Dynamical AdS/Yang-Mills Model

The AdS/CFT correspondence has provided new and useful insights into the nonperturbative regime of strongly coupled gauge theories. We construct a class of models meant to mimic Yang-Mills theory using the superpotential method. This method allows us to efficiently address the problem of solving all the equations of motion. The conformal symmetry is broken in the infrared by a dilaton field. Using a five-dimensional action we calculate the mass spectrum of scalar glueballs. This spectrum contains a tachyon, indicating an instability in the theory. We stabilize the theory by introducing a cosmological constant in the bulk and a pair of 3-branes, as in the Randall-Sundrum model. The scalar glueball masses computed by lattice gauge theory are then described very well by just a few parameters. Prospects for extending the model to other spins and parities and to finite temperature are considered.

High Baryon Densities Achieveable at RHIC and LHC

In high energy collisions nuclei are practically transparent to each other but produce very hot, nearly baryon-free, matter in the central rapidity region. Where do the baryons go? We calculate the energy loss of the nuclei using the color glass condensate model. Using a space-time picture of the collision we calculate the baryon and energy densities of the receding baryonic fireballs. For central collisions of large nuclei at RHIC and LHC we find baryon densities more than ten times that of atomic nuclei over a large volume which appear at high rapidities. These results can and are being used as initial conditions for subsequent hydrodynamic evolution and could test the equation of state of matter at very high baryon densities.

Causal Electric Charge Diffusion and Balance Functions in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We study the propogation and diffusion of electric charge fluctuations in high energy heavy ion collisions using the Cattaneo form for the dissipative part of the electric current. As opposed to the ordinary diffusion equation this form limits the speed at which charge can propagate. Including the noise term in the current, which arises uniquely from the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we calculate the balance functions for charged hadrons in a simple 1+1 dimensional Bjorken hydrodynamical model. Limiting the speed of propagation of charge fluctuations increases the height and reduces the width of these balance functions when plotted versus rapidity. We also estimate the numerical value of the associated diffusion time constant from AdS/CFT theory.

Hydrodynamic fluctuations near a critical endpoint and Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometry

The field of high energy nuclear collisions has witnessed a surge of interest in the role played by hydrodynamic fluctuations. Hydrodynamic fluctuations may have significant effects on matter created in heavy-ion accelerators whose trajectories in the plane of temperature versus chemical potential pass near a possible critical endpoint. We extend previous studies to explore the impact of these fluctuations on Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometry of identical hadrons. With an appropriately defined correlation function we find that the fluctuations increase substantially when the trajectory passes near a critical endpoint, and also displays a damped oscillatory behavior in the rapidity distance $Δy$ unlike that originating from initial-state fluctuations.

Achieving high baryon densities in the fragmentation regions in heavy ion collisions at top RHIC energy

Heavy ion collisions at extremely high energy, such as the top energy at RHIC, exhibit the property of transparency where there is a clear separation between the almost net-baryon-free central rapidity region and the net-baryon-rich fragmentation region. We calculate the net-baryon rapidity loss and the nuclear excitation energy using the energy-momentum tensor obtained from the McLerran-Venugopalan model. Nuclear compression during the collision is further estimated using a simple space-time picture. The results show that extremely high baryon densities, about twenty times larger than the normal nuclear density, can be achieved in the fragmentation regions.

High Baryon Densities in Heavy Ion Collisions at Energies Attainable at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the CERN Large Hadron Collider

In very high energy collisions nuclei are practically transparent to each other but produce very hot, nearly baryon-free, matter in the so-called central rapidity region. The energy in the central rapidity region comes from the kinetic energy of the colliding nuclei. We calculate the energy and rapidity loss of the nuclei using the color glass condensate model. This model also predicts the excitation energy of the nuclear fragments. Using a space-time picture of the collision we calculate the baryon and energy densities of the receding baryonic fireballs. For central collisions of gold nuclei at the highest energy attainable at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, for example, we find baryon densities more than ten times that of atomic nuclei over a large volume.

Early Time Dynamics of Gluon Fields in High Energy Nuclear Collisions

Nuclei colliding at very high energy create a strong, quasi-classical gluon field during the initial phase of their interaction. We present an analytic calculation of the initial space-time evolution of this field in the limit of very high energies using a formal recursive solution of the Yang-Mills equations. We provide analytic expressions for the initial chromo-electric and chromo-magnetic fields and for their energy-momentum tensor. In particular, we discuss event-averaged results for energy density and energy flow as well as for longitudinal and transverse pressure of this system. Our results are generally applicable if $τ< 1/Q_s$. The transverse energy flow of the gluon field exhibits hydrodynamic-like contributions that follow transverse gradients of the energy density. In addition, a rapidity-odd energy flow also emerges from the non-abelian analog of Gauss' Law and generates non-vanishing angular momentum of the field. We will discuss the space-time picture that emerges from our analysis and its implications for observables in heavy ion collisions.

Pressure Anisotropy in Heavy Ion Collisions from Color Glass Condensate

We generalize calculations of the energy-momentum tensor for classical gluon fields in the McLerran-Venugopalan model using the small-$τ$ power series expansion method. Results to all orders for the energy density and pressures are given in the leading $Q^2$ approximation and with the inclusion of running coupling effects. The energy density and transverse pressure decrease monotonically with time while the longitudinal pressure starts from a negative value and increases towards zero.

A Dynamical Three-Field AdS/QCD Model

The Anti-de Sitter Space/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence may offer new and useful insights into the non-perturbative regime of strongly coupled gauge theories such as Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). We present an AdS/CFT-inspired model that describes the spectra of light mesons. The conformal symmetry is broken by a background dilaton field, and chiral symmetry breaking and linear confinement are described by a chiral condensate field. These background fields, along with a background glueball condensate field, are derived from a potential. We describe the construction of the potential, and the calculation of the meson spectra, which match experimental data well. We argue that the presence of the third background field is necessary to properly describe the meson spectra.

