Curvature squared invariants in six-dimensional ${\cal N} = (1,0)$ supergravity

We describe the supersymmetric completion of several curvature-squared invariants for ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supergravity in six dimensions. The construction of the invariants is based on a close interplay between superconformal tensor calculus and recently developed superspace techniques to study general off-shell supergravity-matter couplings. In the case of minimal off-shell Poincar\'e supergravity based on the dilaton-Weyl multiplet coupled to a linear multiplet as a conformal compensator, we describe off-shell supersymmetric completions for all the three possible purely gravitational curvature-squared terms in six dimensions: Riemann, Ricci, and scalar curvature squared. A linear combination of these invariants describes the off-shell completion of the Gauss-Bonnet term, recently presented in arXiv:1706.09330. We study properties of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet supergravity, which plays a central role in the effective low-energy description of $\alpha^\prime$-corrected string theory compactified to six dimensions, including a detailed analysis of the spectrum about the ${\rm AdS}_3\times {\rm S}^3$ solution. We also present a novel locally superconformal invariant based on a higher-derivative action for the linear multiplet. This invariant, which includes gravitational curvature-squared terms, can be defined both coupled to the standard-Weyl or dilaton-Weyl multiplet for conformal supergravity. In the first case, we show how the addition of this invariant to the supersymmetric Einstein-Hilbert term leads to a dynamically generated cosmological constant and non-supersymmetric (A)dS$_6$ solutions. In the dilaton-Weyl multiplet, the new off-shell invariant includes Ricci and scalar curvature-squared terms and possesses a nontrivial dependence on the dilaton field.

Non-conformal supercurrents in six dimensions

Non-conformal supercurrents in six dimensions are described, which contain the trace of the energy-momentum tensor and the gamma-trace of the supersymmetry current amongst their component fields. Within the superconformal approach to ${\cal N} = (1, 0)$ supergravity, we present various distinct non-conformal supercurrents, one of which is associated with an ${\cal O}(2)$ (or linear) multiplet compensator, while another with a tensor multiplet compensator. We also derive an infinite class of non-conformal supercurrents involving ${\cal O}(n)$ multiplets with $n > 2$. As an illustrative example we construct the relaxed hypermultiplet in supergravity. Finally, we put forward a non-conformal supercurrent in the ${\cal N} = (2, 0)$ supersymmetric case.

Chiral anomalies in six dimensions from harmonic superspace

We develop a superfield approach to compute chiral anomalies in general ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric gauge theories in six dimensions. Within the harmonic-superspace formulation for these gauge theories, the anomalous contributions to the effective action only come from matter and ghost hypermultiplets. By studying the short-distance behaviour of the propagator for the hypermultiplet coupled to a background vector multiplet, we compute the covariant and consistent chiral anomalies. We also provide a superform formulation for the non-abelian anomalous current multiplet in general ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric gauge theories.

New superconformal multiplets and higher derivative invariants in six dimensions

Within the framework of six-dimensional ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ conformal supergravity, we introduce new off-shell multiplets ${\cal O}{}^{*}(n)$, where $n=3,4,\dots,$ and use them to construct higher-rank extensions of the linear multiplet action. The ${\cal O}{}^{*}(n)$ multiplets may be viewed as being dual to well-known superconformal ${\cal O}(n)$ multiplets. We provide prepotential formulations for the ${\cal O}(n)$ and ${\cal O}{}^{*}(n)$ multiplets coupled to conformal supergravity. For every ${\cal O}{}^{*}(n)$ multiplet, we construct a higher derivative invariant which is superconformal on arbitrary superconformally flat backgrounds. We also show how our results can be used to construct new higher derivative actions in supergravity.

Gauss-Bonnet supergravity in six dimensions

The supersymmetrization of curvature squared terms is important in the study of the low-energy limit of compactified superstrings where a distinguished role is played by the Gauss-Bonnet combination, which is ghost-free. In this letter, we construct its off-shell ${\cal N} = (1, 0)$ supersymmetrization in six dimensions for the first time. By studying this invariant together with the supersymmetric Einstein-Hilbert term we confirm and extend known results of the $\alpha'$-corrected string theory compactified to six dimensions. Finally, we analyze the spectrum about the ${\rm AdS}_3\times{\rm S}^3$ solution.

The component structure of conformal supergravity invariants in six dimensions

In the recent paper arXiv:1606.02921, the two invariant actions for 6D $N=(1,0)$ conformal supergravity were constructed in superspace, corresponding to the supersymmetrization of $C^3$ and $C\Box C$. In this paper, we provide the translation from superspace to the component formulation of superconformal tensor calculus, and we give the full component actions of these two invariants. As a second application, we build the component form for the supersymmetric $F\Box F$ action coupled to conformal supergravity. Exploiting the fact that the $N=(2,0)$ Weyl multiplet has a consistent truncation to $N=(1,0)$, we then verify that there is indeed only a single $N=(2,0)$ conformal supergravity invariant and reconstruct most of its bosonic terms by uplifting a certain linear combination of $N=(1,0)$ invariants.

