Warped product spaces: Gromov hyperbolicity and identification of the visual boundary

In this paper, we consider warped product spaces $X\times_{\varphi}Y$, where $X$ is a complete geodesic Gromov hyperbolic space, $Y$ is a compact geodesic metric space, and the warping function $\varphi$ satisfies suitable exponential growth conditions. We prove that the warped product is Gromov hyperbolic and derive an explicit estimate for its hyperbolicity constant. We further establish a homeomorphism between its Gromov boundary and $\partial_GX\times Y$, with an explicit comparison formula for the visual metric on the Gromov boundary of $X\times_\varphi Y$ in terms of the visual metric $d_{\varepsilon, X}$ on $\partial_GX$ and $d_Y$ for suitable $\varepsilon>0$.

Geometric inequalities related to fractional perimeter: fractional Poincar\'e, isoperimetric, and boxing inequalities in metric measure spaces

In the setting of a complete, doubling metric measure space $(X,d,\mu)$ supporting a $(1,1)$-Poincar\'e inequality, we show that for all $0<\theta<1$, the following fractional Poincar\'e inequality holds for all balls $B$ and locally integrable functions $u$, $$ \int_{B}|u-u_B|d\mu\le C(1-\theta)\,\text{rad}(B)^\theta\int_{\tau B}\int_{\tau B}\frac{|u(x)-u(y)|}{d(x,y)^\theta\mu(B(x,d(x,y)))}d\mu(y)d\mu(x), $$ where $C\ge 1$ and $\tau\ge 1$ are constants depending only on the doubling and $(1,1)$-Poincar\'e inequality constants. Notably, this inequality features the scaling constant $(1-\theta)$ present in the Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu theory characterizing Sobolev functions via nonlocal functionals. From this inequality, we obtain a fractional relative isoperimetric inequality as well as global and local versions of a fractional boxing inequality, each featuring the same scaling constant $(1-\theta)$ and defined in terms of the fractional $\theta$-perimeter, and prove equivalences with the above fractional Poincar\'e inequality. We also show that $(X,d,\mu)$ supports a $(1,1)$-Poincar\'e inequality if and only if the above fractional Poincar\'e inequality holds for all $\theta$ sufficiently close to $1$. Under the additional assumption of lower Ahlfors $Q$-regularity of the measure $\mu$, we additionally use the aforementioned results to establish global inequalities, in the form of fractional isoperimetric and fractional Sobolev inequalities, which also feature the scaling constant $(1-\theta)$. Moreover, we prove that such inequalities are equivalent with the lower Ahlfors $Q$-regularity condition on the measure.

Trace and Extension Theorems for Besov Functions in Doubling Metric Measure Spaces

In the setting of a non-complete doubling metric measure space $(\Omega,d,\mu)$, we construct various bounded linear trace and extension operators for homogeneous and inhomogeneous Besov spaces $B^\alpha_{p,q}$. Equipping the boundary $\partial\Omega:=\overline\Omega\setminus\Omega$ with a measure which is codimension $\theta$ Ahlfors regular with respect to $\mu$, these operators take the form \[ T:B^\alpha_{p,q}(\Omega)\to B^{\alpha-\theta/p}_{p,q}(\partial\Omega),\quad E:B^\alpha_{p,q}(\partial\Omega)\to B^{\alpha+\theta/p}_{p,q}(\Omega). \] The trace operators are first constructed under the additional assumption that $\Omega$ is a uniform domain in its completion. We then use such results along with the technique of hyperbolic filling to remove this assumption in the case that $\Omega$ is bounded. This extends to the doubling setting some earlier results of Marcos and Saksman-Soto proven under the assumption that the ambient measure is Ahlfors regular.

Warped products, solid hyperbolic fillings, and the identity $D^{1,p} = N^{1,p} + \mathbb{R}$

We construct a large class of metric measure spaces $Z$ which satisfy the identity $D^{1,p}(Z) = N^{1,p}(Z) + \mathbb{R}$, i.e.\ any measurable function $u \colon Z \to \mathbb{R}$ with an $L^p$-integrable upper gradient is a constant term away from being $L^p$-integrable. To do so, we construct a family of hyperbolic fillings $\mathbb{H}_{\alpha, \beta}(Y)$, $\alpha, \beta \in (0, \infty)$, of a metric measure space $Y$, via a warped product of $Y$ with an exponentially weighted positive real line. We then show that for certain classes of $Y$, the above identity is satisfied for $Z=\mathbb{H}_{\alpha,\beta}(Y)$ when $1\le p\le \beta/\alpha$. We also show that under mild assumptions on $Y$, the warped product $\mathbb{H}_{\alpha, \beta}(Y)$ is Gromov hyperbolic as a metric space and the Gromov boundary of $\mathbb{H}_{\alpha, \beta}(Y)$ is quasisymmetric to $Y$.

