The Innate Economic Preferences of Language Models

Language models increasingly settle real resource tradeoffs on behalf of principals yet their economic preferences remain unobserved. We demonstrate their generation rule is isomorphic to the random utility model of discrete choice. This allows internal logit scores to structurally identify preferences. Estimating risk attitudes across twelve models in a portfolio task reveals universal but heterogeneous risk aversion. Although models reject strictly dominated options, their elicited preferences fail invariance tests and violate the independence of irrelevant alternatives across varying experimental prompts. Finally, fine tuning establishes that a principal can explicitly engineer a target risk attitude.

Decoding Consumer Preferences Using Attention-Based Language Models

This paper proposes a new demand estimation method using attention-based language models. An encoder-only language model is trained in a two-stage process to analyze the natural language descriptions of used cars from a large US-based online auction marketplace. The approach enables semi-nonparametrically estimation for the demand primitives of a structural model representing the private valuations and market size for each vehicle listing. In the first stage, the language model is fine-tuned to encode the target auction outcomes using the natural language vehicle descriptions. In the second stage, the trained language model's encodings are projected into the parameter space of the structural model. The model's capability to conduct counterfactual analyses within the trained market space is validated using a subsample of withheld auction data, which includes a set of unique "zero shot" instances.

Constraints on Nonmetricity from Bounds on Lorentz Violation

Spacetime nonmetricity can be studied experimentally through its couplings to fermions and photons. We use recent high-precision searches for Lorentz violation to deduce first constraints involving the 40 independent nonmetricity components down to levels of order $10^{-43}$ GeV.

Classical-physics applications for Finsler $b$ space

The classical propagation of certain Lorentz-violating fermions is known to be governed by geodesics of a four-dimensional pseudo-Finsler $b$ space parametrized by a prescribed background covector field. This work identifies systems in classical physics that are governed by the three-dimensional version of Finsler $b$ space and constructs a geodesic for a sample non-constant choice for the background covector. The existence of these classical analogues demonstrates that Finsler $b$ spaces possess applications in conventional physics, which may yield insight into the propagation of SME fermions on curved manifolds.
