Extremely high-energy bremsstrahlung in matter

The theory of bremsstrahlung $e \to eγ$ by extremely high energy electrons passing through ordinary matter has been qualitatively incomplete. We revisit the suppression of bremsstrahlung by the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect, here accounting for quantum disruption of that effect from pair production. Our analysis covers the full range of ultra-relativistic electron and photon energies (subject to a few simplifying approximations).

Calculating extremely high energy bremsstrahlung in matter

Ultra-relativistic electrons initiate electromagnetic showers in ordinary matter that evolve through bremsstrahlung and pair production. At very high energy, the quantum mechanical duration of bremsstrahlung becomes longer than the mean free time to elastically scatter from the medium, leading to a significant suppression known at the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. For some ranges of bremsstrahlung photon and initial electron energies $(k_γ,E)$, the duration becomes so long that it will also overlap with subsequent pair production by the bremsstrahlung photon, disrupting LPM suppression and drastically changing LPM predictions. We have previously calculated this change for extremely high energies ($k_γ\gg 2$ TeV or more, depending on the medium), for which the electron mass and medium-induced photon mass could be ignored. In this paper, we extend that analysis to lower (but still ultra-relativistic) energy by accounting for those masses, leading to a rich map of behavior in different regions of $(k_γ,E)$.

Revisiting extremely high energy QED bremsstrahlung in matter: large modifications to the LPM effect

Very high energy electrons initiate electromagnetic showers in ordinary matter that branch and multiply through bremsstrahlung and pair production. At extremely high energies, the quantum mechanical duration of these processes becomes longer than the mean free time to elastically scatter from the medium, which leads to a very significant suppression of bremsstrahlung (and pair production) known as the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. We revisit the LPM effect for bremsstrahlung of energy $k_γ$ from an electron of energy $E$. We find that there are very large corrections to the LPM bremsstrahlung rate for certain regions of $(k_γ,E)$ due to quantum overlap of bremsstrahlung and subsequent pair production. This possibility was first raised in the 1960s, when it was argued qualitatively that pair production would significantly decrease the bremsstrahlung rate in those regions of $(k_γ,E)$ compared to the already-suppressed LPM bremsstrahlung rate. We find the opposite -- quantum overlap of bremsstrahlung with pair production significantly *increases* the bremsstrahlung rate compared to the LPM calculation -- and we verify our qualitative arguments with an analytic calculation of the effect.

Likelihood and Correlation Analysis of Compton Form Factors for Deeply Virtual Exclusive Scattering on the Nucleon

A likelihood analysis of the observables in deeply virtual exclusive photoproduction off a proton target, $ep \rightarrow e' p' γ'$, is presented. Two processes contribute to the reaction: deeply virtual Compton scattering, where the photon is produced at the proton vertex, and the Bether-Heitler process, where the photon is radiated from the electron. We consider the unpolarized process for which the largest amount of data with all the kinematic dependences are available from corresponding datasets with unpolarized beams and unpolarized targets from Jefferson Lab. We provide and use a method which derives a joint likelihood of the Compton form factors, which parametrize the deeply virtual Compton scattering amplitude in QCD, for each observed combination of the kinematic variables defining the reaction. The unpolarized twist-two cross section likelihood fully constrains only three of the Compton form factors (CFFs). The impact of the twist-three corrections to the analysis is also explored. The derived likelihoods are explored using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. Using our proposed method we derive CFF error bars and covariances. Additionally, we explore methods which may reduce the magnitude of error bars/contours in the future.

Variational autoencoder inverse mapper for extraction of Compton form factors: Benchmarks and conditional learning

Deeply virtual exclusive scattering processes (DVES) serve as precise probes of nucleon quark and gluon distributions in coordinate space. These distributions are derived from generalized parton distributions (GPDs) via Fourier transform relative to proton momentum transfer. QCD factorization theorems enable DVES to be parameterized by Compton form factors (CFFs), which are convolutions of GPDs with perturbatively calculable kernels. Accurate extraction of CFFs from DVCS, benefiting from interference with the Bethe-Heitler (BH) process and a simpler final state structure, is essential for inferring GPDs. This paper focuses on extracting CFFs from DVCS data using a variational autoencoder inverse mapper (VAIM) and its constrained variant (C-VAIM). VAIM is shown to be consistent with Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods in extracting multiple CFF solutions for given kinematics, while C-VAIM effectively captures correlations among CFFs across different kinematic values, providing more constrained solutions. This study represents a crucial first step towards a comprehensive analysis pipeline towards the extraction of GPDs.

Chaotic exits from a weakly magnetized Schwarzschild black hole

A charged particle kicked from an initial circular orbit around a weakly magnetized Schwarzschild black hole undergoes transient chaotic motion before either getting captured by the black hole or escaping upstream or downstream with respect to the direction of the magnetic field. These final states form basins of attraction in the space of initial states. We provide a detailed numerical study of the basin structure of this initial state space. We find it to possess the peculiar Wada property: each of its basin boundaries is shared by all three basins. Using basin entropy as a measure, we show that uncertainty in predicting the final exit state increases with stronger magnetic interaction. We also present an approximate analytic expression of the critical escape energy for a vertically-kicked charged particle, and discuss how this depends on the strength of the magnetic interaction.
