Einstein-Maxwell-scalar black holes: the hot, the cold and the bald

The phenomenon of spontaneous scalarisation of charged black holes (BHs) has recently motivated studies of various Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models. Within these models, different classes of BH solutions are possible, depending on the non-minimal coupling function $f(ϕ)$, between the scalar field and the Maxwell invariant. Here we consider the class wherein both the (bald) electrovacuum Reissner-Nordström (RN) BH and new scalarised BHs co-exist, and the former are never unstable against scalar perturbations. In particular we examine the model, within this subclass, with a quartic coupling function: $f(Φ) = 1+αΦ^4$. The domain of existence of the scalarised BHs, for fixed $α$, is composed of two branches. The first branch (cold scalarised BHs) is continuously connected to the extremal RN BH. The second branch (hot scalarised BHs) connects to the first one at the minimum value of the charge to mass ratio and it includes overcharged BHs. We then assess the perturbative stability of the scalarised solutions, focusing on spherical perturbations. On the one hand, cold scalarised BHs are shown to be unstable by explicitly computing growing modes. The instability is quenched at both endpoints of the first branch. On the other hand, hot scalarised BHs are shown to be stable by using the S-deformation method. Thus, in the spherical sector this model possesses two stable BH local ground states (RN and hot scalarised). We point out that the branch structure of BHs in this model parallels the one of BHs in five dimensional vacuum gravity, with [Myer-Perry BHs, fat rings, thin rings] playing the role of [RN, cold scalarised, hot scalarised] BHs.

Dynamically and thermodynamically stable black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity

We consider Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity with the non-minimal exponential coupling between the dilaton and the Maxwell field emerging from low energy heterotic string theory. The dilaton is endowed with a potential that originates from an electromagnetic Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term in $\mathcal{N}=2$ extended supergravity in four spacetime dimensions. For the case we are interested in, this potential introduces a single parameter $α$. When $α\rightarrow 0$, the static black holes (BHs) of the model are the Gibbons-Maeda-Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger (GMGHS) solutions. When $α\rightarrow \infty$, the BHs become the standard Reissner-Nordström (RN) solutions of electrovacuum General Relativity. The BH solutions for finite non-zero $α$ interpolate between these two families. In this case, the dilaton potential regularizes the extremal limit of the GMGHS solution yielding a set of zero temperature BHs with a near horizon $AdS_2\times S^2$ geometry. We show that, in the neighborhood of these extremal solutions, there is a subset of BHs that are dynamically and thermodynamically stable, all of which have charge to mass ratio larger than unity. By dynamical stability we mean that no growing quasi-normal modes are found; thus they are stable against linear perturbations (spherical and non-spherical). Moreover, non-linear numerical evolutions lend support to their non-linear stability. By thermodynamical stability we mean the BHs are stable both in the canonical and grand-canonical ensemble. In particular, both the specific heat at constant charge and the isothermal permittivity are positive. This is not possible for RN and GMGHS BHs. We discuss the different thermodynamical phases for the BHs in this model and comment on what may allow the existence of both dynamically and thermodynamically stable BHs.

Boson and Dirac stars in $D\geq 4$ dimensions

We present a comparative study of spherically symmetric, localized, particle-like solutions for spin $s=0,1/2$ and $1$ gravitating fields in a $D$-dimensional, asymptotically flat spacetime. These fields are massive, possessing a harmonic time dependence and no self-interaction. Special attention is paid to the mathematical similarities and physical differences between the bosonic and fermonic cases. We find that the generic pattern of solutions is similar for any value of the spin $s$, depending only on the dimensionality of spacetime, the cases $D=4,5$ being special.

Axial quasi-normal modes of scalarized neutron stars with massive self-interacting scalar field

We study the axial quasi-normal modes of neutron stars in scalar-tensor theories with massive scalar field including a self-interacting term in the potential. Various realistic equations of state including nuclear, hyperonic and hybrid matter are employed. Although the effect of spontaneous scalarization of neutron stars can be very large, binary pulsar observations and gravitational wave detections significantly constrain the massless scalar-tensor theories. If we consider a properly chosen nonzero mass for the scalar field, though, the scalar-tensor parameters cannot be restricted by the observations, resulting in large deviation from pure general relativity. With this motivation in mind, we extend the universal relations for axial quasi-normal modes known in general relativity to neutron stars in massive scalar-tensor theories with self-interaction using a wide range of realistic EOS. We confirm the universality of the scaled frequency and damping time in terms of the compactness and scaled moment of inertia for neutron stars with and without massive scalarization.

Quasinormal modes of Dirac spinors in the background of rotating black holes in four and five dimensions

We study the quasinormal modes of massive Dirac spinors in the background of rotating black holes. In particular, we consider the Kerr geometry as well as the five dimensional Myers-Perry spacetime with equal angular momenta. We decouple the equations using the standard methods from the literature. In the five dimensional Myers-Perry black hole the angular equation is solved analytically. Using the continued fraction method, we calculate the spectrum of quasinormal modes for the ground modes and first excited modes. We analyze, in a systematic way, its dependence on the different parameters of the black hole and fermionic field. We compare our values with previous results available in the literature for Kerr and for the static limit. The numerical results show several differences between the four and five dimensional cases. For instance, in five dimensions the symmetry between the positive and negative (real) frequency of the modes breaks down, which results in a richer spectrum.

