Equilibrium states for hyperbolic potentials via inducing schemes

In a context of non-uniformly expanding maps, possibly with the presence of a critical set, we prove the existence of finitely many ergodic equilibrium states for hyperbolic potentials. Moreover, the equilibrium states are expanding measures. This generalizes a result due to Ramos and Viana, where analytical methods are used for maps with no critical sets. The strategy here consists in using a finite number of inducing schemes with a Markov structure in infinitely many symbols to code the dynamics, to obtain an equilibrium state for the associated symbolic dynamics and then projecting it to obtain an equilibrium state for the original map. We apply our results to the important class of multidimensional Viana maps.

Statistical stability of interval maps with critical points and singularities

We prove strong statistical stability of a large class of one-dimensional maps which may have an arbitrary finite number of discontinuities and of non-degenerate critical points and/or singular points with infinite derivative, and satisfy some expansivity and bounded recurrence conditions. This generalizes known results for maps with critical points and bounded derivatives and in particular proves statistical stability of Lorenz-like maps with critical points and singularities studied in [S. Luzzatto and W. Tucker. Non-uniformly expanding dynamics in maps with singularities and criticalities. Inst. Hautes Etudes Sci. Publ. Math., (89):179-226, 1999]. We introduce a natural metric on the space of maps with discontinuities which does not seem to have been used in the literature before.

Almost sure rates of mixing for partially hyperbolic attractors

We introduce random towers to study almost sure rates of correlation decay for random partially hyperbolic attractors. Using this framework, we obtain abstract results on almost sure exponential, stretched exponential and polynomial correlation decay rates. We then apply our results to small random perturbations of Axiom A attractors, small perturbations of derived from Anosov partially hyperbolic systems and to solenoidal attractors with random intermittency.

Entropy formula for systems with inducing schemes

We obtain entropy formulas for SRB measures with finite entropy given by inducing schemes. In the first part of the work, we obtain Pesin entropy formula for the class of noninvertible systems whose SRB measures are given by Gibbs-Markov induced maps. In the second part, we obtain Pesin entropy formula for invertible maps whose SRB measures given by Young sets, taking into account a classical compression technique along the stable direction that allows a reduction of the return map associated with a Young set to a Gibbs-Markov map. In both cases, we give applications of our main results to several classes of dynamical systems with singular sets, where the classical results by Ruelle and Pesin cannot be applied. We also present examples of systems with SRB measures given by inducing schemes for which Ruelle inequality does not hold.

Statistical instability for contracting Lorenz flows

We consider one parameter families of vector fields introduced by Rovella, obtained through modifying the eigenvalues of the geometric Lorenz attractor, replacing the expanding condition on the eigenvalues of the singularity by a contracting one. We show that there is no statistical stability within the set of parameters for which there is a physical measure supported on the attractor. This is achieved obtaining a similar conclusion at the level of the corresponding one-dimensional contracting Lorenz maps.

On the liftability of expanding stationary measures

We consider random perturbations of a topologically transitive local diffeomorphism of a Riemannian manifold. We show that if an absolutely continuous ergodic stationary measures is expanding (all Lyapunov exponents positive), then there is a random Gibbs-Markov-Young structure which can be used to lift that measure. We also prove that if the original map admits a finite number of expanding invariant measures then the stationary measures of a sufficiently small stochastic perturbation are expanding.

Entropy formula and continuity of entropy for piecewise expanding maps

We consider some classes of piecewise expanding maps in finite dimensional spaces having invariant probability measures which are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. We derive an entropy formula for such measures and, using this entropy formula, in some parametrized families we present sufficient conditions for the continuity of that entropy with respect to the parameter. We apply our results to a classical one-dimensional family of tent maps and a family of two-dimensional maps which arises as the limit of return maps when a homoclinic tangency is unfolded by a family of three dimensional diffeomorphisms.

Equilibrium stability for non-uniformly hyperbolic systems

We prove that for a wide family of non-uniformly hyperbolic maps and hyperbolic potentials we have equilibrium stability, i.e. the equilibrium states depend continuously on the dynamics and the potential. For this we deduce that the topological pressure is continuous as a function of the dynamics and the potential. We also prove the existence of finitely many ergodic equilibrium states for non-uniformly hyperbolic skew products and hyperbolic Hölder continuous potentials. Finally we show that these equilibrium states vary continuously in the weak$^\ast$ topology within such systems.

