Constraining LLTB models with galaxy cluster counts from next generation surveys

The Universe's assumed homogeneity and isotropy is known as the cosmological principle. It is one of the assumptions that lead to the Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric and it is a cornerstone of modern cosmology, because the metric plays a crucial role into the determination of the cosmological observables. Thus, it is of paramount importance to question this principle and perform observational tests that may falsify this hypothesis. Here we explore the use of galaxy cluster counts as a probe of a large-scale inhomogeneity, which is a novel approach for the study of inhomogeneous models, and to determine the precision with which future galaxy cluster surveys will be able to test the cosmological principle. We present forecast constraints on the inhomogeneous Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model with a cosmological constant and cold dark matter, from a combination of simulated data according to a compilation of `Stage-IV' galaxy surveys following a methodology that involves the use of a mass function correction from numerical $N$-body simulations of an LTB cosmology. When considering the \lcdm fiducial model as a baseline for constructing our mock catalogs, we find that our combination of the forthcoming cluster surveys, will improve the constraints on the cosmological principle parameters as well on the FLRW parameters by about $50\%$ with respect to previous similar forecasts performed using geometrical and linear growth of structure probes, with $\pm20\%$ variations depending on the level of knowledge of systematic effects. These results indicate that galaxy cluster abundances are sensitive probes of inhomogeneity, and that next-generation galaxy cluster surveys, will thoroughly test homogeneity at cosmological scales, tightening the constraints on possible violations of the cosmological principle in the framework of $Λ$LTB scenarios. The cosmological frame principle and cosmic acceleration

We discuss implications of the cosmological frame principle which states that cosmological effects of modified gravity must be stable as solutions of each of the corresponding sets of dynamical equations holding in the two conformally-related frames. We show that there are such globally stable, `frame-independent' solutions describing cosmic acceleration, suggesting that they may represent a physically relevant effect. This result highlights the importance of further investigation into the implications of the frame principle for cosmological properties that rely on the use of conformal frames.

Legendre scalarization in gravity and cosmology

We propose a new formulation of $f(R)$ gravity, dubbed scalarized $f(R)$ gravity, in which the Legendre transform is included as a dynamical term. This leads to a theory with second-order field equations that describes general relativity with a self-interacting scalar field, without requiring the introduction of conformal frames. We demonstrate that the quadratic version of scalarized $f(R)$ gravity reduces to general relativity with a massive scalar field, and we explore its implications for Friedmann cosmology. Our findings suggest that scalarized $f(R)$ gravity may lead to simplified descriptions of cosmological applications, while the proposed formulation could offer a new perspective on the relationship between $f(R)$ gravity and scalar-tensor theories.

Fluctuations of the flux of energy on the apparent horizon

Adopting the Landau-Lifshiftz method of classical fluctuations we determine the statistical average strength of the fluctuations of the energy flux on the apparent horizon of a homogeneous and isotropic universe described by Einstein gravity. We find that the fluctuations increase with the temperature of the horizon and decrease with its area, in accordance with the features of systems where gravity can be neglected. %is absent. We further find, on the one hand, that the fluctuations vanish in the cosmological constant dominated de Sitter expansion, and, on the other hand, that the domination of phantom fields is excluded. The reasonableness of the results we have obtained lend support to the view that the universe behaves as a normal thermodynamic system.

Brane Isotropisation in Extra-Dimensional Tolman-Bondi Universe

We consider the dynamics of a 3-brane embedded in an extra-dimensional Tolman-Bondi Universe where the origin of space plays a special role. The embedding is chosen such that the induced matter distribution on the brane respects the spherical symmetry of matter in the extra dimensional space. The mirage cosmology on the probe brane is studied, resulting in an inhomogeneous and anisotropic four dimensional cosmology where the origin of space is also special. We then focus on the spatial geometry around the origin and show that the induced geometry, which is initially inhomogeneous and anisotropic, converges to an isotropic and homogeneous Friedmann-Lemaitre 4d space-time. For instance, when a 3-brane is embedded in a 5d matter dominated model, the 4d dynamics around the origin converge to a Friedmann-Lemaitre Universe in a radiation dominated epoch. We analyse this isotropisation process and show that it is a late time attractor.

