Lipschitz free spaces isomorphic to their infinite sums and geometric applications

We find general conditions under which Lipschitz-free spaces over metric spaces are isomorphic to their infinite direct $\ell_1$-sum and exhibit several applications. As examples of such applications we have that Lipschitz-free spaces over balls and spheres of the same finite dimensions are isomorphic, that the Lipschitz-free space over $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is isomorphic to its $\ell_1$-sum, or that the Lipschitz-free space over any snowflake of a doubling metric space is isomorphic to $\ell_1$. Moreover, following new ideas from [E. Bruè, S. Di Marino and F. Stra, Linear Lipschitz and $C^1$ extension operators through random projection, arXiv:1801.07533] we provide an elementary self-contained proof that Lipschitz-free spaces over doubling metric spaces are complemented in Lipschitz-free spaces over their superspaces and they have BAP. Everything, including the results about doubling metric spaces, is explored in the more comprehensive setting of $p$-Banach spaces, which allows us to appreciate the similarities and differences of the theory between the cases $p<1$ and $p=1$.

Structure of the Lipschitz free $p$-spaces $\mathcal{F}_p(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ and $\mathcal{F}_p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ for $0<p\le 1$

Our aim in this article is to contribute to the theory of Lipschitz free $p$-spaces for $0<p\le 1$ over the Euclidean spaces $\mathbb{R}^d$ and $\mathbb{Z}^d$. To that end, on one hand we show that $\mathcal{F}_p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ admits a Schauder basis for every $p\in(0,1]$, thus generalizing the corresponding result for the case $p=1$ achieved in [P. Hájek and E. Pernecká, On Schauder bases in Lipschitz-free spaces, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 416 (2014), no. 2, 629--646] and answering in the positive a question that was raised in [F. Albiac, J. L. Ansorena, M. Cúth, and M. Doucha, Embeddability of lp and bases in Lipschitz free $p$-spaces for $0 < p \le 1$, J. Funct. Anal. 278 (2020), no. 4, 108354, 33]. Explicit formulas for the bases of both $\mathcal{F}_p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ and its isomorphic space $\mathcal{F}_p([0,1]^d)$ are given. On the other hand we show that the well-known fact that $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{Z})$ is isomorphic to $\ell_{1}$ does not extend to the case when $p<1$, that is, $\mathcal{F}_{p}(\mathbb{Z})$ is not isomorphic to $\ell_p$ when $0<p<1$.

Quasi-greedy bases in the spaces $\ell_p$ ($0<p<1$) are democratic

The list of known Banach spaces whose linear geometry determines the (nonlinear) democracy functions of their quasi-greedy bases to the extent that they end up being democratic, reduces to $c_0$, $\ell_2$, and all separable $\mathcal{L}_1$-spaces. Oddly enough, these are the only Banach spaces that, when they have an unconditional basis, it is unique. Our aim in this paper is to study the connection between quasi-greediness and democracy of bases in nonlocally convex spaces. We prove that all quasi-greedy bases in $\ell_p$ for $0<p<1$ (which also has a unique unconditional basis) are democratic with fundamental function of the same order as $(m^{1/p})_{m=1}^\infty$. The methods we develop allow us to obtain even more, namely that the same occurs in any separable $\mathcal{L}_p$-space, $0<p<1$, with the bounded approximation property.

On a 'philosophical' question about Banach envelopes

We show how to construct nonlocally convex quasi-Banach spaces $X$ whose dual separates the points of a dense subspace of $X$ but does not separate the points of $X$. Our examples connect with a question raised by Pietsch [About the Banach envelope of $l_{1,\infty}$, Rev. Mat. Complut. 22 (2009), 209-226] and shed light into the unexplored class of quasi-Banach spaces with nontrivial dual which do not have sufficiently many functionals to separate the points of the space.

On the permutative equivalence of squares of unconditional bases

We prove that if the squares of two unconditional bases are equivalent up to a permutation, then the bases themselves are permutatively equivalent. This settles a twenty year-old question raised by Casazza and Kalton in [Uniqueness of unconditional bases in Banach spaces, Israel J. Math. 103 (1998), 141--175]. Solving this problem provides a new paradigm to study the uniqueness of unconditional basis in the general framework of quasi-Banach spaces. Multiple examples are given to illustrate how to put in practice this theoretical scheme. Among the main applications of this principle we obtain the uniqueness of unconditional basis up to permutation of finite sums of quasi-Banach spaces with this property.

Embeddability of $\ell_{p}$ and bases in Lipschitz free $p$-spaces for $0<p\leq 1$

Our goal in this paper is to continue the study initiated by the authors in [Lipschitz free $p$-spaces for $0<p<1$; arXiv:1811.01265 [math.FA]] of the geometry of the Lipschitz free $p$-spaces over quasimetric spaces for $0<p\le1$, denoted $\mathcal F_{p}(\mathcal M)$. Here we develop new techniques to show that, by analogy with the case $p=1$, the space $\ell_{p}$ embeds isomorphically in $\mathcal F_{p}(\mathcal M)$ for $0<p<1$. Going further we see that despite the fact that, unlike the case $p=1$, this embedding need not be complemented in general, complementability of $\ell_{p}$ in a Lipschitz free $p$-space can still be attained by imposing certain natural restrictions to $\mathcal M$. As a by-product of our discussion on basis in $\mathcal F_{p}([0,1])$, we obtain the first-known examples of $p$-Banach spaces for $p<1$ that possess a basis but fail to have an unconditional basis.

