A supersymmetric model for graphene

In this work, we focus on the fermionic structure of the low-energy excitations of graphene (a monolayer of carbon atoms) to propose a new supersymmetric field-theoretic model for this physical system. In the current literature, other proposals for describing graphene physics have been contemplated at the level of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Also, by observing the inhomogeneities between neighbor carbon atoms, Jackiw {\it et al.} have set up an interesting chiral Abelian gauge theory. We show in this paper that our formulation encompasses models discussed previously as sectors of an actually richer (supersymmetric) planar gauge model. Possible interpretations for the fields involved in the present graphene model are proposed and the question of supersymmetry breaking is discussed.

Standstill Electric Charge Generates Magnetostatic Field Under Born-Infeld Electrodynamics

The Abelian Born-Infeld classical non-linear electrodynamic has been used to investigate the electric and magnetostatic fields generated by a point-like electrical charge at rest in an inertial frame. The results show a rich internal structure for the charge. Analytical solutions have also been found. Such findings have been interpreted in terms of vacuum polarization and magnetic-like charges produced by the very high strengths of the electric field considered. Apparently non-linearity is to be accounted for the emergence of an anomalous magnetostatic field suggesting a possible connection to that created by a magnetic dipole composed of two mognetic charges with opposite signals. Consistently in situations where the Born-Infeld field strength parameter is free to become infinite, Maxwell`s regime takes over, the magnetic sector vanishes and the electric field assumes a Coulomb behavior with no trace of a magnetic component. The connection to other monopole solutions, like Dirac`s, t' Hooft`s or Poliakov`s types, are also discussed. Finally some speculative remarks are presented in an attempt to explain such fields.

Supersymmetry and Integrability in Planar Mechanical Systems

We present an N=2-supersymmetric mechanical system whose bosonic sector, with two degrees of freedom, stems from the reduction of an SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with the assumption of spatially homogeneous field configurations and a particular ansatz imposed on the gauge potentials in the dimensional reduction procedure. The Painleve test is adopted to discuss integrability and we focus on the role of supersymmetry and parity invariance in two space dimensions for the attainment of integrable or chaotic models. Our conclusion is that the relationships among the parameters imposed by supersymmetry seem to drastically reduce the number of possibilities for integrable interaction potentials of the mechanical system under consideration.

On the Potentials of Supersymmetric Theories with Gauge-Field Mixing Terms

In this letter, we reconsider the delicate issue of symmetry and supersymmetry breakings for gauge theories with gauge-field mixings. The purpose is to study generalyzed potentials in the presence of more than a single gauge potential. In this work, following a stream of investigation on supersymmetric gauge theories without flat directions, we contemplate the possibility of building up D- and F-term potentials by means of a gauge-field mixing in connection with a U(1)x U(1)' -symmetry. We investigate a generalized potential including an N=1 supersymmetric extension of the Maxwell-Chern-Simons model focusing on the study of cosmic string configurations. This analysis sheds some light on the formation of cosmic strings for model with violation of Lorentz symmetry.

Exact Scale Invariance of the BF-Yang-Mills Theory in Three Dimensions

The ``extended'' BF-Yang-Mills theory in 3 dimensions, which contains a minimally coupled scalar field, is shown to be ultraviolet finite. It obeys a trivial Callan-Symanzik equation, with all beta-functions and anomalous dimensions vanishing. The proof is based on an anomaly-free trace identity valid to all orders of perturbation theory.

On the Non-Renormalization Properties of Gauge Theories with Chern-Simons Terms

Considering three-dimensional Chern-Simons theory, either coupled to matter or with a Yang-Mills term, we show the validity of a trace identity, playing the role of a local form of the Callan-Symanzik equation, in all orders of perturbation theory. From this we deduce the vanishing of the $β$-function associated to the Chern-Simons coupling constant and the full finiteness in the case of the Yang-Mills Chern-Simons theory. The main ingredient in the proof of the latter property is the noninvariance of the Chern-Simons form under the gauge transformations. Our results hold for the three-dimensional Chern-Simons model in a general Riemannian manifold.
