On the Theory of Quantum Oscillations of the Elastic Moduli in Layered Conductors

In this paper we study theoretically how the local geometry of the Fermi surface (FS) of a layered conductor can affect quantum oscillations in the thermodynamic observables. We introduce a concrete model of the FS of a layered conductor. The model permits us to analyze the characteristic features of quantum oscillatory phenomena in these materials which occure due to local anomalies of the Gaussian curvature of the FS. Our analysis takes into account strong interaction among quasiparticles and we study the effect of this interaction within the framework of Fermi-liquid theory. We show that the Fermi-liquid interaction strongly affects the density of states of quasiparticles (DOS) on the FS. As a result DOS can have singularities near the peaks of its oscillations in a strong magnetic field. These singularities can be significantly strengthened when the FS of the layered conductor is locally flattened. This can lead to magnetic and lattice instabilities of a special kind which are considered in the final part of the work.

Theory of Magneto--Acoustic Transport in Modulated Quantum Hall Systems Near $ν=1/2$

Motivated by the experimental results of Willett et al [Phys.Rev. Lett., {\bf 78}, 4478 (1997)] we develop a magneto-transport theory for the response of a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime near Landau level filling factor $ν= 1/2$ to the surface acoustic wave (SAW) in the presence of an added periodic density modulation. We assume there exists a Composite Fermion Fermi Surface (CF-FS) at $ν= 1/2$, and we show that the deformation of the (CF-FS) due to the density modulation can be at the origin of the observed transport anomalies for the experimental conditions. Our analysis is carried out particularly for the non-local case which corresponds to the SAW experiments. We introduce a new model of a deformed CF-FS. The model permits us to explain anomalous features of the response of the modulated 2DEG to the SAW near $ν= 1/2:$ namely the nonlinear wave vector dependence of the electron conductivity, the appearance of peaks in the SAW velocity shift and attenuation and the anisotropy of the effect, all of which originate from contributions to the conductivity tensor due to the regions of the CF-FS which are flattened by the applied modulation.

Acoustic Cyclotron Resonance and Giant High Frequency Magnetoacoustic Oscillations in Metals with Locally Flattened Fermi Surface

We consider the effect of local flattening on the Fermi surface (FS) of a metal upon geometric oscillations of the velocity and attenuation of ultrasonic waves in the neighborhood of the acoustic cyclotron resonance. It is shown that such peculiarities of the local geometry of the FS can lead to a significant enhancement of both cyclotron resonance and geometric oscillations. Characteristic features of the coupling of ultrasound to shortwave cyclotron waves arising due to the local flattening of the FS are analyzed. PACS numbers 71.18.+y; 72.15.Gd; 72.15.-v

On the Theory of a New Maximum Observed in dc Transport in Modulated Quantum Hall Systems Near ν=1/2

We propose a theory for the new maximum recently observed by Willett et al [1] in the longitudinal magnetoresistance of a weakly modulated two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) near filling factor ν=1/2 for the current driven along the modulation lines. The maximum is superimposed upon a new resonance structure. This occurs due to the geometric resonance of composite fermion cyclotron orbits with the period of modulation of the effective magnetic field. We propose here a semiquantitative theory of the dc magnetotransport in a modulated 2DEG near one half filling. Our analysis is based on the Boltzmann transport equation and it enables us to obtain this maximum which was neither observed nor predicted previously.

Electrodynamics of Nearly-Ferroelectric Superconductors

We report here the frequency-dependent optical response of a nearly ferroelectric superconductor (NFE-SC), like Na$_{x}$WO$_3$, or n-SrTiO$_3$. From $ω=0$, up to a critical frequency $ ω_{c1}$, Meissner-like field extinction occurs as in a usual superconductor. In the "anomalous" region $ω_{c1}<ω<ω_{TO}$ (the TO frequency of the NFE) the field propagates as in a dielectric. For $ω>ω_{TO}$ Meissner damping recurrs, then at higher $ω$, dielectriclike propagation is found. New optical anomalies (peaks in transmission) are predicted for a film of NFE-SC below the soft mode frequency $ω_{TO}$. These effects are due to including the contribution of the NFE displacement current in the solution of the coupled Maxwell, lattice and London equations. Quantitative calculations are given for the NFE-SC n-SrTiO$_3 $ to illustrate this.

