Normal polytopes: between discrete, continuous, and random

The first three sections of this survey represent an updated and much expanded version of the abstract of my talk at FPSAC'2010: new results are incorporated and several concrete conjectures on the interactions between the three perspectives on normal polytopes in the title are proposed. The last section outlines new challenges in general convex polytopes, motivated by the study of normal polytopes.

Bottom complexes

The bottom complex of a finite polyhedal pointed rational cone is the lattice polytopal complex of the compact faces of the convex hull of nonzero lattice points in the cone. The algebra, associated to the bottom complex of a cone, defines a flat deformation of the affine toric variety, associated to the polyhedral cone, set-theoretically. We describe three explicit infinite families of abstract polytopal complexes, defining such flat deformations scheme-theoretically.

The pyramidal growth

Can one build an arbitrary polytope from any polytope inside by iteratively stacking pyramids onto facets, without losing the convexity throughout the process? We prove that this is indeed possible for (i) 3-polytopes, (ii) 4-polytopes under a certain infinitesimal quasi-pyramidal relaxation, and (iii) all dimensions asymptotically. The motivation partly comes from our study of K-theory of monoid rings and of certain posets of discrete-convex objects.

Normal polytopes and ellipsoids

We show that: (1) unimodular simplices in a lattice 3-polytope cover a neighborhood of the boundary of the polytope if and only if the polytope is very ample, (2) the convex hull of lattice points in every ellipsoid in R^3 has a unimodular cover, and (3) for every d at least 5, there are ellipsoids in R^d, such that the convex hulls of the lattice points in these ellipsoids are not even normal. Part (3) answers a question of Bruns, Michalek, and the author.

Unimodular rows over monoid rings

For a commutative Noetherian ring R of dimension d and a commutative cancellative monoid M, the elementary action on unimodular n-rows over the monoid ring R[M] is transitive for n>=max(d+2,3). The starting point is the case of polynomial rings, considered by A. Suslin in the 1970s. The main result completes a project, initiated in the early 1990s, and suggests a new direction in the study of K-theory of monoid rings.

Affine-compact functors

Several well known polytopal constuctions are examined from the functorial point of view. A naive analogy between the Billera-Sturmfels fiber polytope and the abelian kernel is disproved by an infinite explicit series of polytopes. A correct functorial formula is provided in terms of the affine-compact kernel. The dual cokernel object is almost always the natural affine projection. The Mond-Smith-van Straten space of sandwiched simplices, useful in stochastic factorizations, leads to a different kind of affine-compact functors and new challenges in polytope theory.

The poset of rational cones

We introduce a natural partial order on the set Cones(d) of rational cones in R^d. The poset NPol(d-1) of normal polytopes in R^{d-1} embeds into Cones(d) via the homogenization map. The order in Cones(d) is conjecturally the inclusion order. We prove this for d=3 and show a stronger version of the connectivity of Cones(d) for all d. Topological aspects of the conjecture are also discussed.

Quantum jumps of normal polytopes

We introduce a partial order on the set of all normal polytopes in R^d. This poset NPol(d) is a natural discrete counterpart of the continuum of convex compact sets in R^d, ordered by inclusion, and exhibits a remarkably rich combinatorial structure. We derive various arithmetic bounds on elementary relations in NPol(d), called "quantum jumps". The existence of extremal objects in NPol(d) is a challenge of number theoretical flavor, leading to interesting classes of normal polytopes: minimal, maximal, spherical. Minimal elements in NPol(5) have played a critical role in disproving various covering conjectures for normal polytopes in the 1990s. Here we report on the first examples of maximal elements in NPol(4) and NPol(5), found by a combination of the developed theory, random generation, and extensive computer search.

Very ample and Koszul segmental fibrations

In the hierarchy of structural sophistication for lattice polytopes, normal polytopes mark a point of origin; very ample and Koszul polytopes occupy bottom and top spots in this hierarchy, respectively. In this paper we explore a simple construction for lattice polytopes with a twofold aim. On the one hand, we derive an explicit series of very ample 3-dimensional polytopes with arbitrarily large deviation from the normality property, measured via the highest discrepancy degree between the corresponding Hilbert functions and Hilbert polynomials. On the other hand, we describe a large class of Koszul polytopes of arbitrary dimensions, containing many smooth polytopes and extending the previously known class of Nakajima polytopes.

