Gauge/Gravity Duality and the Black Hole Interior

We present a further argument that typical black holes with field theory duals have firewalls at the horizon. This argument makes no reference to entanglement between the black hole and any distant system, and so is not evaded by identifying degrees of freedom inside the black hole with those outside. We also address the ER=EPR conjecture of Maldacena and Susskind, arguing that the correlations in generic highly entangled states cannot be geometrized as a smooth wormhole.

An Apologia for Firewalls

We address proposed alternatives to the black hole firewall. We show that embedding the interior Hilbert space of an old black hole into the Hilbert space of the early radiation is inconsistent, as is embedding the semi-classical interior of an AdS black hole into any dual CFT Hilbert space. We develop the use of large AdS black holes as a system to sharpen the firewall argument. We also reiterate arguments that unitary non-local theories can avoid firewalls only if the non-localities are suitably dramatic.

Black Holes: Complementarity or Firewalls?

We argue that the following three statements cannot all be true: (i) Hawking radiation is in a pure state, (ii) the information carried by the radiation is emitted from the region near the horizon, with low energy effective field theory valid beyond some microscopic distance from the horizon, and (iii) the infalling observer encounters nothing unusual at the horizon. Perhaps the most conservative resolution is that the infalling observer burns up at the horizon. Alternatives would seem to require novel dynamics that nevertheless cause notable violations of semiclassical physics at macroscopic distances from the horizon.

The $a$-theorem and the Asymptotics of 4D Quantum Field Theory

We study the possible IR and UV asymptotics of 4D Lorentz invariant unitary quantum field theory. Our main tool is a generalization of the Komargodski-Schwimmer proof for the $a$-theorem. We use this to rule out a large class of renormalization group flows that do not asymptote to conformal field theories in the UV and IR. We show that if the IR (UV) asymptotics is described by perturbation theory, all beta functions must vanish faster than $(1/|\lnμ|)^{1/2}$ as $μ\to 0$ ($μ\to \infty$). This implies that the only possible asymptotics within perturbation theory is conformal field theory. In particular, it rules out perturbative theories with scale but not conformal invariance, which are equivalent to theories with renormalization group pseudocycles. Our arguments hold even for theories with gravitational anomalies. We also give a non-perturbative argument that excludes theories with scale but not conformal invariance. This argument holds for theories in which the stress-energy tensor is sufficiently nontrivial in a technical sense that we make precise.

Bulk and Transhorizon Measurements in AdS/CFT

We discuss the construction of bulk operators in asymptotically AdS spacetimes, including the interiors of AdS black holes. We use this to address the question "If Schrodinger's cat were behind the horizon of an AdS black hole, could we determine its state by a measurement in the dual CFT?"

Large-density field theory, viscosity, and "$2k_F$" singularities from string duals

We analyze systems where an effective large-N expansion arises naturally in gauge theories without a large number of colors: a sufficiently large charge density alone can produce a perturbative string ('tHooft) expansion. One example is simply the well-known NS5/F1 system dual to $AdS_3\times T^4\times S^3$, here viewed as a 5+1 dimensional theory at finite density. This model is completely stable, and we find that the existing string-theoretic solution of this model yields two interesting results. First, it indicates that the shear viscosity is not corrected by $α'$ effects in this system. For flow perpendicular to the F1 strings the viscosity to entropy ratio take the usual value $1/4π$, but for flow parallel to the F1's it vanishes as $T^2$ at low temperature. Secondly, it encodes singularities in correlation functions coming from low-frequency modes at a finite value of the momentum along the $T^4$ directions. This may provide a strong coupling analogue of finite density condensed matter systems for which fermionic constituents of larger operators contribute so-called "$2k_F$" singularities. In the NS5/F1 example, stretched strings on the gravity side play the role of these composite operators. We explore the analogue for our system of the Luttinger relation between charge density and the volume bounded by these singular surfaces. This model provides a clean example where the string-theoretic UV completion of the gravity dual to a finite density field theory plays a significant and calculable role.

Comment on [arXiv:1106.1417] "Small Lorentz violations in quantum gravity: do they lead to unacceptably large effects?"

A recent paper by Gambini, Rastgoo and Pullin [arXiv:1106.1417 investigates the important issue of constraints from Lorentz invariance on Planck scale physics, arguing that the classic analysis of Collins, Perez, Sudarsky, Urrutia and Vucetich \cite{cpsuv} is not generally valid. We argue that the new work is based on models that do not capture the relevant physics, and that almost all models of observable high energy Lorentz violation, and proposed Lorentz-violating theories of quantum gravity, are ruled out by low energy tests; the only known exceptions are based on supersymmetry.

Dual Purpose Landscaping Tools: Small Extra Dimensions in AdS/CFT

We propose a class of AdS/CFT dual pairs which have small internal dimensions on the gravity side. Starting from known Freund-Rubin AdS/CFT dual pairs, we use 7-branes to nearly cancel the curvature energy of the internal dimensions while maintaining their stabilization. This leads to a new corner of the landscape - a class of AdS solutions with a hierarchically large AdS radius - with a dual field theory given (implicitly) by the infrared limit of a concrete brane construction involving D3-branes, 7-branes, and curvature. We first construct a class of hierarchical AdS5/CFT4 dual pairs with a simple formula for the number of degrees of freedom which we interpret in the dual QFT. We then generalize these to AdS4/CFT3 duals, and suggest extensions of the method to obtain de Sitter solutions.

