Entropic Locking Of Action Complexity At Cosmological Singularities

We study the relation between entropy and Action Complexity (AC) for various examples of cosmological singularities in General Relativity. The complexity is defined with respect to the causal domain of dependence of the singular set, and the entropy is evaluated on the boundary of the same causal domain. We find that, contrary to the situation for black hole singularities, the complexity growth near the singularity is controlled by the dynamics of the entropy $S$, with a characteristic linear relation. This formula is found to apply to singularities with vanishing entropy as well as those with diverging entropy. In obtaining these results it is crucial to take into account the AC expansion counterterm, whose associated length scale must be chosen sufficiently large in order to ensure the expected monotonicity properties of the complexity.

Terminal Holographic Complexity

We introduce a quasilocal version of holographic complexity adapted to `terminal states' such as spacelike singularities. We use a modification of the action-complexity ansatz, restricted to the past domain of dependence of the terminal set, and study a number of examples whose symmetry permits explicit evaluation, to conclude that this quantity enjoys monotonicity properties after the addition of appropriate counterterms. A notion of `complexity density' can be defined for singularities by a coarse-graining procedure. This definition assigns finite complexity density to black hole singularities but vanishing complexity density to either generic FRW singularities or chaotic BKL singularities. We comment on the similarities and differences with Penrose's Weyl curvature criterion.

Holographic non-computers

We introduce the notion of holographic non-computer as a system which exhibits parametrically large delays in the growth of complexity, as calculated within the Complexity-Action proposal. Some known examples of this behavior include extremal black holes and near-extremal hyperbolic black holes. Generic black holes in higher-dimensional gravity also show non-computing features. Within the $1/d$ expansion of General Relativity, we show that large-$d$ scalings which capture the qualitative features of complexity, such as a linear growth regime and a plateau at exponentially long times, also exhibit an initial computational delay proportional to $d$. While consistent for large AdS black holes, the required `non-computing' scalings are incompatible with thermodynamic stability for Schwarzschild black holes, unless they are tightly caged.

Holographic Complexity And Cosmological Singularities

We study the evolution of holographic complexity in various AdS/CFT models containing cosmological crunch singularities. We find that a notion of complexity measured by extremal bulk volumes tends to decrease as the singularity is approached in CFT time, suggesting that the corresponding quantum states have simpler entanglement structure at the singularity.

Holographic Complexity Of Cold Hyperbolic Black Holes

AdS black holes with hyperbolic horizons provide strong-coupling descriptions of thermal CFT states on hyperboloids. The low-temperature limit of these systems is peculiar. In this note we show that, in addition to a large ground state degeneracy, these states also have an anomalously large holographic complexity, scaling logarithmically with the temperature. We speculate on whether this fact generalizes to other systems whose extreme infrared regime is formally controlled by Conformal Quantum Mechanics, such as various instances of near-extremal charged black holes.

Geometry And Quantum Noise

We study the fine structure of long-time quantum noise in correlation functions of AdS/CFT systems. Under standard assumptions of quantum chaos for the dynamics and the observables, we estimate the size of exponentially small oscillations and trace them back to geometrical features of the bulk system. The noise level is highly suppressed by the amount of dynamical chaos and the amount of quantum impurity in the states. This implies that, despite their missing on the details of Poincare recurrences, `virtual' thermal AdS phases do control the overall noise amplitude even at high temperatures where the thermal ensemble is dominated by large AdS black holes. We also study EPR correlations and find that, in contrast to the behavior of large correlation peaks, their noise level is the same in TFD states and in more general highly entangled states.

Fast Scramblers And Ultrametric Black Hole Horizons

We propose that fast scrambling on finite-entropy stretched horizons can be modeled by a diffusion process on an effective ultrametric geometry. A scrambling time scaling logarithmically with the entropy is obtained when the elementary transition rates saturate causality bounds on the stretched horizon. The so-defined ultrametric diffusion becomes unstable in the infinite-entropy limit. A formally regularized version can be shown to follow a particular case of the Kohlrausch law.

Conformal Complementarity Maps

We study quantum cosmological models for certain classes of bang/crunch singularities, using the duality between expanding bubbles in AdS with a FRW interior cosmology and perturbed CFTs on de Sitter space-time. It is pointed out that horizon complementarity in the AdS bulk geometries is realized as a conformal transformation in the dual deformed CFT. The quantum version of this map is described in full detail in a toy model involving conformal quantum mechanics. In this system the complementarity map acts as an exact duality between eternal and apocalyptic Hamiltonian evolutions. We calculate the commutation relation between the Hamiltonians corresponding to the different frames. It vanishes only on scale invariant states.

Fast Scramblers, Horizons and Expander Graphs

We propose that local quantum systems defined on expander graphs provide a simple microscopic model for thermalization on quantum horizons. Such systems are automatically fast scramblers and are motivated from the membrane paradigm by a conformal transformation to the so-called optical metric.

Chaotic Fast Scrambling At Black Holes

Fast scramblers process information in characteristic times scaling logarithmically with the entropy, a behavior which has been conjectured for black hole horizons. In this note we use the AdS/CFT fold to argue that causality bounds on information flow only depend on the properties of a single thermal cell, and admit a geometrical interpretation in terms of the optical depth, i.e. the thickness of the Rindler region in the so-called optical metric. The spatial sections of the optical metric are well approximated by constant-curvature hyperboloids. We use this fact to propose an effective kinetic model of scrambling which can be assimilated to a compact hyperbolic billiard, furnishing a classic example of hard chaos. It is suggested that classical chaos at large N is a crucial ingredient in reconciling the notion of fast scrambling with the required saturation of causality.

