Rotating elastic string loops in flat and black hole spacetimes: stability, cosmic censorship and the Penrose process

We rederive the equations of motion for relativistic strings, that is, one-dimensional elastic bodies whose internal energy depends only on their stretching, and use them to study circular string loops rotating in the equatorial plane of flat and black hole spacetimes. We start by obtaining the conditions for equilibrium, and find that: (i) if the string's longitudinal speed of sound does not exceed the speed of light then its radius when rotating in Minkowski's spacetime is always larger than its radius when at rest; (ii) in Minkowski's spacetime, equilibria are linearly stable for rotation speeds below a certain threshold, higher than the string's longitudinal speed of sound, and linearly unstable for some rotation speeds above it; (iii) equilibria are always linearly unstable in Schwarzschild's spacetime. Moreover, we study interactions of a rotating string loop with a Kerr black hole, namely in the context of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture and the Penrose process. We find that: (i) elastic string loops that satisfy the null energy condition cannot overspin extremal black holes; (ii) elastic string loops that satisfy the dominant energy condition cannot increase the maximum efficiency of the usual particle Penrose process; (iii) if the dominant energy condition (but not the weak energy condition) is violated then the efficiency can be increased. This last result hints at the interesting possibility that the dominant energy condition may underlie the well known upper bounds for the efficiencies of energy extraction processes (including, for example, superradiance).

Explicit formulas and decay rates for the solution of the wave equation in cosmological spacetimes

We obtain explicit formulas for the solution of the wave equation in certain Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetimes. Our method, pioneered by Klainerman and Sarnak, consists in finding differential operators that map solutions of the wave equation in these FLRW spacetimes to solutions of the conformally invariant wave equation in simpler, ultra-static spacetimes, for which spherical mean formulas are available. In addition to recovering the formulas for the dust-filled flat and hyperbolic FLRW spacetimes originally derived by Klainerman and Sarnak, and generalizing them to the spherical case, we obtain new formulas for the radiation-filled FLRW spacetimes and also for the de Sitter, anti-de Sitter and Milne universes. We use these formulas to study the solutions with respect to the Huygens principle and the decay rates, and to formulate conjectures about the general decay rates in flat and hyperbolic FLRW spacetimes. The positive resolution of the conjecture in the flat case is seen to follow from known results in the literature.

Decay of solutions to the Klein-Gordon equation on some expanding cosmological spacetimes

The decay of solutions to the Klein-Gordon equation is studied in two expanding cosmological spacetimes, namely the de Sitter universe in flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) form, and the cosmological region of the Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter (RNdS) model. Using energy methods, for initial data with finite higher order energies, decay rates for the solution are obtained. Also, a previously established decay rate of the time derivative of the solution to the wave equation, in an expanding de Sitter universe in flat FLRW form, is improved, proving Rendall's conjecture. A similar improvement is also given for the wave equation in the cosmological region of the RNdS spacetime.

Matching stationary spacetimes

Using the quasi-Maxwell formalism, we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the matching of two stationary spacetimes along a stationary timelike hypersurface, expressed in terms of the gravitational and gravitomagnetic fields and the 2-dimensional matching surface on the space manifold. We prove existence and uniqueness results to the matching problem for stationary perfect fluid spacetimes with spherical, planar, hyperbolic and cylindrical symmetry. Finally, we find an explicit interior for the cylindrical analogue of the NUT spacetime.

Relativistic elasticity of rigid rods and strings

We show that the equation of motion for a rigid one-dimensional elastic body (i.e. a rod or string whose speed of sound is equal to the speed of light) in a two-dimensional spacetime is simply the wave equation. We then solve this equation in a few simple examples: a rigid rod colliding with an unmovable wall, a rigid rod being pushed by a constant force, a rigid string whose endpoints are simultaneously set in motion (seen as a special case of Bell's spaceships paradox), and a radial rigid string that has partially crossed the event horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole while still being held from the outside.

Test fields cannot destroy extremal de Sitter black holes

We determine the timelike Killing vector field that gives the correct definition of energy for test fields propagating in a Kerr-Newman-de Sitter spacetime, and use this result to prove that test fields cannot destroy extremal Kerr-Newman-de Sitter black holes.

Test fields cannot destroy extremal black holes

We prove that (possibly charged) test fields satisfying the null energy condition at the event horizon cannot overspin/overcharge extremal Kerr-Newman or Kerr-Newman-anti de Sitter black holes, that is, the weak cosmic censorship conjecture cannot be violated in the test field approximation. The argument relies on black hole thermodynamics (without assuming cosmic censorship), and does not depend on the precise nature of the fields. We also discuss generalizations of this result to other extremal black holes.

