Classification of effective operators for interactions between the Standard Model and dark matter

We construct a basis for effective operators responsible for interactions between the Standard Model and a dark sector composed of particles with spin less or equal to 1. Redundant operators are eliminated using dim-4 equations of motion. We consider simple scenarios where the dark matter components are stabilized against decay by Z2 symmetries. We determine operators which are loop-generated within an underlying theory and those that are potentially tree-level generated.

Constraints on Two-Component Dark Matter

We study 'Higgs Portal' 2-component Dark Matter scenario with two interacting cold Dark Matter (DM) candidates: a neutral scalar singlet ($φ$) and a neutral Majorana fermion ($ν$). The relic abundance of $φ$ and $ν$ is found assuming thermal DM production and solving the Boltzmann equations. We scan over the parameter space of the model to determine regions consistent with the WMAP data for DM relic abundance and the XENON100 direct detection limits for the DM-nucleus cross section.

Two-Component Dark Matter

We study an extension of the Standard Model (SM) with two interacting cold Dark Matter (DM) candidates: a neutral Majorana fermion ($ν$) and a neutral scalar singlet ($φ$). The scalar $φ$ interacts with the SM through the "Higgs portal" coupling while $ν$ at the tree level interacts only with $φ$ through Yukawa interactions. The relic abundance of $ν$ and $φ$ is found by solving the Boltzmann equations numerically; for the case $m_ν> m_φ$ we also derive a reliable approximate analytical solution. Effects of the interaction between the two DM components are discussed. A scan over the parameter space is performed to determine the regions consistent with the WMAP data for DM relic abundance, and with the XENON100 direct detection limits for the DM-nucleus cross section. We find that although a large region of the parameter space is allowed by the WMAP constraints, the XENON100 data severely restricts the parameter space. Taking into account only amplitudes generated at the tree level one finds three allowed regions for the scalar mass: $m_φ\sim 62.5$ GeV (corresponding to the vicinity of the Higgs boson resonance responsible for $φφ$ annihilation into SM particles), $m_φ\simeq 130-140$ GeV and $m_φ\gesim 3 $TeV. 1-loop induced $ν$-nucleon scattering has been also calculated and discussed. A possibility of DM direct detection by the CREST-II experiment was considered.

Thick-Brane Cosmology

We search for time-dependent solutions for the 5-dimensional system of a scalar field canonically coupled to gravity. Time-independent and time-dependent scalar field configurations with the most general homogeneous and isotropic 4D metric are considered. For the case of time-independent scalar field, the time evolution of the scale factor is obtained for different values of the spatial curvature $k=0,\pm 1$. In the case of time-dependent scalar field, two classes of solutions are discussed and an extension of the superpotential formalism is proposed.

Lepton Number Violation and Scalar Searches at the LHC

We review the SM extensions with scalar multiplets including doubly-charged components eventually observable as di-leptonic resonances at the LHC. Special emphasis is payed to the limits on LNV implied by doubly-charged scalar searches at the LHC, and to the characterization of the multiplet doubly-charged scalars belong to if they are observed to decay into same-sign charged lepton pairs.

Cosmology of Multi-Singlet-Scalar Extensions of the Standard Model

An extension of the Standard Model by extra scalar singlets was considered. Theoretical (unitarity, vacuum stability, triviality) and cosmological (dark matter relic abundance, direct detection experiments, constraints on dark matter self-interaction) constraints were discussed.

Discriminating between lepton number violating scalars using events with four and three charged leptons at the LHC

Many Standard Model extensions predict doubly-charged scalars; in particular, all models with resonances in charged lepton-pair channels with non-vanishing lepton number; if these are pair produced at the LHC, the observation of their decay into $l^\pm l^\pm W^\mp W^\mp$ will be necessary in order to establish their lepton-number violating character, which is generally not straightforward. Nonetheless, the analysis of events containing four charged leptons (including scalar decays into one or two taus as well as into W bosons) makes it possible to determine whether the doubly-charged excitation belongs to a multiplet with weak isospin T = 0, 1/2, 1, 3/2 or 2 (assuming there are no excitations with charge > 2); though discriminating between the isosinglet and isodoublet cases is possible only if charged-current events cannot produce the doubly-charged isosinglet.

Higgs-Boson Couplings Beyond the Standard Model

The implications for Higgs decays of potential new physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) are considered in the context of effective field theory, assuming perturbative decoupling. Using existing data to restrict which dimension-six operators can arise, it is shown that, given the existing experimental constraints, only a small number of operators can affect the decays of the Higgs: those that may be potentially-tree-generated (PTG) and modify the Higgs-fermion couplings, or those that may be loop-generated (LG) that modify the Higgs couplings to photon-photon, Z-photon and gluon-gluon. Implications for specific branching ratios are given in terms of the coefficients of various dimension six operators. In such a scenario, the ratios Width(H -> WW*)/Width(H -> ZZ*) and Width(H -> W l nu)/Width(H -> Z l l) equal to their standard model values to an accuracy of O(1%) or less.

Distinguishing between lepton number violating scalars at the LHC

Scalars with lepton number violating interactions decaying into lepton pairs, as those mediating the see-saw of type II, always include doubly-charged components. If these are observed at the LHC, their electro-weak quantum numbers can be determined through their leptonic decays in pair and single production.

