Two-Sphere Partition Functions and Gromov-Witten Invariants

Many N=(2,2) two-dimensional nonlinear sigma models with Calabi-Yau target spaces admit ultraviolet descriptions as N=(2,2) gauge theories (gauged linear sigma models). We conjecture that the two-sphere partition function of such ultraviolet gauge theories -- recently computed via localization by Benini et al. and Doroud et al. -- yields the exact Kähler potential on the quantum Kähler moduli space for Calabi-Yau threefold target spaces. In particular, this allows one to compute the genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants for any such Calabi-Yau threefold without the use of mirror symmetry. More generally, when the infrared superconformal fixed point is used to compactify string theory, this provides a direct method to compute the spacetime Kähler potential of certain moduli (e.g., vector multiplet moduli in type IIA), exactly in α'. We compute these quantities for the quintic and for Rødland's Pfaffian Calabi-Yau threefold and find agreement with existing results in the literature. We then apply our methods to a codimension four determinantal Calabi-Yau threefold in P^7, recently given a nonabelian gauge theory description by the present authors, for which no mirror Calabi-Yau is currently known. We derive predictions for its Gromov-Witten invariants and verify that our predictions satisfy nontrivial geometric checks.

Perturbative Corrections to Kahler Moduli Spaces

We propose a general formula for perturbative-in-alpha' corrections to the Kahler potential on the quantum Kahler moduli space of Calabi-Yau n-folds, for any n, in their asymptotic large volume regime. The knowledge of such perturbative corrections provides an important ingredient needed to analyze the full structure of this Kahler potential, including nonperturbative corrections such as the Gromov-Witten invariants of the Calabi-Yau n-folds. We argue that the perturbative corrections take a universal form, and we find that this form is encapsulated in a specific additive characteristic class of the Calabi-Yau n-fold which we call the log Gamma class, and which arises naturally in a generalization of Mukai's modified Chern character map. Our proposal is inspired heavily by the recent observation of an equality between the partition function of certain supersymmetric, two-dimensional gauge theories on a two-sphere, and the aforementioned Kahler potential. We further strengthen our proposal by comparing our findings on the quantum Kahler moduli space to the complex structure moduli space of the corresponding mirror Calabi-Yau geometry.

Gauge/Gravity Duality in Heterotic String Theory

Gravity duals for little string theories --- which give rise to four-dimensional theories that undergo permanent confinement in the infrared --- have not been studied in great detail. We address this question in the framework of heterotic SO(32) and E_8 x E_8 string theory, constructing these backgrounds by wrapping heterotic five-branes on calibrated two-cycles of non-Kahler resolved conifolds. Related to deformations of the underlying little string theories, we find numerous analytic solutions preserving N = 1 supersymmetry in four-dimensions. These theories all have non-abelian global symmetries that generally arise from both the heterotic vector bundle and from certain orbifold states. In the decoupling limit, we argue that the gravity duals are given by non-Kahler manifolds that have both blown-up two-cycles and three-cycles at the origin. We argue this following certain duality sequences that include M-theory torsional manifolds at an intermediate step, which help us to construct new type I' gauge/gravity duality pairs. In the M-theory duality frame, we also elucidate new sequences of flips and flops.

Black Hole Monodromy and Conformal Field Theory

The analytic structure of solutions to the Klein-Gordon equation in a black hole background, as represented by monodromy data, is intimately related to black hole thermodynamics. It encodes the "hidden conformal symmetry" of a non-extremal black hole, and it explains why features of the inner event horizon appear in scattering data such as greybody factors. This indicates that hidden conformal symmetry is generic within a universality class of black holes.

Black Hole Scattering from Monodromy

We study scattering coefficients in black hole spacetimes using analytic properties of complexified wave equations. For a concrete example, we analyze the singularities of the Teukolsky equation and relate the corresponding monodromies to scattering data. These techniques, valid in full generality, provide insights into complex-analytic properties of greybody factors and quasinormal modes. This leads to new perturbative and numerical methods which are in good agreement with previous results.

Nonabelian 2D Gauge Theories for Determinantal Calabi-Yau Varieties

The two-dimensional supersymmetric gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) with abelian gauge groups and matter fields has provided many insights into string theory on Calabi--Yau manifolds of a certain type: complete intersections in toric varieties. In this paper, we consider two GLSM constructions with nonabelian gauge groups and charged matter whose infrared CFTs correspond to string propagation on determinantal Calabi-Yau varieties, furnishing another broad class of Calabi-Yau geometries in addition to complete intersections. We show that these two models -- which we refer to as the PAX and the PAXY model -- are dual descriptions of the same low-energy physics. Using GLSM techniques, we determine the quantum Kähler moduli space of these varieties and find no disagreement with existing results in the literature.

Computing the Spectrum of a Heterotic Flux Vacuum

We compute the massless spectra of a set of flux vacua of the heterotic string. The vacua we study include well-known non-Kahler T^2-fibrations over K3 with SU(3) structure and intrinsic torsion. Following gauged linear sigma models of these vacua into phases governed by asymmetric Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds allows us to compute the spectrum using generalizations of familiar LG-orbifold techniques. We study several four- and six-dimensional examples with N=2 spacetime supersymmetry in detail.

