Neutrino Masses from an A4 Symmetry in Holographic Composite Higgs Models

We show that holographic composite Higgs Models with a discrete A4 symmetry naturally predict hierarchical charged lepton masses and an approximate tri-bimaximal lepton mixing with the correct scale of neutrino masses. They also satisfy current constraints from electroweak precision tests, lepton flavor violation and lepton mixing in a large region of parameter space. Two phenomenologically relevant features arise in these models. First, an extra suppression on the lepton Yukawa couplings makes the tau lepton more composite than naively expected from its mass. As a consequence new light leptonic resonances, with masses as low as few hundreds of GeV, large couplings to tau and a very characteristic collider phenomenology, are quite likely. Second, the discrete symmetry A4 together with the model structure provide a double-layer of flavor protection that allows to keep tree-level mediated processes below present experimental limits. One-loop processes violating lepton flavor, like mu -> e gamma, may be however observable at future experiments.

Warped 5-Dimensional Models: Phenomenological Status and Experimental Prospects

Warped 5-dimensional models, based on the original Randall-Sundrum geometry, have been extended beyond their initial purpose of resolving the gauge hierarchy problem. Over the past decade, various ingredients have been added to their basic structure in order to provide natural and predictive models of flavor and also to address existing constraints from precision data. In this review, we examine the theoretical and experimental status of realistic models that accommodate current data, while addressing the hierarchy and flavor puzzles of the Standard Model. We also discuss the prospects for future discovery of the TeV-scale Kaluza-Klein states that are predicted to emerge in these models, and outline some of the challenges that the detection of such particles pose for experiments at the Large Hadron Collider.

Bulk Fermions in Soft Wall Models

We discuss the implementation of bulk fermions in soft wall models. The introduction of a position dependent bulk mass allows for a well defined Kaluza-Klein expansion for bulk fermions. The realization of flavor and the contribution to electroweak precision observables are shown to be very similar to the hard wall case. The bounds from electroweak precision test are however milder with gauge boson Kaluza-Klein modes as light as $\sim 1.5$ TeV compatible with current experimental bounds.

Bulk Fermions in Warped Models with a Soft Wall

We study bulk fermions in models with warped extra dimensions in the presence of a soft wall. Fermions can acquire a position dependent bulk Dirac mass that shields them from the deep infrared, allowing for a systematic expansion in which electroweak symmetry breaking effects are treated perturbatively. Using this expansion, we analyze properties of bulk fermions in the soft wall background. These properties include the realization of non-trivial boundary conditions that simulate the ones commonly used in hard wall models, the analysis of the flavor structure of the model and the implications of a heavy top. We implement a soft wall model of electroweak symmetry breaking with custodial symmetry and fermions propagating in the bulk. We find a lower bound on the masses of the first bosonic resonances, after including the effects of the top sector on electroweak precision observables for the first time, of m_{KK} \gtrsim 1-3 TeV at the 95% C.L., depending on the details of the Higgs, and discuss the implications of our results for LHC phenomenology.

Heavy Quarks Above the Top at the Tevatron

Recent developments in models with warped extra dimensions have opened new possibilities for vector-like quark studies at hadron colliders. These new vector-like quarks can mix sizably with light Standard Model quarks without violating low energy constraints. We perform a model-independent analysis to determine the Tevatron reach in the search for new quarks. We find that the Tevatron has great potential to observe such quarks via their electroweak single production due to their mixing with valence quarks. With 4 (8) fb-1 integrated luminosity, one may reach a 5σstatistical significance for a heavy quark of mass 580 (630) GeV if the heavy quark-Standard Model quark mixing parameter is order one.

Realistic Composite Higgs Models

We study the role of fermionic resonances in realistic composite Higgs models. We consider the low energy effective description of a model in which the Higgs arises as the pseudo-Goldstone boson of an SO(5)/SO(4) global symmetry breaking pattern. Assuming that only fermionic resonances are present below the cut-off of our effective theory, we perform a detailed analysis of the electroweak constraints on such a model. This includes the exact one-loop calculation of the T parameter and the anomalous Zbb coupling for arbitrary new fermions and couplings. Other relevant observables, like b to s gamma and Delta B=2 processes have also been examined. We find that, while minimal models are difficult to make compatible with electroweak precision tests, models with several fermionic resonances, such as the ones that appear in the spectrum of viable composite Higgs models from warped extra dimensions, are fully realistic in a large region of parameter space. These fermionic resonances could be the first observable signature of the model at the LHC.