Meson Spectra and Thermodynamics in Soft-Wall AdS/QCD

The AdS/CFT correspondence may offer new and useful insights into the non- perturbative regime of strongly coupled gauge theories such as Quantum Chromodynamics. Soft-wall AdS/QCD models have reproduced the linear trajectories of meson spectra by including background dilaton and chiral condensate fields. Efforts to derive these background fields from a scalar potential have so far been unsuccessful in satisfying the UV boundary conditions set by the AdS/CFT dictionary while reproducing the IR behavior needed to obtain the correct chiral symmetry breaking and meson spectra. We present a three-field scalar parametrization that includes the dilaton field and the chiral and glueball condensates. This model is consistent with linear trajectories for the meson spectra and the correct mass-splitting between the vector and axial-vector mesons. We also present the resulting meson trajectories.

Influence of a Critical Point on Hydrodynamic Fluctuations in Heavy Ion Collisions

Hydrodynamic fluctuations have been studied in a wide variety of physical, chemical, and biological phenomena in the past decade. In high energy heavy ion collisions, there will be intrinsic fluctuations even if the initial conditions are fixed. Fluctuations will be greatly enhanced if the trajectory in the plane of temperature versus chemical potential passes near a critical point. We construct a model for the thermal conductivity which diverges at the critical point with the correct critical exponents, and use it in a simple illustrative model of a heavy ion collision. The proton correlation function is sensitive to the presence of the critical point.

Thermal Conductivity and Chiral Critical Point in Heavy Ion Collisions

Background: Quantum Chromodynamics is expected to have a phase transition in the same static universality class as the 3D Ising model and the liquid-gas phase transition. The properties of the equation of state, the transport coefficients, and especially the location of the critical point are under intense theoretical investigation. Some experiments are underway, and many more are planned, at high energy heavy ion accelerators. Purpose: Develop a model of the thermal conductivity, which diverges at the critical point, and use it to study the impact of hydrodynamic fluctuations on observables in high energy heavy ion collisions. Methods: We apply mode coupling theory, together with a previously developed model of the free energy that incorporates the critical exponents and amplitudes, to construct a model of the thermal conductivity in the vicinity of the critical point. The effect of the thermal conductivity on correlation functions in heavy ion collisions is studied in a boost invariant hydrodynamic model via fluctuations, or noise. Results: We find that the closer a thermodynamic trajectory comes to the critical point the greater is the magnitude of the fluctuations in thermodynamic variables and in the 2-particle correlation functions in momentum space. Conclusions: It may be possible to discern the existence of a critical point, its location, and thermodynamic and transport properties near to it in heavy ion collisions using the methods developed here.

Three-Field Potential for Soft-Wall AdS/QCD

The Anti-de Sitter Space/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence may offer new and useful insights into the non-perturbative regime of strongly coupled gauge theories such as Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Soft-wall AdS/QCD models have reproduced the linear Regge trajectories of meson spectra by including background dilaton and chiral condensate fields. Efforts to derive these background fields from a scalar potential have so far been unsuccessful in satisfying the UV boundary conditions set by the AdS/CFT dictionary while reproducing the IR behavior needed to obtain the correct meson spectra. We present work toward a three-field scalar potential that includes the dilaton field and the chiral and glueball condensates. This model is consistent with background fields that yield linear trajectories for the meson spectra and the correct mass-splitting between the vector and axial-vector mesons.

Pseudoscalar Mass Spectrum in a Soft-Wall Model of AdS/QCD

The Anti-de Sitter Space/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence may offer new and useful insights into the non-perturbative regime of strongly coupled gauge theories such as Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Recently a modified soft-wall AdS/QCD model incorporated independent sources for explicit and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and linear confinement. This model contains a modified dilaton and higher-order interaction terms in the Lagrangian. Within this model we explore the radial pseudoscalar mass spectrum using two different representations of the pion field. We find the mass eigenvalues associated with each representation, show the equivalence between the two, and find good agreement with the pion masses. The Gell-Mann--Oakes--Renner relation is naturally obtained.

Thermodynamics and Cosmological Constant of Non-Local Field Theories from p-Adic Strings

We develop the thermodynamics of field theories characterized by non-local propagators. We analyze the partition function and main thermodynamic properties arising from perturbative thermal loops. We focus on the p-adic models associated with the tachyon phenomenology in string theories. We reproduce well known features of these theories, but also obtain many new results. In particular, we explain how to maintain consistency of such non-local theories by avoiding the appearance of ghosts at finite temperature. As a consequence of this fact, the vacuum energy in p-adic theories becomes positive. It is also hierarchically suppressed, and we explore the parameter space where it is consistent with the observed value of the cosmological constant.

Finite Temperature Solitons in Non-Local Field Theories from p-Adic Strings

Non-local field theories which arise from p-adic string theories have vacuum soliton solutions. We find the soliton solutions at finite temperature. These solutions become important for the partition function when the temperature exceeds m_s/g_o^2 where m_s is the string mass scale and g_o is the open string coupling.

Thermal Duality and Hagedorn Transition from p-adic Strings

We develop the finite temperature theory of p-adic string models. We find that the thermal properties of these non-local field theories can be interpreted either as contributions of standard thermal modes with energies proportional to the temperature, or inverse thermal modes with energies proportional to the inverse of the temperature, leading to a "thermal duality" at leading order (genus one) analogous to the well known T-duality of string theory. The p-adic strings also recover the asymptotic limits (high and low temperature) for arbitrary genus that purely stringy calculations have yielded. We also discuss our findings surrounding the nature of the Hagedorn transition.