N=1 Sigma Models in AdS_4

We study sigma models in AdS_4 with global N=1 supersymmetry and find that they differ significantly from their flat-space cousins -- the target space is constrained to be a Kahler manifold with an exact Kahler form, the superpotential transforms under Kahler transformations, the space of supersymmetric vacua is generically a set of isolated points even when the superpotential vanishes, and the R-symmetry is classically broken by the cosmological constant. Remarkably, the exactness of the Kahler class is also required for the sigma model to arise as a decoupling limit of N=1 supergravity, and ensures the vanishing of gravitational anomalies. As simple applications of these results, we argue that fields with AdS_4 scale masses are ubiquitous in, for example, type IIB N=1 AdS_4 vacua stabilized near large volume; we also show that the Affleck-Dine-Seiberg runaway of N_f < N_c SQCD is regulated by considering the theory in AdS_4.

SUSY Enhancements in (0,4) Deformations of AdS_3/CFT_2

We discuss a marginal deformation of the SL(2,R) x SU(2) x U(1)^4 WZW model, which describes string theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4, that corresponds to warping the S^3 factor. This deformation breaks part of the N=(4,4) supersymmetry of the undeformed dual CFT to N=(0,4) supersymmetry. In the spirit of work by Giveon, Kutasov, and Seiberg, we construct the asymptotic spacetime symmetry algebra from worldsheet operators and find a restoration of (4,4) supersymmetry at discrete values of the deformation parameter. We explain this result from various perspectives: the worldsheet, supergravity, and from the singular D1-D5 CFT. The supergravity analysis includes an asymptotic symmetry computation of the level of the affine SU(2) R-symmetry, which arises purely from B-field contributions.

String Theory on Warped AdS_3 and Virasoro Resonances

We investigate aspects of holographic duals to time-like warped AdS_3 space-times--which include Gödel's universe--in string theory. Using worldsheet techniques similar to those that have been applied to AdS_3 backgrounds, we are able to identify space-time symmetry algebras that act on the dual boundary theory. In particular, we always find at least one Virasoro algebra with computable central charge. Interestingly, there exists a dense set of points in the moduli space of these models in which there is actually a second commuting Virasoro algebra, typically with different central charge than the first. We analyze the supersymmetry of the backgrounds, finding related enhancements, and comment on possible interpretations of these results. We also perform an asymptotic symmetry analysis at the level of supergravity, providing additional support for the worldsheet analysis.

Nearing the Horizon of a Heterotic String

It is argued that recent developments point to the existence of an AdS_3 x S^2 x T^5 holographic dual for the 2D CFT living on the worldsheet of N coincident heterotic strings in a T^5 compactification, which can in turn be described by an exact worldsheet CFT. A supergravity analysis is shown to imply that the global supergroup is Osp(4^*|4), with 16 supercharges and an affine extension given, surprisingly, by a nonlinear N=8 2D superconformal algebra. Possible supergroups with 16 supercharges are also found to match the expected symmetries for T^n compactification with 0<=n<=7.

Linear Models for Flux Vacua

We construct worldsheet descriptions of heterotic flux vacua as the IR limits of N=2 gauge theories. Spacetime torsion is incorporated via a 2d Green-Schwarz mechanism in which a doublet of axions cancels a one-loop gauge anomaly. Manifest (0,2) supersymmetry and the compactness of the gauge theory instanton moduli space suggest that these models, which include Fu-Yau models, are stable against worldsheet instanton effects, implying that they, like Calabi-Yaus, may be smoothly extended to solutions of the exact beta functions. Since Fu-Yau compactifications are dual to KST-type flux compactifications, this provides a microscopic description of these IIB RR-flux vacua.

Towards the Massless Spectrum of Non-Kahler Heterotic Compactifications

Fu and Yau constructed the first smooth family of gauge bundles over a class of non-Kahler, complex 3-folds that are solutions to Strominger's system, the heterotic supersymmetry constraints with nonzero H-flux. In this paper, we begin the study of the massless spectrum arising from compactification using this construction by counting zero modes of the linearized equations of motion for the gaugino in the supergravity approximation. We rephrase the question in terms of a cohomology problem and show that for a trivial gauge bundle, this cohomology reduces to the Dolbeault cohomology of the 3-fold, which we then compute.

Falling D0-Branes in 2D Superstring Theory

In N=1, 2D superstring theory in the linear dilaton background, there exists falling D0-branes that are described by time-dependent boundary states. These falling D0-brane boundary states can be obtained by adapting the FZZT boundary states of N=2 Super Liouville Field Theory (SLFT) to the case of the N=1, 2D superstring. In particular, we find that there are four stable, falling D0-branes (two branes and two anti-branes) in the Type 0A projection and two unstable ones in the Type 0B projection, leaving us with a puzzle for the matrix model dual of the theory.

Collective Field Description of Matrix Cosmologies

We study the Das-Jevicki collective field description of arbitrary classical solutions in the c=1 matrix model, which are believed to describe nontrivial spacetime backgrounds in 2d string theory. Our analysis naturally includes the case of a Fermi droplet cosmology: a finite size droplet of Fermi fluid, made up of a finite number of eigenvalues. We analyze properties of the coordinates in which the metric in the collective field theory is trivial, and comment on the form of the interaction terms in these coordinates.
