Chiral Nonet Mixing in pi pi Scattering

Pion pion scattering is studied in a generalized linear sigma model which contains two scalar nonets (one of quark-antiquark type and the other of diquark-antidiquark type) and two corresponding pseudoscalar nonets. An interesting feature concerns the mixing of the four isosinglet scalar mesons which yield poles in the scattering amplitude. Some realism is introduced by enforcing exact unitarity via the K-matrix method. It is shown that a reasonable agreement with experimental data is obtained up to about 1 GeV. The poles in the unitarized scattering amplitude are studied in some detail. The lowest pole clearly represents the sigma meson (or f0(600)) with a mass and decay width around 500 MeV. The second pole invites comparison with the f0(980) which has a mass around 1 GeV and decay width around 100 MeV. The third and fourth poles, resemble some of the isosinglet state in the complicated 1-2 GeV region. Some comparison is made to the situation in the usual SU(3) linear sigma model with a single scalar nonet.

Are three flavors special?

It has become clearer recently that the regular pattern of three flavor nonets describing the low spin meson multiplets seems to require some modification for the case of the spin 0 scalar mesons. One picture which has had some success, treats the scalars in a chiral Lagrangian framework and considers them to populate two nonets. These are, in turn, taken to result from the mixing of two "bare" nonets, one of which is of quark- antiquark type and the other of two quark- two antiquark type. Here we show that such a mixing is, before chiral symmetry breaking terms are included, only possible for three flavors. In other cases, the two types of structure can not have the same chiral symmetry transformation property. Specifically, our criterion would lead one to believe that scalar and pseudoscalar states containing charm would not have "four quark" admixtures. This work is of potential interest for constructing chiral Lagrangians based on exact chiral symmetry which is then broken by well known specific terms. It may also be of interest in studying some kinds of technicolor theories.

Perturbed S3 neutrinos

We study the effects of the perturbation which violates the permutation symmetry of three Majorana neutrinos but preserves the well known (23) interchange symmetry. This is done in the presence of an arbitrary Majorana phase which serves to insure the degeneracy of the three neutrinos at the unperturbed level.

Nonperturbative Results for Yang-Mills Theories

Some non perturbative aspects of the pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory are investigated assuming a specific form of the beta function, based on a recent modification by Ryttov and Sannino of the known one for supersymmetric gauge theories. The characteristic feature is a pole at a particular value of the coupling constant, g. First it is noted, using dimensional analysis, that physical quantities behave smoothly as one travels from one side of the pole to the other. Then it is argued that the form of the integrated beta function g(m), where m is the mass scale, determines the mass gap of the theory. Assuming the usual QCD value one finds it to be 1.67 GeV, which is in surprisingly good agreement with a quenched lattice calculation. A similar calculation is made for the supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory where the corresponding beta function is considered to be exact.

Doubly perturbed $S_3$ neutrinos and the $s_{13}$ mixing parameter

We further study a predictive model for the masses and mixing matrix of three Majorana neutrinos. At zeroth order the model yielded degenerate neutrinos and a generalized ``tribimaximal" mixing matrix. At first order the mass splitting was incorporated and the tribimaximal mixing matrix emerged with very small corrections but with a zero value for the parameter $s_{13}$. In the present paper a different, assumed weaker, perturbation is included which gives a non zero value for $s_{13}$ and further corrections to other quantities. These corrections are worked out and their consequences discussed under the simplifying assumption that the conventional CP violation phase vanishes. It is shown that the existing measurements of the parameter $s_{23}$ provide strong bounds on $s_{13}$ in this model.

Remark on pion scattering lengths

First it is shown that the tree amplitude for pion pion scattering in the minimal linear sigma model has an exact expression which is proportional to a geometric series in the quantity (s-$m_π^2$)/($m_B^2-m_π^2$), where $m_B$ is the sigma mass which appears in the Lagrangian and is the only a priori unknown parameter in the model. This induces an infinite series for every predicted scattering length in which each term corresponds to a given order in the chiral perturbation theory counting. It is noted that, perhaps surprisingly, the pattern, though not the exact values, of chiral perturbation theory predictions for both the isotopic spin 0 and isotopic spin 2 s-wave pion-pion scattering lengths to orders $p^2$, $p^4$ and $p^6$ seems to agree with this induced pattern. The values of the $p^8$ terms are also given for comparison with a possible future chiral perturation theory calculation. Further aspects of this approach and future directions are briefly discussed.

