On integration in Banach spaces and total sets

Let $X$ be a Banach space and $Γ\subseteq X^*$ a total linear subspace. We study the concept of $Γ$-integrability for $X$-valued functions $f$ defined on a complete probability space, i.e. an analogue of Pettis integrability by dealing only with the compositions $\langle x^*,f \rangle$ for $x^*\in Γ$. We show that $Γ$-integrability and Pettis integrability are equivalent whenever $X$ has Plichko's property ($\mathcal{D}'$) (meaning that every $w^*$-sequentially closed subspace of $X^*$ is $w^*$-closed). This property is enjoyed by many Banach spaces including all spaces with $w^*$-angelic dual as well as all spaces which are $w^*$-sequentially dense in their bidual. A particular case of special interest arises when considering $Γ=T^*(Y^*)$ for some injective operator $T:X \to Y$. Within this framework, we show that if $T:X \to Y$ is a semi-embedding, $X$ has property ($\mathcal{D}'$) and $Y$ has the Radon-Nikodým property, then $X$ has the weak Radon-Nikodým property. This extends earlier results by Delbaen (for separable $X$) and Diestel and Uhl (for weakly $\mathcal{K}$-analytic $X$).

Weak$^*$-sequential properties of Johnson-Lindenstrauss spaces

A Banach space $X$ is said to have Efremov's property ($\mathcal{E}$) if every element of the weak$^*$-closure of a convex bounded set $C \subseteq X^*$ is the weak$^*$-limit of a sequence in $C$. By assuming the Continuum Hypothesis, we prove that there exist maximal almost disjoint families of infinite subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ for which the corresponding Johnson-Lindenstrauss spaces enjoy (resp. fail) property ($\mathcal{E}$). This is related to a gap in [A. Plichko, Three sequential properties of dual Banach spaces in the weak$^*$ topology, Topology Appl. 190 (2015), 93--98] and allows to answer (consistently) questions of Plichko and Yost.

The free Banach lattice generated by a Banach space

The free Banach lattice over a Banach space is introduced and analyzed. This generalizes the concept of free Banach lattice over a set of generators, and allows us to study the Nakano property and the density character of non-degenerate intervals on these spaces, answering some recent questions of B. de Pagter and A.W. Wickstead. Moreover, an example of a Banach lattice which is weakly compactly generated as a lattice but not as a Banach space is exhibited, thus answering a question of J. Diestel.

A class of weakly compact sets in Lebesgue-Bochner spaces

Let $X$ be a Banach space and $μ$ a probability measure. A set $K \subseteq L^1(μ,X)$ is said to be a $δ\mathcal{S}$-set if it is uniformly integrable and for every $δ>0$ there is a weakly compact set $W \subseteq X$ such that $μ(f^{-1}(W)) \geq 1-δ$ for every $f\in K$. This is a sufficient, but in general non necessary, condition for relative weak compactness in $L^1(μ,X)$. We say that $X$ has property ($δ\mathcal{S}_μ$) if every relatively weakly compact subset of $L^1(μ,X)$ is a $δ\mathcal{S}$-set. In this paper we study $δ\mathcal{S}$-sets and Banach spaces having property ($δ\mathcal{S}_μ$). We show that testing on uniformly bounded sets is enough to check this property. New examples of spaces having property ($δ\mathcal{S}_μ$) are provided. Special attention is paid to the relationship with strongly weakly compactly generated (SWCG) spaces. In particular, we show an example of a SWCG (in fact, separable Schur) space failing property ($δ\mathcal{S}_μ$) when $μ$ is the Lebesgue measure on $[0,1]$.

Tukey classification of some ideals in $ω$ and the lattices of weakly compact sets in Banach spaces

We study the lattice structure of the family of weakly compact subsets of the unit ball $B_X$ of a separable Banach space $X$, equipped with the inclusion relation (this structure is denoted by $\mathcal{K}(B_X)$) and also with the parametrized family of almost inclusion relations $K \subseteq L+εB_X$, where $ε>0$ (this structure is denoted by $\mathcal{AK}(B_X)$). Tukey equivalence between partially ordered sets and a suitable extension to deal with $\mathcal{AK}(B_X)$ are used. Assuming the axiom of analytic determinacy, we prove that separable Banach spaces fall into four categories, namely: $\mathcal{K}(B_X)$ is equivalent either to a singleton, or to $ω^ω$, or to the family $\mathcal{K}(\mathbb{Q})$ of compact subsets of the rational numbers, or to the family $[\mathfrak{c}]^{<ω}$ of all finite subsets of the continuum. Also under the axiom of analytic determinacy, a similar classification of $\mathcal{AK}(B_X)$ is obtained. For separable Banach spaces not containing $\ell^1$, we prove in ZFC that $\mathcal{K}(B_X) \sim \mathcal{AK}(B_X)$ are equivalent to either $\{0\}$, $ω^ω$, $\mathcal{K}(\mathbb{Q})$ or $[\mathfrak{c}]^{<ω}$. The lattice structure of the family of all weakly null subsequences of an unconditional basis is also studied.

Convex combinations of weak*-convergent sequences and the Mackey topology

A Banach space $X$ is said to have property (K) if every $w^*$-convergent sequence in $X^*$ admits a convex block subsequence which converges with respect to the Mackey topology. We study the connection of this property with strongly weakly compactly generated Banach spaces and its stability under subspaces, quotients and $\ell^p$-sums. We extend a result of Frankiewicz and Plebanek by proving that property (K) is preserved by $\ell^1$-sums of less than $\mathfrak{p}$ summands. Without any cardinality restriction, we show that property (K) is stable under $\ell^p$-sums for $1<p<\infty$.

Weakly compactly generated Banach lattices

We study the different ways in which a weakly compact set can generate a Banach lattice. Among other things, it is shown that in an order continuous Banach lattice $X$, the existence of a weakly compact set $K \subset X$ such that $X$ coincides with the band generated by $K$, implies that $X$ is WCG.

On the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobas property for numerical radius in C(K)-spaces

We study the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobas property for numerical radius within the framework of C(K) spaces. We present several sufficient conditions on a compact space K ensuring that C(K) has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobas property for numerical radius. In particular, we show that C(K) has such property whenever K is metrizable.

On Baire measurability in spaces of continuous functions

Let C(K) be the Banach space of all continuous functions on a given compact space K. We investigate the w*-sequential closure in C(K)* of the set of all finitely supported probabilities on K. We discuss the coincidence of the Baire sigma-algebras on C(K) associated to the weak and pointwise convergence topologies.

A weak* separable C(K)* space whose unit ball is not weak* separable

We provide a ZFC example of a compact space K such that C(K)* is w*-separable but its closed unit ball is not w*-separable. All previous examples of such kind had been constructed under CH. We also discuss the measurability of the supremum norm on that C(K) equipped with its weak Baire sigma-algebra.

Measurability in C(2^k) and Kunen cardinals

A cardinal k is called a Kunen cardinal if the sigma-algebra on k x k generated by all products AxB, coincides with the power set of k x k. For any cardinal k, let C(2^k) be the Banach space of all continuous real-valued functions on the Cantor cube 2^k. We prove that k is a Kunen cardinal if and only if the Baire sigma-algebra on C(2^k) for the pointwise convergence topology coincides with the Borel sigma-algebra on C(2^k) for the norm topology. Some other links between Kunen cardinals and measurability in Banach spaces are also given.

The McShane integral in weakly compactly generated spaces

Di Piazza and Preiss asked whether every Pettis integrable function defined on [0,1] and taking values in a weakly compactly generated Banach space is McShane integrable. In this paper we answer this question in the negative.
