Resnikoff silver numbers and tilings of the half-line (Dedicated to the memory of H.L.Resnikoff)

Building on work by H.L.Resnikoff we consider (Resnikoff) silver numbers, which generalize the familiar golden number. By definition, a silver number is the largest positive root of a certain polynomial called silver polynomial. In turn, a corresponding companion matrix of a silver polynomial gives rise to a well known construction of inflationary tilings of the (non-negative) real half-line, via an iteration of inflation and substitution. Resnikoff noted for the golden number $ϕ$ that this tiling corresponds to the set of what he called $ϕ$-integers. We generalize this result for a special class of silver numbers, the distinguished silver numbers, by showing that the integers for a distinguished silver number give rise to a tiling, of which we provide a precise description. For the general problem, whether the integers for an arbitrary silver number give rise to a tiling, we cannot give a general answer, but we show that tilings are obtained if and only if the differences of silver integers satisfy a (rather weak looking) non-accumulation condition. If tilings of this type exist for certain (necessarily non-distinguished) silver numbers, they would seem to form a class of inflationary tilings that differs from those obtained by inflation and substitution. In an Appendix we recall necessary notions and -- mostly known -- results, including the inflation-substitution construction principle for (one dimensional) inflationary tilings, in an elementary manner. For the readers' convenience we also collect the pertinent facts about non-negative matrices, thus the construction is accessible with only basic prerequisites from linear algebra and analysis. Finally, in our setting we give a detailed proof of a non-periodicity result that goes back to Penrose.

A duality theorem for harmonic maps into inner symmetric spaces

In this note, we show that for any harmonic map into a non-compact symmetric space one can find naturally a "dual" harmonic map into a compact symmetric space which can be constructed from the same basic data (called "potentials" in the loop group formalism). Locally also the inverse/converse duality theorem holds.

Harmonic maps of finite uniton number into inner symmetric spaces via based normalized extended frames

In this paper, we develop a loop group description of harmonic maps $\mathcal{F}: M \rightarrow G/K$ of finite uniton number, from a Riemann surface $M,$ compact or non-compact, into inner symmetric spaces of compact or non-compact type. As a main result we show that the theory of [Burstall-Guest, Math Ann, 97], largely based on Bruhat cells, can be transformed into the DPW theory which is mainly based on Birkhoff cells. Moreover, it turns out that the potentials constructed in [Burstall-Guest, Math Ann, 97], mainly see section 5, can be used to carry out the DPW procedure which uses essentially the fixed initial condition $e$ at a fixed base point $z_0$. This extends work of Uhlenbeck, Segal, and Burstall-Guest to non-compact inner symmetric spaces as target spaces (as a consequence of a "Duality Theorem"). It also permits to say that there is a 1-1-relation between finite uniton number harmonic maps and normalized potentials of a very specific and very controllable type. In particular, we prove that every harmonic map of finite uniton type from any (compact or non-compact) Riemann surface into any {compact or non-compact} inner symmetric space has a normalized potential taking values in some nilpotent Lie subalgebra, as well as a normalized frame with initial condition identity. This provides a straightforward way to construct all such harmonic maps. We also illustrate the above results exclusively by Willmore surfaces, since this problem is motivated by the study of Willmore two--spheres in spheres.

Algebraic Harmonic Maps, Totally Symmetric Harmonic Maps and a Conjecture

In this paper, we discuss the associated family of harmonic maps $\mathcal{F}: M \rightarrow G/K$ from a Riemann surface $M$ into inner symmetric spaces of compact or non-compact type which are either algebraic or totally symmetric. These notions are the two components of the definition of a harmonic map of finite uniton number, as stated by [2]. We finish this paper by comparing these to notions and by stating a conjecture.

Half-dimensional immersions into the para-complex projective space and Ruh-Vilms type theorems

In this paper we study isometric immersions $f:M^n \to {\mathbb {C}^{\prime}}\!P^n$ of an $n$-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold $M^n$ into the $n$-dimensional para-complex projective space ${\mathbb {C}^{\prime}}\!P^n$. We study the immersion $f$ by means of a lift $\mathfrak f$ of $f$ into a quadric hypersurface in ${S^{2n+1}_{n+1}}$. We find the frame equations and compatibility conditions. We specialize these results to dimension $n = 2$ and a definite metric on $M^2$ in isothermal coordinates and consider the special cases of Lagrangian surface immersions and minimal surface immersions. We characterize surface immersions with special properties in terms of primitive harmonicity of the Gauss maps.

Willmore surfaces in spheres via loop groups: a survey

In the past decades, the authors made some systematic research on global and local properties of Willmore surfaces in terms of the DPW method. In this note we give a survey, mainly including the basic framework of the DPW method for the global geometry of Willmore surfaces via the conformal Gauss map, applications on constructions of Willmore $2$-spheres, characterizations of minimal surfaces, Willmore deformations of Willmore surfaces and Bjoerling problems for Willmore surfaces. Moreover, we also obtained some results on harmonic maps via DPW, including a duality theorem for harmonic maps into an inner non-compact symmetric space and its dual inner compact symmetric space, and harmonic maps of finite uniton type.