Simple two Higgs doublet model

We study a simple two Higgs doublet model which reflects, in a phenomenological way, the idea of compositeness for the Higgs sector. It is relatively predictive. In one scenario, it allows for a "hidden" usual Higgs particle in the 100 GeV region and a possible dark matter candidate.

Gauged linear sigma model and pion-pion scattering

A simple gauged linear sigma model with several parameters to take the symmetry breaking and the mass differences between the vector meson and the axial vector meson into account is considered here as a possibly useful template for the role of a light scalar in QCD as well as for (at a different scale) an effective Higgs sector for some recently proposed walking technicolor models. An analytic procedure is first developed for relating the Lagrangian parameters to four well established (in the QCD application) experimental inputs. One simple equation distinguishes three different cases:1. QCD with axial vector particle heavier than vector particle, 2. possible technicolor model with vector particle heavier than the axial vector one, 3. the unphysical QCD case where both the KSRF and Weinberg relations hold. The model is applied to the s-wave pion-pion scattering in QCD. Both the near threshold region and (with an assumed unitarization) theglobal region up to about 800 MeV are considered. It is noted that there is a little tension between the choice of bare sigma mass parameter for describing these two regions. If a reasonable globa fit is made, there is some loss of precision in the near threshold region.

Global aspects of the scalar meson puzzle

A generalized linear sigma model for low energy QCD is employed to study the quark structure of eight low lying scalar isomultiplets as well as eight low lying pseudoscalar isomultiplets. The model, building on earlier work, assumes the possible mixing of quark anti-quark states with others made of two quarks and two antiquarks. No {\it a priori} assumption is made about the quark contents of the states, which emerge as predictions. An amusing and contrasting pattern for the quark structure is found; the lighter conventional pseudoscalars are, as expected, primarily of two quark type whereas the lighter scalars have very large four quark admixtures. The new feature of the present paper compared to earlier ones in this series involves the somewhat subtle and complicated effects of SU(3) flavor breaking. They do not alter the general pattern of two quark vs. four quark mixing obtained in the SU(3)symmetric case but, of course, give a more detailed picture.

Exploration of a physical picture for the QCD scalar channel

A generalized linear sigma model is employed to study the quark structure of low lying scalar as well as pseudoscalar states. The model allows the possible mixing of quark anti-quark states with others made of two quarks and two antiquarks but no a priori assumption is made about the quark contents of the predicted physical states. Effects of SU(3) symmetry breaking are included. The lighter conventional pseudoscalars turn out to be primarily of two quark type whereas the lighter scalars have very large four quark admixtures.

Note on a sigma model connection with instanton dynamics

It is well known that the instanton approach to QCD generates an effective term which looks like a three flavor determinant of quark bilinears. This has the right behavior to explain the unusual mass and mixing of the $η(958)$ meson, as is often simply illustrated with the aid of a linear SU(3) sigma model. It is less well known that the instanton analysis generates another term which has the same transformation property but does not have a simple interpretation in terms of this usual linear sigma model. Here we point out that this term has an interpretation in a generalized linear sigma model containing two chiral nonets. The second chiral nonet is taken to correspond to mesons having two quarks and two antiquarks in their makeup. The generalized model seems to be useful for learning about the spectrum of low lying scalar mesons which have been emerging in the last few years. The physics of the new term is shown to be related to the properties of an "excited" $η'$ state present in the generalized model and for which there are some experimental candidates.

