The Birth of Gravitational Particle Creation: the Enduring Legacy of Leonard Parker's 1966 Thesis

This paper offers a historical overview of the origins and enduring significance of gravitational particle creation, a groundbreaking discovery first formulated in Leonard Parker's 1966 doctoral thesis at Harvard University. By tracing the context in which Parker developed this idea and examining its subsequent influence, the paper highlights how the concept of gravitational particle creation advanced the study of quantum field theory in curved spacetime and profoundly shaped modern cosmology, as well as the quantum theory of black holes.

On the renormalization of ultraviolet divergences in the inflationary angular power spectrum

We revise the role that ultraviolet divergences of quantum fields play in slow-roll inflation, and discuss the renormalization of cosmological observables from a space-time perspective, namely the angular power spectrum. We first derive an explicit expression for the multipole coefficients $C_{\ell}$ in the Sachs-Wolfe regime in terms of the two-point function of primordial perturbations. We then analyze the ultraviolet behavior, and point out that the standard result in the literature is equivalent to a renormalization of $C_{\ell}$ at zero ``adiabatic'' order. We further argue that renormalization at second ``adiabatic'' order may be more appropriate from the viewpoint of standard quantum field theory. This may change significantly the predictions for $C_{\ell}$, while maintaining scale invariance.

Adiabatic regularization for spin $1/2$ fields and the renormalized stress-energy tensor

In this article we briefly review the adiabatic renormalization program for spin 1/2 fields in expanding universes. We introduce the method and provide explicit expressions for the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor. Then, we discuss its application to some cosmological scenario of physical interest. We end up sketching out the proof that adiabatic and DeWitt-Schwinger point-splitting schemes provide the same renormalized expectation values of the stress-energy tensor for Dirac fields.

Comment on "Gravitational Pair Production and Black Hole Evaporation"

We scrutinize the recent Letter "Gravitational pair production and black hole evaporation" by M.F. Wondrak, W.D. van Suijlekom and H. Falcke [Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 221502 (2023); arXiv:2305.18521]. We show that some consequences based on the proposed imaginary part of the lowest order effective action are in sharp tension with exact results on pair creation in electrodynamics and cosmology. This casts serious doubt on their claims for particle production in a Schwarzschild spacetime.

New partial resummation of the QED effective action

We explain a conjecture which states that the proper-time series expansion of the one-loop effective Lagrangian of quantum electrodynamics can be partially summed in all terms containing the field-strength invariants $\mathcal{F} = \frac{1}{4} F_{μν}F^{μν} (x)$, $\mathcal{G}= \frac{1}{4} \tilde F_{μν}F^{μν}(x)$. This summation is encapsulated in a factor with the same form as the (spacetime-dependent) Heisenberg-Euler Lagrangian density. We also discuss some implications and a possible extension in presence of gravity. We will focus on the scalar field case.

Pair production due to an electric field in 1+1 dimensions and the validity of the semiclassical approximation

Solutions to the backreaction equation in 1+1-dimensional semiclassical electrodynamics are obtained and analyzed when considering a time-varying homogeneous electric field initially generated by a classical electric current, coupled to either a quantized scalar field or a quantized spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ field. Particle production by way of the Schwinger effect leads to backreaction effects that modulate the electric field strength. Details of the particle production process are investigated along with the transfer of energy between the electric field and the particles. The validity of the semiclassical approximation is also investigated using a criterion previously implemented for chaotic inflation and, in an earlier form, semiclassical gravity. The criterion states that the semiclassical approximation will break down if any linearized gauge-invariant quantity constructed from solutions to the linear response equation, with finite nonsingular data, grows rapidly for some period of time. Approximations to homogeneous solutions of the linear response equation are computed and it is found that the criterion is violated when the maximum value, $E_{\rm max}$, obtained by the electric field is of the order of the critical scale for the Schwinger effect, $E_{\rm max} \sim E_{\rm crit}\equiv m^2/q$, where $m$ is the mass of the quantized field and $q$ is its electric charge. For these approximate solutions the criterion appears to be satisfied in the extreme limits $\frac{qE_{\rm max}}{m^2} \ll 1$ and $\frac{qE_{\rm max}}{m^2} \gg 1$.