Theory of the dc Magnetotransport in Laterally Modulated Quantum Hall Systems Near Filling $ν={1/2}$

A quasiclassical theory for dc magnetotransport in a modulated quantum Hall system near filling factor $ν={1/2}$ is presented. A weak one-dimensional electrostatic potential acts on the two-dimensional electron gas. Closed form analytic expressions are obtained for the resistivity $ρ_\perp$ corresponding to a current at right angles to the direction of the modulation lines as well as a smaller component $ρ_{||}$ for a current along the direction of the modulation lines. It is shown that both resistivity components are affected by the presence of the modulation. Numerical results are presented for $ρ_\perp$ and $ρ_{||}$ and show reasonable agreement with the results of recent experiments.

Theory of Luminescent Emission in Nanocrystal ZnS:Mn with an Extra Electron

We consider the effect of an extra electron injected into a doped quantum dot $ZnS:Mn^{2+}$. The Coulomb interaction and the exchange interaction between the extra electron and the states of the Mn ion will mix the wavefunctions, split the impurity energy levels, break the previous selection rules and change the transition probabilities. Using this model of an extra electron in the doped quantum dot, we calculated the energy and the wavefunctions, the luminescence probability and the transition lifetime and compare with the experiments. Our calculation shows that two orders of magnitudes of lifetime shortening can occur in the transition $^4T_1-^6A_1$ when an extra electron is present.

Hybrid Exciton State in Quantum Dot- Dendrite System: The Green Functions

A model is proposed to study the hybrid exciton in a quantum dot-dendrimer systems. The semiconductor organic hybrid exciton is studied using a "real space" Green's function method and a diagrammatic technique. The energy of the hybrid exciton as well as the Green function matrix elements have been calculated for different quantum dot-dendrimer systems, and the method can be applied for systems with different structures. Using the double-time Green's functions the optical processes can be calculated. The optical properties of the systems are controllable by the size and structure of the QD-dendrimer systems.

Symmetries and Decoherence of Two-Component Confined Atomic Clouds: Study of the Atomic Echo in the two-component Bose-Einstein Condensate

Implications of the internal symmetries on the dynamics of the trapped two-component atomic vapors are discussed. In the cases of $^{87}$Rb (bosons) as well as of $^{40}$K (fermions) trapped in the two hyperfine states, the intrinsic $su(2)$ symmetry can be realized with a very good precision. Such a symmetry protects the global operators, which are the generators of the symmetry, from any decoherence. The case of boson-fermion mixture is discussed as well. The role of external factors, breaking the symmetry, in inducing the decoherence of the global operators is considered. It is shown that, the loss of the correlations is not faster than the rates of the induced heating or losses, provided the noise is characterized by short correlation length. The case of the extrinsic long-ranged fluctuations is also considered. Intrinsic mechanisms of decoherence of the correlators of the condensate operators of the two-component condensate are analyzed. The atomic echo is discussed as a test for the reversibility of the phase diffusion effect. The intensity and the profile of the multiple echo are calculated numerically as well as analytically.

Theory of Coexistence of Superconductivity and Ferroelectricity : A Dynamical Symmetry Model

We propose and investigate a model for the coexistence of Superconductivity (SC) and Ferroelectricity (FE) based on the dynamical symmetries $su(2)$ for the pseudo-spin SC sector, $h(4)$ for the displaced oscillator FE sector, and $su(2) \otimes h(4) $ for the composite system. We assume a minimal symmetry-allowed coupling, and simplify the hamiltonian using a double mean field approximation (DMFA). A variational coherent state (VCS) trial wave-function is used for the ground state: the energy, and the relevant order parameters for SC and FE are obtained. For positive sign of the SC-FE coupling coefficient, a non-zero value of either order parameter can suppress the other (FE polarization suppresses SC and vice versa). This gives some support to "Matthias' Conjecture" [1964], that SC and FE tend to be mutually exclusive. For such a Ferroelectric Superconductor we predict: a) the SC gap $Δ$ (and $T_c $) will increase with increasing applied pressure when pressure quenches FE as in many ferroelectrics, and b) the FE polarization will increase with increaesing magnetic field up to $H_c $. The last result is equivalent to the prediction of a new type of Magneto-Electric Effect in a coexistent SC-FE material. Some discussion will be given of the relation of these results to the cuprate superconductors.