Minimal Flavor Protection: A New Flavor Paradigm in Warped Models

We propose a new flavor paradigm for models with warped extra dimensions. The idea is to impose the minimal amount of flavor protection to make warped models compatible with all current flavor and electroweak precision constraints. We discuss a particular realization of this minimal flavor protection in the quark sector, by means of a flavor symmetry acting on the right handed down sector. Hierarchical quark masses and mixing angles are naturally reproduced through wave function localization, and flavor violating processes are predicted, in the absence of large brane kinetic terms for the right handed down quarks, below but not too far from current experimental limits in several channels. With this new flavor pattern, models with warped extra dimensions can be accessible through direct production of new resonances at the LHC and also through precision flavor experiments.

Dark Matter and Electroweak Symmetry Breaking in Models with Warped Extra Dimensions

We show that a discrete exchange symmetry can give rise to realistic dark matter candidates in models with warped extra dimensions. We show how to realize our construction in a variety of models with warped extra dimensions and study in detail a realistic model of Gauge-Higgs Unification/composite Higgs in which the observed amount of dark matter is naturally reproduced. In this model, a realistic pattern of electroweak symmetry breaking typically occurs in a region of parameter space in which the fit to the electroweak precision observables improves, the Higgs is heavier than the experimental bound and new light quark resonances are predicted. We also quantify the fine-tuning of such scenarios, and discuss in which sense Gauge-Higgs Unification models result in a natural theory of electroweak symmetry breaking.

Electroweak constraints on warped models with custodial symmetry

It has been recently argued that realistic models with warped extra dimensions can have Kaluza-Klein particles accessible at the Large Hadron Collider if a custodial symmetry, SU(2)_V \times P_{LR}, is used to protect the T parameter and the coupling of the left-handed bottom quark to the Z gauge boson. In this article we emphasize that such a symmetry implies that the loop corrections to both the T parameter and the Z b_L \bar{b}_L coupling are calculable. In general, these corrections are correlated, can be sizable, and should be considered to determine the allowed parameter space region in models with warped extra dimensions and custodial symmetry, including Randall-Sundrum models with a fundamental Higgs, models of gauge-Higgs unification and Higgsless models. As an example, we derive the constraints that arise on a representative model of gauge-Higgs unification from a global fit to the precision electroweak observables. A scan over the parameter space typically leads to a lower bound on the Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gauge bosons of about 2-3 TeV, depending on the configuration. In the fermionic sector one can have Kaluza-Klein excitations with masses of a few hundred GeV. We present the constraints on these light fermions from recent Tevatron searches, and explore interesting discovery channels at the LHC.

Self-accelerating Warped Braneworlds

Braneworld models with induced gravity have the potential to replace dark energy as the explanation for the current accelerating expansion of the Universe. The original model of Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati (DGP) demonstrated the existence of a ``self--accelerating'' branch of background solutions, but suffered from the presence of ghosts. We present a new large class of braneworld models which generalize the DGP model. Our models have negative curvature in the bulk, allow a second brane, and have general brane tensions and localized curvature terms. We exhibit three different kinds of ghosts, associated to the graviton zero mode, the radion, and the longitudinal components of massive graviton modes. The latter two species occur in the DGP model, for negative and positive brane tension respectively. In our models, we find that the two kinds of DGP ghosts are tightly correlated with each other, but are not always linked to the feature of self--acceleration. Our models are a promising laboratory for understanding the origins and physical meaning of braneworld ghosts, and perhaps for eliminating them altogether.

Light Kaluza-Klein States in Randall-Sundrum Models with Custodial SU(2)

We consider Randall-Sundrum scenarios based on SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R and a discrete parity exchanging L with R. The custodial and parity symmetries can be used to make the tree level contribution to the T parameter and the anomalous couplings of the bottom quark to the Z very small. We show that the resulting quantum numbers typically induce a negative T parameter at one loop that, together with the positive value of the S parameter, restrict considerably these models. There are nevertheless regions of parameter space that successfully reproduce the fit to electroweak precision observables with light Kaluza-Klein excitations accessible at colliders. We consider models of gauge-Higgs unification that implement the custodial and parity symmetries and find that the EW data singles out a very well defined region in parameter space. In this region one typically finds light gauge boson Kaluza-Klein excitations as well as light SU(2)_L singlet, and sometimes also doublet, fermionic states, that mix with the top quark, and may yield interesting signatures at future colliders.

