Particle and Gravitational Wave Probes of Minimal Seesaw Neutrinos

Observable gravitational waves (GWs) from first-order phase transitions (FOPTs) can coexist with distinct particle physics signatures. These include same-sign dilepton plus four~jet events at colliders, such as $e^+ e^-/μ^+μ^- \to \ell^\pm \ell^\pm 4j$, neutrinoless double beta decay, as well as charged lepton flavor violating (cLFV) processes such as $μ\to e γ$. We explore this synergy within the minimal low-scale linear seesaw model. This framework successfully reproduces neutrino oscillation data, providing a direct avenue to probe the neutrino mass ordering and Majorana nature at colliders. Crucially, the FOPT responsible for the GW background is driven by a leptophilic Higgs doublet, establishing a direct link between early-universe cosmology and terrestrial laboratory experiments.

The symmetry approach to quark and lepton masses and mixing

The Standard Model lacks an organizing principle to describe quark and lepton ``flavours''. Neutrino oscillation experiments show that leptons mix very differently from quarks, adding a major challenge to the flavour puzzle. We briefly sketch the seesaw and the dark-matter-mediated ``scotogenic'' neutrino mass generation approaches. We discuss the limitations of popular neutrino mixing patterns and examine the possibility that they arise from symmetry, giving a bottom-up approach to residual flavour and CP symmetries. We show how such family and/or CP symmetries can yield novel, viable and predictive mixing patterns. Model-independent ways to predict lepton mixing and neutrino mass sum rules are reviewed. We also discuss UV-complete flavour theories in four and more space-time dimensions. As benchmark examples we present an $A_4$ scotogenic construction with trimaximal mixing pattern TM2 and another with $S_4$ flavour symmetry and generalized CP symmetry. Higher-dimensional flavour completions are also briefly discussed, such as 5-D warped flavordynamics with a $T^\prime$ symmetry yielding a TM1 mixing pattern, detectable neutrinoless double beta decay rates and a very good global fit of flavour observables. We also mention 6-D orbifolds as a way to fix the structure of the 4-D family symmetry. We give a scotogenic benchmark orbifold model predicting the ``golden'' quark-lepton mass relation, stringent neutrino oscillation parameter regions, and an excellent global flavour fit, including quark observables. Finally, we discuss promising recent progress in tackling the flavor issue through the use of modular symmetries.

Leptonic neutral-current probes in a short-distance DUNE-like setup

Precision measurements of neutrino-electron scattering may provide a viable way to test the non-minimal form of the charged and neutral current weak interactions within a hypothetical near-detector setup for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). Although low-statistics, these processes are clean and provide information complementing the results derived from oscillation studies. They could shed light on the scale of neutrino mass generation in low-scale seesaw schemes.

Trimaximal neutrino mixing from scotogenic $A_4$ family symmetry

We propose a flavour theory of leptons implementing an $A_4$ family symmetry. Our scheme provides a simple way to derive trimaximal neutrino mixing from first principles, leading to simple and testable predictions for neutrino mixing and CP violation. Dark matter mediates neutrino mass generation, as in the simplest scotogenic model.

Electroweak Breaking and Higgs Boson Profile in the Simplest Linear Seesaw Model

We examine the simplest realization of the linear seesaw mechanism within the Standard Model gauge structure. Besides the standard scalar doublet, there are two lepton-number-carrying scalars, a nearly inert SU2 doublet and a singlet. Neutrino masses result from the spontaneous violation of lepton number, implying the existence of a Nambu-Goldstone boson. Such "majoron" would be copiously produced in stars, leading to stringent astrophysical constraints. We study the profile of the Higgs bosons in this model, including their effective couplings to the vector bosons and their invisible decay branching ratios. A consistent electroweak symmetry breaking pattern emerges with a compressed spectrum of scalars in which the "Standard Model" Higgs boson can have a sizeable invisible decay into the invisible majorons.

Dirac neutrinos from Peccei-Quinn symmetry: a fresh look at the axion

We show that a very simple solution to the strong CP problem naturally leads to Dirac neutrinos. Small effective neutrino masses emerge from a type I Dirac seesaw mechanism. Neutrino mass limits probe the axion parameters in regions currently inaccessible to conventional searches.

Inverse seesaw mechanism with compact supersymmetry: enhanced naturalness and light super-partners

We consider the supersymmetric inverse seesaw mechanism for neutrino mass generation within the context of a low energy effective theory where supersymmetry is broken geometrically in an extra dimensional theory. It is shown that the effective scale characterizing the resulting compact supersymmetric spectrum can be as low as 500-600 GeV for moderate values of $\tanβ$. The potentially large neutrino Yukawa couplings, naturally present in inverse seesaw schemes, enhance the Higgs mass and allow the super-partners to be lighter than in compact supersymmetry without neutrino masses. The inverse seesaw structure also implies a novel spectrum profile and couplings, in which the lightest supersymmetric particle can be an admixture of isodoublet and isosinglet sneutrinos. Dedicated collider as well as dark matter studies should take into account such specific features.

$U(1)_{B_3-3L_μ}$ gauge symmetry as a simple description of $b\to s$ anomalies

We present a simple $U(1)_{B_3-3L_μ}$ gauge Standard Model extension that can easily account for the anomalies in $R(K)$ and $R(K^*)$ reported by LHCb. The model is economical in its setup and particle content. Among the Standard Model fermions, only the third generation quark family and the second generation leptons transform non-trivially under the new $U(1)_{B_3-3L_μ}$ symmetry. This leads to lepton non-universality and flavor changing neutral currents involving the second and third quark families. We discuss the relevant experimental constraints and some implications.