Spontaneous fragmentation of topological black holes

We study the metastability of Anti-de Sitter topological black holes with compact hyperbolic horizons. We focus on the five-dimensional case, an AdS/CFT dual to thermal states in the maximally supersymmetric large-N Yang-Mills theory, quantized on a three-dimensional compact hyperboloid. We estimate the various rates for quantum-statistical D3-brane emission, using WKB methods in the probe-brane approximation, including thermal tunneling and Schwinger pair production. The topological black holes are found to be metastable at high temperature. At low temperatures, D-branes are emitted without exponential suppression in superradiant modes, producing an instability in qualitative agreement with expectations from weakly-coupled gauge dynamics.

Holography of AdS vacuum bubbles

We consider the fate of AdS vacua connected by tunneling events. A precise holographic dual of thin-walled Coleman--de Luccia bounces is proposed in terms of Fubini instantons in an unstable CFT. This proposal is backed by several qualitative and quantitative checks, including the precise calculation of the instanton action appearing in evaluating the decay rate. Big crunches manifest themselves as time dependent processes which reach the boundary of field space in a finite time. The infinite energy difference involved is identified on the boundary and highlights the ill-defined nature of the bulk setup. We propose a qualitative scenario in which the crunch is resolved by stabilizing the CFT, so that all attempts at crunching always end up shielded from the boundary by the formation of black hole horizons. In all these well defined bulk processes the configurations have the same asymptotics and are finite energy excitations.

Ideal gas matching for thermal Galilean holography

We exhibit a nonrelativistic ideal gas with a Kaluza-Klein tower of species, featuring a singular behavior of thermodynamic functions at zero chemical potential. In this way, we provide a qualitative match to the thermodynamics of recently found black holes in backgrounds with asymptotic nonrelativistic conformal symmetry.

On the spectrum of nonrelativistic AdS/CFT

We develop a Hamiltonian picture for a family of models of nonrelativistic AdS/CFT duality. The Schrodinger group is realized via the conformal quantum mechanics of De Alfaro, Fubini and Furlan in the holographic direction. We show that most physical requirements, including the introduction of harmonic traps, can be realized with exact AdS metrics, but without any need for exotic matter sectors in the bulk dynamics. This Hamiltonian picture can be used to compare directly with many-body spectra of fermions at unitarity on harmonic traps, thereby providing a direct physical interpretation of the holographic radial coordinate for these systems. Finally, we add some speculations on the dynamical generation of mass gaps in the AdS description, the resulting quasiparticle spectra, and the analog of `deconfining' phase transitions that may occur.

A note on the extensivity of the holographic entanglement entropy

We consider situations where the renormalized geometric entropy, as defined by the AdS/CFT ansatz of Ryu and Takayanagi, shows extensive behavior in the volume of the entangled region. In general, any holographic geometry that is `capped' in the infrared region is a candidate for extensivity provided the growth of minimal surfaces saturates at the capping region, and the induced metric at the `cap' is non-degenerate. Extensivity is well-known to occur for highly thermalized states. In this note, we show that the holographic ansatz predicts the persistence of the extensivity down to vanishing temperature, for the particular case of conformal field theories in 2+1 dimensions with a magnetic field and/or electric charge condensates.

Holographic entanglement entropy probes (non)locality

We study the short-distance structure of geometric entanglement entropy in certain theories with a built-in scale of nonlocality. In particular we examine the cases of Little String Theory and Noncommutative Yang-Mills theory, using their AdS/CFT descriptions. We compute the entanglement entropy via the holographic ansatz of Ryu and Takayanagi to conclude that the area law is violated at distance scales that sample the nonlocality of these models, being replaced by an extensive volume law. In the case of the noncommutative model, the critical length scale that reveals the area/volume law transition is strongly affected by UV/IR mixing effects. We also present an argument showing that Lorentz symmetry tends to protect the area law for theories with field-theoretical density of states.

Deconstructing the Little Hagedorn Holography

We study aspects of the thermodynamics of Little String Theory, using its geometrical definition in critical ten-dimensional string theory. We find that bulk radiation effects tend to screen the Hagedorn behaviour of the theory, in contrast to the behaviour in the AdS system background. The resulting density of states of the system, when stable, is described by a seven-dimensional nonrelativistic gas. This requires modifications of the holographic Little Hagedorn picture. Using deconstructions we suggest such modifications. The model is embedded into a system which has an ultraviolet fixed point with an AdS description. We investigate the thermodynamical properties of these UV completed models. It is found that the Hagedorn regime survives in a finite band of superheated states that eventually decay into the plasma phase of the conformal field theory that serves as UV regulator. This is manifested in a first-order phase transition that is driven by radiative corrections.

The Holographic Life of the eta'

In the string holographic dual of large-N_c QCD with N_f flavours of Kruczenski et al, the eta' meson is massless at infinite N_c and dual to a collective fluctuation of N_f D6-brane probes in a supergravity background. Here we identify the string diagrams responsible for the generation of a mass of order N_f/N_c, consistent with the Witten-Veneziano formula, and show that the supregravity limit of these diagrams corresponds to mixings with pseudoscalar glueballs. We argue that the dependence on the theta-angle in the supergravity description occurs only through the combination theta + 2 \sqrt{N_f} eta' / f_pi, as dictated by the U(1) anomaly. We provide a quantitative test by computing the linear term in the eta' potential in two independent ways, with perfect agreement.
