Genus two curves with quaternionic multiplication and modular jacobian

We describe a method to determine all the isomorphism classes of principal polarizations of the modular abelian surfaces $A_f$ with quaternionic multiplication attached to a normalized newform $f$ without complex multiplication. We include an example of $A_f$ with quaternionic multiplication for which we find numerically a curve $C$ whose Jacobian is $A_f$ up to numerical approximation, and we prove that it has quaternionic multiplication and is isogenous to $A_f$.

Non-elliptic Shimura curves of genus one

We present explicit models for non-elliptic genus one Shimura curves X_0(D, N) with Gamma_0(N)-level structure arising from an indefinite quaternion algebra of reduced discriminant D, and Atkin-Lehner quotients of them. In addition, we discuss and extend Jordan's work in his Ph. D Thesis on points with complex multiplication on Shimura curves.

Equations of Shimura curves of genus 2

We present explicit models for Shimura curves X_D and Atkin-Lehner quotients X_D/w_m of them of genus 2. We show that several equations conjectured by Kurihara are correct and compute for them the kernel of Ribet's isogeny J_0(D)^{new} --> J_D between the new part of the Jacobian of the modular curve X_0(D) and the Jacobian of X_D.

On finiteness conjectures for endomorphism algebras of abelian surfaces

It is conjectured that there exist finitely many isomorphism classes of simple endomorphism algebras of abelian varieties of GL_2-type over \Q of bounded dimension. We explore this conjecture when particularized to quaternion endomorphism algebras of abelian surfaces by giving a moduli interpretation which translates the question into the diophantine arithmetic of Shimura curves embedded in Hilbert surfaces. We address the resulting problems on these curves by local and global methods, including Chabauty techniques on explicit equations of Shimura curves.

Plane quartic twists of X(5,3)

Given an odd representation of the absolute Galois group of Q onto PGL(2,3) and a positive integer N, there exists a twisted modular curve defined over Q whose rational points classify the quadratic Q-curves of degree N realizing the representation. The paper gives a method to provide an explicit plane quartic model for this curve in the genus-three case N=5.

Abelian surfaces of GL2-type as Jacobians of curves

We study the set of isomorphism classes of principal polarizations on abelian varieties of GL2-type. As applications of our results, we construct examples of curves C, C'/\Q of genus two which are nonisomorphic over \bar \Q and share isomorphic unpolarized modular Jacobian varieties over \Q ; we also show a method to obtain genus two curves over \Q whose Jacobian varieties are isomorphic to Weil's restriction of quadratic \Q-curves, and present examples.

Finiteness results for modular curves of genus at least 2

A curve X over the field Q of rational numbers is modular if it is dominated by X_1(N) for some N; if in addition the image of its jacobian in J_1(N) is contained in the new subvariety of J_1(N), then X is called a new modular curve. We prove that for each integer g at least 2, the set of new modular curves over Q of genus g is finite and computable. For the computability result, we prove an algorithmic version of the de Franchis-Severi Theorem. Similar finiteness results are proved for new modular curves of bounded gonality, for new modular curves whose jacobian is a quotient of the new part of J_0(N) with N divisible by a prescribed prime, and for modular curves (new or not) with levels in a restricted set. We study new modular hyperelliptic curves in detail. In particular, we find all new modular curves of genus 2 explicitly, and construct what might be the complete list of all new modular hyperelliptic curves of all genera. Finally we prove that for each field k of characteristic zero and each integer g at least 2, the set of genus g curves over k dominated by a Fermat curve is finite and computable.

Modular Curves Of Genus 2

We prove that there is only a finite number of genus 2 curves C defined over Q such that there exists a nonconstant morphism pi:X_1(N) --->C defined over Q and the jacobian of C, J(C), is a Q-factor of the new part of the jacobian of X_1(N), J_1(N)^{new}. Moreover, we prove that there are only 149 genus two curves of this kind with the additional requeriment that their jacobians are Q-simple. We determine the corresponding newforms and present equations for all these curves.
