Homotopy of periodic two by two matrices

We describe the homotopy classes of 2 by 2 periodic simple (=non-degenerate) matrices with various symmetries. This turns out to be an elementary exercise in the homotopy of closed curves in three dimensions. The matrices represent gapped Bloch Hamiltonians in 1D with a two-dimensional Hilbert space per unit cell.

Where is the photon in an interferometer?

In a paper titled "Asking photons where they have been?" \cite{LV} Danan, Farfurnik, Bar-Ad and Vaidman describe an experiment with pre and post selected photons going through nested Mach-Zehnder interferometers. They find that some of the mirrors leave no footprints on the signal and interpret this as evidence that the photon skipped these mirrors. They argue that the experiment supports Aharonov-Vaidman's formulation of quantum mechanics \cite{AharonovVaidman} where post-selected particles are assigned disconnected trajectories. I review the experiment and analyze it within the orthodox framework of quantum mechanics. The standard view of interfering trajectories accounts for the experimental findings.

A Generalized Sagnac-Wang-Fizeau formula

We present a special-relativistic analysis of deformable interferometers where counter propagating beams share a common optical path. The optical path is allowed to change rather arbitrarily and need not be stationary. We show that, in the absence of dispersion the phase shift has two contributions. To leading order in $v/c$ one contribution is given by Wang empirical formula for deformable Sagnac interferometers. The second contribution is due to the stretching of the optical path and we give an explicit formula for this stretch term valid to first order in $v/c$. The analysis provides a unifying framework incorporating the Sagnac, Wang and Fizeau effects in a single scheme and gives a rigorous proof of Wang empirical formula.

Fredholm determinants and the statistics of charge transport

Using operator algebraic methods we show that the moment generating function of charge transport in a system with infinitely many non-interacting Fermions is given by a determinant of a certain operator in the one-particle Hilbert space. The formula is equivalent to a formula of Levitov and Lesovik in the finite dimensional case and may be viewed as its regularized form in general. Our result embodies two tenets often realized in mesoscopic physics, namely, that the transport properties are essentially independent of the length of the leads and of the depth of the Fermi sea.

A frictionless microswimmer

We investigate the self-locomotion of an elongated microswimmer by virtue of the unidirectional tangential surface treadmilling. We show that the propulsion could be almost frictionless, as the microswimmer is propelled forward with the speed of the backward surface motion, i.e. it moves throughout an almost quiescent fluid. We investigate this swimming technique using the special spheroidal coordinates and also find an explicit closed-form optimal solution for a two-dimensional treadmiler via complex-variable techniques.

Fredholm Indices and the Phase Diagram of Quantum Hall Systems

The quantized Hall conductance in a plateau is related to the index of a Fredholm operator. In this paper we describe the generic ``phase diagram'' of Fredholm indices associated with bounded and Toeplitz operators. We discuss the possible relevance of our results to the phase diagram of disordered integer quantum Hall systems.

Quantum Response at Finite Fields and Breakdown of Chern Numbers

We show that the response to an electric field, in models of the Integral Quantum Hall effect, is analytic in the field and has isolated essential singularity at zero field. We also study the breakdown of Chern numbers associated with the response of Floquet states. We argue, and give evidence, that the breakdown of Chern numbers in Floquet states is a discontinuous transition at zero field. This follows from an observation, of independent interest, that Chern numbers for finite dimensional Floquet operators are generically zero. These results rule out the possibility that the breakdown of the Hall conductance is a phase transition at finite fields for a large class of models.

Charge Deficiency, Charge Transport and Comparison of Dimensions

We study the relative index of two orthogonal infinite dimensional projections which, in the finite dimensional case, is the difference in their dimensions. We relate the relative index to the Fredholm index of appropriate operators, discuss its basic properties, and obtain various formulas for it. We apply the relative index to counting the change in the number of electrons below the Fermi energy of certain quantum systems and interpret it as the charge deficiency. We study the relation of the charge deficiency with the notion of adiabatic charge transport that arises from the consideration of the adiabatic curvature. It is shown that, under a certain covariance, (homogeneity), condition the two are related. The relative index is related to Bellissard's theory of the Integer Hall effect. For Landau Hamiltonians the relative index is computed explicitly for all Landau levels.

A Classification Scheme for Toroidal Molecules

We construct a class of periodic tilings of the plane, which corresponds to toroidal arrangements of trivalent atoms, with pentagonal, hexagonal and heptagonal rings. Each tiling is characterized by a set of four integers and determines a toroidal molecule. The tiling rules are motivated by geometric considerations and the tiling patterns are rich enough to describe a wide class of toroidal carbon molecules, with a broad range of shapes and numbers of atoms. The molecular dimensions are simply related to the integers that determine the tiling. The configurational energy and the delocalisation energy of several molecules obtained in this way were computed for Tersoff and Hückel models. The results indicate that many of these molecules are not strained, and may be expected to be stable. We studied the influence of size on the Hückel spectrum: it bears both similarities and differences as compared with the case of tubules.
