q-Askey Deformations of Double-Scaled SYK

We construct families of deformations of the double-scaled SYK (DSSYK) model and investigate their bulk interpretation. We introduce microscopic deformations of the SYK model which, after ensemble averaging and in the double-scaling limit, are described by a transfer matrix encoding the recurrence relations of basic orthogonal polynomials in the q-Askey scheme. For certain families of deformations in the semiclassical limit at finite temperature, the chord number (encoding Krylov complexity) corresponds to the length of an Einstein-Rosen bridge connecting an End-Of-The-World brane to an anti-de Sitter asymptotic boundary. By increasing one of the deformation parameters, the models eventually exhibit discrete energy levels, signaling a new geometric transition in sine dilaton gravity. Via the SYK-Schur duality, Krylov complexity also admits a representation-theoretic interpretation as the spread of the SU(2) spin in the index of an $\mathcal{N}=2$ SU(2) gauge theory. We study the operator algebras of the deformed theories. The algebras can be type II$_1$ or type I$_\infty$ factors, depending on the operators that are included. The entanglement entropy between the type II$_1$ algebras for a pure state manifests as an extremal surface through the Ryu-Takayanagi formula. We discuss connections between our results and the emergence of baby universes in the bulk.

A spin on Hagedorn temperatures and string stars

We discuss the correspondence between highly excited strings and black holes in the presence of angular momentum. At fixed imaginary angular velocity $\nu$, we show that free strings exhibit a Hagedorn instability due to a thermal-winding mode turning tachyonic. This allows us to determine the exact Hagedorn temperature $\beta_H(\nu)$ for bosonic, type II, and heterotic strings. Using the effective field theory for the thermal-winding mode around the $\nu$-dependent background, we find a novel `rotating string star' saddle (perturbatively in the angular velocity) and study its properties. This configuration describes a self-gravitating bound state of highly excited rotating strings. As in the non-rotating case, the saddle is qualitatively shown to interpolate between the rotating strings phase and a rotating black hole. We also comment on the implications of these results for anti-de Sitter space.

Comments on Class S(YK)

We present a DSSYK-like interpretation of the Schur half-indices of $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(2)$ gauge theories with matter, in the presence of fundamental Wilson lines. The Schur half-indices of these theories can be understood as transition amplitudes in a non-vacuum sector of ordinary DSSYK. In the language of chord diagrams, the half-indices are obtained by summing over diagrams with special segments, which correspond to coherent states of the $q$-oscillator algebra. In addition, we show that the Schur half-index of $SU(2)$ gauge theory with $n_F=4$ fundamental half-hypermultiplets corresponds to the partition function of a particle on the quantum disk.

Simulations of Magnetic Monopole Collisions

In this paper, we investigate the scattering of BPS magnetic monopoles through numerical simulations. We present an ansatz for various multi-monopole configurations suitable for analyzing monopole scattering processes. Our study includes planar scattering scenarios involving two, three, and four monopoles, as well as non-planar processes where three and four monopoles form intermediate tetrahedral and cubic states, respectively. Our observations align with the theoretical predictions of the moduli space approximation. Furthermore, we extend our analysis to relativistic velocities and explore parameters beyond the BPS limit.

Twisted times, the Schwarzian and its deformations in DSSYK

The IR dynamics of SYK is that of the Schwarzian theory, the effective theory of broken reparametrization invariance. In the double scaling limit, SYK is completely solvable by chord diagrams, whose generating functional is a bilocal Liouville theory. At low temperatures a set of modes in this description becomes soft. We interpret them as reparametrization of some twisted time coordinates, and show explicitly that they lead to the nonlinear Schwarzian theory. We further consider deformations of the theory in the double scaling limit, giving rise to diagrams with multiple species of chords, and show that the generating functional is now a Liouville theory with multiple fields. These deformations can be tracked to the IR and we discuss how they affect the Schwarzian.

Are $f(R, {\rm Matter})$ theories really relevant to cosmology?

We examine $f(R, \text{Matter})$ theories that directly couple the curvature $R$ or $R_{\mu\nu}$ with the matter sector in the action, in addition to the universal coupling. We argue that if the matter sector includes the Standard Model (SM), such theories are either inconsistent or already excluded by experiments unless they are a rewriting of $f(R)$ gravity or general relativity. If these theories genuinely couple the SM to curvature, they suffer from the presence of ghost states at energies within their domain of application for cosmological purposes. Therefore, we raise questions about their relevance to cosmology. Moreover, if such theories do not include the SM, they should just be seen as scalar-tensor, vector-tensor, ..., theories, depending on the additional degrees of freedom. They should thus be studied accordingly.}

De Sitter and Minkowski Solutions in 4+1 Brane-World Models

We comment on approaches to the Cosmological Constant Problem in 4+1 dimensions, with the Standard Model fields confined to a 3-brane. We show that requiring maximal 4D symmetry only on this 3-brane (and not on all other 3-branes that foliate the 4+1-dimensional space) leads to a wide class of de Sitter solutions on the brane, with the Hubble constant sourced by the brane tension and a bulk scalar potential. For Poincar\'e symmetry on the brane, fine-tuning is always necessary. The de Sitter solutions are generated at a special dynamical point. Small deviations from this point are shown to grow exponentially with the number of e-folds.