Vertex maps between simplices, cubes, and crosspolytopes

We study the vertices of the polytopes of all affine maps (a.k.a. hom-polytopes) between higher dimensional simplices, cubes, and crosspolytopes. Systematic study of general hom-polytopes was initiated in [3]. The study of such vertices is the classical aspect of a conjectural homological theory of convex polytopes. One quickly runs into open problems even for simple source and target polytopes. The vertices of Hom(simplex_m,-) and Hom(-,cube_n) are easily understood. In this work we describe the vertex sets of Hom(box_m,simplex_n), Hom(diamond_m,simplex_n), and Hom(diamond_m,diamond_n). The emergent pattern in our arguments is reminiscent of diagram chasing in homological algebra.

K-theory of toric varieties revisited

After surveying higher K-theory of toric varieties, we present Totaro's old (c. 1997) unpublished result on expressing the corresponding homotopy theory via singular cohomology. It is a higher analog of the rational Chern character isomorphism for general toric schemes. In the special case of a projective simplicial toric scheme over a regular ring one obtains a rational isomorphism between the homotopy K-theory and the direct sum of m copies of the K-theory of the ground ring, m being the number of maximal cones in the underlying fan. Apart from its independent interest, in retrospect, Totaro's observations motivated some (old) and complement several other (very recent) results. We conclude with a conjecture on the nil-groups of affine monoid rings, extending the nilpotence property. The conjecture holds true for K_0.

Hom-polytopes

We study the polytopes of affine maps between two polytopes -- the hom-polytopes. The hom-polytope functor has a left adjoint -- tensor product polytopes. The analogy with the category of vector spaces is limited, as we illustrate by a series of explicit examples exhibiting various extremal properties. The main challenge for hom-polytopes is to determine their vertices. A polytopal analogue of the rank-nullity theorem amounts to understanding how the vertex maps behave relative to their surjective and injective factors. This leads to interesting classes of surjective maps. In the last two sections we focus on two opposite extremal cases -- when the source and target polytopes are both polygons and are either generic or regular.

Convex normality of rational polytopes with long edges

We introduce the property of convex normality of rational polytopes and give a dimensionally uniform lower bound for the edge lattice lengths, guaranteeing the property. As an application, we show that if every edge of a lattice d-polytope P has lattice length at least 4d(d+1) then P is normal. This answers in the positive a question raised in 2007. If P is a lattice simplex whose edges have lattice lengths at least d(d+1) then P is even covered by lattice parallelepipeds. For the approach developed here, it is necessary to involve rational polytopes even for applications to lattice polytopes.

On Bass' question for finitely generated algebras over large fields

Recently Cortinas-Haesemayer-Walker-Weibel gave affirmative answer to Bass' 1972 question on NK-groups for algebras of essentially finite type over large fields of characteristic 0. Here we give an alternative short proof of this result for algebras of finite type over such fields. Our approach is based on classical techniques in higher K-theory of rings and a direct K_i-analogue of an old observation of Murthy-Pedrini, dating back from the same 1972.

The Steinberg group of a monoid ring, nilpotence, and algorithms

For a regular ring R and an affine monoid M the homotheties of M act nilpotently on the Milnor unstable groups of R[M]. This strengthens the K_2 part of the main result of [G5] in two ways: the coefficient field of characteristic 0 is extended to any regular ring and the stable K_2-group is substituted by the unstable ones. The proof is based on a polyhedral/combinatorial techniques, computations in Steinberg groups, and a substantially corrected version of an old result on elementary matrices by Mushkudiani [Mu]. A similar stronger nilpotence result for K_1 and algorithmic consequences for factorization of high Frobenius powers of invertible matrices are also derived.

Commutator automorphisms of formal power series rings

For a big class of commutative rings R every continuous R-automorphism of R[[X_1,...,X_n]] with the identity linear part is in the commutator subgroup of Aut(R[[X_1,...,X_n]]). An explicit bound for the number of the involved commutators and a K-theoretic interpretation of this result are provided.

The nilpotence conjecture in K-theory of toric varieties

It is shown that all nontrivial elements in higher $K$-groups of toric varieties over a class of regular rings are annihilated by iterations of the natural Frobenius type endomorphisms. This is a higher analog of the triviality of vector bundles on affine toric varieties.
