Traveling Bubbles and Vortex Pairs within Symmetric 2D Quantum Droplets

We disclose a class of stable nonlinear traveling waves moving at specific constant velocities within symmetric two-dimensional quantum droplets. We present a comprehensive analysis of these traveling bubbles and identify three qualitatively distinct regions within the one-parameter family of solutions, classified by velocity: (i) well-separated phase singularities at low velocity, (ii) singularities within the same density dip at intermediate velocity, and (iii) rarefaction pulses without singularities at higher (subsonic) velocities. Then, we generalize the discussion to unstable cases, incorporating higher order vortex-antivortex pairs and arrays of vortices that move cohesively with a common velocity within the fluid. In all cases, we provide analytic approximations that aid the understanding of the results in different regimes.

Spatial solitons in thermo-optical media from the nonlinear Schrodinger-Poisson equation and dark matter analogues

We analyze theoretically the Schrodinger-Poisson equation in two transverse dimensions in the presence of a Kerr term. The model describes the nonlinear propagation of optical beams in thermooptical media and can be regarded as an analogue system for a self-gravitating self-interacting wave. We compute numerically the family of radially symmetric ground state bright stationary solutions for focusing and defocusing local nonlinearity, keeping in both cases a focusing nonlocal nonlinearity. We also analyze excited states and oscillations induced by fixing the temperature at the borders of the material. We provide simulations of soliton interactions, drawing analogies with the dynamics of galactic cores in the scalar field dark matter scenario.

Mapped Chebyshev pseudospectral method to study multiple scale phenomena

In the framework of mapped pseudospectral methods, we introduce a new polynomial-type mapping function in order to describe accurately the dynamics of systems developing almost singular structures. Using error criteria related to the spectral interpolation error, the new polynomial-type mapping is compared against previously proposed mappings for the study of collapse and shock wave phenomena. As a physical application, we study the dynamics of two coupled beams, described by coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations and modeling beam propagation in an atomic coherent media, whose spatial sizes differs up to several orders of magnitude. It is demonstrated, also by numerical simulations, that the accuracy properties of the new polynomial-type mapping outperforms in orders of magnitude the ones of the other studied mapping functions.

Switching of optical vortices in nonlinear annular couplers

We suggest an annular waveguide coupler for switching the angular momentum of light. We study linear and nonlinear coupling of both power and momentum of an optical vortex beam launched into one of the ring cores, and demonstrate that the switching takes place well below the collapse threshold. The switching is more effective for the inner-ring excitation since it triggers more sharply and for the lower power enough to avoid the beam azimuthal instability.

Spatial vector solitons in nonlinear photonic crystal fibers

We study spatial vector solitons in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) made of a material with the focusing Kerr nonlinearity. We show that such two-component localized nonlinear waves consist of two mutually trapped components confined by the PCF linear and the self-induced nonlinear refractive indices, and they bifurcate from the corresponding scalar solitons. We demonstrate that, in a sharp contrast with an entirely homogeneous nonlinear Kerr medium where both scalar and vector spatial solitons are unstable and may collapse, the periodic structure of PCF can stabilize the otherwise unstable two-dimensional spatial optical solitons. We apply the matrix criterion for stability of these two-parameter solitons, and verify it by direct numerical simulations.

Nonlinear dual-core photonic crystal fiber couplers

We study nonlinear modes of dual-core photonic crystal fiber couplers made of a material with the focusing Kerr nonlinearity. We find numerically the profiles of symmetric, antisymmetric, and asymmetric nonlinear modes, and analyze all-optical switching based on instability of the symmetric mode. We also describe elliptic spatial solitons controlled by the waveguide boundaries.

Square vortex solitons with a large angular momentum

We show the existence of square shaped optical vortices with a large value of the angular momentum hosted in finite size laser beams which propagate in nonlinear media with a cubic-quintic nonlinearity. The light profiles take the form of rings with sharp boundaries and variable sizes depending on the power carried. Our stability analysis shows that these light distributions remain stable when propagate, probably for unlimited values of the angular momentum, provided the hosting beam is wide enough. This happens if the peak amplitude approaches a critical value which only depends on the nonlinear refractive index of the material. A variational approach allows us to calculate the main parameters involved. Our results add extra support to the concept of surface tension of light beams that can be considered as a trace of the existence of a liquid of light.

Single- and double-vortex vector solitons in self-focusing nonlinear media

We study two-component spatial optical solitons carrying an angular momentum and propagating in a self-focusing saturable nonlinear medium. When one of the components is small, such vector solitons can be viewed as a self-trapped vortex beam that guides either the fundamental or first-order guided mode, and they are classified as single- and double-vortex vector solitons. For such composite vortex beams, we demonstrate that a large-amplitude guided mode can stabilize the ring-like vortex beam which usually decays due to azimuthal modulational instability. We identify different types of these vector vortex solitons and demonstrate both vortex bistability and mutual stabilization effect.

Stabilized vortex solitons in layered Kerr media

In this letter we demonstrate the possibility of stabilizing beams with angular momentum propagating in Kerr media. Large propagation distances without filamentation can be achieved in layered media with alternating focusing and defocusing nonlinearities. Stronger stabilization can be obtained with the addition of an incoherent beam.

Spatial optical solitons supported by mutual focusing

We study composite spatial optical solitons supported by two-wave mutual focusing induced by cross-phase modulation in Kerr-like nonlinear media. We find the families of both single- and two-hump solitons and discuss their properties and stability. We also reveal remarkable similarities between recently predicted holographic solitons in photorefractive media and parametric solitons in quadratic nonlinear crystals.