Quasinormal modes of compact objects in alternative theories of gravity

We address quasinormal modes of compact objects in several alternative theories of gravity. In particular, we focus on black holes and neutron stars with scalar hair. We consider black holes in dilaton-Einstein-Gauß-Bonnet theory, and in a generalized scalar-Einstein-Gauß-Bonnet theory. In the latter case scalarized black holes arise, and we study the stability of the different branches of solutions. In particular, we discuss how the spectrum of quasinormal modes is changed by the presence of a non-trivial scalar field outside the black hole horizon. We discuss the existence of an (effective) minimum mass in these models, and how the spectrum of modes becomes richer as compared to general relativity, when a scalar field is present. Subsequently we discuss the effect of scalar hair for realistic neutron star models. Here we consider $R^2$ gravity, scalar-tensor theory, a particular subsector of Horndeski theory with a non-minimal derivative coupling, and again dilatonic-Einstein-Gauß-Bonnet theory. Because of the current lack of knowledge on the internal composition of the neutron stars, we focus on universal relations for the quasinormal modes, that are largely independent of the equations of state and thus the matter content of the stars.

Solutions of the massive Dirac equation in the near-horizon metric of the extremal five dimensional Myers-Perry black hole with equal angular momenta

We study massive Dirac fields in the background of the near-horizon limit of the extremal Myers-Perry black hole in five dimensions. We consider the case in which both angular momenta have equal magnitude. The resulting Dirac equation can be decoupled into an angular and a radial part. The solution of the angular part results in some algebraic relations that determine completely the angular quantum numbers of the fermionic field. The radial part can be analytically solved in terms of special functions, which allow us to analyze the near-horizon radial current of the Dirac field.

Axial Quasi-Normal Modes of Scalarized Neutron Stars with Realistic Equations of State

We compute the axial quasi-normal modes of static neutron stars in scalar tensor theory. In particular, we employ various realistic equations of state including nuclear, hyperonic and hybrid matter. We investigate the fundamental curvature mode and compare the results with those of General Relativity. We find that the frequency of the modes and the damping time are reduced for the scalarized neutron stars. In addition, we confirm and extend the universal relations for quasi-normal modes known in General Relativity to this wide range of realistic equations of state for scalarized neutron stars and confirm the universality of the scaled frequency and damping time in terms of the scaled moment of inertia as well as compactness for neutron stars with and without scalarization.

Scalar and axial quasinormal modes of massive static phantom wormholes

We study the quasinormal modes for scalar, axial and radial perturbations of massive static spherically symmetric wormholes supported by a phantom scalar field, calculating the modes directly and employing the WKB approximation. The spectrum of the quasinormal modes is compared with the spectrum of Schwarzschild black holes. For fixed multipole number $l$ and large mass $M$ the wormhole modes approach their black hole counterparts as $1/M$.

Radial perturbations of the scalarized EGB black holes

Recently a new class of scalarized black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) theories was discovered. What is special for these black hole solutions is that the scalarization is not due to the presence of matter, but {it is induced} by the curvature of spacetime itself. Moreover, more than one branch of scalarized solutions can bifurcate from the Schwarzschild branch, and these scalarized branches are characterized by the number of nodes of the scalar field. The next step is to consider the linear stability of these solutions, which is particularly important due to the fact that the Schwarzschild black holes lose stability at the first point of bifurcation. Therefore we here study in detail the radial perturbations of the scalarized EGB black holes. The results show that all branches with a nontrivial scalar field with one or more nodes are unstable. The stability of the solutions on the fundamental branch, whose scalar field has no radial nodes, depends on the particular choice of the coupling function between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. We consider two particular cases based on the previous studies of the background solutions. If this coupling has the form used in \cite{Doneva:2017bvd} the fundamental branch of solutions is stable, except for very small masses. In the case of a coupling function quadratic in the scalar field \cite{Silva:2017uqg}, though, the whole fundamental branch is unstable.

Axial quasinormal modes of static neutron stars in the nonminimal derivative coupling sector of Horndeski gravity: spectrum and universal relations for realistic equations of state

We study axial quasinormal modes of static neutron stars in the nonminimal derivative coupling sector of Horndeski theory. We focus on the fundamental curvature mode, which we analyse for ten different equations of state with different matter content. A comparison with the results obtained in pure General Relativity reveals that, apart from modifying the spectrum of the frequencies and the damping times of the stars, this theory modifies several universal relations between the modes and physical parameters of the stars, that are otherwise matter-independent.

