Isotropic universes with a preferred direction

We present a class of cosmological scenarios in which a preferred spatial direction in the matter sector coexists with an exactly homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann--Lema\^ıtre--Robertson--Walker (FLRW) geometry. The Cosmological Principle is realized on shell, with the vector-field equations enforcing a vanishing momentum density and suitable interactions eliminating the anisotropic stress. Consequently, the construction yields an entire FLRW branch without tuning the matter-field initial conditions. The preferred direction reemerges in perturbations, producing direction-dependent propagation and mixing among scalar, vector, and tensor modes already at linear order. In particular, the mixing opens a linear channel through which perturbations in the scalar sector can in principle source gravitational waves. Our construction thus reveals a new route by which preferred-direction physics can leave observable cosmological signatures while remaining hidden in the background geometry.

A solid unification of the dark sector

We construct a unified description of dark matter and dark energy in terms of a single dark component that behaves as a pressureless fluid in the early Universe and undergoes a transition to a solid phase at late times that can support accelerated expansion. A generalized Chaplygin-type solid provides a simple realization of this scenario. The solid nature of the dark medium prevents the instabilities and strong acoustic oscillations that typically arise in perfect-fluid unifications. It also gives rise to distinctive signatures in cosmological perturbations, such as a suppression of structure growth, a nontrivial gravitational slip, and an effective mass for gravitational waves. Since these effects share a common origin in the solid phase, they become relevant only at low redshifts, leaving the high-redshift cosmology essentially unmodified. This demonstrates that a solidly unified dark sector can reproduce the desired background transition from dark matter to dark energy while yielding testable imprints in cosmological perturbations.

Hybrid quantum-classical simulations of semiclassical gravity

We propose a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm for the simulation of real-time dynamics in interacting quantum field theories coupled to classical fields, focusing on the self-consistent estimation of semiclassical backreaction. By discretizing space and time, we construct an iterative protocol that simulates the Trotterized dynamics of the quantum fields subject to the dynamical classical fields. By estimating certain quantum expectation values through a set of projective measurements, we source the equations of motion of the classical fields, and solve them numerically to feed them forward to the quantum simulation in an iterative self-consistent loop. Semiclassical backreaction is relevant in various fields of physics, particularly in cosmology, where quantum matter fluctuations affect the gravitational field dynamics, and a controlled renormalization must be carefully considered to get a sensible continuum limit. We benchmark our algorithm in this context, focusing on scalar-tensor theories of modified gravity exhibiting a chameleon mechanism, such that a light classical scalar field driving cosmic acceleration becomes massive in high-density regions, effectively screening any possible yet unobserved fifth force. By focusing on numerically tractable regimes, we explicitly show the convergence and robustness of our algorithm when considering the continuum limit and the effect of quantum shot noise. Our work paves the way for future experiments exploring other non-tractable regimes, including non-perturbative interactions of the quantum fields and how these can change backreaction and the gravitational dynamics.

Revisiting observational constraints on coupled exponential quintessence with energy and momentum transfers: degeneracy with massive neutrinos

We investigate the impact of massive neutrinos on cosmological models in which dark energy, described by a quintessence scalar field $ϕ$ with an exponential potential, interacts with dark matter through both energy and momentum transfers. Previous analyses have shown that the inclusion of low-redshift data tends to favour the detection of a pure momentum transfer between the dark sectors, consistent with the fact that such a transfer generically suppresses the growth of cosmic structures. Since massive neutrinos also reduce matter clustering, a potential degeneracy between the interaction parameters and the neutrino mass may arise. After updating the observational constraints on the model parameters obtained in earlier studies, we investigate the effect of allowing the neutrino mass to vary. We find that the detection of momentum transfer degrades once massive neutrinos are included. This occurs because a new degeneracy emerges between the neutrino mass and the parameter governing the energy exchange between dark energy and dark matter. Our findings differ from previous results in the literature, where the detection of momentum transfer was reported to be robust against varying neutrino masses. This suggests that the robustness of such detections depends on the underlying model and should therefore be carefully reassessed for each specific interacting scenario.