Effective description of brane terms in extra dimensions

We study how theories defined in (extra-dimensional) spaces with localized defects can be described perturbatively by effective field theories in which the width of the defects vanishes. These effective theories must incorporate a ``classical'' renormalization, and we propose a renormalization prescription a la dimensional regularization for codimension 1, which can be easily used in phenomenological applications. As a check of the validity of this setting, we compare some general predictions of the renormalized effective theory with those obtained in a particular ultraviolet completion based on deconstruction.

Revamped Braneworld Gravity

Gravity in five-dimensional braneworld backgrounds often exhibits problematic features, including kinetic ghosts, strong coupling, and the vDVZ discontinuity. These problems are an obstacle to producing and analyzing braneworld models with interesting and potentially observable modifications of 4d gravity. We examine these problems in a general AdS_5/AdS_4 setup with two branes and localized curvature from arbitrary brane kinetic terms. We use the interval approach and an explicit ``straight'' gauge-fixing. We compute the complete quadratic gauge-fixed effective 4d action, as well as the leading cubic order corrections. We compute the exact Green's function for gravity as seen on the brane. In the full parameter space, we exhibit the regions which avoid kinetic ghosts and tachyons. We give a general formula for the strong coupling scale, i.e. the energy scale at which the linearized treatment of gravity breaks down, for relevant regions of the parameter space. We show how the vDVZ discontinuity can be naturally but nontrivially avoided by ultralight graviton modes. We present a direct comparison of warping versus localized curvature in terms of their effects on graviton mode couplings. We exhibit the first example of DGP-like crossover behavior in a general warped setup.

Constraining Inverse Curvature Gravity with Supernovae

We show that the current accelerated expansion of the Universe can be explained without resorting to dark energy. Models of generalized modified gravity, with inverse powers of the curvature can have late time accelerating attractors without conflicting with solar system experiments. We have solved the Friedman equations for the full dynamical range of the evolution of the Universe. This allows us to perform a detailed analysis of Supernovae data in the context of such models that results in an excellent fit. Hence, inverse curvature gravity models represent an example of phenomenologically viable models in which the current acceleration of the Universe is driven by curvature instead of dark energy. If we further include constraints on the current expansion rate of the Universe from the Hubble Space Telescope and on the age of the Universe from globular clusters, we obtain that the matter content of the Universe is 0.07 <= omega_m <= 0.21 (95% Confidence). Hence the inverse curvature gravity models considered can not explain the dynamics of the Universe just with a baryonic matter component.

Unconventional cosmology on the (thick) brane

We consider the cosmology of a thick codimension 1 brane. We obtain the matching conditions leading to the cosmological evolution equations and show that when one includes matter with a pressure component along the extra dimension in the brane energy-momentum tensor, the cosmology is of non-standard type. In particular one can get acceleration when a dust of non-relativistic matter particles is the only source for the (modified) Friedman equation. Our equations would seem to violate the conservation of energy-momentum from a 4D perspective, but in 5D the energy-momentum is conserved. One could write down an effective conserved 4D energy-momentum tensor attaching a ``dark energy'' component to the energy-momentum tensor of matter that has pressure along the extra dimension. This extra component could, on a cosmological scale, be interpreted as matter-coupled quintessence. We comment on the effective 4D description of this effect in terms of the time evolution of a scalar field (the 5D radion) coupled to this kind of matter.

Gravity on codimension 2 brane worlds

We compute the matching conditions for a general thick codimension 2 brane, a necessary previous step towards the investigation of gravitational phenomena in codimension 2 braneworlds. We show that, provided the brane is weakly curved, they are specified by the integral in the extra dimensions of the brane energy-momentum, independently of its detailed internal structure. These general matching conditions can then be used as boundary conditions for the bulk solution. By evaluating Einstein equations at the brane boundary we are able to write an evolution equation for the induced metric on the brane depending only on physical brane parameters and the bulk energy-momentum tensor. We particularise to a cosmological metric and show that a realistic cosmology can be obtained in the simplest case of having just a non-zero cosmological constant in the bulk. We point out several parallelisms between this case and the codimension 1 brane worlds in an AdS space.

Discrete regularisation of localised kinetic terms

We investigate the behaviour of 5d models with general brane kinetic terms by discretising the extra dimension. We show that in the continuum limit the Kaluza-Klein masses and wave functions are in general nonanalytic in the coefficients of brane terms.
