Atomic Interferometry with Spin-Orbit-Coupled Spin-1 Condensates

We propose and analyze a quantum interferometry scheme based on a Raman-dressed Bose gas with spin-orbit coupling. In this system, the atom-light coupling mixes spin and momentum degrees of freedom, giving rise, in the low-energy regime, to an effective spinor condensate whose spin-mixing interaction can be tuned independently of the atomic density. This controllability enables a separation between state preparation and phase imprinting, and provides a natural route to echo-type protocols based on effective time reversal. Within this framework, critical regimes of the effective spinor Hamiltonian can be used to generate entanglement and enhance interferometric sensitivity beyond the standard quantum limit. In addition, the spin-momentum locking of the dressed modes gives access to spatial density modulations that provide an alternative readout of the interferometric phase. In particular, phase information can be extracted from the displacement of spin-orbit-induced density stripes even when conventional spin observables are insensitive within the effective spinor description. Our results identify Raman-dressed spinor gases as a flexible platform for nonlinear atomic interferometry, combining controllable spin-mixing dynamics with spatially resolved phase readout.

Encoding a topological gauge theory on a ring-shaped Raman-coupled Bose gas

Topological gauge theories constitute a framework for understanding strongly correlated quantum matter in terms of weakly interacting composite degrees of freedom. Their topological properties become evident when these theories are realized on a space of non-trivial topology. Here, we propose a scheme to realize a one-dimensional topological gauge theory, the so-called chiral BF theory, on a ring geometry. We obtain such a theory by dimensionally reducing Chern-Simons theory on a disk to the chiral BF theory defined on the ring. Then, we encode the theory into a Hamiltonian with a coupling between angular momentum and density, and we propose and numerically benchmark its realization in an optically-dressed Bose gas confined in a ring-shaped trap. There, the topological properties of the underlying theory manifest themselves through a magnetic flux variable that is density-dependent. We quantify such density-dependent magnetic flux in terms of the ground-state angular momentum and the chiral properties of the system through a Bogoliubov analysis. Our proposal enables the observation of topological features of the chiral BF theory that become manifest due to the non-trivial topology of the ring geometry.

Frustrated magnets without geometrical frustration in bosonic flux ladders

We propose a scheme to realize a frustrated Bose-Hubbard model with ultracold atoms in an optical lattice that comprises the frustrated spin-1/2 quantum XX model. Our approach is based on a square ladder of magnetic flux close to $π$ with one real and one synthetic spin dimension. Although this system does not have geometrical frustration, we show that at low energies it maps into an effective triangular ladder with staggered fluxes for specific values of the synthetic tunneling. We numerically investigate its rich phase diagram and show that it contains bond-ordered-wave and chiral superfluid phases. Our scheme gives access to minimal instances of frustrated magnets without the need for real geometrical frustration, in a setup of minimal experimental complexity.

Excited-state quantum phase transitions in spin-orbit coupled Bose gases

Excited-state quantum phase transitions depend on and reveal the structure of the whole spectrum of many-body systems. While they are theoretically well understood, finding suitable signatures and detect them in actual experiments remains challenging. For instance, in spinor gases, excited-state phases have been identified and characterized through a topological order parameter that is challenging to measure in experiments. Here, we propose the Raman-dressed spin-orbit coupled gas as a novel platform to explore excited-state quantum phase transitions. In a weakly-coupled regime, the dressed system is equivalent to a spinor gas with tunable spin-spin interactions. Through this equivalence we are able to define a new excited-state phase of the dressed gas. The phase is characterize by the the behavior of the spatial density modulations, or stripes, induced by spin-orbit coupling, and can in principle be measured in current state-of-the-art experiments with ultracold atoms. Conversely, we show that the properties of the excited phase can be exploited to prepare stripe states with large and stable density modulations.

Dynamical preparation of stripe states in spin-orbit coupled gases

In spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, spin-changing collisions are a remarkable proxy to coherently realize macroscopic many-body quantum states. These processes have been, e.g., exploited to generate entanglement, to study dynamical quantum phase transitions, and proposed for realizing nematic phases in atomic condensates. In the same systems dressed by Raman beams, the coupling between spin and momentum induces a spin dependence in the scattering processes taking place in the gas. Here we show that, at weak couplings, such modulation of the collisions leads to an effective Hamiltonian which is equivalent to the one of an artificial spinor gas with spin-changing collisions that are tunable with the Raman intensity. By exploiting this dressed-basis description, we propose a robust protocol to coherently drive the spin-orbit coupled condensate into the ferromagnetic stripe phase via crossing a quantum phase transition of the effective low-energy model in an excited-state.

Effective triangular ladders with staggered flux from spin-orbit coupling in 1D optical lattices

Light-induced spin-orbit coupling is a flexible tool to study quantum magnetism with ultracold atoms. In this work we show that spin-orbit coupled Bose gases in a one-dimensional optical lattice can be mapped into a two-leg triangular ladder with staggered flux following a lowest-band truncation of the Hamiltonian. The effective flux and the ratio of the tunneling strengths can be independently adjusted to a wide range of values. We identify a certain regime of parameters where a hard-core boson approximation holds and the system realizes a frustrated triangular spin ladder with tunable flux. We study the properties of the effective spin Hamiltonian using the density-matrix renormalization-group method and determine the phase diagram at half-filling. It displays two phases: a uniform superfluid and a bond-ordered insulator. The latter can be stabilized only for low Raman detuning. Finally, we provide experimentally feasible trajectories across the parameter space of the SOC system that cross the predicted phase transition.