Flavour-symmetric type-II Dirac neutrino seesaw mechanism

We propose a Standard Model extension with underlying A4 flavour symmetry where small Dirac neutrino masses arise from a Type-II seesaw mechanism. The model predicts the "golden" flavour-dependent bottom-tau mass relation, requires an inverted neutrino mass ordering and non-maximal atmospheric mixing angle. Using the latest neutrino oscillation global fit we derive restrictions on the oscillation parameters, such as a correlation between Dirac CP phase and the lightest neutrino mass.

Naturally light neutrinos in $Diracon$ model

We propose a simple model for Dirac neutrinos where the smallness of neutrino mass follows from a parameter $κ$ whose absence enhances the symmetry of the theory. The symmetry breaking is performed by a two-doublet Higgs sector supplemented by an extra gauge singlet scalar, realizing an accidental global $U(1)$ symmetry. Its spontaneous breaking at the few TeV scale leads to a physical Nambu-Goldstone boson - the $Diracon$, denoted $\mathcal{D}$ - which is restricted by astrophysics and induces invisible Higgs decays $h\to \mathcal{D} \mathcal {D}$. The scheme provides a rich, yet very simple reference scenario for symmetry breaking studies at colliders such as the LHC.

Two-loop Dirac neutrino mass and WIMP dark matter

We propose a "scotogenic" mechanism relating small neutrino mass and cosmological dark matter. Neutrinos are Dirac fermions with masses arising only in two--loop order through the sector responsible for dark matter. Two triality symmetries ensure both dark matter stability and strict lepton number conservation at higher orders. A global spontaneously broken U(1) symmetry leads to a physical $Diracon$ that induces invisible Higgs decays which add up to the Higgs to dark matter mode. This enhances sensitivities to spin-independent WIMP dark matter search below $m_h/2$.

Realistic $\mathrm{SU(3)_c \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X}$ model with a type II Dirac neutrino seesaw mechanism

Here we propose a realistic $\mathrm{SU(3)_c \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X}$ electroweak gauge model with enlarged Higgs sector. The scheme allows for the natural implementation of a type II seesaw mechanism for Dirac neutrinos, while charged lepton and quark masses are reproduced in a natural way thanks to the presence of new scalars. The new $\mathrm{SU(3)_c \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X}$ energy scale characterizing neutrino mass generation could be accessible to the current LHC experiments.

A flavour physics scenario for the 750 GeV diphoton anomaly

A simple variant of a realistic flavour symmetry scheme for fermion masses and mixings provides a possible interpretation of the diphoton anomaly as an electroweak singlet "flavon". The existence of TeV scale vector-like T-quarks required to provide adequate values for CKM parameters can also naturally account for the diphoton anomaly. Correlations between $V_{ub}$ and $V_{cb}$ with the vector-like T-quark mass can be predicted. Should the diphoton anomaly survive in a future Run, our proposed interpretation can also be tested in upcoming B and LHC studies.

Are the B decay anomalies related to neutrino oscillations?

Neutrino oscillations are solidly established, with a hint of CP violation just emerging. Similarly, there are hints of lepton universality violation in $b \to s$ transitions at the level of $2.6 σ$. By assuming that the unitary transformation between weak and mass charged leptons equals the leptonic mixing matrix measured in neutrino oscillation experiments, we predict several lepton flavor violating (LFV) B meson decays. We are led to the tantalizing possibility that some LFV branching ratios for B decays correlate with the leptonic CP phase $δ$ characterizing neutrino oscillations. Moreover, we also consider implications for $\ell_i \to \ell_j \ell_k \ell_k$ decays.

Predicting charged lepton flavor violation from 3-3-1 gauge symmetry

The simplest realization of the inverse seesaw mechanism in a $SU(3)_C \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X$ gauge theory offers striking flavor correlations between rare charged lepton flavor violating decays and the measured neutrino oscillations parameters. The predictions follow from the gauge structure itself without the need for any flavor symmetry. Such tight complementarity between charged lepton flavor violation and oscillations renders the scenario strictly testable.

Neutrino mass and invisible Higgs decays at the LHC

The discovery of the Higgs boson suggests that also neutrinos get their mass from spontaneous symmetry breaking. In the simplest ungauged lepton number scheme, the Standard Model (SM) Higgs has now two other partners: a massive CP-even, as well as the massless Nambu-Goldstone boson, called majoron. For weak-scale breaking of lepton number the invisible decays of the CP- even Higgs bosons to the majoron lead to potentially copious sources of events with large missing energy. Using LHC results we study how the constraints on invisible decays of the Higgs boson restrict the relevant parameters, substantially extending those previously derived from LEP and shedding light on spontaneous lepton number violation.

Small neutrino masses and gauge coupling unification

The physics responsible for gauge coupling unification may also induce small neutrino masses. We propose a novel gauge mediated radiative seesaw mechanism for calculable neutrino masses. These arise from quantum corrections mediated by new $SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_X$ (3-3-1) gauge bosons and the physics driving gauge coupling unification. Gauge couplings unify for a 3-3-1 scale in the TeV range, making the model directly testable at the LHC.

Relating quarks and leptons with the T7 flavour group

In this letter we present a model for quarks and leptons based on T7 as flavour symmetry, predicting a canonical mass relation between charged leptons and down-type quarks proposed earlier. Neutrino masses are generated through a Type-I seesaw mechanism, with predicted correlations between the atmospheric mixing angle and neutrino masses. Compatibility with oscillation results lead to lower bounds for the lightest neutrino mass as well as for the neutrinoless double beta decay rates, even for normal neutrino mass hierarchy.