Minimal $\cal N=4$ topologically massive supergravity

Using the superconformal framework, we construct a new off-shell model for $\cal N=4$ topologically massive supergravity which is minimal in the sense that it makes use of a single compensating vector multiplet and involves no free parameter. As such, it provides a counterexample to the common lore that two compensating multiplets are required within the conformal approach to supergravity with eight supercharges in diverse dimensions. This theory is an off-shell $\cal N=4$ supersymmetric extension of chiral gravity. All of its solutions correspond to non-conformally flat superspaces. Its maximally supersymmetric solutions include the so-called critical (4,0) anti-de Sitter superspace introduced in arXiv:1205.4622, and well as warped critical (4,0) anti-de Sitter superspaces. We also propose a dual formulation for the theory in which the vector multiplet is replaced with an off-shell hypermultiplet. Upon elimination of the auxiliary fields belonging to the hypermultiplet and imposing certain gauge conditions, the dual action reduces to the one introduced in arXiv:1605.00103.

Invariants for minimal conformal supergravity in six dimensions

We develop a new off-shell formulation for six-dimensional conformal supergravity obtained by gauging the 6D ${\cal N} = (1, 0)$ superconformal algebra in superspace. This formulation is employed to construct two invariants for 6D ${\cal N} = (1, 0)$ conformal supergravity, which contain $C^3$ and $C\Box C$ terms at the component level. Using a conformal supercurrent analysis, we prove that these exhaust all such invariants in minimal conformal supergravity. Finally, we show how to construct the supersymmetric $F \Box F$ invariant in curved superspace.

The anomalous current multiplet in 6D minimal supersymmetry

For supersymmetric gauge theories with eight supercharges in four, five and six dimensions, a conserved current belongs to the linear multiplet. In the case of six-dimensional $\cal N=(1,0)$ Poincar\'e supersymmetry, we present a consistent deformation of the linear multiplet which describes chiral anomalies. This is achieved by developing a superform formulation for the deformed linear multiplet. In the abelian case, we compute a nonlocal effective action generating the gauge anomaly.

Higher derivative couplings and massive supergravity in three dimensions

We develop geometric superspace settings to construct arbitrary higher derivative couplings (including R^n terms) in three-dimensional supergravity theories with N=1,2,3 by realising them as conformal supergravity coupled to certain compensators. For all known off-shell supergravity formulations, we construct supersymmetric invariants with up to and including four derivatives. As a warming-up exercise, we first give a new and completely geometric derivation of such invariants in N=1 supergravity. Upon reduction to components, they agree with those given in arXiv:0907.4658 and arXiv:1005.3952. We then carry out a similar construction in the case of N=2 supergravity for which there exist two minimal formulations that differ by the choice of compensating multiplet: (i) a chiral scalar multipet; (ii) a vector multiplet. For these formulations all four derivative invariants are constructed in completely general and gauge independent form. For a general supergravity model (in the N=1 and minimal N=2 cases) with curvature-squared and lower order terms, we derive the superfield equations of motion, linearise them about maximally supersymmetric backgrounds and obtain restrictions on the parameters that lead to models for massive supergravity. We use the non-minimal formulation for N = 2 supergravity (which corresponds to a complex linear compensator) to construct a novel consistent theory of massive supergravity. In the case of N = 3 supergravity, we employ the off-shell formulation with a vector multiplet as compensator to construct for the first time various higher derivative invariants. These invariants may be used to derive models for N = 3 massive supergravity. As a bi-product of our analysis, we also present superfield equations for massive higher spin multiplets in (1,0), (1,1) and (2,0) anti-de Sitter superspaces.

Conformal supergravity in five dimensions: New approach and applications

We develop a new off-shell formulation for five-dimensional (5D) conformal supergravity obtained by gauging the 5D superconformal algebra in superspace. An important property of the conformal superspace introduced is that it reduces to the superconformal tensor calculus (formulated in the early 2000's) upon gauging away a number of superfluous fields. On the other hand, a different gauge fixing reduces our formulation to the SU(2) superspace of arXiv:0802.3953, which is suitable to describe the most general off-shell supergravity-matter couplings. Using the conformal superspace approach, we show how to reproduce practically all off-shell constructions derived so far, including the supersymmetric extensions of $R^2$ terms, thus demonstrating the power of our formulation. Furthermore, we construct for the first time a supersymmetric completion of the Ricci tensor squared term using the standard Weyl multiplet coupled to an off-shell vector multiplet. In addition, we present several procedures to generate higher-order off-shell invariants in supergravity, including higher-derivative ones. The covariant projective multiplets proposed in arXiv:0802.3953 are lifted to conformal superspace, and a manifestly superconformal action principle is given. We also introduce unconstrained prepotentials for the vector multiplet, the ${\cal{O}}(2)$ multiplet (i.e., the linear multiplet without central charge) and ${\cal{O}}(4+n)$ multiplets, with $n=0,1,\dots$ Superform formulations are given for the BF action and the non-abelian Chern-Simons action. Finally, we describe locally supersymmetric theories with gauged central charge in conformal superspace.