Multi-Scalar-Singlet Extension of the Standard Model - the Case for Dark Matter and an Invisible Higgs Boson

We consider a simple extension of the Standard Model by the addition of N real scalar gauge singlets $\vp$ that are candidates for Dark Matter. By collecting theoretical and experimental constraints we determine the space of allowed parameters of the model. The possibility of ameliorating the little hierarchy problem within the multi-singlet model is discussed. The Spergel-Steinhardt solution of the Dark Matter density cusp problem is revisited. It is shown that fitting the recent CRESST-II data for Dark Matter nucleus scattering implies that the standard Higgs boson decays predominantly into pairs of Dark Matter scalars. It that case discovery of the Higgs boson at LHC and Tevatron is impossible. The most likely mass of the dark scalars is in the range 15 GeV $\lsim \mvp \lsim$ 50 GeV with $BR(h \to \vp\vp)$ up to 96%.

Effective Lagrangian approach to neutrinoless double beta decay and neutrino masses

Neutrinoless double beta ($0νββ$) decay can in general produce electrons of either chirality, in contrast with the minimal Standard Model (SM) extension with only the addition of the Weinberg operator, which predicts two left-handed electrons in the final state. We classify the lepton number violating (LNV) effective operators with two leptons of either chirality but no quarks, ordered according to the magnitude of their contribution to \znbb decay. We point out that, for each of the three chirality assignments, $e_Le_L, e_Le_R$ and $e_Re_R$, there is only one LNV operator of the corresponding type to lowest order, and these have dimensions 5, 7 and 9, respectively. Neutrino masses are always induced by these extra operators but can be delayed to one or two loops, depending on the number of RH leptons entering in the operator. Then, the comparison of the $0νββ$ decay rate and neutrino masses should indicate the effective scenario at work, which confronted with the LHC searches should also eventually decide on the specific model elected by nature. We also list the SM additions generating these operators upon integration of the heavy modes, and discuss simple realistic examples of renormalizable theories for each case.

A realistic model of neutrino masses with a large neutrinoless double beta decay rate

The minimal Standard Model extension with the Weinberg operator does accommodate the observed neutrino masses and mixing, but predicts a neutrinoless double beta ($0νββ$) decay rate proportional to the effective electron neutrino mass, which can be then arbitrarily small within present experimental limits. However, in general $0νββ$ decay can have an independent origin and be near its present experimental bound; whereas neutrino masses are generated radiatively, contributing negligibly to $0νββ$ decay. We provide a realization of this scenario in a simple, well defined and testable model, with potential LHC effects and calculable neutrino masses, whose two-loop expression we derive exactly. We also discuss the connection of this model to others that have appeared in the literature, and remark on the significant differences that result from various choices of quantum number assignments and symmetry assumptions. In this type of models lepton flavor violating rates are also preferred to be relatively large, at the reach of foreseen experiments. Interestingly enough, in our model this stands for a large third mixing angle, $\sin^2θ_{13} \gtrsim 0.008$, when $μ\rightarrow eee$ is required to lie below its present experimental limit.

Vector-Boson-Induced Neutrino Mass

One-loop radiative Majorana neutrino masses through the exchange of scalars have been considered for many years. We show for the first time how such a one-loop mass is also possible through the exchange of vector gauge bosons. It is based on a simple variation of a recently proposed $SU(2)_N$ extension of the standard model, where a vector boson is a candidate for the dark matter of the Universe.

Periodic thick-brane configurations and their stability

I investigate models with scalar fields in 5 dimensions that exhibit thick-brane configurations with a non-trivial metric. I show that an appropriate coupling to the scalar curvature allows for periodic configurations, which, however, are unstable under small harmonic perturbations. A model for stabilizing these configurations is proposed and discussed.

Note on Custodial Symmetry in the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

We present a simple and transparent method to study custodial symmetry in the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model. The method allows to formulate the basis independent, sufficient and necessary, conditions for the custodial symmetry of the scalar potential. The relation between the custodial transformation and CP is discussed and clarified.

Cosmology with Unparticles

We discuss cosmological consequences of the existence of physics beyond the standard model that exhibits Banks-Zaks and unparticle behavior in the UV and IR respectively. We first derive the equation of state for unparticles and use it to obtain the temperature dependence of the corresponding energy and entropy densities. We then formulate the Boltzmann and Kubo equations for both the unparticles and the Banks-Zaks particles, and use these results to determine the equilibrium conditions between the standard model and the new physics. We conclude by obtaining the constraints on the effective number of degrees of freedom of unparticles imposed by Big-Bang nucleosynthesis.

A model for right-handed neutrino magnetic moments

A simple extension of the Standard Model providing Majorana magnetic moments to right-handed neutrinos is presented. The model contains, in addition to the Standard Model particles and right-handed neutrinos, just a singly charged scalar and a vector-like charged fermion. The phenomenology of the model is analysed and its implications in cosmology, astrophysics and lepton flavour violating processes are extracted. If light enough, the charged particles responsible for the right-handed neutrino magnetic moments could copiously be produced at the LHC.