Self-improvement of fractional Hardy inequalities in metric measure spaces via hyperbolic fillings

In this paper, we prove a self-improvement result for $(\theta,p)$-fractional Hardy inequalities, in both the exponent $1<p<\infty$ and the regularity parameter $0<\theta<1$, for bounded domains in doubling metric measure spaces. The key conceptual tool is a Caffarelli-Silvestre-type argument, which relates fractional Sobolev spaces on $Z$ to Newton-Sobolev spaces in the hyperbolic filling $\overline{X}_{\varepsilon}$ of $Z$ via trace results. Using this insight, it is shown that a fractional Hardy inequality in an open subset of $Z$ is equivalent to a classical Hardy inequality in the filling $\overline{X}_{\varepsilon}$. The main result is then obtained by applying a new weighted self-improvement result for $p$-Hardy inequalities. The exponent $p$ can be self-improved by a classical Koskela-Zhong argument, but a new theory of regularizable weights is developed to obtain the self-improvement in the regularity parameter $\theta$. This generalizes a result of Lehrb\"ack and Koskela on self-improvement of $d_\Omega^\beta$-weighted $p$-Hardy inequalities by allowing a much broader class of weights. Using the equivalence of fractional Hardy inequalities with Hardy inequalities in the fillings, we also give new examples of domains satisfying fractional Hardy inequalities.

Well-posedness of Dirichlet boundary value problems for reflected fractional $p$-Laplace-type inhomogeneous equations in compact doubling metric measure spaces

In this paper we consider the setting of a locally compact, non-complete metric measure space $(Z,d,\nu)$ equipped with a doubling measure $\nu$, under the condition that the boundary $\partial Z:=\overline{Z}\setminus Z$ (obtained by considering the completion of $Z$) supports a Radon measure $\pi$ which is in a $\sigma$-codimensional relationship to $\nu$ for some $\sigma>0$. We explore existence, uniqueness, comparison property, and stability properties of solutions to inhomogeneous Dirichlet problems associated with certain nonlinear nonlocal operators on $Z$. We also establish interior regularity of solutions when the inhomogeneity data is in an $L^q$-class for sufficiently large $q>1$, and verify a Kellogg-type property when the inhomogeneity data vanishes and the Dirichlet data is continuous.

Regularity of sets of finite fractional perimeter and nonlocal minimal surfaces in metric measure spaces

In the setting of a doubling metric measure space, we study regularity of sets with finite $s$-perimeter, that is, sets whose characteristic functions have finite Besov energy, with regularity parameter $0<s<1$ and exponent $p=1$. Following a result of Visintin in $\mathbb{R}^n$, we provide a sufficient condition for finiteness of the $s$-perimeter given in terms of the upper Minkowski codimension of the regularized boundary of the set. We also show that if a set has finite $s$-perimeter, then its measure-theoretic boundary has codimension $s$ Hausdorff measure zero. To the best of our knowledge, this result is new even in the Euclidean setting. By studying certain fat Cantor sets, we provide examples illustrating that the converses of these results do not hold in general. In the doubling metric measure space setting, we then consider minimizers of a nonlocal perimeter functional, extending the definition introduced by Caffarelli, Roquejoffre, and Savin in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and prove existence, uniform density, and porosity results for minimizers.

Characterization of the upper Assouad codimension

We present a new notion, the upper Aikawa codimension, and establish its equivalence with the upper Assouad codimension in a metric space with a doubling measure. To achieve this result, we first prove variant of a local fractional Hardy inequality.

Large-scale behaviour of Sobolev functions in Ahlfors regular metric measure spaces

In this paper, we study the behaviour at infinity of $p$-Sobolev functions in the setting of Ahlfors $Q$-regular metric measure spaces supporting a $p$-Poincar\'e inequality. By introducing the notions of sets which are $p$-thin at infinity, we show that functions in the homogeneous space $\dot N^{1,p}(X)$ necessarily have limits at infinity outside of $p$-thin sets, when $1\le p Q$, we show by example that uniqueness of limits at infinity may fail for functions in $\dot N^{1,p}(X)$. While functions in $\dot N^{1,p}(X)$ may not have any reasonable limit at infinity when $p=Q$, we introduce the notion of a $Q$-thick set at infinity, and characterize the limits of functions in $\dot N^{1,Q}(X)$ along infinite curves in terms of limits outside $Q$-thin sets and along $Q$-thick sets. By weakening the notion of a thick set, we show that a function in $\dot N^{1,Q}(X)$ with a limit along such an almost thick set may fail to have a limit along any infinite curve. While homogeneous $p$-Sobolev functions may have infinite limits at infinity when $p\ge Q$, we provide bounds on how quickly such functions may grow: when $p=Q$, functions in $\dot N^{1,p}(X)$ have sub-logarithmic growth at infinity, whereas when $p>Q$, such functions have growth at infinity controlled by $d(\cdot, O)^{1-Q/p}$, where $O$ is a fixed base point in $X$. For the inhomogeneous spaces $N^{1,p}(X)$, the phenomenon is different. We show that for $1\le p\le Q$, the limit of a function $u\in N^{1,p}(X)$ is zero outside of a $p$-thin set, whereas $\lim_{x\to+\infty}u(x)=0$ for all $u\in N^{1,p}(X)$ when $p>Q$.