Symmetries of curved superspace in five dimensions

We develop a formalism to construct supersymmetric backgrounds within the superspace formulation for five-dimensional (5D) conformal supergravity given in arXiv:0802.3953. Our approach is applicable to any off-shell formulation for 5D minimal Poincare and anti-de Sitter supergravity theories realized as the Weyl multiplet coupled with two compensators. For those superspace backgrounds which obey the equations of motion for (gauged) supergravity, we naturally reproduce the supersymmetric solutions constructed a decade ago by Gauntlett et al. For certain supersymmetric backgrounds with eight supercharges, we construct a large family of off-shell supersymmetric sigma models such that the superfield Lagrangian is given in terms of the Kahler potential of a real analytic Kahler manifold.

Supergravity-matter actions in three dimensions and Chern-Simons terms

We study off-shell N-extended Yang-Mills multiplets coupled to conformal supergravity in three spacetime dimensions. Superform formulations are presented for the non-Abelian Chern-Simons actions in the cases N=1, 2, 3, and the corresponding component actions are explicitly worked out. Such a Chern-Simons action does not exist for N=4. In the latter case, a superform formulation is given for the BF term that describes the coupling of two Abelian vector multiplets with self-dual and anti-self-dual superfield strengths respectively. The superform results obtained are used to construct linear multiplet action principles in the cases N=2, 3, 4. The N=3 and N=4 actions are demonstrated to be universal in the sense that all known off-shell supergravity-matter systems (with the exception of pure conformal supergravity) may be described using such an action. Starting from the N=3 and N=4 Abelian vector multiplets, we also construct composite O(2) multiplets which are analogues of the four-dimensional construction of an N=2 reduced chiral scalar engineered from the improved tensor multiplet. Using these composites, we present the superfield equations of motion for N=3 and N=4 anti-de Sitter and topologically massive supergravity theories. We also sketch the construction of a large family of higher derivative couplings for N=3 and N=4 vector multiplets.

On supersymmetric Chern-Simons-type theories in five dimensions

We present a closed-form expression for the supersymmetric non-Abelian Chern-Simons action in conventional five-dimensional N=1 superspace. Our construction makes use of the superform formalism to generate supersymmetric invariants. Similar ideas are applied to construct supersymmetric actions for off-shell supermultiplets with an intrinsic central charge. In particular, the large tensor multiplet is described in superspace for the first time.

N=6 superconformal gravity in three dimensions from superspace

A unique feature of N=6 conformal supergravity in three dimensions is that the super Cotton tensor W^{IJKL} can equivalently be viewed, via the Hodge duality, as the field strength of an Abelian vector multiplet, W^{IJ}. Using this observation and the conformal superspace techniques developed in arXiv:1305.3132 and arXiv:1306.1205, we construct the off-shell action for N=6 conformal supergravity. The complete component action is also worked out.

Conformal supergravity in three dimensions: Off-shell actions

Using the off-shell formulation for N-extended conformal supergravity in three dimensions, which has recently been presented in arXiv:1305.3132, we construct superspace actions for conformal supergravity theories with N<6. For each of the cases considered, we work out the complete component action as well as the gauge transformation laws of the fields belonging to the Weyl supermultiplet. The N=1 and N=2 component actions derived coincide with those proposed by van Nieuwenhuizen and Rocek in the mid-1980s. The off-shell N=3, N=4 and N=5 supergravity actions are new results. Upon elimination of the auxiliary fields, these actions reduce to those constructed by Lindstrom and Rocek in 1989 (and also by Gates and Nishino in 1993).

Conformal supergravity in three dimensions: New off-shell formulation

We propose a new off-shell formulation for N-extended conformal supergravity in three spacetime dimensions. Our construction is based on the gauging of the N-extended superconformal algebra in superspace. Covariant constraints are imposed such that the algebra of covariant derivatives is given in terms of a single curvature superfield which turns out to be the super Cotton tensor. An immediate corollary of this construction is that the curved superspace is conformally flat if and only if the super Cotton tensor vanishes. Upon degauging of certain local symmetries, our formulation is shown to reduce to the conventional one with the local structure group SL(2,R) x SO(N).
