Factoring polynomials over function fields

If K/k is a function field in one variable of positive characteristic, we describe a general algorithm to factor one-variable polynomials with coefficients in K. The algorithm is flexible enough to find factors subject to additional restrictions, e.g., to find all roots that belong to a given finite dimensional k-subspace of K more efficiently. It also provides a deterministic polynomial time irreducibility test in small characteristic. We also discuss some applications.

Galois invariants of finite abelian descent and Brauer sets

For a variety over a global field, one can consider subsets of the set of adelic points of the variety cut out by finite abelian descent or Brauer-Manin obstructions. Given a Galois extension of the ground field one can consider similar sets over the extension and take Galois invariants. In this paper, we study under which circumstances the Galois invariants recover the obstruction sets over the ground field. As an application of our results, we study finite abelian descent and Brauer-Manin obstructions for isotrivial curves over function fields and extend results obtained by the first and last authors for constant curves to the isotrivial case.

Etale descent obstruction and anabelian geometry of curves over finite fields

Let $C$ and $D$ be smooth, proper and geometrically integral curves over a finite field $F$. Any morphism from $D$ to $C$ induces a morphism of their \'etale fundamental groups. The anabelian philosophy proposed by Grothendieck suggests that, when $C$ has genus at least $2$, all open homomorphisms between the \'etale fundamental groups should arise in this way from a nonconstant morphism of curves. We relate this expectation to the arithmetic of the curve $C_K$ over the global function field $K = F(D)$. Specifically, we show that there is a bijection between the set of conjugacy classes of well-behaved morphism of fundamental groups and locally constant adelic points of $C_K$ that survive \'etale descent. We use this to provide further evidence for the anabelian conjecture by relating it to another recent conjecture by Sutherland and the second author.

Binomial exponential sums

We obtain new bounds of exponential sums modulo a prime $p$ with binomials $ax^k + bx^n$. In particular, for $k=1$, we improve the bound of Karatsuba (1967) from $O(n^{1/4} p^{3/4})$ to $O\left(p^{3/4} + n^{1/3}p^{2/3}\right)$ for any $n$, and then use it to improve the bound of Akulinichev (1965) from $O(p^{5/6})$ to $O(p^{4/5})$ for $n | (p-1)$. The result is based on a new bound on the number of solutions and of degrees of irreducible components of certain equations over finite fields.

Value sets of sparse polynomials

We obtain a new lower bound on the size of value set f(F_p) of a sparse polynomial f in F_p[X] over a finite field of p elements when p is prime. This bound is uniform with respect of the degree and depends on some natural arithmetic properties of the degrees of the monomial terms of f and the number of these terms. Our result is stronger than those which canted be extracted from the bounds on multiplicities of individual values in f(F_p).

Maximal differential uniformity polynomials

We provide an explicit infinite family of integers $m$ such that all the polynomials of ${\mathbb F}_{2^n}[x]$ of degree $m$ have maximal differential uniformity for $n$ large enough. We also prove a conjecture of the third author in these cases.

Maps between curves and arithmetic obstructions

Let X and Y be curves over a finite field. In this article we explore methods to determine whether there is a rational map from Y to X by considering L-functions of certain covers of X and Y and propose a specific family of covers to address the special case of determining when X and Y are isomorphic. We also discuss an application to factoring polynomials over finite fields.

Evidence for the Dynamical Brauer-Manin Criterion

Let f:X->X be a morphism of a variety over a number field K. We consider local conditions and a "Bruaer-Manin" condition, defined by Hsia and Silverman, for the orbit of a point P in X(K) to be disjoint from a subvariety V of X, i.e., the intersection of the orbit of P with V is empty. We provide evidence that the dynamical Brauer-Manin condition is sufficient to explain the lack of points in the intersection of the orbit of P with V; this evidence stems from a probabilistic argument as well as unconditional results in the case of etale maps.

Rational points on some Fermat curves and surfaces over finite fields

We give an explicit description of the F_{q^i}-rational points on the Fermat curve u^{q-1}+v^{q-1}+w^{q-1}=0 for each i=1,2,3. As a consequence, we observe that for any such point (u,v,w), the product uvw is a cube in F_{q^i}. We also describe the F_{q^2}-rational points on the Fermat surface u^{q-1}+v^{q-1}+w^{q-1}+x^{q-1}=0, and show that the product of the coordinates of any such points is a square.

Multiplicative Order of Gauss Periods

We obtain a lower bound on the multiplicative order of Gauss periods which generate normal bases over finite fields. This bound improves the previous bound of J. von zur Gathen and I. E. Shparlinski.

The Brauer-Manin obstruction for subvarieties of abelian varieties over function fields

We prove that for a large class of subvarieties of abelian varieties over global function fields, the Brauer-Manin condition on adelic points cuts out exactly the rational points. This result is obtained from more general results concerning the intersection of the adelic points of a subvariety with the adelic closure of the group of rational points of the abelian variety.

Weights in Codes and Genus 2 Curves

We discuss a class of binary cyclic codes and their dual codes. The minimum distance is determined using algebraic geometry, and an application of Weil's theorem. We relate the weights appearing in the dual codes to the number of rational points on a family of genus 2 curves over a finite field.