Effective field theory of coupled dark energy and dark matter

We formulate an effective field theory (EFT) of coupled dark energy (DE) and dark matter (DM) interacting through energy and momentum transfers. In the DE sector, we exploit the EFT of vector-tensor theories with the presence of a preferred time direction on the cosmological background. This prescription allows one to accommodate shift-symmetric and non-shift-symmetric scalar-tensor theories by taking a particular weak coupling limit, with and without consistency conditions respectively. We deal with the DM sector as a non-relativistic perfect fluid, which can be described by a system of three scalar fields. By choosing a unitary gauge in which the perturbations in the DE and DM sectors are eaten by the metric, we incorporate the leading-order operators that characterize the energy and momentum transfers besides those present in the conventional EFT of vector-tensor and scalar-tensor theories and the non-relativistic perfect fluid. We express the second-order action of scalar perturbations in real space in terms of time- and scale-dependent dimensionless EFT parameters and derive the linear perturbation equations of motion by taking into account additional matter (baryons, radiation). In the small-scale limit, we obtain conditions for the absence of both ghosts and Laplacian instabilities and discuss how they are affected by the DE-DM interactions. We also compute the effective DM gravitational coupling $G_{\rm eff}$ by using a quasi-static approximation for perturbations deep inside the DE sound horizon and show that the existence of momentum and energy transfers allow a possibility to realize $G_{\rm eff}$ smaller than in the uncoupled case at low redshift.

K-nonizing

We unveil the dynamical equivalence of field theories with non-canonical kinetic terms and canonical theories with a volume element invariant under transverse diffeomorphisms. The proof of the equivalence also reveals a subtle connection between the standard Legendre transformation and the so-called Clairaut equation. Explicit examples of canonizable theories include classes of $k$-essence, non-linear electrodynamics, or $f(R)$ theories. The equivalence can also be extended to the class of mimetic theories.

Euclidean teleparallel relativity and black hole partition functions

The Euclidean path integral approach to quantum gravity is conventionally formulated in terms of the Einstein-Hilbert-York-Gibbons-Hawking action, which requires suitable subtractions to produce the correct black hole partition function. However, there is a unique, canonical teleparallel reformulation which reproduces the same results without subtractions or other ambiguities. This is verified in the case of a black hole with or without an electric or a magnetic charge and in a background with or without a cosmological constant. Moreover, a new quasilocal prescription is proposed and tested, where the black hole partition function is determined solely by the horizon boundary term, yielding the correct Helmholtz free energy without the need for counterterms.

Finite size effects in DBI and Born-Infeld for screened spherically symmetric objects

We study finite size effects on the linear response of spherically symmetric objects in Born-Infeld (BI) electromagnetism and Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scalar field theories. Previous works show that the linear response coefficients for a point-like source vanish for odd multipoles above the dipole, a feature that resembles the vanishing of Love numbers for black holes. This work goes beyond the point-like idealisation and considers a sphere of finite radius. We find that the vanishing of the linear response coefficients ceases as they acquire a correction due to the finite size of the object. This introduces a hierarchy between the even and odd multipoles of the response coefficients determined by the separation of scales between the radius of the sphere and the screening scale of non-linearities. From a phenomenological viewpoint, the hierarchy between the odd and even multipoles would give access to the screening scale and the object's radius by measuring the behaviour of the potentials at infinity.

Moving superfluids in the rotating universe

We study homogeneous cosmological models featuring shift-symmetric scalar fields (or, superfluids) in relative motion. In the presence of anisotropy this universe generally features rotation, in the sense that the principal axes of anisotropic expansion rotate with respect to the cosmic comoving frame. We focus in particular on the minimal case of two superfluids in 2+1 dimensions. The momentum constraint enforces their spatial gradients to be collinear and the dynamics tends to align such a direction with that of maximal expansion at late times. As opposed to the recently studied case of solids, rotation plays a more important role in the present two-superfluids model. The associated energy density does not dilute away but scales as that of anisotropy and affects the total equation of state. We find that purely non-rotating solutions correspond to an unstable surface in phase space in the direction of non-vanishing rotation. This suggests that rotation is a crucial feature of these scenarios that cannot be neglected.

Non-linear structure formation with elastic interactions in the dark sector

Cosmological models where dark matter interacts with dark energy via a pure momentum transfer and with no energy exchange (i.e. elastic) provide compelling scenarios for addressing the apparent lack of structures at low redshift. In particular, it has been shown that measurements of $S_8$ may show a statistically significant preference for the presence of elastic interactions. In this work we implement a specific realisation of these scenarios into an $N$-body code to explore the non-linear regime. We include two populations of particles to describe the interacting dark matter and the non-interacting baryons respectively. On linear scales we recover the suppression of structures obtained from Boltzmann codes, while non-linear scales exhibit an enhancement of the matter power. We find that fewer massive halos are formed at low redshift as a consequence of the elastic interaction and that dark matter halos are more compact than in the standard model. Furthermore, the ratio of dark matter and baryons density profiles is not constant. Finally, we corroborate that baryons efficiently cluster around dark matter halos so they provide good tracers of the dark matter velocity field despite the presence of the interaction. This shows that the interaction is not sufficiently strong as to disrupt virialised structures.