Fine properties of metric space-valued mappings of bounded variation in metric measure spaces

Here we consider two notions of mappings of bounded variation (BV) from the metric measure space into the metric space; one based on relaxations of Newton-Sobolev functions, and the other based on a notion of AM-upper gradients. We show that when the target metric space is a Banach space, these two notions coincide with comparable energies, but for more general target metric spaces, the two notions can give different function-classes. We then consider the fine properties of BV mappings (based on the AM-upper gradient property), and show that when the target space is a proper metric space, then for a BV mapping into the target space, co-dimension $1$-almost every point in the jump set of a BV mapping into the proper space has at least two, and at most $k_0$, number of jump values associated with it, and that the preimage of balls around these jump values have lower density at least $\gamma$ at that point. Here $k_0$ and $\gamma$ depend solely on the structural constants associated with the metric measure space, and jump points are points at which the map is not approximately continuous.

Fractional maximal functions and mean oscillation on bounded doubling metric measure spaces

Let $(X,d,\mu)$ be a doubling metric measure space. We consider the behaviour of the fractional maximal function $M^\alpha$ for $0\leq \alpha 0$, we additionally assume that the space is bounded. We show that $M^\alpha$ is bounded from $BMO$ to $BLO$, a subclass of $BMO$, and maps $VMO$ to itself when $\mu$ has the annular decay property. We also show by means of examples that the action of $M^\alpha$ is not continuous on these function spaces.

Obstacle problems with double boundary condition for least gradient functions in metric measure spaces

In the setting of a metric space equipped with a doubling measure supporting a $(1,1)$-Poincar\'e inequality, we study the problem of minimizing the BV-energy in a bounded domain $\Omega$ of functions bounded between two obstacle functions inside $\Omega$, and whose trace lies between two prescribed functions on the boundary of $\Omega.$ If the class of candidate functions is nonempty, we show that solutions exist for continuous obstacles and continuous boundary data when $\Omega$ is a uniform domain whose boundary is of positive mean curvature in the sense of Lahti, Mal\'y, Shanmugalingam, and Speight (2019). While such solutions are not unique in general, we show the existence of unique minimal solutions. Our existence results generalize those of Ziemer and Zumbrun (1999), who studied this problem in the Euclidean setting with a single obstacle and single boundary condition.

Neumann problems for $p$-harmonic functions, and induced nonlocal operators in metric measure spaces

Following ideas of Caffarelli and Silvestre in~\cite{CS}, and using recent progress in hyperbolic fillings, we define fractional $p$-Laplacians $(-\Delta_p)^\theta$ with $0<\theta<1$ on any compact, doubling metric measure space $(Z,d,\nu)$, and prove existence, regularity and stability for the non-homogenous non-local equation $(-\Delta_p)^\theta u =f.$ These results, in turn, rest on the new existence, global H\"older regularity and stability theorems that we prove for the Neumann problem for $p$-Laplacians $\Delta_p$, $1<p<\infty$, in bounded domains of measure metric spaces endowed with a doubling measure that supports a Poincar\'e inequality. Our work also extends beyond the compact setting, and includes as special cases much of the previous results by other authors in the Euclidean, Riemannian and Carnot group settings. Unlike other recent contributions in the metric measure spaces context, our work does not rely on the assumption that $(Z,d,\nu)$ supports a Poincar\'e inequality.

Non-locality, non-linearity, and existence of solutions to the Dirichlet problem for least gradient functions in metric measure spaces

We study the Dirichlet problem for least gradient functions for domains in metric spaces equipped with a doubling measure and supporting a (1,1)-Poincar\'e inequality when the boundary of the domain satisfies a positive mean curvature condition. In this setting, it was shown by Mal\'y, Lahti, Shanmugalingam, and Speight that solutions exist for continuous boundary data. We extend these results, showing existence of solutions for boundary data that is approximable from above and below by continuous functions. We also show that for each $f\in L^1(\partial\Omega),$ there is a least gradient function in $\Omega$ whose trace agrees with $f$ at points of continuity of $f$, and so we obtain existence of solutions for boundary data which is continuous almost everywhere. This is in contrast to a result of Spradlin and Tamasan, who constructed an $L^1$-function on the unit circle which has no least gradient solution in the unit disk in $\mathbb{R}^2.$ Modifying the example of Spradlin and Tamasan, we show that the space of solvable $L^1$-functions on the unit circle is non-linear, even though the unit disk satisfies the positive mean curvature condition.