Projections and unconditional bases in direct sums of $\ell_p$ spaces, $0<p\le \infty$

We show that every unconditional basis in a finite direct sum $\bigoplus_{p\in A} \ell_p$, with $A\subset (0,\infty]$, splits into unconditional bases of each summand. This settles a 40 year old question raised in [A. Ortyński, Unconditional bases in $\ell_{p}\oplus\ell_{q},$ $0<p<q<1$, Math. Nachr. 103 (1981), 109-116]. As an application we obtain that for any $A\subset (0,1]$ finite, the spaces $Z=\bigoplus_{p\in A} \ell_p$, $Z\oplus \ell_{2}$, and $Z\oplus c_{0}$ have a unique unconditional basis up to permutation.

Lipschitz free $p$-spaces for $0<p<1$

This paper initiates the study of the structure of a new class of $p$-Banach spaces, $0<p<1$, namely the Lipschitz free $p$-spaces (alternatively called Arens-Eells $p$-spaces) $\mathcal{F}_{p}(\mathcal{M})$ over $p$-metric spaces. We systematically develop the theory and show that some results hold as in the case of $p=1$, while some new interesting phenomena appear in the case $0<p<1$ which have no analogue in the classical setting. For the former, we, e.g., show that the Lipschitz free $p$-space over a separable ultrametric space is isomorphic to $\ell_{p}$ for all $0<p\le 1$, or that $\ell_p$ isomorphically embeds into $\mathcal{F}_p(\mathcal{M})$ for any $p$-metric space $\mathcal{M}$. On the other hand, solving a problem by the first author and N. Kalton, there are metric spaces $\mathcal{N}\subset \mathcal{M}$ such that the natural embedding from $\mathcal{F}_p(\mathcal{N})$ to $\mathcal{F}_p(\mathcal{M})$ is not an isometry.

Greedy approximation for biorthogonal systems in quasi-Banach spaces

The general problem addressed in this work is the development of a systematic study of the thresholding greedy algorithm for general biorthogonal systems (also known as Markushevich bases) in quasi-Banach spaces from a functional-analytic point of view. We revisit the concepts of greedy, quasi-greedy, and almost greedy bases in this comprehensive framework and provide the (nontrivial) extensions of the corresponding characterizations of those types of bases. As a by-product of our work, new properties arise, and the relations amongst them are carefully discussed.

Primarity of direct sums of Orlicz spaces and Marcinkiewicz spaces

Let $\mathbb{Y}$ be either an Orlicz sequence space or a Marcinkiewicz sequence space. We take advantage of the recent advances in the theory of factorization of the identity carried on in [R. Lechner, Subsymmetric weak* Schauder bases and factorization of the identity, arXiv:1804.01372 [math.FA]] to provide conditions on $\mathbb{Y}$ that ensure that, for any $1\le p\le\infty$, the infinite direct sum of $\mathbb{Y}$ in the sense of $\ell_p$ is a primary Banach space, enlarging this way the list of Banach spaces that are known to be primary.

Non-superreflexivity of Garling sequence spaces and applications to the existence of special types of conditional bases

In this paper we settle in the negative the problem of the superreflexivity of Garling sequence spaces by showing that they contain a complemented subspace isomorphic to a non superreflexive mixed-norm sequence space. As a by-product of our work, we give applications of this result to the study of conditional Schauder bases and conditional almost greedy bases in this new class of Banach spaces.

Building highly conditional almost greedy and quasi-greedy bases in Banach spaces

It is known that for a conditional quasi-greedy basis $\mathcal{B}$ in a Banach space $\mathbb{X}$, the associated sequence $(k_{m}[\mathcal{B}])_{m=1}^{\infty}$ of its conditionality constants verifies the estimate $k_{m}[\mathcal{B}]=\mathcal{O}(\log m)$ and that if the reverse inequality $\log m =\mathcal{O}(k_m[\mathcal{B}])$ holds then $\mathbb{X}$ is non-superreflexive. Indeed, it is known that a quasi-greedy basis in a superreflexive quasi-Banach space fulfils the estimate $k_{m}[\mathcal{B}]=\mathcal{O}(\log m)^{1-ε}$ for some $ε>0$. However, in the existing literature one finds very few instances of spaces possessing quasi-greedy basis with conditionality constants "as large as possible." Our goal in this article is to fill this gap. To that end we enhance and exploit a technique developed in [S. J. Dilworth, N. J. Kalton, and D. Kutzarova, On the existence of almost greedy bases in Banach spaces, Studia Math. 159 (2003), no. 1, 67-101] and craft a wealth of new examples of both non-superreflexive classical Banach spaces having quasi-greedy bases $\mathcal{B}$ with $k_{m}[\mathcal{B}]=\mathcal{O}(\log m)$ and superreflexive classical Banach spaces having for every $ε>0$ quasi-greedy bases $\mathcal{B}$ with $k_{m}[\mathcal{B}]=\mathcal{O}(\log m)^{1-ε}$. Moreover, in most cases those bases will be almost greedy.

Optimality of the rearrangement inequality with applications to Lorentz-type sequence spaces

We characterize the sequences $(w_i)_{i=1}^\infty$ of non-negative numbers for which \[ \sum_{i=1}^\infty a_i w_i \quad \text{ is of the same order as } \quad \sup_n \sum_{i=1}^n a_i w_{1+n-i} \] when $(a_i)_{i=1}^\infty$ runs over all non-increasing sequences of non-negative numbers. As a by-product of our work we settle a problem raised in [F. Albiac, Jose L. Ansorena and B. Wallis; arXiv:1703.07772[math.FA]] and prove that Garling sequences spaces have no symmetric basis.

We show that a (semi-normalized) basis in a Banach space is quasi-greedy with quasi-greedy constant equal to 1 if and only if it is unconditional with suppression-unconditional constant equal to 1.