New black holes in $D=5$ minimal gauged supergravity: Deformed boundaries and frozen horizons

A new class of black hole solutions of the five dimensional minimal gauged supergravity is presented. They are characterized by the mass, the electric charge, two equal magnitude angular momenta and the magnitude of the magnetic potential at infinity. These black holes possess a horizon of spherical topology; however, both the horizon and the sphere at infinity can be arbitrarily squashed, with nonextremal solutions interpolating between black strings and black branes. A particular set of extremal configurations corresponds to a new one-parameter family of supersymmetric black holes. While their conserved charges are determined by the squashing of the sphere at infinity, these supersymmetric solutions possess the same horizon geometry.

Axial quasi-normal modes of neutron stars in $R^2$ gravity

In the present paper the axial quasi-normal modes of neutron stars in $f(R)$ gravity are examined using a large set of equations of state. The numerical calculations are made using two different approaches -- performing time evolution of the perturbation equations and solving the time-independent representation of the equations as a boundary value problem. According to the results the mode frequencies and the damping times decrease with the increase of the free parameter of the theory in comparison to the pure general relativistic case. While the frequencies deviate significantly from Einstein's theory for all realistic neutron star masses (say above $1M_\odot$), the damping times reach non-negligible differences only for the more massive models. We have constructed as well universal (equation of state independent) gravitational wave asteroseismology relations involving the frequencies and the damping times. It turns out that the equation of state independence is preserved using the same normalization as in pure general relativity and the qualitative differences of the phenomenological relations with respect to Einstein's theory of gravity can be large for large values of the free parameter in $f(R)$ gravity.

Squashed, magnetized black holes in $D=5$ minimal gauged supergravity

We construct a new class of black hole solutions in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with a negative cosmological constant. These configurations are cohomogeneity-1, with two equal-magnitude angular momenta. In the generic case, they possess a non-vanishing magnetic potential at infinity with a boundary metric which is the product of time and a squashed three-dimensional sphere. Both extremal and non-extremal black holes are studied. The non-extremal black holes satisfying a certain relation between electric charge, angular momenta and magnitude of the magnetic potential at infinity do not trivialize in the limit of vanishing event horizon size, becoming particle-like (non-topological) solitonic configurations. Among the extremal black holes, we show the existence of a new one-parameter family of supersymmetric solutions, which bifurcate from a critical Gutowski-Reall configuration.

Slowly damped quasinormal modes of the massive Dirac field in d-dimensional Tangherlini spacetime

We consider quasinormal modes of the massive Dirac field in the background of a Schwarzschild- Tangherlini black hole. Different dimensions of the spacetime are considered, from d = 4 to d = 9. The quasinormal modes are calculated using two independent methods: WKB and continued fraction. We obtain the spectrum of quasinormal modes for different values of the overtone number and angular quantum number. An analytical approximation of the spectrum valid in the case of large values of the angular quantum number and mass is calculated. Although we don't find unstable modes in the spectrum, we show that for large values of the mass, the quasinormal modes can become very slowly damped, giving rise to quasistationary perturbations.

Radially Excited AdS$_5$ Black Holes in Einstein--Maxwell--Chern--Simons Theory

In the large coupling regime of the 5-dimensional Einstein--Maxwell--Chern--Simons theory, charged and rotating cohomogeneity-1 black holes form sequences of extremal and non-extremal radially excited configurations. These asymptotically global Anti-de Sitter (AdS$_5$) black holes form a discrete set of solutions, characterised by the vanishing of the total angular momenta, or the horizon angular velocity. However, the solutions are not static. In this paper, we study the branch structure that contains these excited states, and its relation with the static Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole. Thermodynamic properties of these solutions are considered, revealing that the branches with lower excitation number can become thermodynamically unstable beyond certain critical solutions that depend on the free parameters of the configuration.

Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons Black Holes

Black holes in 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons (EMCS) theory and their intriguing properties are discussed. For the special case of the CS coupling constant $λ=λ_{SG}$, as obtained from supergravity, a closed form solution is known for the rotating black holes. Beyond this supergravity value, the EMCS black hole solutions can e.g. exhibit nonuniqueness and form sequences of radially excited solutions. In the presence of a negative cosmological constant the black holes can possess an extra-parameter corresponding to a magnetic flux in addition to the mass, electric charge and angular momenta. This latter family of black holes possesses also a solitonic limit. Finally, a new class of squashed EMCS black hole solutions is discussed.

Scalarization of neutron stars with realistic equations of state

We consider the effect of scalarization on static and slowly rotating neutron stars for a wide variety of realistic equations of state, including pure nuclear matter, nuclear matter with hyperons, hybrid nuclear and quark matter, and pure quark matter. We analyze the onset of scalarization, presenting a universal relation for the critical coupling parameter versus compactness. We find that the onset and the magnitude of the scalarization are strongly correlated with the value of the gravitational potential (the metric component $g_{tt}$) at the center of the star. We also consider the moment-of-inertia--compactness relations and confirm universality for the nuclear matter, hyperon and hybrid equations of state.