Asymptotic behavior of the warm inflation scenario with viscous pressure

We analyze the dynamics of models of warm inflation with general dissipative effects. We consider phenomenological terms both for the inflaton decay rate and for viscous effects within matter. We provide a classification of the asymptotic behavior of these models and show that the existence of a late-time scaling regime depends not only on an asymptotic behavior of the scalar field potential, but also on an appropriate asymptotic behavior of the inflaton decay rate. There are scaling solutions whenever the latter evolves to become proportional to the Hubble rate of expansion regardless of the steepness of the scalar field exponential potential. We show from thermodynamic arguments that the scaling regime is associated to a power-law dependence of the matter-radiation temperature on the scale factor, which allows a mild variation of the temperature of the matter/radiation fluid. We also show that the late time contribution of the dissipative terms alleviates the depletion of matter, and increases the duration of inflation.

Stability analysis of cosmological models through Liapunov's method

We investigate the general asymptotic behaviour of Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) models with an inflaton field, scalar-tensor FRW cosmological models and diagonal Bianchi-IX models by means of Liapunov's method. This method provides information not only about the asymptotic stability of a given equilibrium point but also about its basin of attraction. This cannot be obtained by the usual methods found in the literature, such as linear stability analysis or first order perturbation techniques. Moreover, Liapunov's method is also applicable to non-autonomous systems. We use this advantadge to investigate the mechanism of reheating for the inflaton field in FRW models.

Scaling solutions from interacting fluids

We examine the dynamical implications of an interaction between some of the fluid components of the universe. We consider the combination of three matter components, one of which is a perfect fluid and the other two are interacting. The interaction term generalizes the cases found in scalar field cosmologies with an exponential potential. We find that attracting scaling solutions are obtained in several regions of parameter space, that oscillating behaviour is possible, and that new curvature scaling solutions exist. We also discuss the inflationary behaviour of the solutions and present some of the constraints on the strength of the coupling, namely those arising from nucleosynthesis.

On the potentials yielding cosmological scaling solutions

In the present work we perform a phase-plane analysis of the complete dynamical system corresponding to a flat FRW cosmological models with a perfect fluid and a self-interacting scalar field and show that every positive and monotonous potential which is asymptotically exponential yields a scaling solution as a global attractor.

Slow-roll inflation without fine-tuning

The slow-roll approximation is the usual starting point to study the constraints imposed on the inflaton potential parameters by the observational data. We show that, for a potential exhibiting at least two extrema and giving rise to a limited inflationary period, slow-roll does not have to be taken as an additional hypothesis and is in fact forced by the constraints on the number of e-foldings.

Anisotropic Scalar-Tensor Cosmologies

We examine homogeneous but anisotropic cosmologies in scalar-tensor gravity theories, including Brans-Dicke gravity. We present a method for deriving solutions for any isotropic perfect fluid with a barotropic equation of state ($p\proptoρ$) in a spatially flat (Bianchi type~I) cosmology. These models approach an isotropic, general relativistic solution as the expansion becomes dominated by the barotropic fluid. All models that approach general relativity isotropize except for the case of a maximally stiff fluid. For stiff fluid or radiation or in vacuum we are able to give solutions for arbitrary scalar-tensor theories in a number of anisotropic Bianchi and Kantowski-Sachs metrics. We show how this approach can also be used to derive solutions from the low-energy string effective action. We discuss the nature, and possibly avoidance of, the initial singularity where both shear and non-Einstein behavior is important.

Massless Fileds in Scalar-Tensor Cosmologies

We derive exact Friedmann--Robertson--Walker cosmological solutions in general scalar--tensor gravity theories, including Brans--Dicke gravity, for stiff matter or radiation. These correspond to the long or short wavelength modes respectively of massless scalar fields. If present, the long wavelength modes of such fields would be expected to dominate the energy density of the universe at early times and thus these models provide an insight into the classical behaviour of these scalar--tensor cosmologies near an initial singularity, or bounce. The particularly simple exact solutions also provide a useful example of the possible evolution of the Brans--Dicke (or dilaton) field, $ϕ$, and the Brans--Dicke parameter, $ω(ϕ)$, at late times in spatially curved as well as flat universes. We also discuss the corresponding solutions in the conformally related Einstein metric.
