Cosmological Constant and Local Gravity

We discuss the linearization of Einstein equations in the presence of a cosmological constant, by expanding the solution for the metric around a flat Minkowski space-time. We demonstrate that one can find consistent solutions to the linearized set of equations for the metric perturbations, in the Lorentz gauge, which are not spherically symmetric, but they rather exhibit a cylindrical symmetry. We find that the components of the gravitational field satisfying the appropriate Poisson equations have the property of ensuring that a scalar potential can be constructed, in which both contributions, from ordinary matter and $Λ> 0$, are attractive. In addition, there is a novel tensor potential, induced by the pressure density, in which the effect of the cosmological constant is repulsive. We also linearize the Schwarzschild-de Sitter exact solution of Einstein's equations (due to a generalization of Birkhoff's theorem) in the domain between the two horizons. We manage to transform it first to a gauge in which the 3-space metric is conformally flat and, then, make an additional coordinate transformation leading to the Lorentz gauge conditions. We compare our non-spherically symmetric solution with the linearized Schwarzschild-de Sitter metric, when the latter is transformed to the Lorentz gauge, and we find agreement. The resulting metric, however, does not acquire a proper Newtonian form in terms of the unique scalar potential that solves the corresponding Poisson equation. Nevertheless, our solution is stable, in the sense that the physical energy density is positive.

CP Violation in Neutrino Oscillations without Antineutrinos: Energy Dependence

The next generation of long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments will aim at determining the unknown mixing angle $θ_{13}$, the type of neutrino mass hierarchy and CP-violation. We discuss the separation of these properties by means of the energy dependence of the oscillation probability and we consider an hybrid setup which combines the electron capture and the $β^+$ decay from the same radioactive ion with the same boost. We study the sensitivity to the mixing angle and the CP-phase, the CP discovery potential and the reach to determine the type of neutrino mass hierarchy. The analysis is performed for different boosts and baselines. We conclude that the combination of the two decay channels, with different neutrino energies, achieves remarkable results.

Obtaining sigma --> gamma gamma Width from Nucleon Polarizabilities

We propose a new method that fixes the coupling to two photons of the recently found lightest QCD resonance, the sigma. This coupling provides crucial information for discriminating the yet unknown nature of this special state. Our method uses available data on the nucleon polarizabilities together with analyticity and unitarity. Taking into account all the uncertainties, our result is Gamma_{pole}= 1.2 +- 0.4 keV.

The sigma -> gamma gamma Width from Nucleon Electromagnetic Polarizabilities

The lightest QCD resonance, the sigma, has been recently fixed in the pi-pi scattering amplitude. The nature of this state remains nowadays one of the most intriguing and difficult issues in particle physics. Its coupling to photons is crucial to discriminate its structure. We propose a new method that fixes this coupling using only available precise experimental data on the proton electromagnetic polarizabilities together with analyticity and unitarity. Taking into account the uncertainties in the analysis and in the parameter values, our result is Gamma_{pole}(sigma -> gamma gamma) = (1.2 +- 0.4) KeV.

The Capabilities of Monochromatic EC Neutrino Beams with the SPS Upgrade

The goal for future neutrino facilities is the determination of the U(e3) mixing and CP violation in neutrino oscillations. This will require precision experiments with a very intense neutrino source and energy control. With this objective in mind, the creation of monochromatic neutrino beams from the electron capture decay of boosted ions by the SPS of CERN has been proposed. We discuss the capabilities of such a facility as a function of the energy of the boost and the baseline for the detector. We conclude that the SPS upgrade to 1000 GeV is crucial to reach a better sensitivity to CP violation iff it is accompanied by a longer baseline. We compare the physics potential for two different configurations: I) $γ=90$ and $γ=195$ (maximum achievable at present SPS) to Frejus; II) $γ=195$ and $γ=440$ (maximum achievable at upgraded SPS) to Canfranc. The main conclusion is that, whereas the gain in the determination of U(e3) is rather modest, setup II provides much better sensitivity to CP violation.

CPT and Quantum Mechanics Tests with Kaons

In this review we first discuss the theoretical motivations for possible CPT violation and deviations from ordinary quantum-mechanical behavior of field-theoretic systems in the context of an extended class of quantum-gravity models. Then we proceed to a description of precision tests of CPT symmetry using mainly neutral kaons. We emphasize the possibly unique role of neutral meson factories in providing specific tests of models where the quantum-mechanical CPT operator is not well-defined, leading to modifications of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen particle correlators. Finally, we present tests of CPT, T, and CP using charged kaons, and in particular K_l4 decays, which are interesting due to the high statistics attainable in experiments.

