Decoherence from ensembles of two-level fluctuators

1/f noise, the major source of dephasing in Josephson qubits, may be produced by an ensemble of two-level systems. Depending on the statistical properties of their distribution, the noise distribution can be Gaussian or non-Gaussian. The latter situation is realized, for instance, when the distribution of coupling strengths has a slowly decaying power-law tail. In this regime questions of self-averaging and sample-to-sample fluctuations become crucial. We study the dephasing process for a class of distribution functions and analyze the self-averaging properties of the results.

Dephasing by a nonstationary classical intermittent noise

We consider a new phenomenological model for a $1/f^μ$ classical intermittent noise and study its effects on the dephasing of a two-level system. Within this model, the evolution of the relative phase between the $|\pm>$ states is described as a continuous time random walk (CTRW). Using renewal theory, we find exact expressions for the dephasing factor and identify the physically relevant various regimes in terms of the coupling to the noise. In particular, we point out the consequences of the non-stationarity and pronounced non-Gaussian features of this noise, including some new anomalous and aging dephasing scenarii.

Nonstationary dephasing of two level systems

We investigate the influence of nonstationary 1/f^mu noise, produced by interacting defects, on a quantum two-level system. Adopting a simple phenomenological model for this noise we describe exactly the corresponding dephasing in various regimes. The nonstationarity and pronounced non-Gaussian features of this noise induce new anomalous dephasing scenarii. Beyond a history-dependent critical coupling strength the dephasing time exhibits a strong dependence on the age of the noise and the decay of coherence is not exponential.

Quantum impurity approach to a coupled qubit problem

We consider a system of two qubits at the ends of a finite length 1D cavity. This problem is mapped onto the double-Kondo model which is also shown to describe the low energy physics of a finite length quantum wire with resonant levels at its ends. At the Toulouse point the ground state energy and the average populations and correlations of the qubits or resonant levels at zero temperature are computed. These results show that the effective interactions between the qubits or resonant levels can be used to probe their associated Kondo length scale.