Towards a holographic marginal Fermi liquid

We present an infinite class of 2+1 dimensional field theories which, after coupling to semi-holographic fermions, exhibit strange metallic behavior in a suitable large $N$ limit. These theories describe lattices of hypermultiplet defects interacting with parity-preserving supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories with $U(N) \times U(N)$ gauge groups at levels $\pm k$. They have dual gravitational descriptions in terms of lattices of probe M2 branes in $AdS_4 \times S^7/Z_k$ (for $N \gg 1, N \gg k^5$) or probe D2 branes in $AdS_4 \times CP^3$ (for $N \gg k \gg 1, N \ll k^5$). We discuss several challenges one faces in maintaining the success of these models at finite $N$, including backreaction of the probes in the gravity solutions and radiative corrections in the weakly coupled field theory limit.

Wilson Loop Renormalization Group Flows

The locally BPS Wilson loop and the pure gauge Wilson loop map under AdS/CFT duality to string world-sheet boundaries with standard and alternate quantizations of the world-sheet fields. This implies an RG flow between the two operators, which we verify at weak coupling. Many additional loop operators exist at strong coupling, with a rich pattern of RG flows.

Holographic and Wilsonian Renormalization Groups

We develop parallels between the holographic renormalization group in the bulk and the Wilsonian renormalization group in the dual field theory. Our philosophy differs from most previous work on the holographic RG; the most notable feature is the key role of multi-trace operators. We work out the forms of various single- and double-trace flows. The key question, `what cutoff on the field theory corresponds to a radial cutoff in the bulk?' is left unanswered, but by sharpening the analogy between the two sides we identify possible directions.

These lectures are an introduction to gauge/gravity duality, presented at TASI 2010. The first three sections present the basics, focusing on $AdS_5 \times S^5$. The last section surveys a variety of ways to generate duals of reduced symmetry.

Semi-Holographic Fermi Liquids

We show that the universal physics of recent holographic non-Fermi liquid models is captured by a semi-holographic description, in which a dynamical boundary field is coupled to a strongly coupled conformal sector having a gravity dual. This allows various generalizations, such as a dynamical exponent and lattice and impurity effects. We examine possible relevant deformations, including multi-trace terms and spin-orbit effects. We discuss the matching onto the UV theory of the earlier work, and an alternate description in which the boundary field is integrated out.

Towards strange metallic holography

We initiate a holographic model building approach to `strange metallic' phenomenology. Our model couples a neutral Lifshitz-invariant quantum critical theory, dual to a bulk gravitational background, to a finite density of gapped probe charge carriers, dually described by D-branes. In the physical regime of temperature much lower than the charge density and gap, we exhibit anomalous scalings of the temperature and frequency dependent conductivity. Choosing the dynamical critical exponent $z$ appropriately we can match the non-Fermi liquid scalings, such as linear resistivity, observed in strange metal regimes. As part of our investigation we outline three distinct string theory realizations of Lifshitz geometries: from F theory, from polarised branes, and from a gravitating charged Fermi gas. We also identify general features of renormalisation group flow in Lifshitz theories, such as the appearance of relevant charge-charge interactions when $z \geq 2$. We outline a program to extend this model building approach to other anomalous observables of interest such as the Hall conductivity.

Matrix Models for the Black Hole Information Paradox

We study various matrix models with a charge-charge interaction as toy models of the gauge dual of the AdS black hole. These models show a continuous spectrum and power-law decay of correlators at late time and infinite N, implying information loss in this limit. At finite N, the spectrum is discrete and correlators have recurrences, so there is no information loss. We study these models by a variety of techniques, such as Feynman graph expansion, loop equations, and sum over Young tableaux, and we obtain explicitly the leading 1/N^2 corrections for the spectrum and correlators. These techniques are suggestive of possible dual bulk descriptions. At fixed order in 1/N^2 the spectrum remains continuous and no recurrence occurs, so information loss persists. However, the interchange of the long-time and large-N limits is subtle and requires further study.

Holography from Conformal Field Theory

The locality of bulk physics at distances below the AdS length is one of the remarkable aspects of AdS/CFT duality, and one of the least tested. It requires that the AdS radius be large compared to the Planck length and the string length. In the CFT this implies a large-N expansion and a gap in the spectum of anomalous dimensions. We conjecture that the implication also runs in the other direction, so that any CFT with a planar expansion and a large gap has a local bulk dual. For an abstract CFT we formulate the consistency conditions, most notably crossing symmetry, and show that the conjecture is true in a broad range of CFT's, to first nontrivial order in 1/N^2: any CFT with a gap and a planar expansion is generated via the AdS/CFT dictionary from a local bulk interaction. We establish this result by a counting argument on each side, and also investigate various properties of some explicit solutions.

A Matrix Model for Black Hole Thermalization

We present a matrix model which is intended as a toy model of the gauge dual of an AdS black hole. In particular, it captures the key property that at infinite $N$ correlators decay to zero on long time scales, while at finite $N$ this cannot happen. The model consists of a harmonic oscillator in the adjoint which acts as a heat bath for a particle in the fundamental representation. The Schwinger-Dyson equation reduces to a closed recursion relation, which we study by various analytical and numerical methods. We discuss some implications for the information problem.