Painleve-Gullstrand Coordinates for the Kerr Solution

We construct a coordinate system for the Kerr solution, based on the zero angular momentum observers dropped from infinity, which generalizes the Painleve-Gullstrand coordinate system for the Schwarzschild solution. The Kerr metric can then be interpreted as describing space flowing on a (curved) Riemannian 3-manifold. The stationary limit arises as the set of points on this manifold where the speed of the flow equals the speed of light, and the horizons as the set of points where the radial speed equals the speed of light. A deeper analysis of what is meant by the flow of space reveals that the acceleration of free-falling objects is generally not in the direction of this flow. Finally, we compare the new coordinate system with the closely related Doran coordinate system.

A Minkowski-type inequality for convex surfaces in the hyperbolic 3-space

In this note we derive a new Minkowski-type inequality for closed convex surfaces in the hyperbolic 3-space. The inequality is obtained by explicitly computing the area of the family of surfaces obtained from the normal flow and then applying the isoperimetric inequality. Using the same method, we also we give elementary proofs of the classical Minkowski inequalities for closed convex surfaces in the Euclidean 3-space and in the 3-sphere.

The problem of a self-gravitating scalar field with positive cosmological constant

We study the Einstein-scalar field system with positive cosmological constant and spherically symmetric characteristic initial data given on a truncated null cone. We prove well-posedness, global existence and exponential decay in (Bondi) time, for small data. From this, it follows that initial data close enough to de Sitter data evolves to a causally geodesically complete spacetime (with boundary), which approaches a region of de Sitter asymptotically at an exponential rate; this is a non-linear stability result for de Sitter within the class under consideration, as well as a realization of the cosmic no-hair conjecture.

Optimal escape from circular orbits around black holes

Using the theory of optimal rocket trajectories in general relativity, recently developed in arXiv:1105.5235, we show that the "obvious" manoeuvre of using a tangential instantaneous acceleration to escape a stable circular orbit in the Schwarzschild spacetime satisfies the optimality conditions if and only if the magnitude of the acceleration is smaller than a certain bound.

Linking and causality in (2+1)-dimensional static spacetimes

Given a (d+1)-dimensional spacetime (M,g), one can consider the set N of all its null geodesics. If (M,g) is globally hyperbolic then this set is naturally a smooth (2d-1)-manifold. The sky of an event x in M is the set X of all null geodesics through x, and is an embedded submanifold of N diffeomorphic to S^{d-1}. Low conjectured that if d=2 then x,y are causally related in M iff X,Y are linked in N. We prove Low's conjecture for a (large) class of static spacetimes.

Spherical linear waves in de Sitter spacetime

We apply Christodoulou's framework, developed to study the Einstein-scalar field equations in spherical symmetry, to the linear wave equation in de Sitter spacetime, as a first step towards the Einstein-scalar field equations with positive cosmological constant. We obtain an integro-differential evolution equation which we solve by taking initial data on a null cone. As a corollary we obtain elementary derivations of expected properties of linear waves in de Sitter spacetime: boundedness in terms of (characteristic) initial data, and a Price law establishing uniform exponential decay, in Bondi time, to a constant.

Optimal time travel in the Godel universe

Using the theory of optimal rocket trajectories in general relativity, recently developed in arXiv:1105.5235, we present a candidate for the minimum total integrated acceleration closed timelike curve in the Godel universe, and give evidence for its minimality. The total integrated acceleration of this curve is lower than Malament's conjectured value (Malament, 1984), as was already implicit in the work of Manchak (Manchak, 2011); however, Malament's conjecture does seem to hold for periodic closed timelike curves.

An elementary derivation of the Montgomery phase formula for the Euler top

We give an elementary derivation of the Montgomery phase formula for the motion of an Euler top, using only basic facts about the Euler equation and parallel transport on the 2-sphere (whose holonomy is seen to be responsible for the geometric phase). We also give an approximate geometric interpretation of the geometric phase for motions starting close to an unstable equilibrium point.

Quasi-Maxwell interpretation of the spin-curvature coupling

We write the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations of motion for a spinning particle in a stationary spacetime using the quasi-Maxwell formalism and give an interpretation of the coupling between spin and curvature. The formalism is then used to compute equilibrium positions for spinning particles in the NUT spacetime.

The rocket problem in general relativity

We derive the covariant optimality conditions for rocket trajectories in general relativity, with and without a bound on the magnitude of the proper acceleration. The resulting theory is then applied to solve two specific problems: the minimum fuel consumption transfer between two galaxies in a FLRW model, and between two stable circular orbits in the Schwarzschild spacetime.
