Classically psh and pluriharmonic functions on Berkovich spaces

First we extend the theory of subharmonic functions on smooth strictly $k$-analytic curves from Thuillier's thesis to the case of possibly singular analytic curves over a non-archimedean field. Classically psh functions are then defined as in complex geometry by using pullbacks to analytic curves (and requiring compatibility with base change). We give various properties of classically psh functions including a local and a global maximum principle. As a consequence, we show that the space of pluriharmonic functions on a quasi-compact Berkovich space is finite dimensional. As a technical tool, we use that a connected Berkovich space is connected by analytic curves.

On semipositive piecewise linear functions in non-archimedean analytic geometry

In this paper, we generalize results on Zhang's semipositive model metrics from the algebraic setting to strictly analytic spaces over a non-trivially valued non-Archimedean field. We prove stability under pointwise limits and under forming the maximum. We also prove the maximum principle. As tools, we use a local lifting theorem from the special fiber to the generic fiber of a model and an affinoid Bieri--Groves theorem.

Forms on Berkovich spaces based on harmonic tropicalizations

We introduce tropical skeletons for Berkovich spaces based on results of Ducros. Then we study harmonic functions on good strictly analytic spaces over a non-trivially valued non-Archimedean field. Chambert-Loir and Ducros introduced bigraded sheaves of smooth real-valued differential forms on Berkovich spaces by pulling back Lagerberg forms with respect to tropicalization maps. We give a new approach in which we allow pullback by more general harmonic tropicalizations to get a larger sheaf of differential forms with essentially the same properties, but with a better cohomological behavior. A crucial ingredient is that tropical varieties arising from harmonic tropicalization maps are balanced.

Dolbeault Cohomology of Graphs and Berkovich Curves

We introduce real-valued $(p,q)$-forms on weighted metric graphs with boundary similar to Lagerberg forms on polyhedral spaces. We compute the Dolbeault cohomology and prove Poincaré duality. Using Thuillier's thesis, the skeleton of a strictly semistable formal curve is canonically a weighted metric graph with boundary. We use that and our companion paper on weakly smooth forms to compute the Dolbeault cohomology for weakly smooth forms on any non-Archimedean compact rig-smooth analytic curve $X$, and prove Poincaré duality when $X$ is proper.

Non-Archimedean and tropical theta functions

We define a tropicalization procedure for theta functions on abelian varieties over a non-Archimedean field. We show that the tropicalization of a non-Archimedean theta function is a tropical theta function, and that the tropicalization of a non-Archimedean Riemann theta function is a tropical Riemann theta function, up to scaling and an additive constant. We apply these results to the construction of rational functions with prescribed behavior on the skeleton of a principally polarized abelian variety. We work with the Raynaud--Bosch--Lütkebohmert theory of non-Archimedean theta functions for abelian varieties with semi-abelian reduction.

Total $p$-differentials on schemes over $Z/p^2$

For a scheme $X$ defined over the length $2$ $p$-typical Witt vectors $W_2(k)$ of a characteristic $p$ field, we introduce total $p$-differentials which interpolate between Frobenius-twisted differentials and Buium's $p$-differentials. They form a sheaf over the reduction $X_0$, and behave as if they were the sheaf of differentials of $X$ over a deeper base below $W_2(k)$. This allows us to construct the analogues of Gauss-Manin connections and Kodaira-Spencer classes as in the Katz-Oda formalism. We make connections to Frobenius lifts, Borger-Weiland's biring formalism, and Deligne--Illusie classes.

A rigid analytic proof that the Abel-Jacobi map extends to compact-type models

Let $K$ be a non-Archimedean valued field with valuation ring $R$. Let $C_η$ be a $K$-curve with compact type reduction, so its Jacobian $J_η$ extends to an abelian $R$-scheme $J$. We prove that an Abel-Jacobi map $ι\colon C_η\to J_η$ extends to a morphism $C\to J$, where $C$ is a compact-type $R$-model of $J$, and we show this is a closed immersion when the special fiber of $C$ has no rational components. To do so, we apply a rigid-analytic "fiberwise" criterion for a finite morphism to extend to integral models, and geometric results of Bosch and Lütkebohmert on the analytic structure of $J_η$.

Tropical Skeletons

In this paper, we study the interplay between tropical and analytic geometry for closed subschemes of toric varieties. Let $K$ be a complete non-Archimedean field, and let $X$ be a closed subscheme of a toric variety over $K$. We define the tropical skeleton of $X$ as the subset of the associated Berkovich space $X^{\rm an}$ which collects all Shilov boundary points in the fibers of the Kajiwara--Payne tropicalization map. We develop polyhedral criteria for limit points to belong to the tropical skeleton, and for the tropical skeleton to be closed. We apply the limit point criteria to the question of continuity of the canonical section of the tropicalization map on the multiplicity-one locus. This map is known to be continuous on all torus orbits; we prove criteria for continuity when crossing torus orbits. When $X$ is schön and defined over a discretely valued field, we show that the tropical skeleton coincides with a skeleton of a strictly semistable pair, and is naturally isomorphic to the parameterizing complex of Helm--Katz.

