Extension of Symmetric Spaces and Restriction of Weyl Groups and Invariant Polynomials

Polynomial invariants are fundamental objects in analysis on Lie groups and symmetric spaces. Invariant differential operators on symmetric spaces are described by Weyl group invariant polynomial. In this article we give a simple criterion that ensure that the restriction of invariant polynomials to subspaces is surjective. In another paper we will apply our criterion to problems in Fourier analysis on projective/injective limits, specifically to theorems of Paley--Wiener type.

Branching of Representations to Symmetric Subgroups

Let $\gg$ be the Lie algebra of a compact Lie group and let $θ$ be any automorphism of $\gg$. Let $\gk$ denote the fixed point subalgebra $\gg^θ$. In this paper we present LiE programs that, for any finite dimensional complex representation $π$ of $\gg$, give the explicit branching $π|_\gk$ of $π$ on $\gk$. Cases of special interest include the cases where $θ$ has order 2 (corresponding to compact riemannian symmetric spaces $G/K$), where $θ$ has order 3 (corresponding to compact nearly--kaehler homogeneous spaces $G/K$), where $θ$ has order 5 (which include the fascinating 5--symmetric space $E_8/A_4A_4$), and the cases where $\gk$ is the centralizer of a toral subalgebra of $\gg$.

Infinite Dimensional Multiplicity Free Spaces III: Matrix Coefficients and Regular Functions

In earlier papers we studied direct limits $(G,K) = \varinjlim (G_n,K_n)$ of two types of Gelfand pairs. The first type was that in which the $G_n/K_n$ are compact Riemannian symmetric spaces. The second type was that in which $G_n = N_n\rtimes K_n$ with $N_n$ nilpotent, in other words pairs $(G_n,K_n)$ for which $G_n/K_n$ is a commutative nilmanifold. In each we worked out a method inspired by the Frobenius--Schur Orthogonality Relations to define isometric injections $ζ_{m,n}: L^2(G_n/K_n) \hookrightarrow L^2(G_m/K_m)$ for $m \geqq n$ and prove that the left regular representation of $G$ on the Hilbert space direct limit $L^2(G/K) := \varinjlim L^2(G_n/K_n)$ is multiplicity--free. This left open questions concerning the nature of the elements of $L^2(G/K)$. Here we define spaces $\cA(G_n/K_n)$ of regular functions on $G_n/K_n$ and injections $ν_{m,n} : \cA(G_n/K_n) \to \cA(G_m/K_m)$ for $m \geqq n$ related to restriction by $ν_{m,n}(f)|_{G_n/K_n} = f$. Thus the direct limit $\cA(G/K):= \varinjlim \{\cA(G_n/K_n), ν_{m,n}\}$ sits as a particular $G$--submodule of the much larger inverse limit $\varprojlim \{\cA(G_n/K_n), \text{restriction}\}$. Further, we define a pre Hilbert space structure on $\cA(G/K)$ derived from that of $L^2(G/K)$. This allows an interpretation of $L^2(G/K)$ as the Hilbert space completion of the concretely defined function space $\cA(G/K)$, and also defines a $G$--invariant inner product on $\cA(G/K)$ for which the left regular representation of $G$ is multiplicity--free.

Geometry of the Borel -- de Siebenthal Discrete Series

Let $G_0$ be a connected, simply connected real simple Lie group. Suppose that $G_0$ has a compact Cartan subgroup $T_0$, so it has discrete series representations. Relative to $T_0$ there is a distinguished positive root system $Δ^+$ for which there is a unique noncompact simple root $ν$, the "Borel -- de Siebenthal system". There is a lot of fascinating geometry associated to the corresponding "Borel -- de Siebenthal discrete series" representations of $G_0$. In this paper we explore some of those geometric aspects and we work out the $K_0$--spectra of the Borel -- de Siebenthal discrete series representations. This has already been carried out in detail for the case where the associated symmetric space $G_0/K_0$ is of hermitian type, i.e. where $ν$ has coefficient 1 in the maximal root $μ$, so we assume that the group $G_0$ is not of hermitian type, in other words that $ν$ has coefficient 2 in $μ$. \medskip Several authors have studied the case where $G_0/K_0$ is a quaternionic symmetric space and the inducing holomorphic vector bundle is a line bundle. That is the case where $μ$ is orthogonal to the compact simple roots and the inducing representation is 1--dimensional.

Parabolic Subgroups of Real Direct Limit Groups

Let $G_R$ be a classical real direct limit Lie group and $g_R$ its Lie algebra. The parabolic subalgebras of the complexification $g_C$ were described by the first two authors. In the present paper we extend these results to $g_R$. This also gives a description of the parabolic subgroups of $G_R$. Furthermore, we give a geometric criterion for a parabolic subgroup $P_C$ of $G_C$ to intersect $G_R$ in a parabolic subgroup. This criterion involves the $G_R$-orbit structure of the flag ind-manifold $G_C/P_C$.