Minimal Lagrangian surfaces in $\mathbb{C}P^2$ via the loop group method Part II: The general case

We extend the techniques introduced in \cite{DoMaB1} for contractible Riemann surfaces to construct minimal Lagrangian immersions from arbitrary Riemann surfaces into $\mathbb{C}P^2$ via the loop group method. Based on the potentials of translationally equivariant minimal Lagrangian surfaces, we introduce perturbed equivariant minimal Lagrangian surfaces in $\mathbb{C}P^2$ and construct a class of minimal Lagrangian cylinders. Furthermore, we show that these minimal Lagrangian cylinders approximate Delaunay cylinders with respect to some weighted Wiener norm of the twisted loop group $ΛSU(3)_σ$.

Harmonic maps of finite uniton type into inner symmetric spaces

In this paper, we develop a loop group description of harmonic maps $\mathcal{F}: M \rightarrow G/K$ ``of finite uniton type", from a Riemann surface $M$ into inner symmetric spaces of compact or non-compact type. This develops work of Uhlenbeck, Segal, and Burstall-Guest to non-compact inner symmetric spaces. To be more concrete, we prove that every harmonic map of finite uniton type from any Riemann surface into any compact or non-compact inner symmetric space has a normalized potential taking values in some nilpotent Lie subalgebra, as well as a normalized frame with initial condition identity. This provides a straightforward way to construct all such harmonic maps. We also illustrate the above results exclusively by Willmore surfaces, since this problem is motivated by the study of Willmore two-spheres in spheres.

Minimal surfaces with non-trivial topology in the three-dimensional Heisenberg group

We study symmetric minimal surfaces in the three-dimensional Heisenberg group $\mathrm{Nil}_3$ using the generalized Weierstrass type representation, the so-called loop group method. In particular, we will discuss how to construct minimal surfaces in $\mathrm{Nil}_3$ with non-trivial topology. Moreover, we will classify equivariant minimal surfaces given by one-parameter subgroups of the isometry group $\mathrm{Iso}_{\circ}(\mathrm{Nil}_3)$ of $\mathrm{Nil}_3$.

On symmetric Willmore surfaces in spheres II: the orientation reversing case

In this paper we provide a systematic treatment of Willmore surfaces with orientation reversing symmetries and illustrate the theory by (old and new) examples. We apply our theory to isotropic Willmore two-spheres in $S^4$ and derive a necessary condition for such ( possibly branched) isotropic surfaces to descend to (possibly branched) maps from $\mathbb{R} P^2$ to $S^4$. The Veronese sphere and several other examples of non-branched Willmore immersions from $\mathbb{R} P^2$ to $S^4$ are derived as an illustration of the general theory. The Willmore immersions of $\mathbb{R} P^2$, just mentioned and different from the Veronese sphere, are new to the authors' best knowledge.

Willmore surfaces in spheres: the DPW approach via the conformal Gauss map

The paper builds a DPW approach of Willmore surfaces via conformal Gauss maps. As applications, we provide descriptions of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb R^{n+2}$, isotropic surfaces in $S^4$ and homogeneous Willmore tori via the loop group method. A new example of a Willmore two-sphere in $S^6$ without dual surfaces is also presented.

Survey on real forms of the complex $A_2^{(2)}$-Toda equation and surface theory

The classical result of describing harmonic maps from surfaces into symmetric spaces of reductive Lie groups states that the Maurer-Cartan form with an additional parameter, the so-called loop parameter, is integrable for all values of the loop parameter. As a matter of fact, the same result holds for $k$-symmetric spaces over reductive Lie groups. In this survey we will show that to each of the five different types of real forms for a loop group of $A_2^{(2)}$ there exists a surface class, for which some frame is integrable for all values of the loop parameter if and only if it belongs to one of the surface classes, that is, minimal Lagrangian surfaces in $\mathbb {CP}^2$, minimal Lagrangian surfaces in $\mathbb {CH}^2$, timelike minimal Lagrangian surfaces in $\mathbb {CH}^2_1$, proper definite affine spheres in $\mathbb R^3$ and proper indefinite affine spheres in $\mathbb R^3$, respectively.

Weierstrass-Kenmotsu representation of Willmore surfaces in spheres

A Willmore surface $y:M\rightarrow S^{n+2}$ has a natural harmonic oriented conformal Gauss map $Gr_y:M\rightarrow SO^{+}(1,n+3)/SO(1,3)\times SO(n)$, which maps each point $p\in M$ to its oriented mean curvature 2-sphere at $p$. An easy observation shows that all conformal Gauss maps of Willmore surfaces satisfy a restricted nilpotency condition which will be called "strongly conformally harmonic." The goal of this paper is to characterize those strongly conformally harmonic maps from a Riemann surface $M$ to $SO^+ (1, n + 3)/{SO^+(1, 3) \times SO(n) }$ which are the conformal Gauss maps of some Willmore surface in $S^{n+2}.$ It turns out that generically the condition of being strongly conformally harmonic suffices to be associated to a Willmore surface. The exceptional case will also be discussed.

Classification of Homogeneous Willmore Surfaces in $S^N$

In this note we consider homogeneous Willmore surfaces in $S^{n+2}$. The main result is that a homogeneous Willmore two-sphere is conformally equivalent to a homogeneous minimal two-sphere in $S^{n+2}$, i.e., either a round two-sphere or one of the Borůvka-Veronese 2-spheres in $S^{2m}$. This entails a classification of all Willmore $\mathbb{C} P^1$ in $S^{2m}$. As a second main result we show that there exists no homogeneous Willmore upper-half plane in $S^{n+2}$ and we give, in terms of special constant potentials, a simple loop group characterization of all homogeneous surfaces which have an abelian transitive group.
