"Waveforms" at the Horizon

We study perturbations induced by a light particle scattering off a Schwarzschild black hole. Exploiting recent results for the wave propagation in this geometry, we derive the fields that this process induces on the horizon to leading order in the post-Minkowskian (PM) regime, when the light probe is far from the black hole. We then use these results to calculate the fluxes of energy and angular momentum that enter the black hole. We consider the effects due to gravitational, electromagnetic and scalar radiation, finding agreement with recent computations of the absorbed energy, while the absorbed angular momentum provides a new PM result.

Gravitational wave forms for extreme mass ratio collisions from supersymmetric gauge theories

We study the wave form emitted by a particle moving along an arbitrary (in general open) geodesic of the Schwarzschild geometry. The mathematical problem can be phrased in terms of quantities in ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories that can be calculated by using localization and the AGT correspondence. In particular through this mapping, the post-Newtonian expansion of the wave form is expressed as a double instanton sum with rational coefficients that resums all tail contributions into Gamma functions and exponentials. The formulae we obtain are valid for generic values of the orbital quantum numbers $\ell$ and $m$. For $\ell=2,3$ we check explicitly that our results agree with the small mass ratio limit of the wave forms derived in the Multipole Post-Minkowskian and the amplitudes approaches. We show how the so-called tail and tail of tail contributions to the wave form arise in our approach. Finally, we derive a universal formula for the soft limit of the wave form that resums all logarithmic divergent terms of the form $ω^{n-1} (\log ω)^n$.

Gauge theory meets cosmology

We reconsider linear perturbations around general Friedmann - Lemaitre - Robertson - Walker (FLRW) cosmological backgrounds. Exploiting gauge freedom involving only time reparametrizations, we write down classical background solutions analytically, for an arbitrary number of fluid components. We then show that the time evolution of scalar and tensor adiabatic perturbations are governed by Schrödinger-like differential equations of generalized Heun type. After recovering known analytic results for a single-component fluid, we discuss more general situations with two and three different fluid components, with special attention to the combination of radiation, matter and vacuum energy, which is supposed to describe the $Λ$CDM model. The evolution of linear perturbations of a flat $Λ$CDM universe is described by a two-transient model, where the transitions from radiation to matter and matter to vacuum energy are governed by a Heun equation and a Hypergeometric equation, respectively. We discuss an analytic approach to the study of the general case, involving generalized Heun equations, that makes use of (quantum) Seiberg-Witten curves for ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories and has proven to be very effective in the analysis of Black-Hole, fuzzball and ECO perturbations.

Non-spinning tops are stable

We consider coupled gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations of a family of five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell solutions that describes both magnetized black strings and horizonless topological stars. We find that the odd perturbations of this background lead to a master equation with five Fuchsian singularities and compute its quasinormal mode spectrum using three independent methods: Leaver, WKB and numerical integration. Our analysis confirms that odd perturbations always decay in time, while spherically symmetric even perturbations may exhibit for certain ranges of the magnetic fluxes instabilities of Gregory-Laflamme type for black strings and of Gross-Perry-Yaffe type for topological stars. This constitutes evidence that topological stars and black strings are classically stable in a finite domain of their parameter space.

Post Newtonian emission of gravitational waves from binary systems: a gauge theory perspective

We derive a gauge inspired combinatorial formula based on localization for the Post-Newtonian expansion of the gravitational wave form luminosity of binary systems made of objects with very different masses orbiting at large distances and small velocities. The results are tested against previous formulae in the literature for Schwarschild and Kerr black holes at the 5th and 3rd Post Newtonian order respectively beyond the quadrupole approximation. Tidal effects show up in the wave form at the 5th PN order, providing a quantitative measure of the blackness/compactness properties of the heavy object.

Tidal resonances for fuzzballs

We study the gravitational tidal response of D1D5, Top Star and (1,0,n) strata horizonless geometries. We find that the tidal interactions in fuzzball geometries, unlike in the case of black holes, exhibits a sequence of resonant peaks associated to the existence of metastable bound states. The spectrum of resonant frequencies is computed by semi-analytical and numerical methods.

On the stability and deformability of top stars

Topological stars, or top stars for brevity, are smooth horizonless static solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory in 5-d that reduce to spherically symmetric solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory in 4-d. We study linear scalar perturbations of top stars and argue for their stability and deformability. We tackle the problem with different techniques including WKB approximation, numerical analysis, Breit-Wigner resonance method and quantum Seiberg-Witten curves. We identify three classes of quasi-normal modes corresponding to prompt-ring down modes, long-lived meta-stable modes and what we dub `blind' modes. All mode frequencies we find have negative imaginary parts, thus suggesting linear stability of top stars. Moreover we determine the tidal Love and dissipation numbers encoding the response to tidal deformations and, similarly to black holes, we find zero value in the static limit but, contrary to black holes, we find non-trivial dynamical Love numbers and vanishing dissipative effects at linear order. For the sake of illustration in a simpler context, we also consider a toy model with a piece-wise constant potential and a centrifugal barrier that captures most of the above features in a qualitative fashion.