Cycle Space Constructions for Exhaustions of Flag Domains

In the study of complex flag manifolds, flag domains and their cycle spaces, a key point is the fact that the cycle space $\mathcal M_D$ of a flag domain $D$ is a Stein manifold. That fact has a long history. The earliest approach relied on construction of a strictly plurisubharmonic function on $\mathcal M_D$, starting with a $q$--convex exhaustion function on $D$, where $q$ is the dimension of a particular maximal compact subvariety of $D$ (we use the normalization that 0--convex means Stein). Construction of that exhaustion function on $D$ required that $D$ be measurable. In that case the exhaustion on $D$ was transferred to $\mathcal M_D$, using a special case of a method due to Barlet. Here we do the opposite: we use an incidence method to construct a canonical plurisubharmonic exhaustion function on $\mathcal M_D$ and use it in turn to construct a canonical $q$--convex exhaustion function on $D$. This promises to have strong consequences for cohomology vanishing theorems and the construction of admissible representations of real reductive Lie groups.

Infinite Dimensional Multiplicity Free Spaces II: Limits of Commutative Nilmanifolds

We study direct limits $(G,K) = \varinjlim (G_n,K_n)$ of Gelfand pairs of the form $G_n = N_n\rtimes K_n$ with $N_n$ nilpotent, in other words pairs $(G_n,K_n)$ for which $G_n/K_n$ is a commutative nilmanifold. First, we extend the criterion of \cite{W3} for a direct limit representation to be multiplicity free. Then we study direct limits $G/K = \varinjlim G_n/K_n$ of commutative nilmanifolds and look to see when the regular representation of $G = \varinjlim G_n$ on an appropriate Hilbert space $\varinjlim L^2(G_n/K_n)$ is multiplicity free. One knows that the $N_n$ are commutative or 2--step nilpotent. In many cases where the derived algebras $[\gn_n,\gn_n]$ are of bounded dimension we construct $G_n$--equivariant isometric maps $ζ_n : L^2(G_n/K_n) \to L^2(G_{n+1}/K_{n+1})$ and prove that the left regular representation of $G$ on the Hilbert space $L^2(G/K) := \varinjlim \{L^2(G_n/K_n),ζ_n\}$ is a multiplicity free direct integral of irreducible unitary representations. The direct integral and its irreducible constituents are described explicitly. One constituent of our argument is an extension of the classical Peter--Weyl Theorem to parabolic direct limits of compact groups.

Infinite Dimensional Multiplicity Free Spaces I: Limits of Compact Commutative Spaces

We study direct limits $(G,K) = \varinjlim (G_n,K_n)$ of compact Gelfand pairs. First, we develop a criterion for a direct limit representation to be a multiplicity--free discrete direct sum of irreducible representations. Then we look at direct limits $G/K = \varinjlim G_n/K_n$ of compact riemannian symmetric spaces, where we combine our criterion with the Cartan--Helgason Theorem to show in general that the regular representation of $G = \varinjlim G_n$ on a certain function space $\varinjlim L^2(G_n/K_n)$ is multiplicity free. That method is not applicable for direct limits of nonsymmetric Gelfand pairs, so we introduce two other methods. The first, based on ``parabolic direct limits'' and ``defining representations'', extends the method used in the symmetric space case. The second uses some (new) branching rules from finite dimensional representation theory. In both cases we define function spaces $\cA(G/K)$, $\cC(G/K)$ and $L^2(G/K)$ to which our multiplicity--free criterion applies.

Spherical Functions on Euclidean Space

We study special functions on euclidean spaces from the viewpoint of riemannian symmetric spaces. Here the euclidean space $E^n = G/K$ where $G$ is the semidirect product $R^n \cdot K$ of the translation group with a closed subgroup $K$ of the orthogonal group O(n). We give exact parameterizations of the space of $(G,K)$--spherical functions by a certain affine algebraic variety, and of the positive definite ones by a real form of that variety. We give exact formulae for the spherical functions in the case where $K$ is transitive on the unit sphere in $E^n$.

Principal Series Representations of Direct Limit Groups

We combine the geometric realization of principal series representations of the author, with the Bott--Borel--Weil Theorem for direct limits of compact groups of Natarajan, Rodriguez-Carrington and the author, obtaining limits of principal series representations for direct limits of real reductive Lie groups. We introduce the notion of weakly parabolic direct limits and relate it to the conditions that the limit representations are norm--preserving representations on a Banach space or unitary representations on a Hilbert space. We specialize the results to diagonal embedding direct limit groups. Finally we discuss the possibilities of extending the results to limits of tempered series other than the principal series.

Injectivity of the Double Fibration Transform for Cycle Spaces of Flag Domains

The basic setup consists of a complex flag manifold $Z=G/Q$ where $G$ is a complex semisimple Lie group and $Q$ is a parabolic subgroup, an open orbit $D = G_0(z) \subset Z$ where $G_0$ is a real form of $G$, and a $G_0$--homogeneous holomorphic vector bundle $\mathbb E \to D$. The topic here is the double fibration transform ${\cal P}: H^q(D;{\cal O}(\mathbb E)) \to H^0({\cal M}_D;{\cal O}(\mathbb E'))$ where $q$ is given by the geometry of $D$, ${\cal M}_D$ is the cycle space of $D$, and $\mathbb E' \to {\cal M}_D$ is a certain naturally derived holomorphic vector bundle. Schubert intersection theory is used to show that ${\cal P}$ is injective whenever $\mathbb E$ is sufficiently negative.