Implications of SU(2) symmetry on the dynamics of population difference in the two-component atomic vapor

We present an exact many body solution for the dynamics of the population difference $N_2-N_1$ induced by an rf-field in the two-component atomic cloud characterized by equal scattering lengths. This situation is very close to the actual JILA experiments with the two-component $^{87}$Rb vapor. We show that no intrinsic decoherence exists for $N_2-N_1$, provided the exact SU(2) symmetry holds. This contrasts with finite dissipation of the normal modes even in the presence of the SU(2) symmetry. The intrinsic decoherence for \$N_2-N_1$ may occur as long as deviations from the exact SU(2) symmetry are taken into account. Such decoherence, however, should be characterized by very long times governed by the smallness of the deviations from the symmetry. We suggest testing the evolution of $N_2-N_1$ by conducting echo-type experiments.

Scattering of Hot Excitons in Quantum Wells

The scattering probabilities of hot excitons in narrow quantum wells (QWs)are obtained. The exciton-phonon matrix element is considered by using an envelope function Hamiltonian approach in the strong quantization limit where the QW width is smaller than the exciton bulk Bohr radius. The Fröhlich-like interaction is taken into account and the contribution of the confined and interface modes to the scattering probability are calculated as a function of quantum well width, electron and hole effective masses, and in-plane center-of-mass kinetic energy. Inter- and intra-subband excitonic transitions are discussed in term of the phonon scalar potential selectionrules. It is shown that even parity electrostatic potential states for confined and interface modes give the main contribution to the excitonic scattering rate. The consequences of exciton relaxation and scattering probability present for the multiphonon resonance Raman scattering in narrow QWs are briefly discussed.

Quantum Dot Lattice Embedded in An Organic Medium: Hybrid Exciton State and Optical Response

We propose a new model to implement organic exciton-semiconductor exciton hybridization by embedding a semiconductor quantum dot array into an organic medium. A Wannier-Mott transfer exciton is formed when the exciton in each semiconductor dot interacts via the multipole-multipole coupling with other excitons in the different dtos of the array. A new hybrid exciton appears in the system owing to strong dipole-dipole interaction of the Frenkel exciton of the organic molecules with the Wannier Mott transfer exciton of the quantum dot array. This hybrid exciton has both a large oscillator strength (Frenkel like) and a large Bohr radius (Wannier like). At resonance between these two types of excitons, the optical non-linearity is very large and can be controlled by changing parameters of the system such as dot radius and dot spacing.

Geometric Resonance in Modulated Quantum Hall Systems Near $ ν= 1/2$

We propose a theory for the new effects recently observed by Willett et al [1] in the magnetoresistance of a weakly modulated two dimensional electron gas near filling factor 1/2. Minima in transverse magnetoresistance and maxima in longitudinal magnetoresistance at the same magnetic field producing the new resonance structure are reported. The structure occurs due to geometric resonance of the composite fermion cyclotron orbits with the modulation period of the effective magnetic field $ B_{eff} $ due to the applied density modulation. The transverse minimum occurs due to the inhomogeneity in the field $ B_{eff} $ in the presence of density modulations, whereas the longitudinal maximum can arise due to a shape-effect (distortion) of the composite fermion Fermi surface (CF-FS). Thus the minima and maxima reflect different physical mechanisms. PACS numbers 71.10 Pm, 73.40 Hm, 73.20 Dx {}

Deformed Fermi Surface Theory of Magneto-Acoustic Anomaly in Modulated Quantum Hall Systems Near $/nu=1/2$

We introduce a new generic model of a deformed Composite Fermion-Fermi Surface (CF-FS) for the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect near $/nu=1/2$ in the presence of a periodic density modulation. Our model permits us to explain recent Surface Acoustic Wave observations of anisotropic anomalies [1,2] in sound velocity and attenuation- appearance of peaks and anisotropy - which originate from contributions to the conductivity tensor due to regions of the CF-FS which are flattened by the applied modulation. The calculated magnetic field and wave vector dependence of the CF conductivity, velocity shift and attenuation agree with experiments.