On irregular states and Argyres-Douglas theories

Conformal theories of the Argyres-Douglas type are notoriously hard to study given that they are isolated and strongly coupled thus lacking a lagrangian description. In flat space, an exact description is provided by the Seiberg-Witten theory. Turning on a $Ω$-background makes the geometry ``quantum" and tractable only in the weak curvature limit. In this paper we use the AGT correspondence to derive $Ω$-exact formulae for the partition function, in the nearby of monopole points where the dynamics is described by irregular conformal blocks of the CFT. The results are checked against those obtained by the recursion relations coming from a conformal anomaly in the region where the two approaches overlap. The Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit is also discussed. Finally, we comment on the existence of black holes in De Sitter space whose low energy dynamics is described by an Argyres-Douglas theory.

Partition functions of non-Lagrangian theories from the holomorphic anomaly

The computation of the partition function in certain quantum field theories, such as those of the Argyres-Douglas or Minahan-Nemeschansky type, is problematic due to the lack of a Lagrangian description. In this paper, we use the holomorphic anomaly equation to derive the gravitational corrections to the prepotential of such theories at rank one by deforming them from the conformal point. In the conformal limit, we find a general formula for the partition function as a sum of hypergeometric functions. We show explicit results for the round sphere and the Nekrasov-Shatashvili phases of the $Ω$ background. The first case is relevant for the derivation of extremal correlators in flat space, whereas the second one has interesting applications for the study of anharmonic oscillators.

CFT description of BH's and ECO's: QNMs, superradiance, echoes and tidal responses

Using conformal field theory and localization tecniques we study the propagation of waves in gravity backgrounds described by Schrödinger like equations with Fuchsian singularities. Exact formulae for the connection matrices relating the asymptotic behaviour of the wave functions near the singularities are obtained in terms of braiding and fusion rules of the CFT. The results are applied to the study of quasi normal modes, absorption cross sections, amplification factors, echoes and tidal responses of black holes (BH) and exotic compact objects (ECO) in four and five dimensions. In particular, we propose a definition of dynamical Love numbers in gravity.

More on the SW-QNM correspondence

We exploit the recently proposed correspondence between gravitational perturbations and quantum Seiberg-Witten curves to compute the spectrum of quasi-normal modes of asymptotically flat Kerr Newman black holes and establish detailed gauge/gravity dictionaries for a large class of black holes, D-branes and fuzzballs in diverse dimensions. QNM frequencies obtained from the quantum periods of $SU(2)$ ${\cal N}=2$ SYM with $N_f=3$ flavours are compared against numerical results, WKB (eikonal) approximation and geodetic motion showing remarkable agreement. Starting from the master example relating quasi-normal modes of Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_4$ to $SU(2)$ gauge theory with $N_f=4$, we illustrate the procedure for some simple toy-models that allow analytic solutions. We also argue that the AGT version of the gauge/gravity correspondence may give precious hints as to the physical/geometric origin of the quasi-normal modes/Seiberg-Witten connection and further elucidate interesting properties (such as tidal Love numbers and grey-body factors) that can help discriminating black holes from fuzzballs.

Gauge theories on compact toric manifolds

We compute the ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric partition function of a gauge theory on a four-dimensional compact toric manifold via equivariant localization. The result is given by a piecewise constant function of the Kähler form with jumps along the walls where the gauge symmetry gets enhanced. The partition function on such manifolds is written as a sum over the residues of a product of partition functions on $\mathbb{C}^2$. The evaluation of these residues is greatly simplified by using an "abstruse duality" that relates the residues at the poles of the one-loop and instanton parts of the $\mathbb{C}^2$ partition function. As particular cases, our formulae compute the $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ {\it equivariant} Donaldson invariants of $\mathbb{P}^2$ and $\mathbb{F}_n$ and in the non-equivariant limit reproduce the results obtained via wall-crossing and blow up methods in the $SU(2)$ case. Finally, we show that the $U(1)$ self-dual connections induce an anomalous dependence on the gauge coupling, which turns out to satisfy a $\mathcal{N}=2$ analog of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ holomorphic anomaly equations.

Light rings of five-dimensional geometries

We study massless geodesics near the photon-spheres of a large family of solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory in five dimensions, including BHs, naked singularities and smooth horizon-less JMaRT geometries obtained as six-dimensional uplifts of the five-dimensional solution. We find that a light ring of unstable photon orbits surrounding the mass center is always present, independently of the existence of a horizon or singularity. We compute the Lyapunov exponent, characterizing the chaotic behaviour of geodesics near the `photon-sphere' and the time decay of ring-down modes dominating the response of the geometry to perturbations at late times. We show that, for geometries free of naked singularities, the Lyapunov exponent is always bounded by its value for a Schwarzschild BH of the same mass.

