Modular forms of CM type mod $\ell$

We say that a normalized modular form is of CM type modulo $\ell$ by an imaginary quadratic field $K$ if its Fourier coefficients $a_p$ are congruent to $0$ modulo a prime $\mathcal L\mid \ell$ for every prime $p$ that is inert in $K$. In this paper, we address the following question. Let $f$ be a weight~$2$ cuspidal Hecke eigenform without complex multiplication which is of CM type modulo $\ell$ by an imaginary quadratic field $K$. Does there exist a congruence modulo $\ell$ between $f$ and a genuine CM modular form of weight~$2$? We conjecture that such a congruence always exists. We prove this conjecture for $\ell>2$ and $\ell\neq 3$ when $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$. In this setting, we discuss three situations: (i) modular forms attached to abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication, (ii) $\mathbb{Q}$-curves completely defined over an imaginary quadratic field, and (iii) elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose $5$-torsion Galois representation has image the maximal cyclic of order $16$ inside $\operatorname{GL}_2({\mathbb F}_5)$. In all these cases, the modular forms under consideration are of CM type modulo suitable primes~$\ell$, and we show that the associated residual Galois representations are monomial with respect to an imaginary quadratic field $K$ (in some instances, more than one such field). Finally, we present numerical evidence that motivated the conjecture and provides further support for its validity beyond the cases treated in this paper.

Computations on Modular Jacobian Surfaces

We give a method for finding rational equations of genus 2 curves whose jacobians are abelian varieties $A_f$ attached by Shimura to normalized newforms $f \in S_2( Γ_0(N))$. We present all the curves corresponding to principally polarized surfaces $A_f$ for $N\leq500$.

Bielliptic modular curves $X_0^*(N)$ with square-free levels

Let $N\geq 1$ be a square-free integer such that the modular curve $X_0^*(N)$ has genus $\geq 2$. We prove that $X_0^*(N)$ is bielliptic exactly for $19$ values of $N$, and we determine the automorphism group of these bielliptic curves. In particular, we obtain the first examples of nontrivial $Aut(X_0^*(N))$ when the genus of $X_0^*(N)$ is $\geq 3$. Moreover, we prove that the set of all quadratic points over $\mathbb{Q}$ for the modular curve $X_0^*(N)$ with genus $\geq 2$ and $N$ square-free is not finite exactly for $51$ values of $N$.

Frobenius distribution for quotients of Fermat curves of prime exponent

Let C denote the Fermat curve over Q of prime exponent l. The Jacobian Jac(C) of C splits over Q as the product of Jacobians Jac(C_k), 0< k < l-1, where C_k are curves obtained as quotients of C by certain subgroups of automorphisms of C. It is well known that Jac(C_k) is the power of an absolutely simple abelian variety B_k with complex multiplication. We call degenerate those pairs (l,k) for which B_k has degenerate CM type. For a non-degenerate pair (l,k), we compute the Sato-Tate group of Jac(C_k), prove the generalized Sato-Tate Conjecture for it, and give an explicit method to compute the moments and measures of the involved distributions. Regardless of (l,k) being degenerate or not, we also obtain Frobenius equidistribution results for primes of certain residue degrees in the l-th cyclotomic field. Key to our results is a detailed study of the rank of certain generalized Demjanenko matrices.

Constraints on the automorphism group of a curve

For a curve $X$ of genus $>1$ defined over a finite field, we present a criterion which allows us to state the non existence of automorphisms of order a power of a rational prime. We show how this criterion can be used to determine the automorphism group of some modular curves of high genus.

Functions and differentials on the non-split Cartan modular curve of level 11

The genus $4$ modular curve $X_{ns}(11)$ attached to a non-split Cartan group of level $11$ admits a model defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. We compute generators for its function field in terms of Siegel modular functions. We also show that its Jacobian is isomorphic over $\mathbb{Q}$ to the new part of the Jacobian of the classical modular curve $X_0(121)$.

Equations of Bielliptic Modular Curves

We give a procedure to determine equations for the modular curves $X_0(N)$ which are bielliptic and equations for the 30 values of $N$ such that $X_0(N)$ is bielliptic and nonhyperelliptic are presented.