Diophantine and tropical geometry, and uniformity of rational points on curves

We describe recent work connecting combinatorics and tropical/non-Archimedean geometry to Diophantine geometry, particularly the uniformity conjectures for rational points on curves and for torsion packets of curves. The method of Chabauty--Coleman lies at the heart of this connection, and we emphasize the clarification that tropical geometry affords throughout the theory of $p$-adic integration, especially to the comparison of analytic continuations of $p$-adic integrals and to the analysis of zeros of integrals on domains admitting monodromy.

Uniform bounds for the number of rational points on curves of small Mordell--Weil rank

Let $X$ be a curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over a number field $F$ of degree $d = [F:Q]$. The conjectural existence of a uniform bound $N(g,d)$ on the number $\#X(F)$ of $F$-rational points of $X$ is an outstanding open problem in arithmetic geometry, known by [CHM97] to follow from the Bombieri--Lang conjecture. A related conjecture posits the existence of a uniform bound $N_{{\rm tors},\dagger}(g,d)$ on the number of geometric torsion points of the Jacobian $J$ of $X$ which lie on the image of $X$ under an Abel--Jacobi map. For fixed $X$ this quantity was conjectured to be finite by Manin--Mumford, and was proved to be so by Raynaud [Ray83]. We give an explicit uniform bound on $\#X(F)$ when $X$ has Mordell--Weil rank $r\leq g-3$. This generalizes recent work of Stoll on uniform bounds on hyperelliptic curves of small rank to arbitrary curves. Using the same techniques, we give an explicit, unconditional uniform bound on the number of $F$-rational torsion points of $J$ lying on the image of $X$ under an Abel--Jacobi map. We also give an explicit uniform bound on the number of geometric torsion points of $J$ lying on $X$ when the reduction type of $X$ is highly degenerate. Our methods combine Chabauty--Coleman's $p$-adic integration, non-Archimedean potential theory on Berkovich curves, and the theory of linear systems and divisors on metric graphs.

Skeletons and tropicalizations

Let $K$ be a complete, algebraically closed non-archimedean field with ring of integers $K^\circ$ and let $X$ be a $K$-variety. We associate to the data of a strictly semistable $K^\circ$-model $\mathscr X$ of $X$ plus a suitable horizontal divisor $H$ a skeleton $S(\mathscr X,H)$ in the analytification of $X$. This generalizes Berkovich's original construction by admitting unbounded faces in the directions of the components of H. It also generalizes constructions by Tyomkin and Baker--Payne--Rabinoff from curves to higher dimensions. Every such skeleton has an integral polyhedral structure. We show that the valuation of a non-zero rational function is piecewise linear on $S(\mathscr X, H)$. For such functions we define slopes along codimension one faces and prove a slope formula expressing a balancing condition on the skeleton. Moreover, we obtain a multiplicity formula for skeletons and tropicalizations in the spirit of a well-known result by Sturmfels--Tevelev. We show a faithful tropicalization result saying roughly that every skeleton can be seen in a suitable tropicalization. We also prove a general result about existence and uniqueness of a continuous section to the tropicalization map on the locus of tropical multiplicity one.

Nonarchimedean geometry, tropicalization, and metrics on curves

We develop a number of general techniques for comparing analytifications and tropicalizations of algebraic varieties. Our basic results include a projection formula for tropical multiplicities and a generalization of the Sturmfels-Tevelev multiplicity formula in tropical elimination theory to the case of a nontrivial valuation. For curves, we explore in detail the relationship between skeletal metrics and lattice lengths on tropicalizations and show that the maps from the analytification of a curve to the tropicalizations of its toric embeddings stabilize to an isometry on finite subgraphs. Other applications include generalizations of Speyer's well-spacedness condition and the Katz-Markwig-Markwig results on tropical j-invariants.

This is an introduction to the theory of Witt vectors. It includes a construction of the Witt rings, the Frobenius and Verschiebung endomorphisms, the canonical map from W to W^2 (its lambda-algebra structure), the relation to strict p-rings, and an account of the Artin-Hasse exponential.

