins cover a set of full Lebesgue measure.

Ergodicity of polygonal slap maps

Polygonal slap maps are piecewise affine expanding maps of the interval obtained by projecting the sides of a polygon along their normals onto the perimeter of the polygon. These maps arise in the study of polygonal billiards with non-specular reflections laws. We study the absolutely continuous invariant probabilities of the slap maps for several polygons, including regular polygons and triangles. We also present a general method for constructing polygons with slap maps having more than one ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability.

Dissipative outer billiards: a case study

We study dissipative polygonal outer billiards, i.e. outer billiards about convex polygons with a contractive reflection law. We prove that dissipative outer billiards about any triangle and the square are asymptotically periodic, i.e. they have finitely many global attracting periodic orbits. A complete description of the bifurcations of the periodic orbits as the contraction rates vary is given. For the square billiard, we also show that the asymptotic periodic behavior is robust under small perturbations of the vertices and the contraction rates. Finally, we describe some numerical experiments suggesting that dissipative outer billiards about regular polygon are generically asymptotically periodic.

SRB measures for hyperbolic polygonal billiards

We prove that polygonal billiards with contracting reflection laws exhibit hyperbolic attractors with countably many ergodic SRB measures. These measures are robust under small perturbations of the reflection law, and the tables for which they exist form a generic set in the space of all polygons. Specific polygonal tables are studied in detail.