Gibbs-Markov-Young structures with (stretched) exponential tail for partially hyperbolic attractors

We study partially hyperbolic sets $K$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$ whose tangent space splits as $T_K M=E^{cu}\oplus E^{s}$, for which the center-unstable direction $E^{cu}$ is non-uniformly expanding on some local unstable disk. We prove that the (stretched) exponential decay of recurrence times for an induced scheme can be deduced under the assumption of (stretched) exponential decay of the time that typical points need to achieve some uniform expanding in the center-unstable direction. This extends a result by Alves and Pinheiro to the (stretched) exponential case. As an application of our main result we obtain (stretched) exponential decay of correlations and exponentially large deviations for a class of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms introduced by Alves, Bonatti and Viana.

SRB measures for partially hyperbolic systems whose central direction is weakly expanding

We consider partially hyperbolic \( C^{1+} \) diffeomorphisms of compact Riemannian manifolds of arbitrary dimension which admit a partially hyperbolic tangent bundle decomposition \( E^s\oplus E^{cu} \). Assuming the existence of a set of positive Lebesgue measure on which \( f \) satisfies a weak nonuniform expansivity assumption in the centre~unstable direction, we prove that there exists at most a finite number of transitive attractors each of which supports an SRB measure. As part of our argument, we prove that each attractor admits a Gibbs-Markov-Young geometric structure with integrable return times. We also characterize in this setting SRB measures which are liftable to Gibbs-Markov-Young structures.

Equilibrium states for impulsive semiflows

We consider impulsive semiflows defined on compact metric spaces and give sufficient conditions, both on the semiflows and the potentials, for the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states. We also generalize the classical notion of topological pressure to our setting of discontinuous semiflows and prove a variational principle.

A variational principle for impulsive semiflows

We consider impulsive semiflows defined on compact metric spaces and deduce a variational principle. In particular, we generalize the classical notion of topological entropy to our setting of discontinuous semiflows.

Statistical stability for multidimensional piecewise expanding maps

We present sufficient conditions for the (strong) statistical stability of some classes of multidimensional piecewise expanding maps. As a consequence we get that a certain natural two-dimensional extension of the classical one-dimensional family of tent maps is statistically stable.

Invariant probability measures and non-wandering sets for impulsive semiflows

We consider impulsive dynamical systems defined on compact metric spaces and their respective impulsive semiflows. We establish sufficient conditions for the existence of probability measures which are invariant by such impulsive semiflows. We also deduce the forward invariance of their non-wandering sets except the discontinuity points.

Statistical stability of Geometric Lorenz attractors

We consider the robust family of Geometric Lorenz attractors. These attractors are chaotic in the sense that they are transitive and have sensitive dependence on the initial conditions. Moreover, they support SRB measures whose ergodic basins cover a full Lebesgue measure subset of points in the topological basin of attraction. Here we prove that the SRB measures depend continuously on the dynamics in the weak$^*$ topology.

Statistical properties of diffeomorfisms with weak invariant manifolds

We consider diffeomorphisms of compact Riemmanian manifolds which have a Gibbs-Markov-Young structures, consisting of a reference set $Λ$ with a hyperbolic product structure and a countable Markov partition. We assume polynomial contraction on stable leaves, polynomial backward contraction on unstable leaves, a bounded distortion property and a certain regularity of the stable foliation. We establish a control on the decay of correlations and large deviations of the SRB measure of the dynamical system, based on a polynomial control on the Lebesgue measure of the tail of return times. Finally, we present an example of a dynamical system defined on the torus and prove that it verifies the properties of the Gibbs-Markov-Young structure that we considered.

Geometry of expanding absolutely continuous invariant measures and the liftability problem

We show that for a large class of maps on manifolds of arbitrary finite dimension, the existence of a Gibbs-Markov-Young structure (with Lebesgue as the reference measure) is a necessary as well as sufficient condition for the existence of an invariant probability measure which is absolutely continuous measure (with respect to Lebesgue) and for which all Lyapunov exponents are positive.