$(\mathcal{F},\mathcal{G})$-summed form of the QED effective action

We conjecture that the proper-time series expansion of the one-loop effective Lagrangian of quantum electrodynamics can be summed in all terms containing the field-strength invariants $\mathcal{F} = \frac{1}{4} F_{μν}F^{μν} (x)$, $\mathcal{G}= \frac{1}{4} \tilde F_{μν}F^{μν}(x)$, including those also possessing derivatives of the electromagnetic field strength. This partial resummation is exactly encapsulated in a factor with the same form as the Heisenberg-Euler Lagrangian density, except that now the electric and magnetic fields can depend arbitrarily on spacetime coordinates. We provide strong evidence for this conjecture, which is proved to sixth order in the proper time. Furthermore, and as a byproduct, we generate some solvable electromagnetic backgrounds. We also discuss the implications for a generalization of the Schwinger formula for pair production induced by nonconstant electric fields. Finally, we briefly outline the extension of these results in the presence of gravity.

Running gravitational couplings, decoupling, and curved spacetime renormalization

We propose to slightly generalize the DeWitt-Schwinger adiabatic renormalization subtractions in curved space to include an arbitrary renormalization mass scale $μ$. The new predicted running for the gravitational couplings are fully consistent with decoupling of heavy massive fields. This is a somewhat improvement with respect to the more standard treatment of minimal (DeWitt-Schwinger) subtractions via dimensional regularization. We also show how the vacuum metamorphosis model emerges from the running couplings.

Adiabatic regularization for Dirac fields in time-varying electric backgrounds

The adiabatic regularization method was originally proposed by Parker and Fulling to renormalize the energy-momentum tensor of scalar fields in expanding universes. It can be extended to renormalize the electric current induced by quantized scalar fields in a time-varying electric background. This can be done in a way consistent with gravity if the vector potential is considered as a variable of adiabatic order one. Assuming this, we further extend the method to deal with Dirac fields in four spacetime dimensions. This requires a self-consistent ansatz for the adiabatic expansion, in presence of a prescribed time-dependent electric field, which is different from the conventional expansion used for scalar fields. Our proposal is consistent, in the massless limit, with the conformal anomaly. We also provide evidence that our proposed adiabatic expansion for the fermionic modes parallels the Schwinger-DeWitt adiabatic expansion of the two-point function. We give the renormalized expression of the electric current and analyze, using numerical and analytical tools, the pair production induced by a Sauter-type electric pulse. We also analyze the scaling properties of the current for a large field strength.

R-summed form of adiabatic expansions in curved spacetime

The Feynman propagator in curved spacetime admits an asymptotic (Schwinger-DeWitt) series expansion in derivatives of the metric. Remarkably, all terms in the series containing the Ricci scalar R can be summed exactly. We show that this (non-perturbative) property of the Schwinger-DeWitt series has a natural and equivalent counterpart in the adiabatic (Parker-Fulling) series expansion of the scalar modes in an homogeneous cosmological spacetime. The equivalence between both R-summed adiabatic expansions can be further extended when a background scalar field is also present.

Spontaneous creation of circularly polarized photons in chiral astrophysical systems

This work establishes a relation between chiral anomalies in curved spacetimes and the radiative content of the gravitational field. In particular, we show that a flux of circularly polarized gravitational waves triggers the spontaneous creation of photons with net circular polarization from the quantum vacuum. Using waveform catalogues we identify precessing binary black holes as astrophysical configurations that emit such gravitational radiation, and then solve the fully non-linear Einstein's equations with numerical relativity to evaluate the net effect. The quantum amplitude for a merger is comparable to the Hawking emission rate of the final black hole, and small to be directly observed. However, the implications for the inspiral of binary neutron stars could be more prominent, as argued on symmetry grounds.

