Toy Model for Breaking Super Gauge Theories at the Effective Lagrangian Level

We propose a toy model to illustrate how the effective Lagrangian for super QCD might go over to the one for ordinary QCD by a mechanism whereby the gluinos and squarks in the fundamental theory decouple below a given supersymmetry breaking scale $m$. The implementation of this approach involves a suitable choice of possible supersymmetry breaking terms. An amusing feature of the model is the emergence of the ordinary QCD degrees of freedom which were hidden in the auxiliary fields of the supersymmetric effective Lagrangian.

Multiflavor Massive Schwinger Model With Non-Abelian Bosonization

We revisit the treatment of the multiflavor massive Schwinger model by non-Abelian Bosonization. We compare three different approximations to the low-lying spectrum: i) reading it off from the bosonized Lagrangian (neglecting interactions), ii) semi-classical quantization of the static soliton, iii) approximate semi-classical quantization of the ``breather'' solitons. A number of new points are made in this process. We also suggest a different ``effective low-energy Lagrangian'' for the theory which permits easy calculation of the low-energy scattering amplitudes. It correlates an exact mass formula of the system with the requirement of the Mermin-Wagner theorem.

Generalization of the Bound State Model

In the bound state approach the heavy baryons are constructed by binding, with any orbital angular momentum, the heavy meson multiplet to the nucleon considered as a soliton in an effective meson theory. We point out that this picture misses an entire family of states, labeled by a different angular momentum quantum number, which are expected to exist according to the geometry of the three-body constituent quark model (for N_C=3). To solve this problem we propose that the bound state model be generalized to include orbitally excited heavy mesons bound to the nucleon. In this approach the missing angular momentum is ``locked-up'' in the excited heavy mesons. In the simplest dynamical realization of the picture we give conditions on a set of coupling constants for the binding of the missing heavy baryons of arbitrary spin. The simplifications made include working in the large M limit, neglecting nucleon recoil corrections, neglecting mass differences among different heavy spin multiplets and also neglecting the effects of light vector mesons.

Hidden Structure in a Lagrangian for Hyperfine Splitting of the Heavy Baryons

We investigate the hyperfine splitting of the heavy baryons in the bound-state approach. We start with an ordinary relativistic Lagrangian which has been extensively used to discuss finite mass corrections to the heavy limit predictions. It turns out that the dominant contribution arises from terms which do not manifestly break the heavy spin symmetry. The actual heavy spin violating terms are uncovered by carefully performing a 1/M expansion of this Lagrangian.

Simple Description of Pion-Pion Scattering to 1 GeV

Motivated by the 1/Nc expansion, we present a simple model of pion-pion scattering as a sum of a `current-algebra' contact term and resonant pole exchanges. The model preserves crossing symmetry as well as unitarity up to 1.2 GeV. Key features include chiral dynamics, vector meson dominance, a broad low energy scalar (sigma) meson and a `Ramsauer-Townsend' mechanism for the understanding of the 980 MeV region. We discuss in detail the `regularization' (corresponding to rescattering effects) necessary to make all these nice features work.

Effects of Symmetry Breaking on the Strong and Electroweak Interactions of the Vector Nonet

Starting from a chiral invariant and quark line rule conserving Lagrangian of pseudoscalar and vector nonets we introduce first and second order symmetry breaking as well as quark line rule violating terms and fit the parameters, at tree level, to many strong and electroweak processes. A number of predictions are made. The electroweak interactions are included in a manifestly gauge invariant manner. The resulting symmetry breaking pattern is discussed in detail. Specifically, for the ``strong'' interactions, we study all the vector meson masses and V -> ϕϕdecays, including isotopic spin violations. In the electroweak sector we study the { rho^0 , omega , phi } -> e^+e^- decays, { pi^+ , K^+ , K^0 } ``charge radii'', K_{l3} ``slope factor'' and the overall e^+e^- -> pi^+ pi^- process. It is hoped that the resulting model may be useful as a reasonable description of low energy physics in the range up to about 1 GeV.

Heavy Meson Radiative Decays and Light Vector Meson Dominance

Electromagnetic interactions are introduced in the effective chiral Lagrangian for heavy mesons which includes light vector particles. A suitable notion of vector meson dominance is formulated. The constraints on the heavy meson -light vector and heavy meson-light pseudoscalar coupling constants are obtained using experimental $D^* \ra D \, γ$ branching ratios. These constraints are compared with values estimated from semi-leptonic transition amplitudes as well as from extension of the light meson coupling pattern. Application to the heavy baryon spectrum in the ``bound state " model is made.

Excited Heavy Baryons in the Bound State Picture

The orbitally excited heavy quark baryons are studied in the Callan Klebanov bound state model with heavy spin symmetry. First, a compact description of the large $N_c$, infinite heavy quark mass bound state wavefunctions and the collective quantization is given. In order to study the kinematical corrections due to finite masses we motivate an approximate Schrodinger-like equation for the bound state. The effective potential in this equation is compared with the quadratic approximation (spherical harmonic oscillator) to it. This oscillator approximation is seen to be not very accurate. It is noted that the present experimental information cannot be even qualitatively understood with the usual light sector chiral Lagrangian containing only light pseudoscalar mesons. The addition of light vector mesons helps to overcome this problem.

Heavy Quark Solitons: Strangeness and Symmetry Breaking

We discuss the generalization of the Callan-Klebanov model to the case of heavy quark baryons. The light flavor group is considered to be $SU(3)$ and the limit of heavy spin symmetry is taken. The presence of the Wess-Zumino-Witten term permits the neat development of a picture , at the collective level, of a light diquark bound to a ``heavy" quark with decoupled spin degree of freedom. The consequences of $SU(3)$ symmetry breaking are discussed in detail. We point out that the $SU(3)$ mass splittings of the heavy baryons essentially measure the ``low energy" physics once more and that the comparison with experiment is satisfactory.