Scalar mesons from an effective Lagrangian approach

A brief discussion of the recent interest in light scalar mesons motivates the study of a generalized linear sigma model. In an SU(3) flavor invariant version of the model there is a prediction that the the lighter scalars have sizeable "four quark" content. It is further predicted that one of the singlet scalars should be exceptionally light. Due to the presence of scalar mesons, the model gives "controlled" corrections to the current algebra formula for threshold pion pion scattering. These corections act in the direction to improve agreement with current experiments.

Low energy scattering with a nontrivial pion

An earlier calculation in a generalized linear sigma model showed that the well-known current algebra formula for low energy pion pion scattering held even though the massless Nambu Goldstone pion contained a small admixture of a two-quark two-antiquark field. Here we turn on the pion mass and note that the current algebra formula no longer holds exactly. We discuss this small deviation and also study the effects of an SU(3) symmetric quark mass type term on the masses and mixings of the eight SU(3) multiplets in the model. We calculate the s wave scattering lengths, including the beyond current algebra theorem corrections due to the scalar mesons, and observe that the model can fit the data well. In the process, we uncover the way in which linear sigma models give controlled corrections (due to the presence of scalar mesons) to the current algebra scattering formula. Such a feature is commonly thought to exist only in the non-linear sigma model approach.

Two chiral nonet model with massless quarks

We present a detailed study of a linear sigma model containing one chiral nonet transforming under U(1)$_A$ as a quark-antiquark composite and another chiral nonet transforming as a diquark-anti diquark composite (or, equivalently from a symmetry point of view, as a two meson molecule). The model provides an intuitive explanation of a current puzzle in low energy QCD: Recent work has suggested the existence of a lighter than 1 GeV nonet of scalar mesons which behave like four quark composites. On the other hand, the validity of a spontaneously broken chiral symmetric description would suggest that these states be chiral partners of the light pseudoscalar mesons, which are two quark composites. The model solves the problem by starting with the two chiral nonets mentioned and allowing them to mix with each other. The input of physical masses in the SU(3) invariant limit for two scalar octets and an "excited" pion octet results in a mixing pattern wherein the light scalars have a large four quark content while the light pseudoscalars have a large two quark content. One light isosinglet scalar is exceptionally light. In addition, the pion pion scattering is also studied and the current algebra theorem is verified for massless pions which contain some four quark admixture.

Model for light scalars in QCD

We propose a systematic procedure to study a generalized linear sigma model which can give a physical picture of possible mixing between $q{\bar q}$ and $qq{\bar q}{\bar q}$ low lying spin zero states. In the limit of zero quark masses, we derive the model independent results for the properties of the Nambu Goldstone pseudoscalar particles. For getting information on the scalars it is necessary to make a specific choice of terms. We impose two plausible physical criteria - the modeling of the axial anomaly and the suppression of effective vertices representing too many fermion lines - for limiting the large number of terms which are allowed on general grounds. We calculate the tree-level spectrum based on the leading terms in our approach and find that it prominently exhibits a very low mass isosinglet scalar state. Finally we point out that the low energy result for scattering of pions continues to hold in the general version of the model.

Two or Four: A Hint from Scalar Mesons in Radiative phi Decays ?

In this write-up, we summarize our recent analysis of radiative decays involving light scalar mesons. Our analysis using the vector meson dominance model at tree level indicates that it may be difficult to distinguish $qq\bar{q}\bar{q}$ picture and $q\bar{q}$ picture for the light scalar nonet. Our result on the process of $ϕ\to π^0 ηγ$ shows that the derivative-type $f_0 K\bar{K}$ interaction reproduces experimental data below 950 GeV well, but gives a poor fit above 950 GeV, i.e., in the energy region around the mass of $a_0(980)$, but that the discrepancy can be compensated by the effect of the $K$ loop.

Alternative Large Nc Schemes and Chiral Dynamics

We compare the dependences on the number of colors of the leading pion pion scattering amplitudes using the single index quark field and two index quark fields. These are seen to have different relationships to the scattering amplitudes suggested by chiral dynamics which can explain the long puzzling pion pion s wave scattering up to about 1 GeV. This may be interesting for getting a better understanding of the large Nc approach as well as for application to recently proposed technicolor models.