Breaking of adiabatic invariance in the creation of particles by electromagnetic fields

Particles are spontaneously created from the vacuum by time-varying gravitational or electromagnetic backgrounds. It has been proven that the particle number operator in an expanding universe is an adiabatic invariant. In this paper we show that, in some special cases, the expected adiabatic invariance of the particle number fails in presence of electromagnetic backgrounds. In order to do this, we consider as a prototype a Sauter-type electric pulse. Furthermore, we also show a close relation between the breaking of the adiabatic invariance and the emergence of the axial anomaly.

A Non-Local Action for Electrodynamics: Duality Symmetry and the Aharonov-Bohm Effect, Revisited

A non-local action functional for electrodynamics depending on the electric and magnetic fields, instead of potentials, has been proposed in the literature. In this work we elaborate and improve this proposal. We also use this formalism to confront the electric-magnetic duality symmetry of the electromagnetic field and the Aharonov--Bohm effect, two subtle aspects of electrodynamics that we examine in a novel way. We show how the former can be derived from the simple harmonic oscillator character of vacuum electrodynamics, while also demonstrating how the magnetic version of the latter naturally arises in an explicitly non-local manner.

Translational anomaly of chiral fermions in two dimensions

It is well known that a quantized two-dimensional Weyl fermion coupled to gravity spoils general covariance and breaks the covariant conservation of the energy-momentum tensor. In this brief article, we point out that the quantum conservation of the momentum can also fail in flat spacetime, provided the Weyl fermion is coupled to a time-varying homogeneous electric field. This signals a quantum anomaly of the space-translation symmetry, which has not been highlighted in the literature so far.

Adiabatic regularization with a Yukawa interaction

We extend the adiabatic regularization method for an expanding universe to include the Yukawa interaction between a quantized Dirac field and a homogeneous time-dependent scalar field. We present the renormalized semiclassical equations that are needed in order to take into account the backreaction of the produced Dirac fermions in both gravitational and scalar background fields.

Pair creation in electric fields, renormalization, and backreaction

We consider pair production phenomena in spatially homogeneous strong electric fields. We focus on spinor QED in two-dimensions and discuss the potential ambiguity in the adiabatic order assignment for the electromagnetic potential required to fix the renormalization subtractions. This ambiguity can be univocally fixed by imposing, at the semiclassical level, stress-energy conservation when both electric and gravitational backgrounds are present.

Running couplings from adiabatic regularization

We extend the adiabatic regularization method by introducing an arbitrary mass scale $μ$ in the construction of the subtraction terms. This allows us to obtain, in a very robust way, the running of the coupling constants by demanding $μ$-invariance of the effective semiclassical (Maxwell-Einstein) equations. In particular, we get the running of the electric charge of perturbative quantum electrodynamics. Furthermore, the method brings about a renormalization of the cosmological constant and the Newtonian gravitational constant. The running obtained for these dimensionful coupling constants has new relevant (non-logarithmic) contributions, not predicted by dimensional regularization.

On the Electric-Magnetic Duality Symmetry: Quantum Anomaly, Optical Helicity, and Particle Creation

It is well known that not every symmetry of a classical field theory is also a symmetry of its quantum version. When this occurs, we speak of quantum anomalies. The existence of anomalies imply that some classical Noether charges are no longer conserved in the quantum theory. In this paper, we discuss a new example for quantum electromagnetic fields propagating in the presence of gravity. We argue that the symmetry under electric-magnetic duality rotations of the source-free Maxwell action is anomalous in curved spacetimes. The classical Noether charge associated with these transformations accounts for the net circular polarization or the optical helicity of the electromagnetic field. Therefore, our results describe the way the spacetime curvature changes the helicity of photons and opens the possibility of extracting information from strong gravitational fields through the observation of the polarization of photons. We also argue that the physical consequences of this anomaly can be understood in terms of the asymmetric quantum creation of photons by the gravitational~field.