Horndeski in motion

We study a class of homogeneous but anisotropic cosmologies within the family of shift-symmetric Horndeski theories, where the scalar field features an inhomogeneous profile but it preserves a translational symmetry that is realised as a combination of spatial translations and internal shifts. The spatial gradient of the scalar field introduces a preferred direction, so the resulting cosmologies are of the axisymmetric Bianchi I type. The momentum density of these configurations exhibits a universal evolution and an additional component with non-vanishing momentum density is required to have non-trivial effects. We show the relation of these scenarios with cosmologies of non-comoving components and, in particular, we explain how they provide a specific realisation of moving dark energy models. Among the class of shift-symmetric Horndeski theories, we analyse in more detail the case of Kinetic Gravity Braiding with emphasis on its application to moving dark energy models and its effects on large scale dark flows as well as the CMB dipole and quadrupole.

A class of ghost-free theories in symmetric teleparallel geometry

Theories formulated in the arena of teleparallel geometries are generically plagued by ghost-like instabilities or other pathologies that are ultimately caused by the breaking of some symmetries. In this work, we construct a class of ghost-free theories based on a symmetry under Transverse Diffeomorphisms that is naturally realised in symmetric teleparallelism. We explicitly show their equivalence to a family of theories with an extra scalar field plus a global degree of freedom and how Horndeski theories and healthy couplings to matter fields can be readily accommodated.

On Evidence for Elastic Interactions in the Dark Sector

The increasing quality of cosmological data has revealed some tensions that could be signalling the necessity of incorporating new physics into our cosmological model. One particularly intriguing possibility is the existence of elastic interactions between dark matter and dark energy. Not only do these interactions provide a natural mechanism to relief cosmological tensions, but there is also compelling observational evidence for them, to the extent that a detection could even be claimed. We review the potential of these scenarios in relation to the cosmological tensions and discuss distinctive signatures that can be probed with future data, thus providing a smoking gun for these interactions.

Mimicking wormholes in Born-Infeld electrodynamics

We compute the evolution of linear perturbations on top of a background solution of a general nonlinear electromagnetic theory. This evolution can be described in terms of two effective metrics, and we analyse under what conditions they are conformally related, so that they can be regarded as analogue models of non-trivial gravitational fields in the eikonal approximation. This is the case of Born-Infeld theory. For the background created by a static point electric charge in the Born-Infeld theory, the effective metric describes a wormhole geometry for light rays. Depending on the impact parameter, incoming light rays are either scattered to infinity or approach the wormhole slowing down their pace until they hit the charge at vanishing speed. The same effective wormhole geometry is obtained for a magnetic monopole and a dyon and we relate it to the duality invariance of Born-Infeld electromagnetism. Finally, we analyse the scalar Dirac-Born-Infeld theory and show that the effective wormhole geometry is not generated by a particle with scalar charge.

Resilience of DBI screened objects and their ladder symmetries

Scalar field theories with a shift symmetry come equipped with the $K$-mouflage (or kinetic screening) mechanism that suppresses the scalar interaction between massive objects below a certain distance, the screening radius. In this work, we study the linear response of the scalar field distribution around a screened (point-like) object subject to a long range external scalar field perturbation for the Dirac-Born-Infeld theory. We find that, for regular boundary conditions at the position of the particle, some multipoles have vanishing response for a lacunar series of the multipole order $\ell$ for any dimension. Some multipoles also exhibit a logarithmic running when the number of spatial dimensions is even. We construct a ladder operator structure, with its associated ladder symmetries, formed by two sets of ladders that are related to the properties of the linear response and the existence of conserved charges. Our results exhibit a remarkable resemblance with the Love numbers properties of black holes in General Relativity, although some intriguing differences subsist.

Pathological Character of Modifications to Coincident General Relativity: Cosmological Strong Coupling and Ghosts in $f(\Q)$ Theories

The intrinsic presence of ghosts in the symmetric teleparallel framework is elucidated. We illustrate our general arguments in $f(\mathbb{Q})$ theories by studying perturbations in the three inequivalent spatially flat cosmologies. Two of these branches exhibit reduced linear spectra, signalling they are infinitely strongly coupled. For the remaining branch we unveil the presence of seven gravitational degrees of freedom and show that at least one of them is a ghost. Our results rule out $f(\mathbb{Q})$ cosmologies and clarify the number of propagating degrees of freedom in these theories.

On the (non-)degeneracy of massive neutrinos and elastic interactions in the dark sector

Cosmological models featuring an elastic interaction in the dark sector at linear order has been shown to provide a promising scenario for alleviating the $σ_8$ tension. A natural question for these scenarios is whether there could be a degeneracy between the interaction and massive neutrinos that also contribute to erasing structures at late times. In this work we investigate the presence of such a degeneracy and show that the two effects do not exhibit strong correlations.
