On the dual of variable Lebesgue spaces with unbounded exponent

We study the dual space of the variable Lebesgue space $\Lp$ with unbounded exponent function $\pp$ and provide an answer to a question posed in~[fiorenza-cruzuribe2013]. Our approach is to decompose the dual into a topological direct sum of Banach spaces. The first component corresponds to the dual in the bounded exponent case, and the second is, intuitively, the dual of functions that live where the exponent is unbounded (in a heuristic sense). The second space is extremely complicated, and we illustrate this with a series of examples. In the special case of the variable sequence space $\ell^\pp$, we show that this piece can be further decomposed into two spaces, one of which can be characterized in terms of a generalization of finitely additive measures. As part of our work, we also considered the question of dense subsets in $\Lp$ for unbounded exponents. We constructed two examples, one for general variable Lebesgue spaces $\Lp$ and one in the sequence space $\lp$. This gives an answer to another question from~[fiorenza-cruzuribe2013].

Sparse domination and the strong maximal function

We study the problem of dominating the dyadic strong maximal function by $(1, 1)$-type sparse forms based on rectangles with sides parallel to the axes, and show that such domination is impossible. Our proof relies on an explicit construction of a pair of maximally separated point sets with respect to an appropriately defined notion of distance

A sparse domination principle for rough singular integrals

We prove that bilinear forms associated to the rough homogeneous singular integrals $T_Ω$ on $\mathbb R^d$, where the angular part $Ω\in L^q (S^{d-1})$ has vanishing average and $1<q\leq \infty$, and to Bochner-Riesz means at the critical index in $\mathbb R^d$ are dominated by sparse forms involving $(1,p)$ averages. This domination is stronger than the weak-$L^1$ estimates for $T_Ω$ and for Bochner-Riesz means, respectively due to Seeger and Christ. Furthermore, our domination theorems entail as a corollary new sharp quantitative $A_p$-weighted estimates for Bochner-Riesz means and for homogeneous singular integrals with unbounded angular part, extending previous results of Hytönen-Roncal-Tapiola for $T_Ω$. Our results follow from a new abstract sparse domination principle which does not rely on weak endpoint estimates for maximal truncations.

Weighted bounds for multilinear operators with non-smooth kernels

Let $T$ be a multilinear integral operator which is bounded on certain products of Lebesgue spaces on $\mathbb R^n$. We assume that its associated kernel satisfies some mild regularity condition which is weaker than the usual Hölder continuity of those in the class of multilinear Calderón-Zygmund singular integral operators. In this paper, given a suitable multiple weight $\vec{w}$, we obtain the bound for the weighted norm of multilinear operators $T$ in terms of $\vec{w}$. As applications, we exploit this result to obtain the weighted bounds for certain singular integral operators such as linear and multilinear Fourier multipliers and the Riesz transforms associated to Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our results are new even in the linear case.

Atomic blocks for noncommutative martingales

Given a probability space $(Ω,Σ,μ)$, the Hardy space $\mathrm{H}_1(Ω)$ which is associated to the martingale square function does not admit a classical atomic decomposition when the underlying filtration is not regular. In this paper we construct a decomposition of $\mathrm{H}_1(Ω)$ into "atomic blocks"${}$ in the spirit of Tolsa, which we will introduce for martingales. We provide three proofs of this result. Only the first one also applies to noncommutative martingales, the main target of this paper. The other proofs emphasize alternative approaches for commutative martingales. One might be well-known to experts, using a weaker notion of atom and approximation by atomic filtrations. The last one adapts Tolsa's argument replacing medians by conditional medians.

A pointwise estimate for positive dyadic shifts and some applications

We prove a pointwise estimate for positive dyadic shifts of complexity $m$ which is linear in the complexity. This can be used to give a pointwise estimate for Calderón-Zygmund operators and to answer a question posed by A. Lerner. Several applications to weighted estimates for both multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators and square functions are discussed.

Large BMO spaces vs interpolation

In this paper we introduce a class of BMO spaces which interpolate with $L_p$ and are sufficiently large to serve as endpoints for new singular integral operators. More precisely, let $(Ω, Σ, μ)$ be a $σ$-finite measure space. Consider two filtrations of $Σ$ by successive refinement of two atomic $σ$-algebras $Σ_\mathrm{a}, Σ_\mathrm{b}$ having trivial intersection. Construct the corresponding truncated martingale BMO spaces. Then, the intersection seminorm only leaves out constants and we provide a quite flexible condition on $(Σ_\mathrm{a}, Σ_\mathrm{b})$ so that the resulting space interpolates with $L_p$ in the expected way. In the presence of a metric $d$, we obtain endpoint estimates for Calderón-Zygmund operators on $(Ω,μ, d)$ under additional conditions on $(Σ_\mathrm{a}, Σ_\mathrm{b})$. These are weak forms of the \lq isoperimetric\rq${}$ and the \lq locally doubling\rq${}$ properties of Carbonaro/Mauceri/Meda which admit less concentration at the boundary. Examples of particular interest include densities of the form $e^{\pm |x|^α}$ for any $α> 0$ or $(1 + |x|^β)^{-1}$ for any $β\gtrsim n^{3/2}$. A (limited) comparison with Tolsa's RBMO is also possible. On the other hand, a more intrinsic formulation yields a Calderón-Zygmund theory adapted to regular filtrations over $(Σ_\mathrm{a}, Σ_\mathrm{b})$ without using a metric. This generalizes well-known estimates for perfect dyadic and Haar shift operators. In contrast to previous approaches, ours extends to matrix-valued functions (via recent results from noncommutative martingale theory) for which only limited results are known and no satisfactory nondoubling theory exists so far.
