Fractional Laplacian Spectral Approach to Turbulence in a Dusty Plasma Monolayer

This work presents an analytical investigation of anomalous diffusion and turbulence in a dusty plasma monolayer, where energy transport across scales leads to the spontaneous formation of spatially disordered patterns. Many-body simulations of 10,000-particle dusty plasma monolayers are used to demonstrate how the global dynamics depend on the statistical properties of the dust assembly for realistic laboratory conditions. We find that disorder due to variations in the dust size distribution and charge-driven nonlocal interactions resulting in anomalous dust diffusion are key factors for the onset of instabilities. The resulting dynamics exhibit features of inertial turbulence over slightly more than half a decade of scales proportional or smaller than the Debye shielding length. These processes are examined analytically using a recently developed Fractional Laplacian Spectral (FLS) technique, which identifies the active energy channels as a function of scale, disorder concentration, and features of the nonlocal interactions. The predictions from the theoretical (spectral) analysis demonstrate agreement with the results from the many-body (kinetic) simulations, thus providing a powerful tool for the study of active turbulence.

Analysis of an approximation to a fractional extension problem

The purpose of this work is to study an approximation to an abstract Bessel-type problem, which is a generalization of the extension problem associated with fractional powers of the Laplace operator. Motivated by the success of such approaches in the analysis of time-stepping methods for abstract Cauchy problems, we adopt a similar framework, herein. The proposed method differs from many standard techniques, as we approximate the true solution to the abstract problem, rather than solve an associated discrete problem. The numerical method is shown to be consistent, stable, and convergent in an appropriate Banach space. These results are built upon well understood results from semigroup theory. Numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the theoretical results.

Numerical solution of degenerate stochastic Kawarada equations via a semi-discretized approach

The numerical solution of a highly nonlinear two-dimensional degenerate stochastic Kawarada equation is investigated. A semi-discretized approximation in space is comprised on arbitrary nonuniform grids. Exponential splitting strategies are then applied to advance solutions of the semi-discretized scheme over adaptive grids in time. It is shown that key quenching solution features including the positivity and monotonicity are well preserved under modest restrictions. The numerical stability of the underlying splitting method is also maintained without any additional restriction. Computational experiments are provided to not only illustrate our results, but also provide further insights into the global nonlinear convergence of the numerical solution.

The quenching of solutions to time-space fractional Kawarada problems

Quenching solutions to a Kawarada problem with a Caputo time-fractional derivative and a fractional Laplacian are considered. The solutions to such problems may only exist locally in time when quenching occurs. Quenching and non-quenching solutions are shown to remain positive and be monotonically increasing in time under minor restrictions. Conditions for quenching to occur are demonstrated and shown to depend on the domain size.

Convergence of an operator splitting scheme for abstract stochastic evolution equations

In this paper we study the convergence of a Lie-Trotter operator splitting for stochastic semi-linear evolution equations in a Hilbert space. The abstract Hilbert space setting allows for the consideration of convergence of the approximation for both the original and spatially discretized problems. It is known that the strong convergence of this scheme is classically of half-order, at best. We demonstrate that this is in fact the optimal order of convergence in the proposed setting, with the actual order being dependent upon the regularity of noise collected from applications.

On a Nonuniform Crank-Nicolson Scheme for Solving the Stochastic Kawarada Equation via Arbitrary Grids

This paper studies a nonuniform finite difference method for solving the degenerate Kawarada quenching-combustion equation with a vibrant stochastic source. Arbitrary grids are introduced in both space and time via adaptive principals to accommodate the uncertainty and singularities involved. It is shown that, under proper constraints on mesh step sizes, the positivity, monotonicity of the solution, and numerical stability of the scheme developed are well preserved. Numerical experiments are given to illustrate our conclusions.