Lifting harmonic morphisms I: metrized complexes and Berkovich skeleta

Let K be an algebraically closed, complete non-Archimedean field. The purpose of this paper is to carefully study the extent to which finite morphisms of algebraic K-curves are controlled by certain combinatorial objects, called skeleta. A skeleton is a metric graph embedded in the Berkovich analytification of X. A skeleton has the natural structure of a metrized complex of curves. We prove that a finite morphism of K-curves gives rise to a finite harmonic morphism of a suitable choice of skeleta. We use this to give analytic proofs of stronger "skeletonized" versions of some foundational results ofLiu-Lorenzini, Coleman, and Liu on simultaneous semistable reduction of curves. We then consider the inverse problem of lifting finite harmonic morphisms of metrized complexes to morphisms of curves over K. We prove that every tamely ramified finite harmonic morphism of Λ-metrized complexes of k-curves lifts to a finite morphism of K-curves. If in addition the ramification points are marked, we obtain a complete classification of all such lifts along with their automorphisms. This generalizes and provides new analytic proofs of earlier results of Saïdi and Wewers. As an application, we discuss the relationship between harmonic morphisms of metric graphs and induced maps between component groups of Néron models, providing a negative answer to a question of Ribet motivated by number theory. This article is the first in a series of two. The second article contains several applications of our lifting results to questions about lifting morphisms of tropical curves.

Lifting harmonic morphisms II: tropical curves and metrized complexes

In this paper we prove several lifting theorems for morphisms of tropical curves. We interpret the obstruction to lifting a finite harmonic morphism of augmented metric graphs to a morphism of algebraic curves as the non-vanishing of certain Hurwitz numbers, and we give various conditions under which this obstruction does vanish. In particular we show that any finite harmonic morphism of (non-augmented) metric graphs lifts. We also give various applications of these results. For example, we show that linear equivalence of divisors on a tropical curve C coincides with the equivalence relation generated by declaring that the fibers of every finite harmonic morphism from C to the tropical projective line are equivalent. We study liftability of metrized complexes equipped with a finite group action, and use this to classify all augmented metric graphs arising as the tropicalization of a hyperelliptic curve. We prove that there exists a d-gonal tropical curve that does not lift to a d-gonal algebraic curve. This article is the second in a series of two.

On the structure of nonarchimedean analytic curves

Let K be an algebraically closed, complete nonarchimedean field and let X be a smooth K-curve. In this paper we elaborate on several aspects of the structure of the Berkovich analytic space X^an. We define semistable vertex sets of X^an and their associated skeleta, which are essentially finite metric graphs embedded in X^an. We prove a folklore theorem which states that semistable vertex sets of X are in natural bijective correspondence with semistable models of X, thus showing that our notion of skeleton coincides with the standard definition of Berkovich. We use the skeletal theory to define a canonical metric on H(X^an) := X^an - X(K), and we give a proof of Thuillier's nonarchimedean Poincaré-Lelong formula in this language using results of Bosch and Lütkebohmert.

Optimal quotients of Jacobians with toric reduction and component groups

Let J be a Jacobian variety with toric reduction over a local field K. Let J -> E be an optimal quotient defined over K, where E is an elliptic curve. We give examples in which the functorially induced map Φ_J -> Φ_E on component groups of the Néron models is not surjective. This answers a question of Ribet and Takahashi. We also give various criteria under which Φ_J -> Φ_E is surjective, and discuss when these criteria hold for the Jacobians of modular curves.

The skeleton of the Jacobian, the Jacobian of the skeleton, and lifting meromorphic functions from tropical to algebraic curves

Let K be an algebraically closed field which is complete with respect to a nontrivial, non-Archimedean valuation and let Λbe its value group. Given a smooth, proper, connected K-curve X and a skeleton Γof the Berkovich analytification X^\an, there are two natural real tori which one can consider: the tropical Jacobian Jac(Γ) and the skeleton of the Berkovich analytification Jac(X)^\an. We show that the skeleton of the Jacobian is canonically isomorphic to the Jacobian of the skeleton as principally polarized tropical abelian varieties. In addition, we show that the tropicalization of a classical Abel-Jacobi map is a tropical Abel-Jacobi map. As a consequence of these results, we deduce that Λ-rational principal divisors on Γ, in the sense of tropical geometry, are exactly the retractions of principal divisors on X. We actually prove a more precise result which says that, although zeros and poles of divisors can cancel under the retraction map, in order to lift a Λ-rational principal divisor on Γto a principal divisor on X it is never necessary to add more than g extra zeros and g extra poles. Our results imply that a continuous function F:Γ-> R is the restriction to Γof -log|f| for some nonzero meromorphic function f on X if and only if F is a Λ-rational tropical meromorphic function, and we use this fact to prove that there is a rational map f : X --> P^3 whose tropicalization, when restricted to Γ, is an isometry onto its image.