A Monochromatic Neutrino Beam for U(e3) and CP-Phase

The goal for future neutrino facilities is the determination of the $[U_{e3}]$ mixing and CP violation in neutrino oscillations. This will require precision experiments with a very intense neutrino source. Here a novel method to create a monochromatic neutrino beam based on the recent discovery of nuclei that decay fast through electron capture is discussed. The boost of such radioactive ions will generate a monochromatic directional neutrino beam when decaying at high energy in a storage ring with long straight sections. We show that the capacity of such a facility to discover new physics is impressive, so that the principle of energy dependence in the oscillation probability of the $ν_e \to ν_μ$ channel is operational to separate out the two parameters of the mixing $θ_{13}$ and of the CP-violating phase $δ$.

The Demise of Flavour Tagging and its Delta-T Dependence

In this work we discuss how the loss of particle-antiparticle identity due to CPT violation affects the observables in the decay of two neutral EPR-correlated $B$-mesons. We study this possible new effect in the context of equal-sign flavour specific decays and we find a considerable modification in the $Δt$-dependence of the equal-sign dilepton charge asymmetry, $A_{sl}$. Although the more important changes occur right outside the $\Dt$ region that has been up-to-the-date effectively explored, we show that a deeper experimental research may be able to distinguish a possible existence of this new CPT violating parameter, $\w$. In any case, using the available data for $A_{sl}$, we put the first limits on $\w$.

Neutrino-Nuclear Coherent Scattering and the Effective Neutrino Charge Radius

We propose to extract the value of the effective neutrino charge radius from the coherent scattering of a neutrino against a heavy nucleus. In such an experiment the relevant quantity to measure is the kinetic energy distribution of the recoiling nucleus, which, in turn, may be directly related to the shift in the value of the effective weak mixing angle produced by the neutrino charge radius. This type of experiment has been proposed in order to observe the coherent elastic neutrino-nuclear scattering for the first time. If interpreted in the way suggested in this work, such an experiment would constitute the first terrestrial attempt to measure this intrinsic electromagnetic property of the neutrino.

Atmospheric neutrinos and nu-mass hierarchy

We discuss the possibility for matter effects in the three-neutrino oscillations of the atmospheric nu_e (bar{nu}_e) and nu_mu (bar{nu}_mu), driven by one neutrino mass squared difference, |Delta m2_{31}| >> Delta m2_{21}, to be observable under appropriate conditions. We derive predictions for the Nadir angle (theta_n) dependence of the ratio N_mu/N_e of the rates of the mu-like and e-like multi-GeV events which is particularly sensitive to the Earth matter effects in the atmospheric neutrino oscillations, and thus to the values of sin2{theta_{13}} and sin2{theta_{23}}, and also to the type of neutrino mass spectrum.

An Appearance-Like Reactor Experiment To Measure Ue3

Conventional reactor neutrino experiments are dissapearance experiments, and thus have less sensitivity to small mixing angles than appearance experiments do. It has been recently shown that future reactor neutrino experiments consisiting of a near and far detector are competitive with first-generation superbeams in order to determine sin^2{2 theta_{13}} down to 10^{-2}. We show that by using the antineutrino-electron elastic scattering at the near detector around the configuration where dsigma^{barν_e}/dT presents a dynamical zero, an appearance-like experiment can be simulated, with a sensitivity comparable to the one achieved with the inverse beta-decay reaction in the far detector. Thus, the near detector could also be used to look for oscillations. We present how antineutrino-electron elastic scattering could be properly used for this purpose allowing that the combination of the measurements in the far detector and in the near detector would push the sensitivity of the experiment to a lower value of theta_{13}.

New Physics in CP-Violating Observables for Beauty

After the present establishment of CP-Violation in $B_{d}$-physics, consistency tests of unitarity in the Standard Model and the search of new phenomena are compulsory. I illustrate the way to look for T-violation, without contamination of absorptive parts, in correlated decays in B-factories. $B_{s}$-mixing and penguin-mediated $B_{s}$-decays are of prime importance in hadronic machines to look for new physics.
