Algebraic Structures on Graphs Joined by Edges

Let the join of two graphs be the union of two disjoint graphs connected by $j$ edges in a one-to-one manner. In previous work by Gyurov and Pinzon, which generalized the results of Badura and Rara, the determinant of the adjacency matrix of two $j$-joined graphs was decomposed to sums of determinants of these graphs with vertex deletions or directed graph handles. In this paper, we find the necessary and sufficient properties of a graph $G$ so that for any graph $H$, the determinant of $G$ joined with $H$ and $H$ joined with $G$ is equal to the determinant of $H$. Subsequently, we define a homomorphism from a quotient of graphs with the $j$-join operation to the monoid of integer matrices under multiplication. We demonstrate through examples that this homomorphism allows us to more easily calculate determinants of chains of joined graphs. This generalizes the work done on determinants of grids and cylinders done in various other works.

Generators for Group Homology and a Vanishing Conjecture

Letting $G=F/R$ be a finitely-presented group, Hopf's formula expresses the second integral homology of $G$ in terms of $F$ and $R$. Expanding on previous work, we explain how to find generators of $H_2(G;\mathbb{F}_p)$. The context of the problem, which is related to a conjecture of Quillen, is presented, as well as example calculations.

Unstable analogues of the Lichtenbaum-Quillen conjecture

This survey is mostly concerned with unstable analogues of the Lichtenbaum-Quillen Conjecture. The Lichtenbaum-Quillen Conjecture (now implied by the Voevodsky-Rost Theorem) attempts to describe the algebraic K-theory of rings of integers in number fields in terms of much more accessible "etale models". Suitable versions of the conjecture predict the cohomology of infinite general linear groups of rings of S-integers over suitable number fields; our survey focuses on an unstable version of this form of the conjecture.

An algorithm for low dimensional group homology

Given a finitely presented group $G$, Hopf's formula expresses the second integral homology of $G$ in terms of generators and relators. We give an algorithm that exploits Hopf's formula to estimate $H_2(G;k)$, with coefficients in a finite field k, and give examples using $G=SL_2$ over specific rings of integers. These examples are related to a conjecture of Quillen.
