Severe Constraints on New Physics Explanations of the MiniBooNE Excess

The MiniBooNE experiment has recently reported an anomalous 4.5$σ$ excess of electron-like events consistent with $ν_e$ appearance from a $ν_μ$ beam at short-baseline. Given the lack of corresponding $ν_μ$ disappearance observations, required in the case of oscillations involving a sterile flavor, there is strong motivation for alternative explanations of this anomaly. We consider the possibility that the observed electron-like signal may actually be due to hypothetical new particles, which do not involve new sources of neutrino production or oscillations. We find that the electron-like event energy and angular distributions in the full MiniBooNE data-set, including neutrino mode, antineutrino mode, and beam dump mode, severely limit, and in some cases rule out, new physics scenarios as an explanation for the observed neutrino and antineutrino mode excesses. Specifically, scenarios in which the new particle decays (visibly or semi-visibly) or scatters elastically in the detector are strongly disfavored. Using generic kinematic arguments, this paper extends the existing MiniBooNE results and interpretations to exhaustively constrain previously unconsidered new physics signatures and emphasizes the power of the MiniBooNE beam dump search to further constrain models for the excess.

Signatures of Pseudo-Dirac Dark Matter at High-Intensity Neutrino Experiments

We (re)consider the sensitivity of past (LSND) and future (JSNS^2) beam dump neutrino experiments to two models of MeV-scale pseudo-Dirac dark matter. Both LSND and JSNS^2 are close (24-30 m) to intense sources of light neutral mesons which may decay to dark matter via interactions involving a light mediator or dipole operators. The dark matter can then scatter or decay inside of the nearby detector. We show that the higher beam energy of JSNS^2 and resulting $η$ production can improve on the reach of LSND for light-mediator models with dark matter masses greater than $m_π/2$. Further, we find that both existing LSND and future JSNS^2 measurements can severely constrain the viable parameter space for a recently-proposed model of dipole dark matter which could explain the 3.5 keV excess reported in observations of stacked galaxy clusters and the Galactic Center.

Optimizing the $^{8}$Li yield for the IsoDAR Neutrino Experiment

The focus of this paper is on optimizing the electron-antineutrino source for the IsoDAR (Isotope Decay at Rest) experimental program. IsoDAR will perform sensitive short-baseline neutrino oscillation and electroweak measurements, among other Beyond Standard Model searches, in combination with KamLAND and/or other suitable detectors. IsoDAR will rely on the high-$Q$ $β^-$ decay of the $^{8}$Li isotope for producing electron-antineutrinos, created mainly via neutron capture in an isotopically enriched $^{7}$Li sleeve surrounding the Be target. In particular, this paper examines the performance, defined in terms of absolute $^{8}$Li (or, equivalently, electron-antineutrino) production rate, of various candidate sleeve materials, including a lithium-fluoride, beryllium-fluoride mixture ("FLiBe") sleeve and a homogeneous mixture of lithium and beryllium ("Li-Be"). These studies show that the $^{8}$Li yield can be increased substantially by employing a Li-Be sleeve and therefore motivate significant changes to the nominal IsoDAR design.

Annual Modulation of Cosmic Relic Neutrinos

The cosmic neutrino background (CvB), produced about one second after the Big Bang, permeates the Universe today. New technological advancements make neutrino capture on beta-decaying nuclei (NCB) a clear path forward towards the detection of the CvB. We show that gravitational focusing by the Sun causes the expected neutrino capture rate to modulate annually. The amplitude and phase of the modulation depend on the phase-space distribution of the local neutrino background, which is perturbed by structure formation. These results also apply to searches for sterile neutrinos at NCB experiments. Gravitational focusing is the only source of modulation for neutrino capture experiments, in contrast to dark-matter direct-detection searches where the Earth's time-dependent velocity relative to the Sun also plays a role.

Testing Lorentz Symmetry with the Double Chooz Experiment

The Double Chooz reactor-based oscillation experiment searches for an electron antineutrino disappearance signal to investigate the neutrino mass matrix mixing angle theta 13. Double Chooz's reported evidence for this disappearance is generally interpreted as mass-driven mixing through this parameter. However, the electron antineutrino candidates collected by the experiment can also be used to search for a signature of the violation of Lorentz invariance. We study the sidereal time dependence of the antineutrino signal rate and probe Lorentz violation within the Standard-Model Extension (SME) framework. We find that the data prefer the sidereal time independent solution, and a number of limits are applied to the relevant SME coefficients, including the first constraints on those associated with Lorentz violation in the e-tau mixing sector.

Simulations of Pion Production in the DAEδALUS Target

DAEδALUS, the Decay At-rest Experiment for δ_{CP} at a Laboratory for Underground Science will look for evidence of CP-violation in the neutrino sector, an ingredient in theories that seek to explain the matter/antimatter asymmetry in our universe. It will make a precision measurement of the oscillations of muon antineutrinos to electron antineutrinos using multiple neutrino sources created by low-cost compact cyclotrons. The experiment utilizes decay-at-rest neutrino beams produced by 800 MeV protons impinging a beam target of graphite and copper. Two well established Monte Carlo codes, MARS and GEANT4, have been used to optimise the design and the performance of the target. A study of the results obtained with these two codes is presented in this paper.

Target Studies for the Production of Lithium8 for Neutrino Physics Using a Low Energy Cyclotron

Lithium 8 is a short lived beta emitter producing a high energy anti-neutrino, which is very suitable for making several measurements of fundamental quantities. It is proposed to produce Lithium 8 with a commercially available 60 MeV cyclotron using protons or alpha particles on a Beryllium 9 target. We have used the GEANT4 program to model these processes, and calculate the anti-neutrino fluxes that could be obtained in a practical system. We also calculate the production of undesirable contaminants such as Boron 8, and show that these can be reduced to a very low level.

ArgoNeuT and the Neutrino-Argon Charged Current Quasi-Elastic Cross Section

ArgoNeuT, a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber in the NuMI beamline at Fermilab, has recently collected thousands of neutrino and anti-neutrino events between 0.1 and 10 GeV. The experiment will, among other things, measure the cross section of the neutrino and anti-neutrino Charged Current Quasi-Elastic interaction and analyze the vertex activity associated with such events. These topics are discussed along with ArgoNeuT's automated reconstruction software, currently capable of fully reconstructing the muon and finding the event vertex in neutrino interactions.

Atmospheric Tau Neutrinos in a Multi-kiloton Liquid Argon Detector

An ultra-large Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber-based neutrino detector will have the uncommon ability to detect atmospheric tau neutrino events. This paper discusses the most promising modes for identifying charged current tau neutrino interactions, and shows that, with simple kinematic cuts, ~30 tau neutrinos can be isolated in a 100 kt*yr exposure, with greater than 4 sigma significance. This sample is sufficient to perform flux-averaged total cross-section and cross-section shape parameterization measurements -- the first steps toward using tau neutrinos to search for physics beyond the Standard Model.

ArgoNeuT, a liquid argon time projection chamber in a low energy neutrino beam

ArgoNeuT (Argon Neutrino Test), a NSF/DOE project at Fermilab, is the first LArTPC to go in a low energy neutrino beam and just the second LArTPC to go in a neutrino beam ever. ArgoNeuT sits just upstream of the on-axis MINOS near detector in the NuMI beamline, about 1 km from the target station and 100 m underground. The detector features a 47X40X90 cm (169 L) active volume TPC with a fully contained recirculation and purification system. Among other physics, ArgoNeuT will measure the charged-current quasi-elastic (anti-) neutrino cross section on argon at an energy of ~3 GeV.