The multipolar structure of fuzzballs

We extend and refine a general method to extract the multipole moments of arbitrary stationary spacetimes and apply it to the study of a large family of regular horizonless solutions to $ {\cal N}{\,=\,}2$ four-dimensional supergravity coupled to four Abelian gauge fields. These microstate geometries can carry angular momentum and have a much richer multipolar structure than the Kerr black hole. In particular they break the axial and equatorial symmetry, giving rise to a large number of nontrivial multipole moments. After studying some analytical examples, we explore the four-dimensional parameter space of this family with a statistical analysis. We find that microstate mass and spin multipole moments are typically (but not always) larger that those of a Kerr black hole with the same mass and angular momentum. Furthermore, we find numerical evidence that some invariants associated with the (dimensionless) moments of these microstates grow monotonically with the microstate size and display a global minimum at the black-hole limit, obtained when all centers collide. Our analysis is relevant in the context of measurements of the multipole moments of dark compact objects with electromagnetic and gravitational-wave probes, and for observational tests to distinguish fuzzballs from classical black holes.

Chaos at the rim of black hole and fuzzball shadows

We study the scattering of massless probes in the vicinity of the {\it photon-sphere} of asymptotically AdS black holes and horizon-free microstate geometries (fuzzballs). We find that these exhibit a chaotic behaviour characterised by exponentially large deviations of nearby trajectories. We compute the Lyapunov exponent $λ$ governing the exponential growth in $d$ dimensions and show that it is bounded from above by $λ_b = \sqrt{d{-}3}/2b_{\rm min}$ where $b_{\rm min}$ is the minimal impact parameter under which a massless particle is swallowed by the black hole or gets trapped in the fuzzball for a very long time. Moreover we observe that $λ$ is typically below the advocated bound on chaos $λ_H=2πκ_B T/\hbar$, that in turn characterises the radial fall into the horizon, but the bound is violated in a narrow window near extremality, where the photon-sphere coalesces with the horizon. Finally, we find that fuzzballs are characterised by Lyapunov exponents smaller than those of the corresponding BH's suggesting the possibility of discriminating the existence of micro-structures at horizon scales via the detection of ring-down modes with time scales $λ^{-1}$ longer than those expected for a BH of the given mass and spin.

More on microstate geometries of 4d black holes

We construct explicit examples of microstate geometries of four-dimensional black holes that lift to smooth horizon-free geometries in five dimensions. Solutions consist of half-BPS D-brane atoms distributed in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Charges and positions of the D-brane centers are constrained by the bubble equations and boundary conditions ensuring the regularity of the metric and the match with the black hole geometry. In the case of three centers, we find that the moduli spaces of solutions includes disjoint one-dimensional components of (generically) finite volume.

Instanton corrections to the effective action of N=4 SYM

We compute the one-instanton effective action of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group Sp(2N). The result can be written in a very compact and manifestly supersymmetric form involving an integral over the superspace of an irrational function of the N=4 on-shell superfields. In the Coulomb branch, the instanton corrects both the MHV and next-to-next-MHV higher derivative terms D^4F^{2n+2} and F^{2n+4}. We confirm at the non-perturbative level the non-renormalization theorems for MHV F^{2n+2} terms that are expected to receive perturbative corrections only at n-loops. We compute also the one and two-loop corrections to the D^4F^4 term and show that its completion under SL(2,Z) duality is consistent with the one-instanton results of U(2) gauge group.

Type IIB flux vacua from G-theory II

We find analytic solutions of type IIB supergravity on geometries that locally take the form $\text{Mink}\times M_4\times \mathbb{C}$ with $M_4$ a generalised complex manifold. The solutions involve the metric, the dilaton, NSNS and RR flux potentials (oriented along the $M_4$) parametrised by functions varying only over $\mathbb{C}$. Under this assumption, the supersymmetry equations are solved using the formalism of pure spinors in terms of a finite number of holomorphic functions. Alternatively, the solutions can be viewed as vacua of maximally supersymmetric supergravity in six dimensions with a set of scalar fields varying holomorphically over $\mathbb{C}$. For a class of solutions characterised by up to five holomorphic functions, we outline how the local solutions can be completed to four-dimensional flux vacua of type IIB theory. A detailed study of this global completion for solutions with two holomorphic functions has been carried out in the companion paper [1]. The fluxes of the global solutions are, as in F-theory, entirely codified in the geometry of an auxiliary $K3$ fibration over $\mathbb{CP}^1$. The results provide a geometric construction of fluxes in F-theory.
